export QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt3

(or wherever your qt lives) before the configure run should help. IIRC it
does not want to run tr but $QTDIR/bin/findtr, but some variables are empty
and so it does not find the correct program.

You need a new gcc compiler, which is made available as rpm by suse at their 
inofficial ../people/.. room on their ftp server. This version fixes some 
problems with C++.

My last message received no answer. I do miss a french translation of LyX user 
interface ( a .ui file). I know I can cook my own by myself. But I'd rather 
use a more standard one. I had one which came along with 1.3.1, lost. None 
with 1.3.3 sources. Does such a thing exist ? If so, please mail it to me. 
Fast (I have a few impatient new users who will go back to their Words if 
they can't use LyX in french).

Lucky you.

In any cae, you can work around this particular bug by repalcing this
line with 'return 0;' or similar. LyX won't notice as it doesn't use
this particular function IIRC.

There is no such thing like an french ui: the bynary internationalization
files like
../share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/lyx.mo
built at lyx configure time from lyx-fr.po file knows
about the french translation of default.ui, layouts, ...

If lyx is built --without-nls, this won't work however.
Idem if gettext is not installed I guess.

You may check the existence of the .mo files, and perhaps review your
installation procedure.

If you really want to look at the ui-files from different versions of lyx, 
take a look at the CVS webinterface:

New feature poll?

I just read the lyx the latest LyX development news, and noted that 
there are great interface improvements in the pipeline: cutomisable 
toolbars (I am looking forward to insert floats from the toolbar!), more 
structured menus, and new icons. When will lyx-1.3.4 (or 1.4.0) arrive?
Gui improvents are good, but I am also interested in new latex 
functionality being covered by the lyx gui. I am wondering whether it 
would be a good idea to have a poll about what lyx users would like to 
be added to lyx. I think the opinions of the developers on a poll are 
especially important since they are the people who have to implement 
functionality suggested by the users.
So in short: what do we think about a new-features-poll?

Alain, LyX's user interface is fully translated into french.

$ make
$ su
$ make install
$ exit

The translation uses gnu gettext. See the files in the po directory.

Installing lyx should result in these translation files being 
installed in /usr/local/share/locale. Eg, here I have: 
/usr/local/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/lyx-1.3.4cvs.mo

(because I configured lyx as 
./configure --with-version-suffix=-1.3.4cvs
)

I believe that there is a configure option to install only certain 
languages (rather than all of them).

To turn on the french translation:
$ echo $LANG
C
$ LANG=fr_FR
$ export LANG
$ echo $LANG
fr_FR
$ lyx-1.3.4cvs

Under Mac OS 10.3.2 I manually had to set the language in a file. Check

French is one of the few languages that have a complete translation
(even of the docs).

I guess you need to give us more details about what you are doing.

What version of LyX are you using? Are you under windows?

Re: break up an .pdf file into smaller files

I'm writting a lyx document and I want to include some
figures  text from a .pdf document, but not the whole
.pdf. How can I break up my .pdf file into smaller
pieces (ideally I'd like to save each page of the .pdf
as it's own separate file). 

Does any lyx user know of a tool I could use to do
this. 
I've tested several pdf-tools and the best was Adobe Acrobat. I know 
that it is commercial software but also available for Unix/Linux.
With Acrobat you can save all pages as extra pdf. You can also copy 
tables, pictures or text of an existing pdf and export them as a new pdf 
or picture(jpeg, gif). Moreover you will be able to trim single-page 
pdfs to get the right size.

Those instructions (changing ~/.MacOSX/preferences.plist) are a MacOSX
only configuration.  Because LyX/Mac starts as a direct GUI
application, the environment variable needs to be set independent of
shells.  For X11 systems under Linux or Unix, it is probably
sufficient to set and export LANG in the shell.

Is it? That it is the news -- so far the only variant was Acrobat 
Reader, which is not capable of doing all this stuff. And even 
Reader is not in sync with Win/Mac versions (IIRC, I gave up on 
it and using only kghostview/xpdf and eagerly waiting on kpdf).
Oops. You are right, all the things I described are only possible with 
Acrobat Standard or Professional.
And it's astonishing that it's not available for Linux but for MacOS.

  I know that this is one are where the docbook is missing a lot, but  my 
time is not as elastic as I would like it to be. ;-)

   Doesn't LaTeX remove the numbering from components between \frontmatter{}
 and \mainmatter{}?

  I have looked at Herbert's Tips and Tricks site without finding an
answer to my question.

  How can I remove the chapter number for the Preface and begin chapter
numbering at '1' with the following chapter?

I guess you still need to use the starred version (\chapter*)
to remove numbering.
The \frontmatter allows to feedback the contents of the chapter title to
the toc without ERT (a question which must be in the top 10 of
the list :-)

  That's almost too simple. :-)

  I changed the type to \chapter*, then added ERT to:
\addcontentsline{toc}{chapter}{Preface}
\pagenumbering{roman}
\setcounter{page}{1}

placed at the beginning of the preface text. It all works just fine with the
Springer-Verlag monograph style.

I found pdftex.cfg.   It is there under  
/usr/local/share/texmf/pdftex/config/pdftex.cfg

Perhaps I've revealed my ignorance there and running
pdflatex on the .pdf did not make sense.I wasn't
really sure what I was doing, but since
\usepackage{pdfpages} wasn't working for me from
within LyX, I decided to try pdfnup on the command
line.

When I ran the pdfnup script on my .pdf, it also
failed.   When I checked the log file generated, I saw
that it failed at the step pdflatex.   So (not really
comprehending everything that was going on in pdfnup
script) I decided to run pdflatex on my .pdf file to
see what would happen from the command line.Like I
said, maybe that makes no sense, but that was my
thinking there.

This is what pdfnup gives me
 
pdf_nup ./pdfnup temppdffile.pdf 
This is pdfnup version 0.8
Temporary LaTeX file for this job is
/u/reyes/tmp/-.tex
Calling pdflatex...
Failed: output file not written

And this is the .log file from this conversion

You need to edit the pdfnup script and specify the location of the 
pdflatex executable. You'll see this near the top of the pdfnup script:

pdflatex=/usr/bin/pdflatex

Once you've specfied the path to pdflatex (for e.g., 
/usr/bin/pdflatex), then to acheive what you mentioned in your first 
post, i.e. a pdf file for every page in your source pdf file, you 
need to use pdfnup as follows:

pdfnup --nup 1x1 --pages xx SourceFile.pdf

where xx = the page in the source file SourceFile.pdf that you want 
to convert to a pdf file...  repeat for the pages you want by 
changing the value of xx ... pdfnup will automatically name the 
output pdf file (which will be the same every time) so you may need 
to change the name of the output pdf file before re-running the 
script... not sure if there's a way to automate it...

Obvious qn. but.. do you have read access to the pdftex.cfg file? 
You may need to change permissions on this file.. I was able to 
reproduce the above error by changing the permissions on the 
pdftex.cfg file so that I did not have read access to it as myself...

Ugly pdf fonts

When I convert to pdf using the built in export function from the menu
of Lyx 1.3 I get hideously jagged fonts. Anybody know why? What can I

Aah.. so pdflatex doesn't work... okay, so it's a more basic 
problem.. I'm not sure why pdflatex can't find the cfg file... have 
you run texhash recently? Maybe that'll help... hope someone here 
can point out why pdflatex doesn't work...

The permissions look fine actually.. are you able to run pdflatex on 
a regular .tex file and generate a pdf file? Secondly, do you have 
the pdfpages package? kpsewhich pdfpages.sty should tell you if 
it's installed. And thirdly, you may want to check the pdfnup script 
and see what the call to pdflatex does -- this is towards the end of 
the pdfnup file; though I'm guessing pdfnup is not the problem... 
hopefully one of tests will shed some light on what's going wrong..

(or wherever your qt lives) before the configure run should help. IIRC it
does not want to run tr but $QTDIR/bin/findtr, but some variables are empty

You need a new gcc compiler, which is made available as rpm by suse at their 
inofficial ../people/.. room on their ftp server. This version fixes some

use a more standard one. I had one which came along with 1.3.1, lost. None 
with 1.3.3 sources. Does such a thing exist ? If so, please mail it to me.

Lucky you.

In any cae, you can work around this particular bug by repalcing this
line with 'return 0;' or similar. LyX won't notice as it doesn't use
this particular function IIRC.

There is no such thing like an french ui: the bynary internationalization
files like
../share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/lyx.mo
built at lyx configure time from lyx-fr.po file knows
about the french translation of default.ui, layouts, ...

If lyx is built --without-nls, this won't work however.
Idem if gettext is not installed I guess.

You may check the existence of the .mo files, and perhaps review your
installation procedure.

If you really want to look at the ui-files from different versions of lyx, 
take a look at the CVS webinterface:

New feature poll?

I just read the lyx the latest LyX development news, and noted that 
there are great interface improvements in the pipeline: cutomisable 
toolbars (I am looking forward to insert floats from the toolbar!), more 
structured menus, and new icons. When will lyx-1.3.4 (or 1.4.0) arrive?
Gui improvents are good, but I am also interested in new latex 
functionality being covered by the lyx gui. I am wondering whether it 
would be a good idea to have a poll about what lyx users would like to 
be added to lyx. I think the opinions of the developers on a poll are 
especially important since they are the people who have to implement 
functionality suggested by the users.
So in short: what do we think about a new-features-poll?

Alain, LyX's user interface is fully translated into french.

$ make
$ su
$ make install
$ exit

The translation uses gnu gettext. See the files in the po directory.

Installing lyx should result in these translation files being 
installed in /usr/local/share/locale. Eg, here I have: 
/usr/local/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/lyx-1.3.4cvs.mo

(because I configured lyx as 
./configure --with-version-suffix=-1.3.4cvs
)

I believe that there is a configure option to install only certain 
languages (rather than all of them).

To turn on the french translation:
$ echo $LANG
C
$ LANG=fr_FR
$ export LANG
$ echo $LANG
fr_FR
$ lyx-1.3.4cvs

I don't know, whether this is much of a help - it's rather an idea.  
Under Mac OS 10.3.2 I manually had to set the language in a file. Check

compiling exported tex file by hand

I'm writting a lyx document and I want to include some
figures  text from a .pdf document, but not the whole
.pdf. How can I break up my .pdf file into smaller
pieces (ideally I'd like to save each page of the .pdf
as it's own separate file). 

Does any lyx user know of a tool I could use to do
this. 
I've tested several pdf-tools and the best was Adobe Acrobat. I know 
that it is commercial software but also available for Unix/Linux.
With Acrobat you can save all pages as extra pdf. You can also copy 
tables, pictures or text of an existing pdf and export them as a new pdf 
or picture(jpeg, gif). Moreover you will be able to trim single-page 
pdfs to get the right size.

Those instructions (changing ~/.MacOSX/preferences.plist) are a MacOSX
only configuration.  Because LyX/Mac starts as a direct GUI

sufficient to set and export LANG in the shell.

Is it? That it is the news -- so far the only variant was Acrobat 
Reader, which is not capable of doing all this stuff. And even 
Reader is not in sync with Win/Mac versions (IIRC, I gave up on 
it and using only kghostview/xpdf and eagerly waiting on kpdf).
Oops. You are right, all the things I described are only possible with 
Acrobat Standard or Professional.
And it's astonishing that it's not available for Linux but for MacOS.

I guess you still need to use the starred version (\chapter*)
to remove numbering.
The \frontmatter allows to feedback the contents of the chapter title to
the toc without ERT (a question which must be in the top 10 of
the list :-)

  That's almost too simple. :-)

  I changed the type to \chapter*, then added ERT to:
\addcontentsline{toc}{chapter}{Preface}
\pagenumbering{roman}
\setcounter{page}{1}

placed at the beginning of the preface text. It all works just fine with the
Springer-Verlag monograph style.

Perhaps I've revealed my ignorance there and running
pdflatex on the .pdf did not make sense.I wasn't
really sure what I was doing, but since
\usepackage{pdfpages} wasn't working for me from
within LyX, I decided to try pdfnup on the command
line.

When I ran the pdfnup script on my .pdf, it also
failed.   When I checked the log file generated, I saw
that it failed at the step pdflatex.   So (not really
comprehending everything that was going on in pdfnup
script) I decided to run pdflatex on my .pdf file to
see what would happen from the command line.Like I
said, maybe that makes no sense, but that was my
thinking there.

This is what pdfnup gives me
 
pdf_nup ./pdfnup temppdffile.pdf 
This is pdfnup version 0.8
Temporary LaTeX file for this job is
/u/reyes/tmp/-.tex
Calling pdflatex...

You need to edit the pdfnup script and specify the location of the 
pdflatex executable. You'll see this near the top of the pdfnup script:

pdflatex=/usr/bin/pdflatex

Once you've specfied the path to pdflatex (for e.g., 
/usr/bin/pdflatex), then to acheive what you mentioned in your first 
post, i.e. a pdf file for every page in your source pdf file, you 
need to use pdfnup as follows:

pdfnup --nup 1x1 --pages xx SourceFile.pdf

where xx = the page in the source file SourceFile.pdf that you want 
to convert to a pdf file...  repeat for the pages you want by 
changing the value of xx ... pdfnup will automatically name the 
output pdf file (which will be the same every time) so you may need 
to change the name of the output pdf file before re-running the 
script... not sure if there's a way to automate it...

Obvious qn. but.. do you have read access to the pdftex.cfg file? 
You may need to change permissions on this file.. I was able to 
reproduce the above error by changing the permissions on the 
pdftex.cfg file so that I did not have read access to it as myself...

Ugly pdf fonts

Aah.. so pdflatex doesn't work... okay, so it's a more basic 
problem.. I'm not sure why pdflatex can't find the cfg file... have 
you run texhash recently? Maybe that'll help... hope someone here 
can point out why pdflatex doesn't work...

The permissions look fine actually.. are you able to run pdflatex on 
a regular .tex file and generate a pdf file? Secondly, do you have 
the pdfpages package? kpsewhich pdfpages.sty should tell you if 
it's installed. And thirdly, you may want to check the pdfnup script 
and see what the call to pdflatex does -- this is towards the end of 
the pdfnup file; though I'm guessing pdfnup is not the problem... 
hopefully one of tests will shed some light on what's going wrong..

export QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt3

(or wherever your qt lives) before the configure run should help. IIRC it
does not want to run tr but $QTDIR/bin/findtr, but some variables are empty
and so it does not find the correct program.

You need a new gcc compiler, which is made available as rpm by suse at their 
inofficial ../people/.. room on their ftp server. This version fixes some

I've found it useful to start by simply gathering related links - 
if nothing else, they're useful during writing about it and you quickly 
want to check something. 

Searching for docbook, this seems to be the place on the wiki for that:

Lucky you.

In any cae, you can work around this particular bug by repalcing this
line with 'return 0;' or similar. LyX won't notice as it doesn't use
this particular function IIRC.

There is no such thing like an french ui: the bynary internationalization
files like
../share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/lyx.mo
built at lyx configure time from lyx-fr.po file knows
about the french translation of default.ui, layouts, ...

If lyx is built --without-nls, this won't work however.
Idem if gettext is not installed I guess.

You may check the existence of the .mo files, and perhaps review your
installation procedure.

If you really want to look at the ui-files from different versions of lyx, 
take a look at the CVS webinterface:
http://www.lyx.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/lyx-devel/lib/ui/
(you can chose the branch at the bottom in the window).

New feature poll?

I just read the lyx the latest LyX development news, and noted that 
there are great interface improvements in the pipeline: cutomisable 
toolbars (I am looking forward to insert floats from the toolbar!), more 
structured menus, and new icons. When will lyx-1.3.4 (or 1.4.0) arrive?
Gui improvents are good, but I am also interested in new latex 
functionality being covered by the lyx gui. I am wondering whether it 
would be a good idea to have a poll about what lyx users would like to 
be added to lyx. I think the opinions of the developers on a poll are 
especially important since they are the people who have to implement 
functionality suggested by the users.
So in short: what do we think about a new-features-poll?

Alain, LyX's user interface is fully translated into french.

$ make
$ su
$ make install
$ exit

The translation uses gnu gettext. See the files in the po directory.

Installing lyx should result in these translation files being 
installed in /usr/local/share/locale. Eg, here I have: 
/usr/local/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/lyx-1.3.4cvs.mo

(because I configured lyx as 
./configure --with-version-suffix=-1.3.4cvs
)

I believe that there is a configure option to install only certain 
languages (rather than all of them).

To turn on the french translation:
$ echo $LANG
C
$ LANG=fr_FR
$ export LANG
$ echo $LANG
fr_FR
$ lyx-1.3.4cvs

I don't know, whether this is much of a help - it's rather an idea.  
Under Mac OS 10.3.2 I manually had to set the language in a file. Check

compiling exported tex file by hand

I have a question concerning the compilation by hand of a tex file exported 
from lyx. I have an article that I wrote in lyx and now I want to check 
that/how it can be compiled directly, without lyx.

What happens is I export to latex, then I run latex on the file just like

French is one of the few languages that have a complete translation
(even of the docs).

I guess you need to give us more details about what you are doing.

What version of LyX are you using? Are you under windows?

You must run
bibtex APLmanuscript_Cabuz.tex
latex APLmanuscript_Cabuz.tex

 (LyX does it for you)

You must first build the psfile
dvips -o APLmanuscript_Cabuz.ps APLmanuscript_Cabuz.dvi
or open directly with

AFAIK you can create an icon to insert floats now... but please start a

I'm writting a lyx document and I want to include some
figures & text from a .pdf document, but not the whole
.pdf. How can I break up my .pdf file into smaller
pieces (ideally I'd like to save each page of the .pdf
as it's own separate file). 

Does any lyx user know of a tool I could use to do
this. 
I've tested several pdf-tools and the best was Adobe Acrobat. I know 
that it is commercial software but also available for Unix/Linux.
With Acrobat you can save all pages as extra pdf. You can also copy 
tables, pictures or text of an existing pdf and export them as a new pdf 
or picture(jpeg, gif). Moreover you will be able to trim single-page 
pdfs to get the right size.

Those instructions (changing ~/.MacOSX/preferences.plist) are a MacOSX
only configuration.  Because LyX/Mac starts as a direct GUI
application, the environment variable needs to be set independent of
shells.  For X11 systems under Linux or Unix, it is probably
sufficient to set and export LANG in the shell.

Is it? That it is the news -- so far the only variant was Acrobat 
Reader, which is not capable of doing all this stuff. And even 
Reader is not in sync with Win/Mac versions (IIRC, I gave up on 
it and using only kghostview/xpdf and eagerly waiting on kpdf).
Oops. You are right, all the things I described are only possible with 
Acrobat Standard or Professional.
And it's astonishing that it's not available for Linux but for MacOS.

  I have looked at Herbert's "Tips and Tricks" site without finding an
answer to my question.

  How can I remove the chapter number for the Preface and begin chapter
numbering at '1' with the following chapter?

I guess you still need to use the starred version (\chapter*)
to remove numbering.
The \frontmatter allows to feedback the contents of the chapter title to
the toc without ERT (a question which must be in the top 10 of
the list :-)

Jean-Pierre,

  That's almost too simple. :-)

  I changed the type to \chapter*, then added ERT to:
\addcontentsline{toc}{chapter}{Preface}
\pagenumbering{roman}
\setcounter{page}{1}

placed at the beginning of the preface text. It all works just fine with the
Springer-Verlag monograph style.

I found pdftex.cfg.   It is there under  
/usr/local/share/texmf/pdftex/config/pdftex.cfg

Perhaps I've revealed my ignorance there and running
pdflatex on the .pdf did not make sense.I wasn't
really sure what I was doing, but since
\usepackage{pdfpages} wasn't working for me from
within LyX, I decided to try pdfnup on the command
line.

When I ran the pdfnup script on my .pdf, it also
failed.   When I checked the log file generated, I saw
that it failed at the step pdflatex.   So (not really
comprehending everything that was going on in pdfnup
script) I decided to run pdflatex on my .pdf file to
see what would happen from the command line.Like I
said, maybe that makes no sense, but that was my
thinking there.

This is what pdfnup gives me
 
pdf_nup> ./pdfnup temppdffile.pdf 
This is pdfnup version 0.8
Temporary LaTeX file for this job is
/u/reyes/tmp/-.tex
Calling pdflatex...
