No problem for me without pmount, it's strange that it doesn't work for you.
Also, we should wait the new pcmanfm before adding such depends.

Please see my previous mail about default applications.
But I didn't know there is a music player with mplayer backend. I tried it a
bit and it's pretty nice. It uses more RAM that aqualung but the CPU usage is
really low.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Default applications on Lubuntu 10.04 : Summarize of the UDS Session

2009-11-22 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi,

This a quick summarize of the session we had in UDS about the workflow for
choosing default applications, and with a current proposal.

Blueprint :
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/lubuntu-lucid-default-applications
Complete spec : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Specs/LubuntuLucidApplications

Current consensus was to stay with the list of applications we have for Karmic
(but please read until the end of this mail :))

The general proposal for the roadmap is the following :
- Determine areas not currently covered in Karmic seed that still need to be
addressed
- Discuss applications that could be replaced
- Organize a IRC meeting to stop the applications list

For problematic applications, we'll need discussions preferably with
advantages/disadvantages, benchmarks (memory and CPU usage , dependencies,
installed space ...). The goal is not to replace all the seed, but focus on
some keys applications that can be discuss, and which have solid arguments for
a replacement.

Again, this is a proposal, feel free to comment it. If there is no objection,
we could start discussion on the content of the list.

Regards,
Julien Lavergne

2009-11-22 Thread Leszek Lesner
The combination of gnome-mplayer as a multimedia player for everything and
xmms2 + lxmusic for music management would be the best combination for the
future.
If xmms2 and lxmusic won't become stable or good enough, we can always stick to
aqualung.
As we are creating an LXDE based Distribution we should stick to something
developed by the LXDE guys, because this will help them to improve there apps.
(more testers -> more bug reports -> better software). So lxmusic should be
definitely be in.

The only problem I could see with exaile is its dependency on gstreamer.
Since mplayer is the default movie player for lubuntu it makes sense to
utilize mplayer as the backend to handle music playing to avoid adding
unneeded libraries to the overall system.

Pmount makes sense but I tried gmusicbrowser and it is nether a
lightweight music player like lxmusic which I think should remain the
default nor a full music library like exaile which I think should be a
recommended option for those who want to mange a music library and not
just play the odd song.

The main issue I had with gmusicbrowser was that it seemed to take over
my CPU and it didn't seem as complete and user-friendly as exaile anyway.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] RAM and CPU Requierments

2009-11-22 Thread Julien Lavergne
We don't have for now the requierement needed for Lubuntu, because some
components are still in developpement.

However, I done some testing on Karmic + LXDE/Lubuntu packages updated from
Lucid + some adjustements, and a session start with 50-60 Mo, according to the
taskmanager. So in your case, the memory could be a bit short to be confortable.

For the processor, I can't test if it's useable. But It will be a good
candidate for testing Lubuntu Lucid, and I will be happy to have your feedback
on it.

You are right, that's why I said it's only OK for old PCs. And usually,
people won't use modern devices for such PCs. Indeed, 2.6 kernel
supports much more, but the quality of the code is falling since the
2.4->2.6 transition. I hope the upstream AND the kernel policy will
change. Since if they provide a bad base , and bad apps, no distro dev
can create a good release.

"Unfortunately some hardware will not run so well on the 2.4 kernel and
needs many of the features in the newer kernels. Sure the OS is light
but people (like myself) who don't have the slowest systems, still like
to leave maximum resources for actual applications to run rather than a
bloated desktop.
