Can't see Math-Mode's symbols
Hi everyone! First of all: Many thanks for the overall Lyx-project and of course its latest release 1.3.3! :) I've compiled 1.3.2 and 1.3.3 on two Debian Sarge machines with a self-compiled QT-3.1.2 using the configure-line ./configure --prefix=/opt/lyx --with-frontend=qt --with-qt-includes=/usr/local/qt/include/ On the one machine, I can see math mode's symbols in LyX, on the other I can't. Something like CTRL+m \pi ENTER ... produces a graphical pi-symbol on the first, but only a red pi on the second. Why can't I see the symbol on the second machine? Any idea how to get it working? Many thanks in advance! Cheers, Markus A. -- The first time any man's freedom is trodden on, we're all damaged. Cpt. Newbie: textclass error upon opening template files.
Dear All, I'm new to Lyx and Latex, but seeing it's potential I'd really like to get it working. I have obtained the most recent version of Miktex (version 2.3) and installed it on my Windows XP machine, along with Lyx for Win32 from http://www.home.zonnet.nl/rareitsma/lyx/. I've been trying to open the template files using File-New From Template, but in nearly every case I'm told that there is a textclass error, and that I am missing .sty files. Should these files have been installed using the method I described above? Because of their absence, LaTeX will not complete it's run and I do not get the desired output. On a second note, would anybody be able to tell me how to download and install new document classes and styles? I'd like to use an astrophysical journal document class, but have no idea what to do with the zipped file once I have obtained it. Any help with either of these problems would be gratefully received! Reasons to use Lyx instead of LaTex?
Hi there, I'm about to start writing my thesis. I'm not a LaTex guru, but I've used it during the last 2 years for everything I've written. I think I should not have many problems doing my thesis wit LaTex, but I'm taking a look at alternatives (mainly because I don't know how handy would be using a normal text editor for a big latex document). So I downloaded and installed LyX. It looks very nice to me, but I would like to know from those who use it on a regular basis what Lyx has to offer to a LaTex user. For example: can I import and use in LyX custom LaTex document styles (i.e. the styles they use in my university for thesis)? Is LyX very flexible (i.e. can I do everything I do in LaTex - mmmhhh.. what a question :) )? In short, I would like to hear the pros and cons of LyX in respect to LaTex. Thanks very much for your time, Francesco -- In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure-dome decree: Where Alph, the sacred river, ran Through caverns measureless to man Down to a sunless sea.

You shouldn't probably install new textclasses, but you have to tell LyX where the layout for it is.
