It seems (almost sure) that you need to install the latex-xft-fonts package. latex-xft-fonts package is already installed... Actually it's just the lyx interface that's messed up. When I export to ps, the characters show up no problem, it's just in the gui that they show up weird. Sorry I did not notice that before. It's been a while since I used lyx... Alex.

Setting things up for latex will get your new font into pdf and/or postscript output, as well as dvi previews. This won't get the font into lyx though. You can get fonts into lyx through edit-preferences. (Assuming you've made your font available for X) Note that lyx only uses three different fonts or the screen, so you have to replace one of those. You will probably want to replace the sans serif font, as that is the one normally used for headings in lyx. Helge Hafting

Hi Alex, I have i believe the same problem like you and the reason for that is only because i define in Layout - Document - Language - Hebrew. I believe you defined there French (I must say, that i can also see the symbol \Gamma with French definition). What had you define there? Please try do define there English and see if its works. only because i define in Layout - Document - Language - That's it. The language for this document had been inexplicably defined as Romanian. I changed that to Français (the default locale of my whole system) and now it works. It's true that I am Romanian, but I have never used Lyx to write any romanian documents... Strange. Alex.

cross-referencing equation in align environment
Dear all,
in one row in an align environment, I'd like to cross-reference an
equation which is already mentioned (and labeled) earlier in the text.
The equation should have the same number throughout. I'm used to apply
\tag{\ref{...}} to obtain the number I want for equations in display
mode but this doesn't work in an align environment.
How can I achieve this?

change tracking
I happily read that John Levon implemented a change tracking feature, soon to be included in LyX (in fact, one can even this already) I currently use the python script ldiff.py # Copyright (C) 2002 Dekel Tsur (I found it here: http://cs.haifa.ac.il/~dekelts/ldiff/) This also uses dvipost. I like it. The python script does some post processing to remove latex errors, but not all. The problem is (e.g.) when I use algorithms. The script doesn't know about \If, \Else, \EndIf, and so, I often end up in a situation where (e.g.) \EndIf occurse twice, both in blue text as well as in red text - resulting in LaTeX errors. I was wondering how the change tracking feature in LyX would deal with that problem. In general, what happens to changes in ERT? Or maybe it only puts a marginbar around the complete ERT? Secondly, a minor plus of the ldiff script, I think, is that it can compare the current version with some old cvs version (or even compare two old cvs versions). Would that be possible with Lyx' change tracking as well? Jonne.

But I can't find relevant document about its operation. # latex latex_test.tex This is TeX, Version 3.14159 (Web2C 7.4.5) (./latex_test.tex LaTeX2e 2001/06/01 Babel v3.7h and hyphenation patterns for american, french, german, ngerman, n ohyphenation, loaded. ) * It hung here. An empty latex_test.log file created $ man latex . mentioning that the primary source of documentation for LaTeX is the LaTeX manual referenced below, and the local guide in the file local-guide.tex or local.tex or some such. $ man local-guide.tex No manual entry for local-guide.tex $ locate local-guide.tex $ locate local.tex $ locate local-guide all no printout. Odd problems with spacing
I'm using the windows build of lyx 1.3.3 (old, I know. I'll move up to the more recent version when I get a chance) so the following little issues might not still be present in the current version. Alternatively, they may be something to do with MikTex which I'm using to generate PDFs. Anyhow. First, I find that the captions for figures seem to drift around from one figure to the next. I have a document (an installation guide) which contains a series of screenshots and find that the distance between the figure and its caption varies quite noticeably from one to the next, usually leaving a larger gap than I would like. If I fiddle with \captionskip in the preamble to try to correct this those which are closer to the figures end up too close, sometimes overlapping the figure. Is there any way I can get the captions nailed to the figures at a reliable distance? Second, also in this installation guide, I have an item in an itemize environment which contains a long file path shown in typewriter font. In order to fit this path on a single line without it spilling over the right margin I set its font size to 'smaller' (aka \footnotesize). For the path this is visually just about acceptable, but causes an odd side effect in that the other text in the item retains the normal font size but ends up with a reduced \baselineskip space between the lines leaving everything looking bunched up. I can of course fix this using a bit of ERT, but is this a known bug in lyx or miktex? guy

PICT conversion from LyX
At the moment I'm generating numerous PICT files on a Mac (that is the only format the software is capable of exporting), and I would like to get these into a LyX document on my Linux box. I can use the convert programme to convert from PICT to PNG format, but in the Converters tab of LyX preferences there is no where to specify what LyX will do with PICT files. Is it possible to add a new file format for LyX to automatically convert? (or is it easier to just continue doing this from the command line) (If it makes any difference I'm running Lyx 1.3.4) Ta, Paul

This font should be compatible, or able to me made compatible, with LaTeX, LyX and Linux. Any "adobe type 1" font or any "truetype" font can be made to work with latex+linux. So if you can't find a good free font, just buy one that looks right. If you pay a reasonable amount, make sure the font is reasonably good too. I.e. make sure it has all the glyphs you believe you need (letters, numbers, ligatures, symbols you might need.) The kerning should be good too on a commercial font. (Look at "AV", "To" and similar.) Make sure the font is made for the point size(s) you intend to use. Usually, a "font" really is a bundle of several similiar but not identical font files intended for different point sizes. This is not about resolution, but the fact that different aspect ratios and different relations between line thickness and font height is optimal for different font sizes. You don't have to research all this yourself, the font seller should be able to answer any such questions - if not, don't buy from them. Making a new font work with latex may take some work, it took me a couple of days not having done it before. There are nice howtos with lots of steps on the net. Setting things up for latex will get your new font into pdf and/or postscript output, as well as dvi previews. This won't get the font into lyx though. You can get fonts into lyx through edit->preferences. (Assuming you've made your font available for X) Note that lyx only uses three different fonts or the screen, so you have to replace one of those. You will probably want to replace the "sans serif" font, as that is the one normally used for headings in lyx. Helge Hafting

Hi Alex, I have i believe the same problem like you and the reason for that is only because i define in Layout -> Document -> Language -> Hebrew. I believe you defined there French (I must say, that i can also see the symbol \Gamma with French definition). What had you define there? Please try do define there English and see if its works. Its not a solution, but this information maybe could help other people to help you or to fix this bug in the future. Hannan

I changed that to Français (the default locale of my whole system) and now it works. It's true that I am Romanian, but I have never used Lyx to write any romanian documents... Strange. Alex.

cross-referencing equation in align environment
Dear all,
in one row in an align environment, I'd like to cross-reference an
equation which is already mentioned (and labeled) earlier in the text.
The equation should have the same number throughout. I'm used to apply
\tag{\ref{...}} to obtain the number I want for equations in display
mode but this doesn't work in an align environment.
How can I achieve this?

change tracking
I happily read that John Levon implemented a "change tracking" feature, soon to be included in LyX (in fact, one can even this already) I currently use the python script "ldiff.py" # Copyright (C) 2002 Dekel Tsur (I found it here: http://cs.haifa.ac.il/~dekelts/ldiff/) This also uses dvipost. I like it. The python script does some post processing to remove latex errors, but not all. The problem is (e.g.) when I use algorithms. The script doesn't know about \If, \Else, \EndIf, and so, I often end up in a situation where (e.g.) \EndIf occurse twice, both in "blue" text as well as in "red" text - resulting in LaTeX errors. I was wondering how the "change tracking" feature in LyX would deal with that problem. In general, what happens to changes in ERT? Or maybe it only puts a marginbar around the complete ERT? Secondly, a minor plus of the ldiff script, I think, is that it can compare the current version with some old cvs version (or even compare two old cvs versions). Would that be possible with Lyx' "change tracking" as well? Jonne.

But I can't find relevant document about its operation. # latex latex_test.tex This is TeX, Version 3.14159 (Web2C 7.4.5) (./latex_test.tex LaTeX2e <2001/06/01> Babel and hyphenation patterns for american, french, german, ngerman, n ohyphenation, loaded. ) * It hung here. An empty latex_test.log file created $ man latex . mentioning that the primary source of documentation for LaTeX is the LaTeX manual referenced below, and the local guide in the file local-guide.tex or local.tex or some such. $ man local-guide.tex No manual entry for local-guide.tex $ locate local-guide.tex $ locate local.tex $ locate local-guide all no printout. Odd problems with spacing
I'm using the windows build of lyx 1.3.3 (old, I know. I'll move up to the more recent version when I get a chance) so the following little issues might not still be present in the current version. Alternatively, they may be something to do with MikTex which I'm using to generate PDFs. Anyhow. First, I find that the captions for figures seem to drift around from one figure to the next. I have a document (an installation guide) which contains a series of screenshots and find that the distance between the figure and its caption varies quite noticeably from one to the next, usually leaving a larger gap than I would like. If I fiddle with \captionskip in the preamble to try to correct this those which are closer to the figures end up too close, sometimes overlapping the figure. Is there any way I can get the captions nailed to the figures at a reliable distance? Second, also in this installation guide, I have an item in an itemize environment which contains a long file path shown in typewriter font. In order to fit this path on a single line without it spilling over the right margin I set its font size to 'smaller' (aka \footnotesize). For the path this is visually just about acceptable, but causes an odd side effect in that the other text in the item retains the normal font size but ends up with a reduced \baselineskip space between the lines leaving everything looking bunched up. I can of course fix this using a bit of ERT, but is this a known bug in lyx or miktex? guy

I was about to upgrade a bunch of machines to FC3, but having to track a separate repo for the QT libraries is going to be one big PITA (these boxes have to pretty much run themselves, I don't have time to manually mess with them). PICT conversion from LyX
At the moment I'm generating numerous PICT files on a Mac (that is the only format the software is capable of exporting), and I would like to get these into a LyX document on my Linux box. I can use the "convert" programme to convert from PICT to PNG format, but in the "Converters" tab of LyX preferences there is no where to specify what LyX will do with PICT files. Is it possible to add a new file format for LyX to automatically convert? (or is it easier to just continue doing this from the command line) (If it makes any difference I'm running Lyx 1.3.4) Ta, Paul
