[Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Manual?
Hi, We created a detailed manual of Ubuntu 11.04 [1] for Muktware.com. I personally use Lubuntu on my Dell mini as it is faster than Xubuntu. So, I will be very much interested in writing a similar manual for Lubuntu. Any pointers or suggestions? Who should I get in touch with to discuss what else we need for the manual? [Lubuntu-desktop] Can be lubuntu software center good thing?
i can say that on my 64 bit system lubuntu software center uses 50 MB RAM less than ubuntu software center (30 mb). the script will be less weight than 1 MB, it depends only on gtk and apt. anyway i think that lubuntu software center should be a kind of more user-friendly synaptic, and not a totally light-rewritten on ubuntu software center. Writing and mantaining own application of this importance can be tedious and risky task. Maybe we should first just assess what components of Ubuntu SW center make it slow and RAM consuming. If possible, second step could be to compile an Ubuntu SW center version which would have minimal dependencies, probably co-working with its contemporary authors. i think that sometimes rewrite is better than cleanup the code, and i dont' know if the authors of USC will be available. anyway, we are in democracy XD and this is the spirit of the open-source, i'm available to write python apps. Hi, thanks for the detailed reply. I'll remove the keyboard warning. We can only use the Ubuntu building for futur ISO, not old. We (Jonathan or me) can create a new 10.04, but it will need testing and maybe fixes. I'm not sure it's so necessary, because you can do the install with the current one, and do the updates as usual. I know it's long, but creating and testing a new ISO will also need time. I was thinking that possibly using something like remastersys http://www.geekconnection.org/remastersys/ubuntu.html may be possible for Jonathan to get a 'community' 10.04 update out pretty quickly rather than you both having to spend time checking and re-checking a new-build? I'm sure Jonathan will curse me every way, but I am sure he can spin one for Lubuntu 10.04 We can only use the Ubuntu building for futur ISO, not old. We (Jonathan or me) can create a new 10.04, but it will need testing and maybe fixes. I'm not sure it's so necessary, because you can do the install with the current one, and do the updates as usual. As lubuntu *can* be used with other file managers (some people do want to
alter things), I hope that the proposed change is okay.

Hi, sorry for the delay in answering, it does take a couple of days for me to get in touch with people and await for them to respond. My current thinking and proposal is that we do actually add a Lubuntu section to the main manual. This will cover parts that are specifically Lubuntu. It is, however, no minor task as we would be altering a lot of pages to include references to Lubuntu for specific tasks. I'd like a bit more time to chat with the Manual team and ask them what they suggest. Regards, Phill. I can create a TOC (table of content) based on the Ubuntu manual and share with the team. We have experience with manuals as we also created Linux Mint manual and Fedora 15 manual. So, we can create a TOC and focus on what is specific to Lubuntu (especially installing on variety of hardware and driver issues, if any). 3. We can also add section on light weight apps, which don't come pre-installed but can be useful for users for specific tasks. 4. We can also have a tips/tricks chapter to better utilize Lubuntu. 5. The entire manual will be created from scratch. Don't worry about man-hours we will have to invest in creating it. If we start early we can deliver the manual the day Lubuntu 11.10 is launched. Note: we can also create additional YouTube manual. However I don't see the value in creating yet another source. I'd be more excited to see people contributing to the already existing documentation on the Wiki [0], the help site [1] [2] and the semi-official manual [3]. Dispersing effort on multiple projects to achieve the same goal seems a bit counter-productive to me but I guess that's the great thing about Linux, everyone is free to do as they please. Kendall, I had a chance two download the new 64-bit* Peppermint Two *image today and I must say that it looks great! Seems to be using a little less battery that One or Ice did. I'm going to replace the 64-bit Lubuntu build you gave us with P2 on my Acer 3820 and keep 32-bit Lubuntu on my Acer 1810 until 11.10 is released. I think both distros are going to be a huge hit.
