LaTeX error ignored by 1.04 but not by 1.15

2000-07-31 Thread Lionel Portmann

In a figure (float) caption, I want to put within the text some math
symboles. If I use for instance an overrightarrow over even a single
letter, I get an error from Latex. With Lyx 1.04, this error was
ignored, (no grey box) and the DVI came out all right (fine for me).
With Lyx 1.15 the error is caught, and I get a grey box in my Lyx
document, and no DVI (bad for me). Actually, Lyx 1.04 and 1.15 write the
same Latex code, which triggers the same error.

These errors come when I use overrightarrow, overbrace, etc., but not
with overline or tilde!

Latex error looks like this :

! Illegal parameter number in definition of \reserved@a.
to be read again
   \crcr
l.40 ...n isolant, soit un conducteur métalique. }

My questions are the following (I am not (yet) a Latex guru, thanks Lyx)
:
- Has anybody got the same problem.
- Is it related to a specific Latex distribution
- Is it related to a package
- Is there a workaround within Lyx 1.15

No, certainly. It is just intended to output some Latex compatible with

this class formats a "preprint" output, which is completly different of

Whether it could be included in LyX,huh... maybe without my signature..
Seriously, I think you shouldn't, because elsart provides a lot of stuff
that is not yet handle by this layout. So people could be confused if LyX
claimed to provide an "elsart" layout ... with only 10% of the features.
At now, this is no more than a template layout.

I sent it just to help, and I'll do it again if needed. Once it
will be a little bit more polish (any volunteer?), it will certainly
helps.

newbie tries to import cls files

2000-07-31 Thread Bob Torres

Hello all,

I've recently started using LyX with the aim of finding a package robust enough
to handle my dissertation writing. After writing my thesis in M$ Word, I'm
loathe to return to it after corrupted chapters, etc. What's more, I find LyX
quite impressive, and think it will be perfect for dissertation writing.

LyX so far has treated me well. Recently, though, I've run into a problem that
I can't seem to resolve. I'm trying to make use of my University's LaTeX
dissertation class (they say it is for LaTex 2e), but I'm unable to get LyX to
load it. Here's what I did, as per the customization docs:

1. I put the class file (cornell.cls) into /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/base and
did texhash.
2. I created a cornell.layout file in my ~/.lyx/layouts directory. Since I
don't want to add more than what I'm hoping the cornell.cls will provide, I
simply made the file 2 lines: the obligatory first line about not deleting,
and a second line which consists of

\DeclareLaTeXClass [cornell, report]{cornell}

I include report since cornell.cls depends on it in turn.

3. I reconfigure LyX. LyX 'sees' the new class, but gives me an error when I
try to select it, telling me that it is unable to switch to the new document
class.

I'm hoping that I won't have to "roll my own' since I find the documentation on
doing so in the LyX manual a little confusing (this is surely a reflection on
my limited abilities and not the docs). Am I missing something, or is there an
easier way to import these class files? I did search the list - people have
reported similar problems, but there's never been a satisfactory answer.

many thanks in advance for any help.

best regards

bob Torres

p.s. FWIW, I'm using v1.1.5 of LyX

In foiltex all figures and floats are treated the same (ie. all floats are
placed "here"). If you don't want a caption delete the caption line. You
can also just use Insert-Figure instead of Insert-Float-Figure and
write your own caption in the Standard paragraph style underneath/above

You are perhaps a couple of lines away from a working solution.
At the moment your file doesn't contain any descriptions of the paragraph
styles. Since you say cornell depends on report you should be able to
just copy the contents of the report.layout into cornell.layout and
everything will work. It might even be possible to instead add the
following line:
Input report.layout

This should have the same effect as LyX shouldn't get confused by the
header comments in report.layout.

I'm hoping that I won't have to "roll my own' since I find the
documentation on doing so in the LyX manual a little confusing (this
is surely a reflection on my limited abilities and not the docs). Am
I missing something, or is there an easier way to import these class
files? I did search the list - people have reported similar problems,
but there's never been a satisfactory answer.

There may still be a need to fix the cornell.layout if for example there
are other paragraph environments that aren't in report. If cornell just
redefines the look of the existing report class then you shouldn't have to
change anything (although you might want to change the screen fonts to
match those of the output).

As for an easier way to import the class files... well it would be nice to
be able to scan a LaTeX class or style file and extract valid command and
environment names and how to represent them onscreen. This is hard enough
to do by hand let alone trying to write a script to do it. So the easiest
way is to copy an existing layout that supports most of what your new
class does and modify it.

newbie tries to import cls files

\DeclareLaTeXClass [cornell, report]{cornell}

You
can also just use Insert-Figure instead of Insert-Float-Figure and
write your own caption in the Standard paragraph style underneath/above
it.

So the easiest
way is to copy an existing layout that supports most of what your new
class does and modify it.

i never used foiltex, so i'm not sure if i understand
all well:
do you mean the same caption like the one in

if yes, you can define \renewcommand\figurename{}

use package color and define your own color:
\definecolor{myColor}{rgb}{0.9,0.9,0.9}% rgb color model
\textcolor{myColor}{...the text ...}

with fancyhdr

\fancyfoot[RE,LO]{\thepage}

   \crcr
l.40 ...n isolant, soit un conducteur métalique. }

My questions are the following (I am not (yet) a Latex guru, thanks Lyx)
:
- Has anybody got the same problem.
- Is it related to a specific Latex distribution
- Is it related to a package
- Is there a workaround within Lyx 1.15

There has been a fix in 1.1.6cvs about slowness of backspace, but I
did not apply it to 1.1.5fix1 because I did not want to create
problems in this release.

Could you try the patch in

\DeclareLaTeXClass [cornell, report]{cornell}

You
can also just use Insert->Figure instead of Insert->Float->Figure and
write your own caption in the Standard paragraph style underneath/above
it.

We're glad you're impressed.

So the easiest
way is to copy an existing layout that supports most of what your new
class does and modify it.
