Re: [lubuntu-users] USB flash drive filesystem

2019-09-02 Thread Thunder Beaver
Most of the time I use F2FS (https://f2fs.wiki.kernel.org/) for any
flash drive and some SSD partitions. It's built specifically for them.
However, not all devices or OSes support it.
That could be a plus if you ever lose it because it'll be more likely to
either be thrown out or formatted. (Of course, I also recommend you
encrypt everything.)

Not to be "argumentative" but . . . considering that most operating system
installs are going to be larger than 4GB, the "exFAT" option seems like the
just fine decision for the base formatting. Of course if you are going to
try an install on the drive then you will be formatting it via the
installer to something like "ext4" or what have you. Then the "exFAT v
FAT32" decision is . . . somewhat "moot." It something that obviously can
easily be changed or re-done, numerous times in the life of the drive.

I think it is formatted as exFAT but am not sure.

Any ideas?

Thanks :)

Hi Ian,

It depends how you want to use it. Maybe you want

- to store data at home
- to move data between several computers
- to test Lubuntu
- to install Lubuntu
- to run Lubuntu persistent live
- ...

The following link may help you select a suitable partition table and
file system,

PPS:

FAT32:

max. file size 4 GiB, max. volume size is 16 TiB

When not using FAT32:

There are various opinions regarding wear and speed, when using a
journaling FS.

PS:

FAT32 is also good to share data on Linux machines, between different
user IDs. If you really want to temporarily store xattrs and privileges
you could use a tar archive on the FAT32 formatted USB stick.

Usually they are FAT32 formatted. I usually stay with FAT32, so they
are compatible to even very old Windows machines, my Roland guitar
synth, DVB-T receivers, the BIOS ... briefly, when formatted with
FAT32, they are compatible with everything.

If I understand things correctly if formatted with a FAT type os e.g
fat16.,32, not sure what exFAT probably allows larger file systems,  it
can be read from and written to by a wide range of operating systems
with less issues.

I am sure others will correct me and or comment further.  So please
don't take the above at face value,  we need more expert input on this .
