[Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Manual?
Hi, We created a detailed manual of Ubuntu 11.04 [1] for Muktware.com. I personally use Lubuntu on my Dell mini as it is faster than Xubuntu. So, I will be very much interested in writing a similar manual for Lubuntu. Any pointers or suggestions? Who should I get in touch with to discuss what else we need for the manual? Most imp question of all: do we need a manual for Lubuntu? [1] http://www.muktware.com/man/1068 Best -- bSwapnil Bhartiya/bbr Editor: Muktware.combr Skype: No Way...its non-free. i can say that on my 64 bit system lubuntu software center uses 50 MB RAM less than ubuntu software center (30 mb). the script will be less weight than 1 MB, it depends only on gtk and apt. anyway i think that lubuntu software center should be a kind of more user-friendly synaptic, and not a totally light-rewritten on ubuntu software center. Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Can be lubuntu software center good thing?
Writing and mantaining own application of this importance can be tedious and risky task. Maybe we should first just assess what components of Ubuntu SW center make it slow and RAM consuming. If possible, second step could be to compile an Ubuntu SW center version which would have minimal dependencies, probably co-working with its contemporary authors. i think that sometimes rewrite is better than cleanup the code, and i dont' know if the authors of USC will be available. anyway, we are in democracy XD and this is the spirit of the open-source, i'm available to write python apps. P.S. i'm very sorry for my bad english, but i'm italian :-P On 28/07/2011 18:15, Filip Dominec wrote: Writing and mantaining own application of this importance can be tedious and risky task. Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Documentation for new Iso's
Hi, thanks for the detailed reply. I'll remove the keyboard warning. We can only use the Ubuntu building for futur ISO, not old. We (Jonathan or me) can create a new 10.04, but it will need testing and maybe fixes. I'm not sure it's so necessary, because you can do the install with the current one, and do the updates as usual. I know it's long, but creating and testing a new ISO will also need time. I was thinking that possibly using something like remastersys http://www.geekconnection.org/remastersys/ubuntu.html may be possible for Jonathan to get a 'community' 10.04 update out pretty quickly rather than you both having to spend time checking and re-checking a new-build? As I write this I received your update on the alternate daily. I'll watch out for it! Regards, Phill. Could you please check https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Testing for the warning about Ubiquity and key-board etc. The keyboard warning is not necessary anymore. I have left the alpha 1 there as it is available at 'CD' size iso as opposed to the usual too large daily images that we get during a build. I do think the page needs some further updating, so I ask if you could possibly find a little time to ensure it is fully up to date. Yes, but we will probably have some pages at http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/ Documentation will need update at this moment. There was a mention of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DerivativeTeam/Derivatives/Lubuntu that one of the guys noticed, as I was previously unaware of a 'derivatives' team, and it was well out of date I have put a divert on it to point to the current page. As I have previously said, having various pages all needing updating is madness. If their team has any complaints, please forward them to me. I did leave a comment as to why I had done it. I wasn't ware this Team was still active. I'm sure they will be ok with the divert, thanks. As we are now on 'official' build, where does this leave the earlier builds, the one that spring to mind is 10.04 - Is it easier to maintain these as not official builds using our 'old' system of building, or can the 10.04 be brought into the 'official' build system. 10.04 desperately needs re-making, there are something like 300 updates at 250Mb to download, if we are to truly to support it I would strongly suggest that as the generic ubuntu is up to 10.04.3, we do spin a new iso. I'm sure Jonathan will curse me every way, but I am sure he can spin one for Lubuntu 10.04 We can only use the Ubuntu building for futur ISO, not old. I know it's long, but creating and testing a new ISO will also need time. For 11.10, I note that 32bit and two 64bit variants are produced, but there is no mention of an 'alternate' install iso. Is this something that will be naturally added as Lubuntu slots into the 'official' build system, or is it something that must be done separately? I guess only 32 and 64 bits are available for daily build, and alternate and armel (?) are produced only for releases (Alpha, Beta etc ..) Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Manual?
Hi, sorry for the delay in answering, it does take a couple of days for me to get in touch with people and await for them to respond. My current thinking and proposal is that we do actually add a Lubuntu section to the main manual. This will cover parts that are specifically Lubuntu. It is, however, no minor task as we would be altering a lot of pages to include references to Lubuntu for specific tasks. I'd like a bit more time to chat with the Manual team and ask them what they suggest. Regards, Phill. I can create a TOC (table of content) based on the Ubuntu manual and share with the team. We have experience with manuals as we also created Linux Mint manual and Fedora 15 manual. So, we can create a TOC and focus on what is specific to Lubuntu (especially installing on variety of hardware and driver issues, if any). 3. We can also add section on light weight apps, which don't come pre-installed but can be useful for users for specific tasks. 4. We can also have a tips/tricks chapter to better utilize Lubuntu. 5. The entire manual will be created from scratch. Don't worry about man-hours we will have to invest in creating it. If we start early we can deliver the manual the day Lubuntu 11.10 is launched. Kendall, I had a chance two download the new 64-bit* Peppermint Two *image today and I must say that it looks great! Seems to be using a little less battery that One or Ice did. I'm going to replace the 64-bit Lubuntu build you gave us with P2 on my Acer 3820 and keep 32-bit Lubuntu on my Acer 1810 until 11.10 is released. I think both distros are going to be a huge hit. The only things that are beyond my capacity to test are the usb-creator.exe and wubi.exe applications as I don't have a Windows system anywhere and I'm unfamiliar with what (if any) changes need to be made there. Currently the .exe files that are on the .iso are the same ones used in the amd64 Xubuntu build. I need to find a way to get this distributed amongst the Lubuntu testers and developers. I can stick this up on the Peppermint server probably tomorrow sometime or I can throw it in my Dropbox and share it with a couple of people (gotta be careful not to max out my available bandwidth though). When I figure out how to get this to you guys, it's my hope that you'll take it and make it available to everyone who's been wanting a 64 bit Lubuntu for all this time.
