Re: French spell check problem...
Sounds like the french dictionary is not available. Do you use ispell or aspell (Bearbeiten - Einstellungen - Sprache - Rechtschreibung)? Install the french distionary for ispell/aspell from the SuSE CD, if you don't have already (check /usr/lib/ispell or /usr/lib/aspell). Starting LyX from the console might give you a spellchecker error which is more informative. Hi, yeah, thanks, starting LyX from the console did the trick... ;-) Apparently LyX was looking for a file named usr/lib/ispell/french.hash. Looked there, found francais.hash, and renamed that to french.hash. Renamed francais.aff to french.aff as well, but dunno if that was necessary (or sensible). It's seems to be part of the spellchecker, though, so I reckon if LyX is looking for french.hash, the .aff file should be called french as well... Seems as if everything's working all right now. :-) So, thanks a lot for the help, Malte

table caption
Hi ! I have a problem concerning to table captions in a table float: In my document I have inserted several table floats with captions and everything goes fine. But the last float I've added cause following error message by compiling with pdflatex: pdfTeX warning (ext4): destination with the same identifier (name{table.1}) h \end(document) ] (.AgBi-temp.aux) When I change the caption to standard format, it works. I'm using Lyx 1.2.0. Any ideas ?? Center Chapter and Title
Hi folks, I'm writing my thesis using book class and it give me the Chapter no. and the Title of Chapter on the left side. First, how do I center my chapter no. and tile of chapter? The lower one I took from my thesis and the upper one I took from my present work. For my thesis I have taken upper ones as A,B,C,D,E,F,P,Q,V,W but the lower one was only r. No you didn't. Just try writting $\mathcal{a}$ in TeX mode and see what happens. Please refer to my another posting, where I have given two different outputs, one with r and one with R. What I have written is that, the lower one I could produce in 1.1.5/6 versions, but not now. Since I have recently upgraded to 1.2.0, I can't reproduce that. Thanks S K Tomar

Appendix not working correctly
Hi, The last part of my current Lyx document is an Appendix. For this I switched on the Appendix in the menu. The problem is that in the final output file (Postscript) Appendix A is shown correctly, but all the following ones are displayed as Chapter B, Chapter C etc. instead of Appendix B This is both in the table of contents as well as in the actual headlines. Does anybody know a solution? Thanks Max

Cygwin Lyx CPU usage
Hi, I'm using Lyx 1.2.0 on cygwin. The CPU usage by LyX is consistently above 30% even though I may not be working in LyX at all. The memory usage is also considerably high. Sometimes, LyX starts doing something and it freezes my computer for a minute or so while it's doing whatever it's doing... Has anybody else noticed this and can anyone explain this? Thanks, nirmal
Lyx Insists on Using EPS Rather than JPEG
I am writing a Lyx document (1.1.6fix3) which includes many jpeg images. To conserve time and disk space, I do not want to go through the process of converting the jpeg images to .eps files. Because pdflatex handles jpeg files, I am assuming things should be straightforward. However, I notice curious behaviour from Lyx whenever I go File - Export - LaTeX. In the tex file that gets produced, all my references to jpeg files, eg. figure.jpg, are now references to eps files, eg. figure.eps. I also notice that when I go View - PDF(pdflatex), Lyx inserts errors wherever I have a figure with a jpeg image. The error says something like Unknown graphics extension: .eps. \includegraphics{figure.eps}. I don't understand why Lyx is changing all my jpeg references to eps. I realize that if I export a latex file, manually change .eps to .jpg, and run pdflatex on the edited file from the command line, everything works fine. It would just be much nicer if I could simply pull down the View menu and generate the pdf document from within Lyx. Could anyone explain how to stop Lyx from changing all the jpeg references? Many thanks! Martin
Re: Cygwin Lyx CPU usage
Most of the times that Lyx freezes the computer for a while is because of the autosave feature.

But the last float I've added cause following error message by compiling with pdflatex: pdfTeX warning (ext4): destination with the same identifier (name{table.1}) h \end(document) ] (.AgBi-temp.aux) When I change the caption to standard format, it works. The spacing for the TOC or bibliography can be changed using the paragraph dialog (in lyx 1.2.0), or by using \begin{singlespace} .. \end{singlespace} The spacing for quotes can be changed by putting the following code in the preamble: \let\oldquote=\quote \let\oldendquote=\endquote \renewenvironment{quote} {\begin{singlespace}\oldquote} {\oldendquote\end{singlespace}}
page margins
I am using koma-script book class. When I set the page margins, such as top and bottom 1 inch, I get margins longer than that. The page style is chosen as plain. How can I get that accomplished? The margins I get from the side of the paper to the text is around 1.8 inches... Is there a way around this?

problem with pstricks and PDF
Hi, I have a figure that I created in dia and exported to Pstricks tex format. I then input the file in LyX. The postscript output is fine but when I export to PDF using any of the three methods, the figure is missing. How do I get the figure in the PDF file without using ps2pdf on the ps file directly? Thanks, nirmal

Martin

Most of the times that Lyx freezes the computer for a while is because of the autosave feature. E.g. an "note" style that writes its content in italics, could be handed over to latex as \newcommand[1]{\note}{\textit{#1}} (Of course it would not be created by typing this as ERT but with GUI.) If you want to change the "note" style from italics to "in-braces", say the macro would be \newcommand[1]{\note}{[#1]} This would be possible with my "generic macro support" but _not_ with a pure character-styles approach (at least if uses the existing layout>character menu for its choices). How do I expect the GUI to work: Definition: >Edit>Create_Macro% or another nice place and name popup: Name: note % give it a name and press OK %a red box appears at the cursor position, the cursor is in it type #1 mark and set to italics via >Layout>Character ESC % the box now shows the name (note) Use: a) without selection >Edit>Macro>note % or a keybinding + note, % latex freaks will like "\" + "note" % the red box appears with nothing in it % type whatever you will -- it becomes italicised ESC or M-c Space %leave the box b) with selection >Edit>Macro>note % or a keybinding + note % the selection becomes italicised Redefinition: Click note-box % the italic #1 appears Mark the #1 M-c Space % set to normal change to [#1] ESC % now all notes will change to [note-text] Guenter Guenter -- G.Milde at physik.tu-dresden.de

Just now I did the following: Open the .ps file in xv, selected the portion and saved in .gif format. "r" is with superscript "N" and "R" is alone. The lower one I took from my thesis and the upper one I took from my present work. For my thesis I have taken upper ones as A,B,C,D,E,F,P,Q,V,W but the lower one was only r. Please find attached both the .gif files, which you can view in LyX also. Thanks S K Tomar

BTW: Is it LyX looking for the wrong names or do the names differ in different aspell/ispell installations? Jürgen

No you didn't. Just try writting $\mathcal{a}$ in TeX mode and see what happens.

It would be wonderful if the appearance in the LyX resembled the appearance on paper, just like Environments. I can't see anything in this screenshot (the text is too small). Anyway, \mathcal only works with uppercase letter!

Set the spacing in the document dialog, and not by changing the preamble. The spacing for the TOC or bibliography can be changed using the paragraph dialog (in lyx 1.2.0), or by using \begin{singlespace} .. \end{singlespace} The spacing for quotes can be changed by putting the following code in the preamble: \let\oldquote=\quote \let\oldendquote=\endquote \renewenvironment{quote} {\begin{singlespace}\oldquote} {\oldendquote\end{singlespace}}
