If you use the \sloppy command (in ERT or preamble?), LaTeX is not so fuzzy
about inter word spacing and a lot less hypenathion occures.

Besides this, putting the hyphenation hints into a separate *.tex file and
\input it would be my choice (as Jürgen already suggested).

This is TeX default behaviour, top alignment means the baseline of the first
line is aligned (which is what you usually want with text lines and
mathematical formula. (The same happens to minipages side-by-side, this is

Unfortunately not really. I once had the problem and did a terrible hack with
invisible rectangles (\raisebox). It works at the end, but you need to
know|define the hight of the graphic and insert it in a ERT command and do a
lot of fine-tuning...
 
 What you are looking for is Vertical alignment which is (a bit 
 contra-intuitively) in the group with Column Width. It is grayed-out by 
 default. 
 If you specify width of your columns (e.g. 50 col%), you can select vertical 
 alignment.
 
 Does it help?

LyX Win32 installation problem

Hi.. I was trying to help a friend install Ruurd's win32 version on 
windows. Everything seemed to have gone fine but the configure 
script doesn't seem to be able to find the converters for latex to 
dvi, latex to pdf, ps to pdf etc. We installed MikTeX just before 
installing LyX and I verified that these converters were present. So 
right now the View menu is empty, and so is the export menu in LyX. 
Any ideas on what might be wrong and what I need to do? I don't have 
much experience w/ LyX on Windows so would appreciate any help... 
incidentally, I installed this version on my Windows machine a few 
weeks back and everything went fine. I followed the exact same 
procedure this time too.. only difference I can think of is that 
this friend's machine had some previous version of MikTeX installed, 
which we deleted before installing the latest version...

problems with accents (II)

Dear All:
it seems to me that there are some serious problems with accents in 
LyX. At least with the aqua version for mac that I have

1) Yesterday I reported that I cannot input characters with accent from 
an us keyboard. optionaccent vowel-key simply does not seem to 
work. For example, option` a produces à on any mac applications, 
but nothink on LyX. a` does produce à, but I did not find any way 
to get é: e' simply gives e'

2) The interaction with LaTex seems to be even weirder. Stte the two 
attached latex files. The first was generated by hands and it does not 
display correctly on LyX: the accents are displayed in an empty line, 
followed by a line with unaccented text. The second file, instead, is 
produced by LyX. It contains the only accents that I have been able to 
produce (grave) inputing a`  e` i`. The Latex resultin output is 
obviously wrong.

Is this a problem of LyX, of LyX-for-aqua, or of my own configuration?
I am not sure that this is the right place to address one's own wishes, 
but a useful feature which is missing in LyX is the possibility of 
exporting a latex file with a name different from the current file name 
(one is not prompted for a filename to give to the exported file).

Actually, I think it *is* a matter of the amount of text. The page above

Do you have some router/gateway at home that might be involved in this? As 
I've said before, I've had this problem intermittently and I have a DI-714 
(I think). Or maybe it's some router/gateway in your network path?

 Using a browser on a remote system did work.  I have no idea why, of course.

This seems to be a problem that only happens when you:
* Do the save from some network (unknown what the characteristics are)
* The page contains more text than some unknown limit

Maybe there is something in the network path that doesn't like posting 
data over a certain size?

If you want to use it for quotes, then take a look at LayoutDocument,
in the Language category. Then you can select the type of quotes that
you want to use.

Ohterwise, one can always type french quotes with the compose key:
compose++.

You need to use layout-character, AFAIK.
My solution for speeding this up, is to leave the layout-character
dialog open (never hit the ok button) In the dialog, typewriter
is selected all the time.  Then I write everything
in roman, and select stuff I want in typewriter and hit apply
so it changes to typewriter without removing the dialog.
Don't let the main lyx window take up the entire screen, leave enough
room to see the layout-character dialog at the same time.
This way I never have to make changes in the dialog, just mark
and hit apply as needed.  It is reasonably fast, although marking
up with emphasize (ctrl+e) is faster.  If this is the _only_ markup
you do - and you do lots of it - consider using emphasize instead
and use tex to redefine \emph to invoke the typewriter font.

 Ok after a full night of head scratching  hitting
wall, i discovered what produced this nasty phenomena:

 when i pasted in a editor the .lyx snippet from the
german .lyx file, the editor automatically changed the
_fileencoding_ of the file from latin1 to utf-8. So
the files looked _exactly_ the same on vi, but
different on mozilla and lyx.

 Watch out! this is rather annoying and can make you
feel obnoxious and ready to throw the computer out of
the window

embedding all fonts into .pdf

ICIP 2004 paper upload system requires that _all_ fonts are embedded into
the pdf file (also the 13 standard ones). The tools (pdflatex/ghostscript)
refused initially to do this, and I thought someone would like to hear my
solution or suggest better one. I'm running Debian Stable 3.0.

First, I updated teTeX into version 2 and AFPL Ghostscript into version 8.
Then I replaced file
/etc/texmf/updmap.d/00updmap.cfg
with the new version given in
http://great-white.csee.usf.edu/latex.html
and running update-updmap (the last command is Debian-specific).

This produced embedded fonts from the lyx/tex document, but I had .eps
figures (created with Xfig and gnuplot) that I converted into .pdf with
epstopdf which uses Ghostscript to do the job and the figures still used
non-embedded fonts. My solution was to modify file
/usr/share/gs-afpl/8.14/lib/gs_pdfwr.ps
and change lines

This change looks quite ugly to me, but everything else (specifically using
-dEmbedAllFonts=true) failed. If someone has better solution, let me know.

pdffonts which comes with xpdf proved to be useful. After the above
changes, it showed that all fonts were embedded:

You have to make clear where the command ends, that is, either write
\oe{}uvre or \oe uvre (TeX interprets the space as end of command).

batch page composition feature request

I think I alluded to this a long while ago, but never followed up.
Anyway, here's a feature request --- perhaps the ERT inset could 
instead be a little pop-up menu populated w/ the number of lines one 
could gain / lose and the initial value being a comment w/ the number 
of lines? Say something like:

initial menu:
[0 (+/-0)] (for a paragraph which can't gain / lose)
[0 ( +1/-0] (for a paragraph which can gain one line, but not lose any)
[0 (+2/-1] (for a paragraph which can gain two or lose one)
and when popped up, the last one would look like:
[+2]
[+1]
[0 (+2/-1)]
[-1]
Anyway, here's a post I just made to a thread on comp.text.tex about 
this sort of thing.

could evaluate a paragraph and note how many lines it could gain or 
lose and stick that into the output (say as a .pdf annotation). Better 
still would be if LyX (say) could grab that and add it as an ERT (Evil 
Red Text --- raw (La)TeX code) comment above each paragraph.

It was funny, a while back I posted all that I'd learned of page makeup 
to the TYPO-L list asking, ``Is there nothing more? Is this all there 
is to know / do?'' and didn't get a single reply or comment. Later 
correspondence revealed a number of people had printed out my post, and 
used it as a guideline in their composition, or when outsourcing

Four things to consider:
1.  If the user has any other versions of latex installed, make sure 
that they are either deleted, renamed, or appear after MiKTeX on the 
system path.  (I had one machine where the configure script choked on an 
old latex.exe that was part of a Cygwin installation.)

2:  Does Edit | Reconfigure by any chance write a 0 byte textclass.lst 
file?  If so, it's likely to be due to having the wrong version of 
sed.exe.  Ruurd's port ships with sed 3.02; download the GnuWin32 port 
of sed (4.0.7 or later) from SourceForge 
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/gnuwin32/).

3: Make sure that the two files LaTeXConfig.lyx.in and LyXConfig.lyx.in 
exist in the .../share/lyx/doc folder.  They were missing from my last 
download of Ruurd's port.

4: Someone reported on the list that Edit-Reconfigure fails if LyX and 
the user's home directory are on different drives.

So you think the text quantity issue is tied to a specific server (as 
opposed to a specific client, or client configuration, or failure to 
make an appropriate propitiation to the gods before clicking save)?

You're right.  Deleting paragraph 5 did not do the job, but deleting 4 
and 5 let me save it.

I do this from my office (Ethernet to OC3 (?) link to regional net).  I

firewall, without restarting the browser) and the edit went through 
(!?).  Then I tried another edit, and it failed, but I got no new ICMP 
packets from tott.linpro.no.  And then another attempt succeeded.

If you can find any useful diagnostic information in all that, more 
power to you!

The firewall could be a common denominator... my router at home has a

I think the wiki server is in Norway and here's a funny thing:

wiki.lyx.org is an alias for aussie.lyx.org.
aussie.lyx.org has address 80.232.38.164
tott.linpro.no has address 80.232.38.218

so these two machines are very close... this seems significant since I
don't remember encountering this problem on other wiki servers.

This reminds me of something else that I've noticed... the first time I 
want to upload a file, I have to click on the upload button twice (nothing 
happens after the first click, just as if a request has been sent but

Changing Figure Directory in Document

  I have realized that keeping all the figures for my book in the main
directory results in clutter. So I created a subdirectory, figures/ and
moved all the figures there. When I went to the raw .lyx file to change the
pointers from one directory to the other, I could not find anything
directory specific.

  How do I tell the application that figures are now in a different
location? More specifically, can I do this in batch mode or must I open each
one and recreate the link?

The first time I tried to load the page, it was illegible.  The second 
time, I think I got more or less legible content in the middle, but the 
left-margin menus were shifted up too high, so that the first few links 
overlapped other content and in fact some may have been off the top of 
the page.  (Might be a good idea if someone else blessed with an old 
browser could confirm that.)

Try the attached script. run it as
$ sh rename.sh your_directory/*.lyx

It'll show you a diff of what it's changed and then prompt you before
overwriting the .lyx file.

  Many thanks! I was trying to do a search-and-replace using emacs on the
.lyx file but didn't see any directory name that needed modifying. So now I
understand that the directory from which the figures were originally were
loaded is encoded somewhere invisible, but prepending the new subdirectory
keeps everyone happy.

If you store the images paths as relative to the document directory, (as
here), then everything is much more flexible. You *can* save them as
absolute paths, but why would you?

  No reason at all. But, after adding a new figure (from the newly-added
subdirectory) and viewing the compiled output, only the latest figure is
found. :-( I closed the document and reopened it to see if that was
required, but it made no difference. I'll try shutting down lyx and
restarting it before going through the entire book and re-inserting each
figure.

  Have I missed something simple?

Same configuration, same code, but one failed to compile.

I have a strange problems. I wrote 2 different books with the same lyx version 
(1.3.2) and conffiguration. The first one has been successfully compiled. The 
other failed.

The last book, at first, i compiled successfully. However, when i add this tex

If you use the \sloppy command (in ERT or preamble?), LaTeX is not so fuzzy
about inter word spacing and a lot less hypenathion occures.

Besides this, putting the hyphenation hints into a separate *.tex file and
\input it would be my choice (as Jürgen already suggested).

This is TeX default behaviour, top alignment means the baseline of the first

Unfortunately not really. I once had the problem and did a terrible hack with
invisible rectangles (\raisebox). It works at the end, but you need to
know|define the hight of the graphic and insert it in a ERT command and do a
lot of fine-tuning...
 
 What you are looking for is Vertical alignment which is (a bit 
 contra-intuitively) in the group with Column Width. It is grayed-out by 
 default. 
 If you specify width of your columns (e.g. 50 col%), you can select vertical 
 alignment.
 
 Does it help?

I doubt it, but it might be worth to try...

LyX Win32 installation problem

Hi.. I was trying to help a friend install Ruurd's win32 version on 
windows. Everything seemed to have gone fine but the configure 
script doesn't seem to be able to find the converters for latex to 
dvi, latex to pdf, ps to pdf etc. We installed MikTeX just before 
installing LyX and I verified that these converters were present. So 
right now the View menu is empty, and so is the export menu in LyX. 
Any ideas on what might be wrong and what I need to do? I don't have 
much experience w/ LyX on Windows so would appreciate any help... 
incidentally, I installed this version on my Windows machine a few 
weeks back and everything went fine. I followed the exact same 
procedure this time too.. only difference I can think of is that 
this friend's machine had some previous version of MikTeX installed, 
which we deleted before installing the latest version...

problems with accents (II)

Dear All:
it seems to me that there are some serious problems with accents in 
LyX. At least with the aqua version for mac that I have

1) Yesterday I reported that I cannot input characters with accent from 
an us keyboard. optionaccent vowel-key simply does not seem to 
work. For example, option` a produces à on any mac applications, 
but nothink on LyX. a` does produce à, but I did not find any way 
to get é: e' simply gives e'

2) The interaction with LaTex seems to be even weirder. Stte the two 
attached latex files. The first was generated by hands and it does not 
display correctly on LyX: the accents are displayed in an empty line, 
followed by a line with unaccented text. The second file, instead, is 
produced by LyX. It contains the only accents that I have been able to 
produce (grave) inputing a`  e` i`. The Latex resultin output is 
obviously wrong.

Is this a problem of LyX, of LyX-for-aqua, or of my own configuration?
I am not sure that this is the right place to address one's own wishes, 
but a useful feature which is missing in LyX is the possibility of 
exporting a latex file with a name different from the current file name 
(one is not prompted for a filename to give to the exported file).

You need to use layout-character, AFAIK.
My solution for speeding this up, is to leave the layout-character
dialog open (never hit the ok button) In the dialog, typewriter
is selected all the time.  Then I write everything
in roman, and select stuff I want in typewriter and hit apply
so it changes to typewriter without removing the dialog.
Don't let the main lyx window take up the entire screen, leave enough
room to see the layout-character dialog at the same time.
This way I never have to make changes in the dialog, just mark
and hit apply as needed.  It is reasonably fast, although marking
up with emphasize (ctrl+e) is faster.  If this is the _only_ markup
you do - and you do lots of it - consider using emphasize instead
and use tex to redefine \emph to invoke the typewriter font.

 Ok after a full night of head scratching  hitting
wall, i discovered what produced this nasty phenomena:

 when i pasted in a editor the .lyx snippet from the
german .lyx file, the editor automatically changed the
_fileencoding_ of the file from latin1 to utf-8. So
the files looked _exactly_ the same on vi, but
different on mozilla and lyx.

 Watch out! this is rather annoying and can make you
feel obnoxious and ready to throw the computer out of
the window

embedding all fonts into .pdf

ICIP 2004 paper upload system requires that _all_ fonts are embedded into
the pdf file (also the 13 standard ones). The tools (pdflatex/ghostscript)
refused initially to do this, and I thought someone would like to hear my
solution or suggest better one. I'm running Debian Stable 3.0.

First, I updated teTeX into version 2 and AFPL Ghostscript into version 8.
Then I replaced file
/etc/texmf/updmap.d/00updmap.cfg
with the new version given in
http://great-white.csee.usf.edu/latex.html
and running update-updmap (the last command is Debian-specific).

This produced embedded fonts from the lyx/tex document, but I had .eps
figures (created with Xfig and gnuplot) that I converted into .pdf with
epstopdf which uses Ghostscript to do the job and the figures still used
non-embedded fonts. My solution was to modify file
/usr/share/gs-afpl/8.14/lib/gs_pdfwr.ps
and change lines

This change looks quite ugly to me, but everything else (specifically using
-dEmbedAllFonts=true) failed. If someone has better solution, let me know.

pdffonts which comes with xpdf proved to be useful. After the above
changes, it showed that all fonts were embedded:

You have to make clear where the command ends, that is, either write
\oe{}uvre or \oe uvre (TeX interprets the space as end of command).

batch page composition feature request

I think I alluded to this a long while ago, but never followed up.
Anyway, here's a feature request --- perhaps the ERT inset could 
instead be a little pop-up menu populated w/ the number of lines one 
could gain / lose and the initial value being a comment w/ the number 
of lines? Say something like:

initial menu:
[0 (+/-0)] (for a paragraph which can't gain / lose)
[0 ( +1/-0] (for a paragraph which can gain one line, but not lose any)
[0 (+2/-1] (for a paragraph which can gain two or lose one)
and when popped up, the last one would look like:
[+2]
[+1]
[0 (+2/-1)]
[-1]
Anyway, here's a post I just made to a thread on comp.text.tex about 
this sort of thing.

Find a page w/ a widow or orphan line, look back through the pages, 
find a paragraph which _might_ be amenable to gaining or losing a line, 
add \looseness+/-1% before it and re-tex and see.

As I've noted in the past, I'd dearly love a mechanism whereby TeX 
could evaluate a paragraph and note how many lines it could gain or 
lose and stick that into the output (say as a .pdf annotation). Better 
still would be if LyX (say) could grab that and add it as an ERT (Evil 
Red Text --- raw (La)TeX code) comment above each paragraph.

It was funny, a while back I posted all that I'd learned of page makeup 
to the TYPO-L list asking, ``Is there nothing more? Is this all there 
is to know / do?'' and didn't get a single reply or comment. Later 
correspondence revealed a number of people had printed out my post, and 
used it as a guideline in their composition, or when outsourcing

Four things to consider:
1.  If the user has any other versions of latex installed, make sure 
that they are either deleted, renamed, or appear after MiKTeX on the 
system path.  (I had one machine where the configure script choked on an 
old latex.exe that was part of a Cygwin installation.)

2:  Does Edit | Reconfigure by any chance write a 0 byte textclass.lst 
file?  If so, it's likely to be due to having the wrong version of 
sed.exe.  Ruurd's port ships with sed 3.02; download the GnuWin32 port 
of sed (4.0.7 or later) from SourceForge 
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/gnuwin32/).

3: Make sure that the two files LaTeXConfig.lyx.in and LyXConfig.lyx.in 
exist in the .../share/lyx/doc folder.  They were missing from my last 
download of Ruurd's port.

4: Someone reported on the list that Edit-Reconfigure fails if LyX and 
the user's home directory are on different drives.

You're right.  Deleting paragraph 5 did not do the job, but deleting 4 
and 5 let me save it.

Do you have some router/gateway at home that might be involved in this? As 
I've said before, I've had this problem intermittently and I have a DI-714 
(I think). Or maybe it's some router/gateway in your network path?
I do this from my office (Ethernet to OC3 (?) link to regional net).  I 
have a personal firewall on my office PC, and there are allegedly 
firewalls in place between my building and our campus and between our 
campus and Out There.  However, the building firewall (allegedly) only 
filters inbound traffic, and I believe the same holds for the campus 
firewall.  So the edited page should be reaching the server.

Using a browser on a remote system did work.  I have no idea why, of course.

This seems to be a problem that only happens when you:
* Do the save from some network (unknown what the characteristics are)
* The page contains more text than some unknown limit
Maybe there is something in the network path that doesn't like posting 
data over a certain size?
Highly unlikely in my case.  The server I used for a successful remote 
post is on the same network segment as my office PC, so the successful 
and unsucessful traffic should have followed pretty much identical 
routes.  The server has a static IP and my PC gets its IP address by 
DHCP, but that seems unlikely to explain the difference.

from my office (same segment).  One was Win 98, the other Win XP (same 
as my office), so the OS is not the differentiator.  (Incidentally, FYI, 
the Wiki pages do not display correctly on Netscape 4.76, perhaps 
indicating a problem with CSS support in an older browser.)

momentarily (scary thing to do here), and an edit went through just 
fine.  Stranger still, I then turned the firewall back on, and I can 
still edit the test page.

I can't find anything in the firewall log with respect to traffic 
to/from wiki.lyx.org.  However, there is an entry with a similar IP 
address (maps to tott.linpro.no).  It's about the right time frame for 
one of my unsuccessful edit attempts (prior to turning the firewall 
off), and it indicates that the firewall blocked 19 ICMP Type 3 
(Destination Unreachable) packets from tott.linpro.no, apparently in 
response to traffic I sent.

Ok, this is getting a bit stochastic.  I closed the browser and 
restarted it, then (with the firewall on) edited the LotsOfText page and 
tried to save.  The browser hung, and the firewall reported a bunch of 
ICMP 3 packets from tott.linpro.no.  Fine.  I then ran netstat to check 
network connections, tried another edit (without shutting down the 
firewall, without restarting the browser) and the edit went through 
(!?).  Then I tried another edit, and it failed, but I got no new ICMP 
packets from tott.linpro.no.  And then another attempt succeeded.

If you can find any useful diagnostic information in all that, more 
power to you!

I don't know what I think - the last time I actually tried to get a handle
on this problem nothing made sense really...

So we know this problem only occurs if the size is above a certain limit.

The firewall could be a common denominator... my router at home has a 
built in gateway. Actually, I wonder if the problem disappeared when I

I think the wiki server is in Norway and here's a funny thing:

wiki.lyx.org is an alias for aussie.lyx.org.
aussie.lyx.org has address 80.232.38.164
tott.linpro.no has address 80.232.38.218

so these two machines are very close... this seems significant since I
don't remember encountering this problem on other wiki servers.

This reminds me of something else that I've noticed... the first time I 
want to upload a file, I have to click on the upload button twice (nothing 
happens after the first click, just as if a request has been sent but 
there's no response).

I'll bring this up on the devel list to see if tott.linpro.no is known.

Changing Figure Directory in Document

  I have realized that keeping all the figures for my book in the main
directory results in clutter. So I created a subdirectory, figures/ and
moved all the figures there. When I went to the raw .lyx file to change the
pointers from one directory to the other, I could not find anything
directory specific.

  How do I tell the application that figures are now in a different
location? More specifically, can I do this in batch mode or must I open each
one and recreate the link?

The first time I tried to load the page, it was illegible.  The second 
time, I think I got more or less legible content in the middle, but the 
left-margin menus were shifted up too high, so that the first few links 
overlapped other content and in fact some may have been off the top of 
the page.  (Might be a good idea if someone else blessed with an old 
browser could confirm that.)

Try the attached script. run it as
$ sh rename.sh your_directory/*.lyx

It'll show you a diff of what it's changed and then prompt you before
overwriting the .lyx file.

  Many thanks! I was trying to do a search-and-replace using emacs on the
.lyx file but didn't see any directory name that needed modifying. So now I
understand that the directory from which the figures were originally were
loaded is encoded somewhere invisible, but prepending the new subdirectory
keeps everyone happy.

If you store the images paths as relative to the document directory, (as
here), then everything is much more flexible. You *can* save them as
absolute paths, but why would you?

Angus,

  No reason at all. But, after adding a new figure (from the newly-added
subdirectory) and viewing the compiled output, only the latest figure is
found. :-( I closed the document and reopened it to see if that was
required, but it made no difference. I'll try shutting down lyx and
restarting it before going through the entire book and re-inserting each
figure.

  Have I missed something simple?

  As it turns out, no. But, the shell script did. It did not write the
changes to the file. So, I just did that with a text editor and I'm back to
being a delighted camper with LyX. What a super, high-productivity tool this

Same configuration, same code, but one failed to compile.

I have a strange problems. I wrote 2 different books with the same lyx version 
(1.3.2) and conffiguration. The first one has been successfully compiled. The 
other failed.

The last book, at first, i compiled successfully. However, when i add this tex 
code:

The odd is, if i can compile the first book normally, (with the same 
configuration and same tex code addition), why i couldn't do the same with 
the last one?

Did i misconfigured? I brought you guys my lyx preferences and both lyx files 
of the books. Hope that helps you find the trouble.

If you use the \sloppy command (in ERT or preamble?), LaTeX is not so fuzzy
about inter word spacing and a lot less hypenathion occures.

Besides this, putting the hyphenation hints into a separate *.tex file and
\input it would be my choice (as Jürgen already suggested).

This is TeX default behaviour, top alignment means the baseline of the first
line is aligned (which is what you usually want with text lines and
mathematical formula. (The same happens to minipages side-by-side, this is
why aligning the top of figures-side-by-side in a float is difficult.)

Unfortunately not really. I once had the problem and did a terrible hack with
invisible rectangles (\raisebox). It works at the end, but you need to
know|define the hight of the graphic and insert it in a ERT command and do a
lot of fine-tuning...

LyX Win32 installation problem

Hi.. I was trying to help a friend install Ruurd's win32 version on 
windows. Everything seemed to have gone fine but the configure 
script doesn't seem to be able to find the converters for latex to 
dvi, latex to pdf, ps to pdf etc. We installed MikTeX just before 
installing LyX and I verified that these converters were present. So 
right now the View menu is empty, and so is the export menu in LyX. 
Any ideas on what might be wrong and what I need to do? I don't have 
much experience w/ LyX on Windows so would appreciate any help... 
incidentally, I installed this version on my Windows machine a few 
weeks back and everything went fine. I followed the exact same 
procedure this time too.. only difference I can think of is that 
this friend's machine had some previous version of MikTeX installed, 
which we deleted before installing the latest version...

problems with accents (II)

Dear All:
it seems to me that there are some serious problems with accents in 
LyX. At least with the aqua version for mac that I have

1) Yesterday I reported that I cannot input characters with accent from 
an us keyboard. " " simply does not seem to 
work. For example, "` a" produces "à" on any mac applications, 
but nothink on LyX. "a`" does produce "à", but I did not find any way 
to get "é": "e'" simply gives "e'"

2) The interaction with LaTex seems to be even weirder. Stte the two 
attached latex files. The first was generated by hands and it does not 
display correctly on LyX: the accents are displayed in an empty line, 
followed by a line with unaccented text. The second file, instead, is 
produced by LyX. It contains the only accents that I have been able to 
produce ("grave") inputing "a`  e` i`". The Latex resultin output is 
obviously wrong.

Is this a problem of LyX, of LyX-for-aqua, or of my own configuration?
I am not sure that this is the right place to address one's own wishes, 
but a useful feature which is missing in LyX is the possibility of 
exporting a latex file with a name different from the current file name 
(one is not prompted for a filename to give to the exported file).

Actually, I think it *is* a matter of the amount of text. The page above 
was on a different server. Here's a link to another page on the lyx wiki

Just for fun, try and remove more and more text from this page and 
suddenly you should be able to save it -- not that this is any practical

Do you have some router/gateway at home that might be involved in this? As 
I've said before, I've had this problem intermittently and I have a DI-714 
(I think). Or maybe it's some router/gateway in your network path?

This seems to be a problem that only happens when you:
* Do the save from some network (unknown what the characteristics are)
* The page contains more text than some unknown limit

Maybe there is something in the network path that doesn't like posting 
data over a certain size?

If you want to use it for quotes, then take a look at Layout>Document,
in the Language category. Then you can select the type of quotes that
you want to use.

Ohterwise, one can always type french quotes with the compose key:
compose+<+<.

You need to use layout->character, AFAIK.
My solution for speeding this up, is to leave the layout->character
dialog open (never hit the "ok" button) In the dialog, typewriter
is selected all the time.  Then I write everything
in roman, and select stuff I want in typewriter and hit "apply"
so it changes to typewriter without removing the dialog.
Don't let the main lyx window take up the entire screen, leave enough
room to see the layout->character dialog at the same time.
This way I never have to make changes in the dialog, just mark
and hit apply as needed.  It is reasonably fast, although marking
up with emphasize (ctrl+e) is faster.  If this is the _only_ markup
you do - and you do lots of it - consider using emphasize instead
and use tex to redefine \emph to invoke the typewriter font.

 Ok after a full night of head scratching & hitting
wall, i discovered what produced this nasty phenomena:

 when i pasted in a editor the .lyx snippet from the
german .lyx file, the editor automatically changed the
_fileencoding_ of the file from latin1 to utf-8. So
the files looked _exactly_ the same on vi, but
different on mozilla and lyx.

 Watch out! this is rather annoying and can make you
feel obnoxious and ready to throw the computer out of
the window

embedding all fonts into .pdf

ICIP 2004 paper upload system requires that _all_ fonts are embedded into
the pdf file (also the 13 standard ones). The tools (pdflatex/ghostscript)
refused initially to do this, and I thought someone would like to hear my
solution or suggest better one. I'm running Debian Stable 3.0.

First, I updated teTeX into version 2 and AFPL Ghostscript into version 8.
Then I replaced file
/etc/texmf/updmap.d/00updmap.cfg
with the new version given in
http://great-white.csee.usf.edu/latex.html
and running update-updmap (the last command is Debian-specific).

This produced embedded fonts from the lyx/tex document, but I had .eps
figures (created with Xfig and gnuplot) that I converted into .pdf with
epstopdf which uses Ghostscript to do the job and the figures still used
non-embedded fonts. My solution was to modify file
/usr/share/gs-afpl/8.14/lib/gs_pdfwr.ps
and change lines

You have to make clear where the command ends, that is, either write
\oe{}uvre or \oe uvre (TeX interprets the space as end of command).

batch page composition feature request

I think I alluded to this a long while ago, but never followed up.
Anyway, here's a feature request --- perhaps the ERT inset could 
instead be a little pop-up menu populated w/ the number of lines one 
could gain / lose and the initial value being a comment w/ the number 
of lines? Say something like:

initial menu:
[0 (+/-0)] (for a paragraph which can't gain / lose)
[0 ( +1/-0] (for a paragraph which can gain one line, but not lose any)
[0 (+2/-1] (for a paragraph which can gain two or lose one)
and when popped up, the last one would look like:
[+2]
[+1]
[0 (+2/-1)]
[-1]
Anyway, here's a post I just made to a thread on comp.text.tex about 
this sort of thing.

Well, that's the traditional way to fix it.
Find a page w/ a widow or orphan line, look back through the pages, 
find a paragraph which _might_ be amenable to gaining or losing a line, 
add \looseness+/-1% before it and re-tex and see.

As I've noted in the past, I'd dearly love a mechanism whereby TeX 
could evaluate a paragraph and note how many lines it could gain or 
lose and stick that into the output (say as a .pdf annotation). Better 
still would be if LyX (say) could grab that and add it as an ERT (Evil 
Red Text --- raw (La)TeX code) comment above each paragraph.

It was funny, a while back I posted all that I'd learned of page makeup 
to the TYPO-L list asking, ``Is there nothing more? Is this all there 
is to know / do?'' and didn't get a single reply or comment. Later 
correspondence revealed a number of people had printed out my post, and 
used it as a guideline in their composition, or when outsourcing

make sure that in Edit->Preferences->File Formats the viewer box has a path
to the viewer for each type (pdf,ps,dvi,ect.).

Four things to consider:
1.  If the user has any other versions of latex installed, make sure 
that they are either deleted, renamed, or appear after MiKTeX on the 
system path.  (I had one machine where the configure script choked on an 
old latex.exe that was part of a Cygwin installation.)

2:  Does Edit | Reconfigure by any chance write a 0 byte textclass.lst 
file?  If so, it's likely to be due to having the wrong version of 
sed.exe.  Ruurd's port ships with sed 3.02; download the GnuWin32 port 
of sed (4.0.7 or later) from SourceForge 
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/gnuwin32/).

3: Make sure that the two files LaTeXConfig.lyx.in and LyXConfig.lyx.in 
exist in the .../share/lyx/doc folder.  They were missing from my last 
download of Ruurd's port.

4: Someone reported on the list that Edit->Reconfigure fails if LyX and 
the user's home directory are on different drives.

If this is the problem try this version of configure.bat

You're right.  Deleting paragraph 5 did not do the job, but deleting 4 
and 5 let me save it.

Do you have some router/gateway at home that might be involved in this? As 
I've said before, I've had this problem intermittently and I have a DI-714 
(I think). Or maybe it's some router/gateway in your network path?
I do this from my office (Ethernet to OC3 (?) link to regional net).  I 
have a personal firewall on my office PC, and there are allegedly 
firewalls in place between my building and our campus and between our 
campus and Out There.  However, the building firewall (allegedly) only 
filters inbound traffic, and I believe the same holds for the campus 
firewall.  So the edited page should be reaching the server.

Using a browser on a remote system did work.  I have no idea why, of course.

This seems to be a problem that only happens when you:
* Do the save from some network (unknown what the characteristics are)
* The page contains more text than some unknown limit
Maybe there is something in the network path that doesn't like posting 
data over a certain size?

post is on the same network segment as my office PC, so the successful 
and unsucessful traffic should have followed pretty much identical 
routes.  The server has a static IP and my PC gets its IP address by 
DHCP, but that seems unlikely to explain the difference.

from my office (same segment).  One was Win 98, the other Win XP (same

indicating a problem with CSS support in an older browser.)

momentarily (scary thing to do here), and an edit went through just 
fine.  Stranger still, I then turned the firewall back on, and I can 
still edit the test page.

I can't find anything in the firewall log with respect to traffic 
to/from wiki.lyx.org.  However, there is an entry with a similar IP 
address (maps to tott.linpro.no).  It's about the right time frame for 
one of my unsuccessful edit attempts (prior to turning the firewall 
off), and it indicates that the firewall blocked 19 ICMP Type 3 
(Destination Unreachable) packets from tott.linpro.no, apparently in 
response to traffic I sent.

Ok, this is getting a bit stochastic.  I closed the browser and 
restarted it, then (with the firewall on) edited the LotsOfText page and 
tried to save.  The browser hung, and the firewall reported a bunch of 
ICMP 3 packets from tott.linpro.no.  Fine.  I then ran netstat to check 
network connections, tried another edit (without shutting down the 
firewall, without restarting the browser) and the edit went through 
(!?).  Then I tried another edit, and it failed, but I got no new ICMP 
packets from tott.linpro.no.  And then another attempt succeeded.

If you can find any useful diagnostic information in all that, more 
power to you!

I don't know what I think - the last time I actually tried to get a handle
on this problem nothing made sense really...

So we know this problem only occurs if the size is above a certain limit.

The firewall could be a common denominator... my router at home has a 
built in gateway. Actually, I wonder if the problem disappeared when I 
got a new router at home? If I have enough energy I'll see if I can plug 
the old router back in and see if I get problem again.

Ok, that's actually good since it means that the problem is "closer".

Probably... was it really bad? (Maybe it's enough if I write a note in 
the Site.FAQ that Netscape 4.76 is too old.)

allows you to edit, but why would it keep working???

I think the wiki server is in Norway and here's a funny thing:

wiki.lyx.org is an alias for aussie.lyx.org.
aussie.lyx.org has address 80.232.38.164
tott.linpro.no has address 80.232.38.218

so these two machines are very close... this seems significant since I
don't remember encountering this problem on other wiki servers.

This reminds me of something else that I've noticed... the first time I 
want to upload a file, I have to click on the upload button twice (nothing 
happens after the first click, just as if a request has been sent but 
there's no response).

I'll bring this up on the devel list to see if tott.linpro.no is known.

Changing Figure Directory in Document

  I have realized that keeping all the figures for my book in the main
directory results in clutter. So I created a subdirectory, figures/ and
moved all the figures there. When I went to the raw .lyx file to change the
pointers from one directory to the other, I could not find anything
directory specific.

  How do I tell the application that figures are now in a different
location? More specifically, can I do this in batch mode or must I open each
one and recreate the link?

The first time I tried to load the page, it was illegible.  The second 
time, I think I got more or less legible content in the middle, but the 
left-margin menus were shifted up too high, so that the first few links 
overlapped other content and in fact some may have been off the top of 
the page.  (Might be a good idea if someone else blessed with an old 
browser could confirm that.)

Try the attached script. run it as
$ sh rename.sh your_directory/*.lyx

It'll show you a diff of what it's changed and then prompt you before
overwriting the .lyx file.

  Many thanks! I was trying to do a search-and-replace using emacs on the
.lyx file but didn't see any directory name that needed modifying. So now I
understand that the directory from which the figures were originally were
loaded is encoded somewhere invisible, but prepending the new subdirectory
keeps everyone happy.

If you store the images paths as relative to the document directory, (as
here), then everything is much more flexible. You *can* save them as
absolute paths, but why would you?

Angus,

  No reason at all. But, after adding a new figure (from the newly-added
subdirectory) and viewing the compiled output, only the latest figure is
found. :-( I closed the document and reopened it to see if that was
required, but it made no difference. I'll try shutting down lyx and
restarting it before going through the entire book and re-inserting each
figure.

  Have I missed something simple?

  As it turns out, no. But, the shell script did. It did not write the
changes to the file. So, I just did that with a text editor and I'm back to
being a delighted camper with LyX. What a super, high-productivity tool this
is!

Same configuration, same code, but one failed to compile.

I have a strange problems. I wrote 2 different books with the same lyx version 
(1.3.2) and conffiguration. The first one has been successfully compiled. The 
other failed.

The last book, at first, i compiled successfully. However, when i add this tex

Did i misconfigured? I brought you guys my lyx preferences and both lyx files
