Macros

Hello List,

does anybody know, if it's still possible to create macros in the
minibuffer, like it was in former versions of LyX? Because, when I
define a new command in the LaTeX-header-menu of LyX, there's always the
ERT in the document.

It would be nice to have this option again, but I didn't find the
mini-buffer-commands needed.

A Windows frontend? The qt version from Ruurd feels very native:

The only strange thing is, that the clipboard seems to work only in
one direction: LyX can write something into the System Clipboard,
but it can't read from it, if other programs have written the content. Why?

I understood that interleaf could export to (framemaker)  MIF and then
there are converters from mif to lyx.
Don't know how well either works, but the MIF route seems to be a
standard way from interleaf to framemaker.

not that framemaker works under linux any more.

Is this really a bug? Someone just told me that I have to select 
Edit - Paste External Selection from the menu. I think it should
be trivial to attach this to the ctrl+v key. Isn't it?

and it didn't change. I think this is one of Lyx features :-). It isn't?

Interleaf, like many other proprietary packages, assumes that its
PostScript output is part of a larger (Interleaf- generated) PostScript
file.  Each fragment makes assumptions about the environment, e.g.,
counting on certain macros or variables to be defined, perhaps through
a prologue.  The troff PostScript postprocessor would have to know
about every such environment for every proprietary package a priori,
and put it in the prologue for you.  Every now and then something
works, often enough to lead you to believe it will always work.  If
you're a programmer, it's a bit like taking a C function that requires
global variables and never initializing them.  PostScript is, indeed, a
programming language, not just a printer format.
3.2.3	Exporting Graphics

Many users are confused on how to export graphics.  Some users report
success when saving the Interleaf document as a PostScript file, then
using other packages to convert the PostScript to whatever format is
desired.
Once you've got PostScript, use the GNU package GhostScript to convert
it to PBM (Portable Bit Map), GIF (Graphics Interchange Format), or PCX
(PC Paintbrush).  GhostScript is available at all the popular GNU ftp
sites.  These file formats are all compile-time options, so if you've
already got GhostScript at your site make sure it has the right formats
compiled in.
If you need a format other than one listed above, convert to PBM first
then use the PBMPLUS suite of conversion filters to convert PBM to
whatever you need.  PBMPLUS handles a ton of file formats, and is
available at many popular ftp sites.
If you're not on a Unix system, GhostScript is available for MS-DOS and
VMS, and PBMPLUS is available on the Amiga (and possibly other
platforms).  You can also find other graphics conversion programs for
most platforms.  PBM and GIF formats in particular are rather common,
so if you can convert to one of those it's likely you can find
something to convert to the format you really want.
Beware of converting multiple page documents to a graphics format.
Most graphics formats don't really have the concept of page.
GhostScript will still do the conversion, but will convert each page as
a separate image.  That's good.  Unfortunately, it puts all those
images in the same file.  That's bad.  It's pretty easy to write a sed,
awk, or perl script to split multiple PBM images out of a single file;
I've never really tried it for the other graphics formats.

210x98 dpi; this is the resolution of a fax machine.  (Use 210x196

Thanks for the pointer, Matej. Unfortunately this binary is linked 
against QT 2 while I'm using 3.1.1-mt, so I'd prefer an optimized 
built linked against this version.

Thx for the FAQ but I already read it.

Sorry not to answer that question before, but yes I need to edit the 
documents in the future.
Those I don't need to edit anymore I save as ps and then pdf, thats no 
problem at all.

The html output is just to output with Cyberleaf and I don't have that.

I checked my Interleaf version i can export it in normal interleaf, in 
ps, and in ASCI (which is IAF).

Any other Format (Framemaker or Word) I can reach with Filtrix, but that 
just gives me errors

Anybody familiar with Filtrix?

Sry to bother you all with this, but I think I am really stuck with that.
I really appreciate your help.

location of bibtex bst files

Is there any way to have LyX remember the initial directory for bibtex 
databases (.bib files)? The way I've got things set up, I need to search 
for it each time: LyX defaults its own bin folder. There's a better than 
even chance that this is due to something I did wrong in setup, so if 
there's some file/entry which should store this, could someone please tell 
me what it is?

It would change the numbers on the others (decrementing each by one, thus 1,
2 etc..) since you've defined the others as sections but it won't make them
subsections and  hence won't number them as subsections (therefore, you
won't get 0.2, 0.3 ..)

What about backing up the original prettyref.sty and then translate the

i finally upgraded to 1.3.2 and am still having the same problem that 
landscape comes out
upside down when i export to postcript even when i remove the -swap 
from gv -swap.  
the pdf looks ok when i read/print from acroread.  any ideas?

opts,conversion,inputs, and outputs.
we're probably using different versions?  yes, you're using 1.3.2 and 
i'm using 1.2.3.  i still didn't find any reference to gv or swap.

Hi,

When you say it cuts off most of the slide do you mean it cuts off 
roughly the right-most third?  If so this is because of the -t a4 
option that lyx sticks in when called dvips.  Someone has claimed 
that gs versions from 6.53 onwards don't have this problem but I am 
unable to

test this. (I am running redhat 7.3 and it appears to be almost 
impossible to upgrade ghostscript on it.) I simply have to export as 
latex and run dvips manually at the moment :(

The upside down problem is caused by lyx sticking -swap in the options

for gv. This can be fixed in edit-preferences-file 
formats-postscript-viewer where it should say gv -swap at the 
moment. Just change that to gv.

P.S. I am using lyx 1.3.2 but seem to have had the same problems.



 

Hmmm... All I can see from those examples is that the landscape is 
upside down.  As you are using pdf and not postscript my suggestions 
may not have been relevant.

If you have time/energy you could upgrade to 1.3.2 and then it would 
be easier for me/us to help you.

Bibtex and languages

Hi, I'm using Bibtex to generate my bibliography but I can't find how to
use the spanish language, is there a way to do this, I mean, for
instance, if I aggregate the next entry to the .bib file:

title = {Ecuaciones Diferenciales}
}

I would like it to use a citation and put something like:

Note that and changed for y, the equivalent in spanish.

Macros

Hello List,

does anybody know, if it's still possible to create macros in the
minibuffer, like it was in former versions of LyX? Because, when I
define a new command in the LaTeX-header-menu of LyX, there's always the
ERT in the document.

It would be nice to have this option again, but I didn't find the
mini-buffer-commands needed.

I understood that interleaf could export to (framemaker)  MIF and then
there are converters from mif to lyx.
Don't know how well either works, but the MIF route seems to be a
standard way from interleaf to framemaker.

Is this really a bug? Someone just told me that I have to select 
Edit - Paste External Selection from the menu. I think it should
be trivial to attach this to the ctrl+v key. Isn't it?

Thanks for the pointer, Matej. Unfortunately this binary is linked 
against QT 2 while I'm using 3.1.1-mt, so I'd prefer an optimized 
built linked against this version.

Sorry not to answer that question before, but yes I need to edit the 
documents in the future.
Those I don't need to edit anymore I save as ps and then pdf, thats no 
problem at all.

The html output is just to output with Cyberleaf and I don't have that.

I checked my Interleaf version i can export it in normal interleaf, in 
ps, and in ASCI (which is IAF).

Any other Format (Framemaker or Word) I can reach with Filtrix, but that 
just gives me errors

Anybody familiar with Filtrix?

Sry to bother you all with this, but I think I am really stuck with that.
I really appreciate your help.

location of bibtex bst files

Is there any way to have LyX remember the initial directory for bibtex 
databases (.bib files)? The way I've got things set up, I need to search 
for it each time: LyX defaults its own bin folder. There's a better than 
even chance that this is due to something I did wrong in setup, so if 
there's some file/entry which should store this, could someone please tell 
me what it is?

It would change the numbers on the others (decrementing each by one, thus 1,
2 etc..) since you've defined the others as sections but it won't make them
subsections and  hence won't number them as subsections (therefore, you
won't get 0.2, 0.3 ..)

upside down when i export to postcript even when i remove the -swap 
from gv -swap.  
the pdf looks ok when i read/print from acroread.  any ideas?

Hi,

When you say it cuts off most of the slide do you mean it cuts off 
roughly the right-most third?  If so this is because of the -t a4 
option that lyx sticks in when called dvips.  Someone has claimed 
that gs versions from 6.53 onwards don't have this problem but I am 
unable to

test this. (I am running redhat 7.3 and it appears to be almost 
impossible to upgrade ghostscript on it.) I simply have to export as 
latex and run dvips manually at the moment :(

The upside down problem is caused by lyx sticking -swap in the options

for gv. This can be fixed in edit-preferences-file 
formats-postscript-viewer where it should say gv -swap at the 
moment. Just change that to gv.

P.S. I am using lyx 1.3.2 but seem to have had the same problems.



 

Hmmm... All I can see from those examples is that the landscape is 
upside down.  As you are using pdf and not postscript my suggestions 
may not have been relevant.

If you have time/energy you could upgrade to 1.3.2 and then it would 
be easier for me/us to help you.

Bibtex and languages

Hi, I'm using Bibtex to generate my bibliography but I can't find how to
use the spanish language, is there a way to do this, I mean, for
instance, if I aggregate the next entry to the .bib file:

@book{blanchard, 
author = {Paul Blanchard and Robert Devaney}
year = {1988}
title = {Ecuaciones Diferenciales}
}

I would like it to use a citation and put something like:

[Paul Blanchard y Robert Devaney, 1988]

Note that and changed for y, the equivalent in spanish.

Any help will be greatly appreaciated.

Macros

Hello List,

does anybody know, if it's still possible to create macros in the
minibuffer, like it was in former versions of LyX? Because, when I
define a new command in the LaTeX-header-menu of LyX, there's always the
ERT in the document.

It would be nice to have this option again, but I didn't find the
mini-buffer-commands needed.

A Windows frontend? The qt version from Ruurd feels very native:

one direction: LyX can write something into the System Clipboard,
but it can't read from it, if other programs have written the content. Why?

I understood that interleaf could export to (framemaker)  MIF and then
there are converters from mif to lyx.
Don't know how well either works, but the MIF route seems to be a
standard way from interleaf to framemaker.

Is this really a bug? Someone just told me that I have to select 
"Edit -> Paste External Selection" from the menu. I think it should
be trivial to attach this to the ctrl+v key. Isn't it?

Really strange behaviour. My first reaction was: *WTF?!?!* ...

and it didn't change. I think this is one of Lyx features :-). It isn't?

Thanks for the pointer, Matej. Unfortunately this binary is linked 
against QT 2 while I'm using 3.1.1-mt, so I'd prefer an optimized 
built linked against this version.

Thx for the FAQ but I already read it.

Sorry not to answer that question before, but yes I need to edit the 
documents in the future.
Those I don't need to edit anymore I save as ps and then pdf, thats no 
problem at all.

The html output is just to output with Cyberleaf and I don't have that.

I checked my Interleaf version i can export it in normal interleaf, in 
ps, and in ASCI (which is IAF).

Any other Format (Framemaker or Word) I can reach with Filtrix, but that 
just gives me errors

Anybody familiar with Filtrix?

Sry to bother you all with this, but I think I am really stuck with that.
I really appreciate your help.

location of bibtex bst files

Is there any way to have LyX remember the initial directory for bibtex 
databases (.bib files)? The way I've got things set up, I need to search 
for it each time: LyX defaults its own bin folder. There's a better than 
even chance that this is due to something I did wrong in setup, so if 
there's some file/entry which should store this, could someone please tell 
me what it is?

It would change the numbers on the others (decrementing each by one, thus 1,
2 etc..) since you've defined the others as sections but it won't make them
subsections and  hence won't number them as subsections (therefore, you
won't get 0.2, 0.3 ..)

i finally upgraded to 1.3.2 and am still having the same problem that 
landscape comes out
upside down when i export to postcript even when i remove the "-swap" 
from "gv -swap."  
the pdf looks ok when i read/print from acroread.  any ideas?

Hi,

When you say it cuts off most of the slide do you mean it cuts off 
roughly the right-most third?  If so this is because of the "-t a4" 
option that lyx sticks in when called dvips.  Someone has claimed 
that gs versions from 6.53 onwards don't have this problem but I am 
unable to

test this. (I am running redhat 7.3 and it appears to be almost 
impossible to upgrade ghostscript on it.) I simply have to export as 
latex and run dvips manually at the moment :(

The upside down problem is caused by lyx sticking "-swap" in the options

for gv. This can be fixed in edit->preferences->file 
formats->postscript->viewer where it should say "gv -swap" at the 
moment. Just change that to "gv".

Hmmm... All I can see from those examples is that the landscape is 
upside down.  As you are using pdf and not postscript my suggestions 
may not have been relevant.

If you have time/energy you could upgrade to 1.3.2 and then it would 
be easier for me/us to help you.

Bibtex and languages

Hi, I'm using Bibtex to generate my bibliography but I can't find how to
use the spanish language, is there a way to do this, I mean, for
instance, if I aggregate the next entry to the .bib file:

@book{blanchard, 
author = {Paul Blanchard and Robert Devaney}
year = {1988}
title = {Ecuaciones Diferenciales}
}

I would like it to use a citation and put something like:

[Paul Blanchard y Robert Devaney, 1988]

Note that "and" changed for "y", the equivalent in spanish.

Any help will be greatly appreaciated.
