[Lubuntu-desktop] [Bug 889414] [NEW] Run dialog opens up in the background

2012-01-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug by Michael Basse (michael-alpha-unix):

Whenever i hit Ctrl+F2, the tun dialog opens up in the background of the
current running application (and is not focused). Either i have to
minimize the current application or click on the taskbar to hightlight
the run dialog to make it usable. It is really annoying, the run dialog
should take precedence over the other open applications. Please look
into this. I tried this in virtualbox and separate 11.10 lubuntu clean
installation.

Bug description:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lubuntu-default-
settings/+bug/912499 is bringing a shortcut to lock the screen. Tha
  shortcut is calling xscreensaver.

But there is no dependency to xscreensaver in that package. I removed
xscreensaver by hand some time ago. The latest upgrade of lubuntu-
default-settings should have installed xscreensaver again.

[Lubuntu-desktop] precise artwork

2012-01-27 Thread 神癒礁湖
Hi, people:

I have updated the artwork (again). I REALLY recommend you to replace
your Ozone3 theme with this one (a lot of improvements solve several
bugs). Also, the wallpaper is ready (after a selection process). Again
no option for colour (sorry) for us and Xubuntu devs (also Kubuntu are
slaved to its plasmoid style) due to Canonical restrictions.

If you feel better, the new artwork package will include all previous
Lubuntu themes and some walls by the Flickr community. Check out:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Artwork/Incoming/Precise/Ozone

As always, feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Rafael,

So, we install the new one and then choose a theme we like? (Shhs, don't
tell anyone - horror forbid we have a choice :P ) As ever Rafael, thanks
for the hard work you and your small team put in. It is such an important
element of the system.

@ Julien - How soon to the staging PPA?

thanks,

Phill.

lubuntu-default-settings (0.23) precise; urgency=low

  * usr/share/lubuntu/openbox/menu.xml  rc.xml
   - Re-synchronize with upstream.
   - Workaround loose of focus of lxpanel run window (LP: #889414)
   - Add a rule to maximize all new windows with type normal.
   - Place new windows on the monitor with the mouse, rather than the primary
 monitor.
   - Use scrot -u -b (focused window with border) for the screenshot of the
 current window.
   - Add a shortcut for the power button.
   - Use horizontal presentation of the alt-tab.
   - Add a shortcut to lock the screen (LP: #912499)
  * usr/bin/startlubuntu*  usr/share/lubuntu/xscreensaver/xscreensaver:
   - Add a custom configuration file for xscreensaver, with blank mode by
 default (LP: #578789).
   - Don't append /etc/xdg in xdg path, already done by Xsession.d
   - Start gnome-keyring support for ssh before the session. Thanks urusha for
 the patch (LP: #664206).

SSH_AUTH_SOCK is not being properly set. (Or it is pointing to a sock
  that doesn't accomplish its job.)

  Expected behavior:
You run ssh myn...@mydomain.net and the password manager opens a GUI to ask
for the passphrase. Once unlocked, it remains unlocked until you log off.
Moreover, at that moment of unlocking you can tell it to remember the
passphrase forever so it gets automatically unlocked next time you login. Any
other application that uses ssh-like connections will find this key unlocked as
well.

  Observed behavior:
You run ssh myn...@mydomain.net and it prompts you for the key passphrase
in the terminal. You run it again, you are prompted again. Any other
application that uses ssh-like connections will result in a passphrase prompt
as well.

  How to reproduce:
  Enter Lubuntu session
  Open Passwords and Encryption Keys
  Create a Secure Shell key
Configure this key to some domain you can ssh to
Open a terminal and run ssh myn...@mydomain.net
You are promted for a password in the terminal interface.

  Partial workaround:
Here is a partial workaround for a terminal session: export

I believe it's not Lxpanel, but the openbox configuration. On a default
lubuntu install, openbox is catching the Super key, and calling
lxpanelctl menu.

You can comment-out the Super_L and Super_R keybindings in
~/.config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml. You'll have to reload or restart
openbox.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Marketing Team?

2012-01-18 Thread amjjawad HOOHAA
Hello Phill :)

I thought so but was in need to check :)
Oh right, it means I'm involved too as long as I'm a member of The
Communication Team :P GREAT!

Since we are talking about Marketing, I have a request or a question to
ask:
Is it possible to have T-Shirt with Lubuntu Printed on? Mugs? stuff like
that? anything I could use over here to convert people to Linux and
Lubuntu? that would be a great tool if you ask me.
I don't mind to wear that T-Shirt and walk daily and if no one will even
bother to ask, I'll talk about it :)

I have already started to talk about Linux and Lubuntu since a long time
but these days, I'm very serious to convert more people and talk more about
it.

I made this: https://www.facebook.com/WOWLubuntu but that's nothing and
won't be enough so I'm looking for person to person contact or whatever
they call it :)

I wonder if Canonical could do this? even if it's Ubuntu T-Shirts that will
do the job, I assume.

Thanks!

P.S.
I wish I could do these T-Shirts myself but that is way too much for
someone like me :P

[Lubuntu-desktop] Qt Applications in lubuntu

2012-01-17 Thread Marcus Moeller

Hi all.

In general I make use of qtconfig-qt4 and set the appearance to 'GTK+'
in order to make Qt Applications look like the rest.

In lubuntu, this only works part-wise. The colour and theme style does
not seem to be applied. Also the fonts of Qt applications look much
fuzzier than the ones in GTK apps.

Any idea why is that?

[Lubuntu-desktop] LxPanel's Menu conflics with keyboard shortcuts....

2012-01-17 Thread Axel FILMORE

Hi there,

I've found something weird with LxPanel's Main Menu.

When the menu is added to the panel, hitting the super key just shows
the main menu, but other Super key shortcuts doesn't work.

When the menu is not added to the panel, Super+D minimises or maximises
windows, Super+E runs PCManFm, which is very handy for people comming
from other OS's if you see what I mean. :-D

I don't know really how the Super key is handled in the Main Menu, if
it's hard coded or not, but that's an issue IMHO.

Another interesting Super key is Super+F1, Super+F2, this switches to

i cant click anything in my lxpanel. alt-tab is working without
  problems to switch windows.

It seems like the entries in the crashed lxpanel dont have the correct
  position.

e.g. i have 3 opened windows. When i close the window (1st entry in
lxpanel) , lxpanel is still showing the 3 opened windows. when i click
on the first entry (the window which was closed) the 2. window opens,
so maybe lxpanel is just not redrawing but still opening entries by a
  click.

I dont know how to reproduce the crash of lxpanel, also i cant find
  usefull infos in /var/log/syslog

Would be great if someone has a hint about better debug-options.

At the moment i am calling lxpanel --profile Lubuntu. i hope this
will get better debug-infos when it is crashing again.

This is not necessarily true. Almost always, we add dependencies because
the program needs them at runtime.
Most of time, these deps, especially the libraries, will be loaded at
 runtime as well.
The most important issue is how much RAM is needed by programs constantly
running throughout the whole desktop session.

What do you think about specially the bold statement:

It would be nice if the Lubuntu software centre let the user know
which packages were also going to be installed, and also if
somehow *it could tell the user if the package isn't really
 designed to go with Lubuntu*.

It would be nice if LSC would maybe list how much disk space would be
left after the install. Maybe that would help a bit. However, is there a
reason why non-Lubuntu-approved apps are are in the LUBUNTU Software
Center? Somehow that doesn't make sense to me.

I believe that all the softwares avaiable to Ubuntu needs to be avaiable to

answer to the question will this work with my resource-limited machine?

*However, is there a reason why non-Lubuntu-approved apps are are in
the LUBUNTU Software Center? Somehow that doesn't make sense to me.*

I believe that all the softwares avaiable to Ubuntu needs to be avaiable
to Lubuntu. The user needs to have the freedom to decide what he will
 install.

But then we have another Synaptic? What's the point to that? Maybe I
misunderstood the value of LSC but I thought of it as the catalog of
Lubuntu-friendly apps. When you want to answer the question of what's the
lightweight package for [blank]? that's where you go. If you don't care if
it's lightweight or you don't get what you want in LSC, then you try
 Synaptic/apt/aptitude. Doesn't that make sense?

Who would decide what app is right for Lubuntu? That's completely relative
to your specs machine.
On my old laptop (a 11 years old pentium 3) i've never found an app that
doesn't run well under Lubuntu... except of course apps REALLY HEAVY, but
that ones run just the same on any system. What I like very much about
Lubuntu is that it runs everything i throw at it, without complains :)

[Lubuntu-desktop] LSC and Dependencies Talk

2012-01-15 Thread amjjawad HOOHAA
Hi everyone,

Before I reply to this post:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11613963postcount=252
I thought it's better to start such a discussion over here so that I
understand better and we make it clear to everyone what is really going on.

As far as I have learned so far and I could be wrong, the Dependencies Talk
on a Low Resources System where usually Lubuntu is installed, is more about
Space Issue than Loaded Files on RAM issue.
I don't have a document or something that confirm that but I do know for
sure that as long as nothing will be loaded in RAM, the performance won't
be affected.

I've come across MANY questions from users like: This app has lots of
dependencies, can I install it on Lubuntu? will that slow my system down??

For me, I can easily reply that post saying: It's more about space issues
than memory consuming issue + if you want, you can use the terminal for
Synaptic.

@Stefano
What do you think about specially the bold statement:

It would be nice if the Lubuntu software centre let the user know which
packages were also going to be installed, and also if somehow *it could
tell the user if the package isn't really designed to go with Lubuntu*.

@Wiki and Doc Team
I think we need to highlight this issue because many are wondering and
asking the same Q over and over again.

Thank you!

P.S.
If this email is not clear, please let me know :)
Best Regards,

[Lubuntu-desktop] Roadmap for 12.04

2012-01-14 Thread Rob Peters
I just started testing 12.04 and my initial impression is that it's
wonderful! What to my surprise, there is now a shortcut option for the
desktop!

I do want to ask [again] one additional thing. The 11.04 theme has been
noted in various posts as being a winner, brilliant, stuning etc. I do
hope this theme will be available as an option on 12.04 and updated to
GTK-3.

The more I see of Lubuntu the more I like it. There are a couple of things
that might make things easier for prospective adopters.

1. Gnome 2 and xubuntu allow a user to create a launcher anywhere on the
desktop without having to build a .desktop file. Gnome 3 dropped this
feature and its a pain. Now, if your going to attract windows users most
everyone's desktop I see is littered with folders and icons.
So, my desire would be to adopt the xubuntu solution that allows for a
right-click on the desk to open a launcher constructor.

2. Searching for files and file content is a big issue for lots of windows
users. I needed to install the gnome-search-tool to do this. An easier
solution?

I know that themes are a very subjective area. For me personally, I
thought the 11.04 default theme was a big winner. The blue panel with
white text was sharp (IMO) along with the box headers. I am not so
impressed with the standards 11.10 theme. So, when you change the theme
form one release to the other can you include the prior theme for people
who don't like the new one.

Well, I'm working on it. At the first time I was adapting an already
made theme, but now the theme has been totally reworked from scratch.
The intention is being really clear and sharp, with the contrast and
simplicity in mind. You can check it out (not downloads yet) here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Artwork/Incoming/Precise/Ozone

The GTK2 part is almost complete (two controls remining). The GTK3 is
half-done.

[Lubuntu-desktop] WOW Lubuntu!

2012-01-14 Thread amjjawad HOOHAA
Hello Everyone,

amjjawad is back to action yet again :)
I'd like to start my activities with the new Lubuntu Sub Teams by creating
a new project called WOW Lubuntu. This project has one main target and
aim: reach to as many users as possible.
I for one think that every user who has come across Lubuntu needs to return
the favor to such great system and to do that, he/she can simply JUST TALK
about Lubuntu and SHARE his/her experience/story with someone else.

I believe this is the right time for such move and I think the more we talk
and do for Lubuntu, the more support we shall get.
Lubuntu really deserves that, thus this simple and humble project is a
little pay-back for the great and amazing system (Lubuntu).

[Lubuntu-desktop] comms and Lubuntu Support Team.

2012-01-13 Thread Phill Whiteside
Hi gang!

*Comms: *
They have an immediate focus on things like getting the blog up and running
(my task). Jens has asked that he may interview someone from each team so
as to better advertise who we are and our structure. I know that you will
take the time out for that. The human face of the people who 'are' lubuntu.
There may be times when Jens needs to be able to confirm / deny a story
that leaks out quickly so as to enforce that the
https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-comms is THE place to get 'correct'
information as opposed to rumours. I ask, therefore, that the devs would
join that area so that any news from them does not languish in the
moderation queue. There is no need to join the ML unless you want to. For
every other member of lubuntu who is an advocate, please do join let
comms know what you are doing.

*Lubuntu Support Team: *

Ali is more than happy to take the role of co-ordinator of LST (not be
confused with LTS). The basis of this is going to be:

The new lubuntu-supp...@lists.ubuntu.com list can be only for
support-related discussion, stuff like: I think *this* issue is a FAQ, has
anyone else been asked something like this?, or Help, I don't know the
answer to *that*, but I think it matters, any ideas on a solution or
workaround anyone?.

Regarding having a visible tracking list of
currently important/unanswered/might be a FAQ kinds of support issues, I'd
suggest a wiki page would be a logical medium for the team to use to
maintain such a list.

(Thanks JM for that insight)

*Bug reporting and LST: *

Whilst not wishing to discourage people from logging bug reports, most of
my mail from the bug-team is actually This is a duplicate of bug xx.
I'd like to mention that an apport raised bug is easily checked to see if
the bug is already there. I know that n00bs do not know how to check. For
the rest of us, if there is doubt if it is a bug, or a feature that is not
there (Wish List), or a possible mis-configuration of customising their
system - would they please ask before logging a bug via launchpad, this
also applies to what do I log it against. I'll link the bug reporting
system wiki page to the LST wiki page

Well, as they say at marriages... for all those who disagree with this
creation of the two new groups ground rules, speak now or else wait until
they have all being running a while and we can fine tune them.

So, that is v0.99 for each of those two teams.

And just to prove it is not all bad news, The
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation has had its first
tidy up, there is still work to be done to get the 'old' areas off it and
onto their own areas. We are making progress! The full tidying up of our
wiki areas will take some time and I'd like to thank Chris for not
resigning as soon as he saw the task!

Regards,

Phill.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Fwd: Derivatives using the LightDM GTK+ greeter

Hi all,

I just wanted to clarify some points regarding LightDM and the GTK+
greeter (lightdm-gtk-greeter package):
- This greeter was always intended as an example greeter
- It's being used as the default installed greeter for some derivatives
- The GTK+ greeter is now an independent project from LightDM
(http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/lightdm/2011-November/000190.html)

I do not spend much time on this greeter other than confirming it still
works with newer versions of the daemon, and have no plans to add new
functionality. If derivatives want to use this greeter they are welcome
to, but I suggest they will need to take maintainership of the project.
Now it is a separate launchpad project
(https://launchpad.net/lightdm-gtk-greeter) it is easy to give people
permissions to this project.

Anyone interested?

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Fwd: Derivatives using the LightDM GTK+ greeter

2012-01-12 Thread PCMan
Actually I have one gtk2 based lightdm greeter which is more themable than
the one provided by lightdm-gtk-greeter. I have an updated version in my
harddisk, but it's not yet fully ported to the latest lightdm APIs. Maybe I
can take some time to finish it.
Anyone interested?

 Hi all,

I just wanted to clarify some points regarding LightDM and the GTK+
 greeter (lightdm-gtk-greeter package):
 - This greeter was always intended as an example greeter
 - It's being used as the default installed greeter for some derivatives
 - The GTK+ greeter is now an independent project from LightDM
 (http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/lightdm/2011-November/000190.html)

I do not spend much time on this greeter other than confirming it still
works with newer versions of the daemon, and have no plans to add new
functionality. If derivatives want to use this greeter they are welcome
to, but I suggest they will need to take maintainership of the project.
Now it is a separate launchpad project
(https://launchpad.net/lightdm-gtk-greeter) it is easy to give people
 permissions to this project.

 Anyone interested?

2012-01-12 Thread 神癒礁湖
It could be nice if Lubuntu uses its own greeter, like KDM does,
focusing on Lubuntu-ish themeing and speed. If you're going to plan to
port it to GTK3 it should be nice testing this one.

2012-01-11 Thread Charlie Kravetz
Erick - myself and others can reproduce this issue every image since I
reported it. It happens with the desktop cd for precise Ubuntu, Xubuntu,
Lubuntu in both VirtualBox and on hardware. I don't know why you can not
reproduce it. However, it is still happening with the images dated
2012-01-11.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Some little tweaks by default

2012-01-11 Thread Jean-Pierre Vidal Piesset

Hi all :)

I would like to propose some little configurations to come by default in
lubuntu:

Audacious: activate Desktop Notifications (for 3.0 and above) and
Global Hotkey for multimedia keys!

Chromium: make the gtk theme the default theme instead of that ugly blue
that does not fit with lubuntu

I think it would improve the user experience and would make lubuntu more
user-friendly evecandy :)

Hi Josh,
i dont think its a good idea to provide a package which does not get

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Fw: Dropping i386 non-PAE as a supported kernel flavour in Precise Pangolin

2012-01-10 Thread Josh Embrey
It was just an idea, given the fact that the lubuntu dev team has no real
dedicated kernel dev that can tackle the project.

Speaking from experience, as an avid linux user, I'll generally get the
latest project that'll work for whatever I need to get done or I'll find
another project. As I'm not always happy to switch distros, I'll actually
go back and use one that functions and just control the upgrades manually.

Regarding security, it seems that the change will only effect a small
number of older laptops (I've tested the new kernel builds on two that are
about 5-10 years in age and found both still worked), it reduces the
likelihood of those kernels being exploited except by random chance.
Again, from my experience, linux kernels that get compromised are often
directly targeted and not broad-spectrum attacks.

Just my two cents, though.

Also, the non-pae kernel is still supported in Precise. All we'd have

I decided to give a shot to Lubuntu 12.04 on my testing laptop, Thinkpad
T42 with 1.7GHz Pentium M, no dice. So I take my earlier reply back as
this machine is from ~2003 or something and not even from the 90's.

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Intel_Pentium_M_(Dothan)

From that list it is easy to see models from Thinkpad lines, and those
are really used around the globe.

That technically rises the ammount of users affected.

But now I'm out to enjoy -14C winter weather with a hint of Sun shining,
happy new year from me too ;)

Bug description:

SSH_AUTH_SOCK=`echo /tmp/keyring*/ssh` after the keyring-daemon has been loaded.
But it only works within the same terminal session, not for other
applications that launch ssh-like processes.
Disclaim: it works for Lubuntu session inside a Ubuntu 10.04 install, with
GDM as session manager.

  $ printenv SSH_AUTH_SOCK
  /tmp/ssh-PZgdl10603/agent.10603

You run ssh myn...@mydomain.net and it prompts you for the key passphrase
in the terminal. You run it again, you are prompted again. Any other
application that uses ssh-like connections will result in a passphrase prompt
as well.

  How to reproduce:
  Enter Lubuntu session
  Open Passwords and Encryption Keys
  Create a Secure Shell key
Configure this key to some domain you can ssh to
Open a terminal and run ssh myn...@mydomain.net
You are promted for a password in the terminal interface.

  Partial workaround:
Here is a partial workaround for a terminal session: export
SSH_AUTH_SOCK=`echo /tmp/keyring*/ssh` after the keyring-daemon has been loaded.
But it only works within the same terminal session, not for other
applications that launch ssh-like processes.
Disclaim: it works for Lubuntu session inside a Ubuntu 10.04 install, with
GDM as session manager.

  $ printenv SSH_AUTH_SOCK
  /tmp/ssh-PZgdl10603/agent.10603
  $ ssh mydomain
Enter passphrase for key '/home/leorolla/.ssh/id_rsa': [pressed ^C]
  $ export SSH_AUTH_SOCK=`echo /tmp/keyring*/ssh`
  $ printenv SSH_AUTH_SOCK
  /tmp/keyring-k3BQQd/ssh
  $ ssh mydomain
Last login: Wed Oct 20 19:58:06 2010 from
  Your default printer is
  mydomain:leorolla [blinking cursor!]

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Fw: Dropping i386 non-PAE as a supported kernel flavour in Precise Pangolin

2012-01-06 Thread Marvin Reimer
Hi (my first post to a Lubuntu Maillinglist),

I also had one minor problem with the PAE kernel.
I'm running Lubuntu mainly in VMs (because it is faster than the heavier
Ubuntu).
When installing Lubuntu Precise in Virtualbox I had to turn on PAE support
in the options (this was not a dealbreaker).

But, when installing Virtualbox Guest Additions in Lubuntu Precise, the
headers of the PAE kernel where missing so that the Guest Additions could
not be installed.

I recommend to include the PAE kernel headers in the base install so that
some non advanced users can also install the Guest Additions easily.

Wow, I stand corrected. I have a VERY similar CPU here in my Dell
laptop that is around the same vintage that is PAE supported. This
does suggest the problem is more widespread than originally thought as
this is pretty much the target market for Lubuntu, older laptops.

Hi,

I went through the whole thread (37 emails so far) and noticed very simple
thing that I already have noticed long time ago (I know what most of you
will say) which is: we do *NOT *have accurate database of Lubuntu Users in
general and those who are still using OLD machines and I mean VERY old
here.

I like such kind of discussion and I tend to agree with some opinions and
disagree with others but after all, this is very healthy activity
(discussion) but ... as always ... the real question is: isn't it pointless
to discuss such thing without REAL figures? some guys already pointed that
out, I guess.

Long story short, my simple and humble opinion is: we need a group of
people who do a survey to obtain such figures. No, I have no smart ideas of
HOWTO do that but if we could discuss about this, that would be VERY
helpful. Perhaps we are wasting our time here and there are only 2-3 users
with such old machines? for me, Lubuntu 10.04 didn't work on this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1590614 while Mint LXDE 9 did.
Both may be using the same kernel but I'm not really sure why Lubuntu
didn't work. Also, perhaps they are many users that will be affected with
that drop? so we need some figures.

Just a thought I'd like to share with all, as usual :)

Thanks!

Yeah it's been put forward as an idea before but again, without an
accurate way to get the information the straw poll we're conducting
here is just as valid as an online survey because this is essentially
an online survey.

[Lubuntu-desktop] [Bug 911905] Re: hitting enter on install screen 1 forces language to top selection

2012-01-06 Thread Charlie Kravetz
Setting to high importance, since once the new language takes effect,
the center button (back in English) takes me to a desktop in that
language. Not being able to read the language, it makes it difficult to
back up and change back to English. This can have detrimental effects
for those not expecting a desktop in a language they can not read.

** Changed in: ubiquity (Ubuntu)

The problem with a survey is that it will never be representative, since it
is opt-in, and even more unrepresentative based off of where it's
publicized (i.e. a poll of lubuntu-desktop subscribers won't get you all of
the non-pae cpu users). The only fool-proof way of getting this data is to
automatically submit it from users' computers, but that's a privacy issue,
and still limits to internet users and those who do package upgrades
regularly (assuming the submission method results from a package upgrade).

I can offer you this though [1]:
21:35:54 kees so, as for data, with bdmurray's help, I downloaded 7271
x86 cpuinfos from bug reports on LP about a year ago. 336 of those were
non-pae.
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~cpu-checker-dev/cpu-checker/trunk/files/head:/test/
21:36:12 kees so that's just under 5%

I think it's also not how many people are using non-pae cpus, but whether
or not Lubuntu is expected to be able to run on non-pae cpus. For example,
I would expect Lubuntu to run on the 400MHz FSB Pentium M CPUs [2] (only
the 400MHz FSB models don't support PAE [3]); in fact, I'd even argue that
those CPUs are part of the intended audience. And no matter how many users
there are, based off of a QA perspective, if I say that Lubuntu is designed
for a particular kind of machine, it better be able to run on that machine,
plain and simple.

Also, the non-pae kernel is still supported in Precise. All we'd have to do
is change the default kernel on i386.

[Lubuntu-desktop] [Bug 911905] Re: hitting enter on install screen 1 forces language to top selection

2012-01-06 Thread Erick Brunzell
Maybe I need a better explanation of how to reproduce this behavior.
Just now I've tried both the Ubuntu and Lubuntu i386 20120116 images,
both choosing try me first and install, and I couldn't reproduce
this. I've not tried Xubuntu.

The only glitch I've encountered is that the Precise CD/DVD wants to
add itself to my base Oneiric systems sources if I choose boot first
hard drive from the live boot menu, but that's only been with todays
image.

To reproduce this issue,
1. insert a cd in the drive
2. when the cd starts, select the default language.
3. Make sure you are at the cd menu, not the later selection screen that has
only two choices. This has the F-keys across the bottom and at least 4 items in
the menu
4. Select the second item in the menu, Install ???
5. At the next screen, hit Enter on the keyboard.

[Lubuntu-desktop] [Bug 911905] Re: hitting enter on install screen 1 forces language to top selection

2012-01-06 Thread Erick Brunzell
I swear I just did exactly that with Lubuntu i386-20120106, it's
installing as I type this.

I booted the Live CD (actually DVD due to size) and the first screen I
was presented with was the language selection screen. I left it on the
default English and selected Install. From there things went pretty
much as expected, but some screens were drawn twice or out of place.

I don't think any of this is ubiquity or casper related but rather
something to do with other elements being added to the live image in a
haphazard way as is typical during heavy development.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Fw: Dropping i386 non-PAE as a supported kernel flavour in Precise Pangolin

2012-01-05 Thread Steven
Hi, I'm running Lubuntu on a non-PAE kernel too :)

1.4GHz Pentium M in a Dell Latitude D505 with 512MB RAM from 2004. It's my
main production machine and runs Lubuntu like a charm.

I've been reading through the emails and irc logs, and it sounds like the
kernel team is maintaining the non-pae kernel in Precise (but not beyond),
but just not setting it as the default -- any chance someone can convince
them to make the non-pae kernel the default in just Lubuntu? Colin Watson
mentioned this as a possibility in the Technical Board meeting [1].

From what I understand, PAE has a different set of paging structures
compared to non-PAE. Does the kernel know to fall back onto non-PAE
mode if it cannot enable PAE on a CPU?

Which way to do things is basically a compile time option for the
kernel, as I understand it. So, if a PAE kernel is used, it can *only*
be run on processors that support the additional PAE instructions. Even
if a machine only has 128MB RAM, it you try to run a PAE kernel on it,
and the CPU lacks the PAE instruction, it is not going to run.

The real question is: are there really any CPUs in general purpose
desktops or laptops, in any significant quantity at all, that Ubuntu
11.10 i386 kernels work on, which PAE kernels do not work on?

Other than the early 400MHz Pentium-M, which are pretty rare, I don't
think anyone has seen such a CPU yet. Via C3 and AMD Geode LX already
cannot run current Ubuntu 11.10 default kernels anyway.

Having trawled the net for info on this, I have no problem with dropping
the non-PAE kernel as it appears to only effect a very, very, very small
number of users. Whether these are current or potential users is going to
be very hard to find out, unless they start jumping up-and-down screaming.
My one concern was the alleged overhead of the PAE kernel but, this
appears, from the various benchmarks I've seen, to be trivial and probably
unnoticeable in normal use. I have installed PAE kernels on a couple of
machines, one oneiric and one precise, and have not noticed any problems so
 far.
I would imagine by the time 12.04 is no longer supported, 32 bit ubuntus
may well be limited to the ARM anyway.
