[lubuntu-users] C4C Lubuntu 16.04 ReSpin Released

2016-06-01 Thread Eric Bradshaw

All,

The C4C Lubuntu 16.04 ReSpin, a Christian operating system based on
Lubuntu, has been released. It includes an array of Christian software
and media, as well as useful secular packages. The C4C Lubuntu ReSpin
removes five major default packages from Lubuntu, but adds twenty two.
The 64-bit and 32-bit ISOs are freely available from 5 different
locations [listed here
http://computers4christians.org/FAQ/Install/Install.html] and are easily
installed via DVD or USB. Run live to try out the OS, "rescue" files
from a computer that no longer works properly and/or wipe all the files
on a particular Hard Disk Drive. Instructions for all of the above are
available right on the live desktop. Please enjoy.

It might help to debug if you remove the "quiet splash" kernel parameters

As time goes on, new functionality goes into the kernel, and support
for older machines is kept (again, we don't want to abandon those
machines), so the kernel keeps getting bigger. I would not want the
kernel developers to remove support for older hardware, so removing
older stuff to make room for the new is not (to me) a good idea.

They already have removed support for older computers, for example
computers requiring cmov support in the kernel and also the entire issue
of pae/non pae.

That is
Also, in the repository, as more useful things become available, those
new things become used, and eventually become essential. So again,
the essential repository components' space on the install CD gradually
grows.

So far, even my oldest machines have been able to boot from USB (using
Plop), including using the older USB 1.0 ports, which are slow, but
not impossibly slow). My problems with booting from USB have been
problems with the USB Creator software.

By the way, you can get USB 2.0 PCI cards (for a desktop), providing
faster USB, and they are (were?) inexpensive. Of course, that doesn't
help for a laptop.

Since I need to get the wireless working first on my machines before
installing, I prefer to use the live desktop version (rather than the
alternate install), so I would probably not use a CD-size alternate
install version anyway.

This is, of course, my opinion on the subject.

It is possible to boot a USB from some computers via GRUB.
Some older computers do not even initialize the USB ports until much
later (after the initial BIOS)

So the only option is a CD image.

In those situations users will be require to use the mini iso.
This is problematic, as a Live ISO is a good way to test hardware

Hey Jack,
if you are booting to a black screen then it is your graphics card (most
likely).
This is a problem that will require you to research some things but
should likely be able to overcome.
That said, it might be better to wait for a while before trying this
distro...
Often in the weeks before the Alpha is released there are some rather
grievous issues on certain hardware (especially those requiring external
graphics modules)

Haven't been exactly following the thread, but have you been able to boot a
"live" DVD or USB of whatever system that are then trying to install? Or,
you are just "installing"?? Usually I test out the system . . . and if you
can get to a GUI before installing it, that might be indicative of
installer issues??? And, then test around for what distro/flavor
boots/runs in "live" . . . or figure out what boot params you might need .
. . then, try an install of what runs in "live" . . . is my general advice
. . . . Rather that than re-writing all kinds of files while trying to get
it installed . . . keeping it simple on the install is "better" . . . .

On both of my PPC 16.04 installs, Lu on a G4 iBook, and MATE on a G4 PM . .

and then, very slowly the log in window appears in GUI . . . . Other

So, possibly that might be what might be happening ??? If you just let it

Re: [lubuntu-users] ring any bells?

2016-06-01 Thread Simon Quigley
Hi Jack,

When you boot up, hold your Shift key down to get your GRUB menu.

Select: Advanced Options for Ubuntu
Select: Ubuntu, with Linux VERSION (recovery mode)

When you boot up:
Select: root

It should bring you to a root console.

DISCLAIMER: Be *very* careful as this doesn't have the usual restrictions and
you could *permanently* damage your system if you don't follow my instructions.

Next, type the following to remount / as a readable and writable partition:

mount -o remount,rw /

Then, if you had /home or anything else on separate partitions, run:

mount --all

Then, after that, run the following to ensure Lubuntu is installed:

apt update && apt install lubuntu-desktop

I haven't done this in a while, so I don't know if it has networking right
away, but to get networking, run:

ifup --all

If it prompts you to install some packages, great. That's your issue. You
reboot and it should be all fine from there. If not, follow up and let us know.

Good luck!

Lubuntu solved the problem by using Zram, and worked more reliably with

It's getting so that only Lubuntu will run well in my machines with only

It's getting where even Xubuntu won't run in my slower machines, so I'm

But I would think it would have the same difficulty getting the wireless
to work (such as in the case you need to install the b43 packages), as
the install without entering the live system, or the alternate install.

If, on the other hand, you initiate it from an already-running system
with working wireless, it might be something good to try.

On second thought, if it insists on using the "server for the U.S." (in
my case), with the slow speeds resulting from that, it would probably
not be a good thing to try. Using that server, the network transfer
speeds hover around 100 kilobytes per second (usually under that),
rather than the 950 kilobytes per second I get with a local server.

I get better speeds if I run the live system, and then (after getting
the wireless working) change the "Software and Updates" configuration to
use a local mirror server. Also, if I do an upgrade (rather than
install new), I avoid the slow speeds resulting from using the default
("server for the U.S.") mirror server.

If you're maintaining support for older hardware (like my Shuttle), it's
worth pointing out that the Alternate install will work with 512MB ram while
the Live Desktop won't.

Some years ago I found a procedure for installing Debian which started with 2
floppy discs and downloaded everything else. I could live with that if the
procedure was suitably automated like the old Mandrake software selection menu.
My understanding of the inner workings of Linux is very limited.

For my Shuttle, I did consider the possibility of making a custom version of
the Alternate install CD, but it looked like a lot of work to solve a one-off
problem. At the time, I was unaware of Plop which I should check out as a
possible solution for future problems.

If by net install you mean PXE, I don't yet understand the technique. It seems
that there are several preparatory steps. A clear step by step guide would be
appreciated. First question - if the hardware doesn't offer the option, is it
still possible?

Hi James,

Netboot can mean PXE.

It can also mean the Ubuntu mini.iso, which is a small iso file (~ 40
MB). This iso file installs a basic system, which is then downloading
the other program packages via the internet. You can do almost the same
thing with the Ubuntu Server iso file, which is also within CD size.

You select which meta-package(s) to install, and you can get Lubuntu
that way. It is not as straight-forward as with the Lubuntu alternate
iso file, and you need a wired internet connection, but it works.

My mistake. It has probably been a few years since my last experience but I
recall the failure of the install procedure on the Live Desktop several times
until I realised that it required a minimum of around 800MB of ram. The
Alternate CD did the job. I didn't know that the limitation had been remedied.
It's also possible that I'm remembering Ubuntu rather than Lubuntu.

When it comes to old systems, as time goes by, I have fewer and fewer older
systems to deal with that demand an O.S. image that fits on a CD. Being
able to boot from CD is helpful but I have an external USB DVD writer that
I currently use to install Lubuntu on a Samsung NC10 NetBook that doesn't
even have a CD drive.

Being able to use an old system is still important to me. So the "386" isoe
are vital for the Samsung NC10 and 2 friend's laptops that have Pentium M
processors in them.

Ian

If you're maintaining support for older hardware (like my Shuttle), it's worth
pointing out that the Alternate install will work with 512MB ram while the Live
Desktop won't.

The live system install has worked for me on my older machines having
512 megabytes of RAM, including on Lubuntu 16.04.

It hasn't yet failed on a live system install with 512 megabytes of RAM.

There was a problem with level 12.04, where it was necessary to remove
the ubiquity slide-show, and there were problems getting zram working,
but it has been flawless in the last several releases.

It /does/ keep getting bigger, but it is a very long way from being 650MB yet!

Note that the current Minimal install CD image for 16.04 is roughly 50MB:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD#A32-bit_PC_.28i386.2C_x86.29

So there is *lots* of room for a minimal CD with little more than
X.org, LXDE and a web browser.

Bodhi and WattOS are about 550MB in the current versions.

And old hardware support /does/ get removed. The transition from
XFree86 to X.org removed support for a lot of old graphics cards, for
instance, and mainly leaves only PCI/PCI-E cards: all the old ISA and
VL-Bus cards are gone, and from my own experience, finding working
drivers for old AGP hardware today is very difficult.

There are Cardbus USB 2 adaptors and they work. I have given it away
now, but I used to have a 2001 Acer-manufactured IBM 1200 Series
Thinkpad which had only USB and used such cards with it.

But you do need Cardbus (the PCMCIA equivalent of PCI). It is not
possible with original PCMCIA.

Do you want to make an effort to create a CD sized alternate iso file,
or is it time for Lubuntu to abandon those old computers, that only
boot from CD?

We can suggest to try booting via Plop and a USB boot drive
(chainloading after Plop has supplied a USB driver).

Nio:

Though I wish there were a Lubuntu version that would boot from CD, from
what I have seen over the years, if a big effort were made to make this
possible, it would most likely be only a temporary victory.

As time goes on, new functionality goes into the kernel, and support for
older machines is kept (again, we don't want to abandon those machines),
so the kernel keeps getting bigger. I would not want the kernel
developers to remove support for older hardware, so removing older stuff
to make room for the new is not (to me) a good idea.

Also, in the repository, as more useful things become available, those
new things become used, and eventually become essential. So again, the
essential repository components' space on the install CD gradually grows.

So far, even my oldest machines have been able to boot from USB (using
Plop), including using the older USB 1.0 ports, which are slow, but not
impossibly slow). My problems with booting from USB have been problems
with the USB Creator software.

It's a good point, although I must admit, I no longer have any such
computers. The Mac mini I'm typing on (via a 26-year-old classic Apple
Extended II keyboard) doesn't have an optical drive at all, and I
don't miss it.

Some other Ubuntu meta-distros (albeit not official ones) come without
preinstalled productivity apps: for instance, Bodhi Linux:

http://www.bodhilinux.com/

That approach would work: a core OS with desktop and a web browser,
enough to get online and install everything else.

On the other hand, there's a fork of Lubuntu for older PCs -- LXLE:

http://www.lxle.net/

Perhaps it's time to leave the legacy kit to them?
