[BAROQUE-LUTE] new theorbo

2008-03-28 Thread Rob MacKillop
I've been reminded that some of you on this Baroque Lute list are not on the
Lute list, so here is a cross posting (sorry if you have received it twice).

I have a wonderful new theorbo. Sound file and pics:
http://www.rmguitar.info/theorbo.htm

Rob

PS I suppose a theorbo is a baroque lute of sorts, so not off
topic...possibly the first baroque lute...?

I had a problem with this. I paid for the download with paypal. The money
was taken out of my account, but the download didn't work. Now I'm going to
have to negotiate downloading the files again for free, or get my money back

If you can't work things out with the company, Paypal usually will
refund your money. Go to the main Paypal page, find your transaction
and open a dispute (but try to sort it out with seller first).

I agree, Jean-Marie, they do need to do so something to improve their
service. I have just had an email from them asking ME to apologise to THEM
for making people on this lute list aware of the problems I have had. They
accuse me of not being able to download a file. However, it seems from other
remarks on this list that I am not the only one who is incapable of saving a
file!

They have also offered me one file to download at a time - many tracks. I
can't be bothered.

Poor Franco Pavan - a player well-worth hearing. Hopefully in the future he
will record with a proper record company, one which doesn't accuse its
customers of being incompetent in the most basic of computer operations.

They obviously read this list. I'm sure some of you have had no problems,
but clearly some of us have had problems. Apparently we should all apologise
to them, so here goes: I am indeed sorry I bothered trying to download one
of your discs. It won't happen again.

I'm so sorry this didn't work out. I want to encourage downloads, especially

Do they perhaps also sell CDs? Or does Franco Pavan have the right to
sell them himself under the CD format.
Personally, I have rarely downloaded music for fear of saturating my
computer.
Often, the performer has a right to sell directly. I have certainly
bought CDs directly from certain performers. I will not say which
ones for fear they were bending the rules.

Dear Jeff

Hi, David--

I was asked to play the piece with a student ensemble a couple years ago.
They all played modern instruments at 440. I played a gut-strung theorbo
in A that was generally tuned at 415. I ended up rewriting the part just
so I had something to play--if I'd had my way, I would perhaps have used
an archlute or even a largish lute, but the director insisted on the
theorbo (looked cool!). As I recall, the middle movement was not bad, but
the outer movements were very active way up the neck.

Anyway, it was a very unpleasant musical experience and not something I
want to do again soon. Based on my experience, I'm convinced that the part
was not written for a theorbo in A with top two strings in re-entrant
tuning.

 Good luck.

 jeff

range is A1 till a'. C and C# are both needed, as are E and E-flat, F and

2008-03-28 Thread alexander . batov
Just a few words in defense of E lucevan le stelle.

I feel sorry that a number of people on this list were put off by the
download problems. I\'m sure the company will do their best to resolve
them; they are very well aware of the problem.

Well, I had some minor problems with my downloads too but eventually it
all worked OK (it was sorted out through a few friendly email exchanges).
And was really worth it! Marco Pavan\'s interpretation of Mouton\'s music
is quite amazing, perhaps the best so far (in my liking anyway). I only
wish he could record more of the French 11-course repertoire.

Alexander

PS: By the way, Eduardo Egüez’s Tombeau from E lucevan le stelle is really
good too!

I think it's hard for a small label to meet the standards in all ways,
but I think its worth supporting them,

as their music is quite nice and comes at a fair price.

sites, with no problem at all. I hope this is a one-off.

Congrats. It's lovely to eye and ear.

I brought this home on Tuesday from Malcolm Prior's workshop - a stunning
theorbo in A, 85cms string length.

I've uploaded a photographic history of its construction, and an mp3 file of
Piccinini's Corrente Prima - a slower than I would have liked performance,
but I think (hope) you will forgive me! These are difficult instruments to
get around on, and I haven't had much time:

This was my first commission for Malcolm Prior, but it certainly won't be my
last. He had a 10c ready for shipping to Germany which I fell head over
heels in love with. Malcolm has had an on/off/on/off building career these
last few years as he twice became a father, but he is now very much back
into building lutes, and by all accounts better than ever. I think he has
reached the top rank of luthiers. He is currently updating his website, but
it is already well worth a visit. Excuse my gushing - I am not on commission

Thanks for the plug with Magnatune. They have been a very good company to
work with.

I hope to obtain a copy of the Mouton disc.

it was not the same with them. It's a pity, because the couple od Cds I

Franco Pavan who does a very good job indeed.

If, as you suspect Rob, they read this list, I do hope they will manage to
improve the situation. In the meanwhile I have given up downloading from
their site...

Too bad, especially as they have good music to propose !

I had a problem with this. I paid for the download with paypal. The money
was taken out of my account, but the download didn't work. Now I'm going
  to
have to negotiate downloading the files again for free, or get my money

[LUTE] Re: Fingering question

2008-03-28 Thread Arthur Ness
- Original Message -
From: Ron Andrico [EMAIL PROTECTED]

(One issue with Francesco' 'La Compagna' is that the piece may
not really be his after all, coming from a much later source.)

ooo

Victor Coelho's theory was throughly knocked down at the
Francesco conference in Milan by Chris Wilson. A third source
has surfaced for the Compagna ricercar, likewise attributed to
Francesco. The Siena MS has works from throughout the 16th
century, including one of the first works by Francesco to appear
in print. It was printed in 1529 in a corrupt version, and the
correct version appears 50 years later in a retrospective
anthology of Italian lute music, the Siena MS. Nothing in
between. The Siena lute book is perhaps the
single most important Italian source of the century. Its contents
range from music from the Petrucci era through the 1590s, in
readings that are eminently superior to almost every other
source. It has lots of pieces from the early quarter century,
and surely we wouldn't attribute them all to composers from the
end of the century just because there is no earlier extant copy.

That a lute virtuoso from the hills of Tuscany was composing
works for lute and putting Francesco's name on them is utter
nonsense. Victor's theory about Leonardo da Vinci's beard is
ingeneous, but it just doesn't fly. Plop! I have already
commented just a few days ago on how literally tons of lute
music have disappeared, and so lack of an early printed edition
is not sign that the work is not by Francesco. Manscripts and
prints which may have contained it are simply lost. Elsewhere I
commented on the Casteliono Book II that Mdme Thibault let me
use. La Compagna may very well be in a first Casteliono (Book I),
which has not survived in a currently accsessible public
collection. If there was a print with No. 34 from about 1547,
that is
probably where it was (is?). Rumor has it that . . .

Victor himself has admitted he was mistaken in unattributing
La Compagna from Francesco's works. Nice theory. Rest assured
lutenists can ignorre Leonard da Vinci's beard and all that, and
once
again safely attribute No. 34 to Francesco da Milano.
