updating dvi's and using package

2005-02-07 Thread Jose Capco
Dear List,

Why doesn't my dvi update whenever I try to (I'm using
Ruurd's port). I need to always exit lyx and then open
lyx again and view the dvi by pressing control-d and I
see the updates.. something looks buggy here.

And could someone advise how I can use packages like

definitions, ... etc. appear in the available layouts.
Thanks in advance

Re: Viewing eps/pdf within LyXWin on Windows 2000

2005-02-07 Thread nburgan
Hi Uwe,

Thanks again for your reply. I'm still having a few problems. On the
weekend (using Image Magick version 6.1.9) I turned my computer on,
started LyX and everything worked fine - I could view .eps and .eps files
within LyX. I turned my computer off though and came back a few hours
later and it wasn't working again - very strange !

To try and fix the problem I tried a different version of Ghostscript. I
tried GNU Ghostscript 7.05 (this was recommended on the Image Magick
website). However now I can't get Image Magick to work properly. If I try
to view .eps or .pdf images using Image Magick's Display program I get an
error. I get the same error using covert from the command line;

C:\Documents\graphicsconvert eps:aulogo.eps ppm:test.ppm
convert.exe: no decode delegate for this image format `aulogo.eps'.
convert.exe: missing an image filename `ppm:test.ppm'.

Obviously I need to sort out Image Magick before worrying about LyX.

I tried to unintsall Image Magick (via Add/Remove programs) and reinstall
it several times but it didn't help. I also tried a slightly older version
of Image Magick but they are all giving me the same problem.

I think that maybe changing my Ghostscript version has messed Image Magick
up. Even when I uninstall Image Magick I can still find references to it
in the registry. I think that Image Magick may be trying to use the
version of Ghostscript that I no longer have installed.

I want to get rid of Image Magick (and possibly Ghostscript) completely so
that I can start afresh and install the versions which you are using
successfully together.

Any ideas ??

Maybe I will send a more general email to the list about Image Magick on
Windows 2000

Thanks again in advance

 - assure that the installation folder of LyX and all files and
subfolders have full permissions for everybody

 - assure that you don't use self defined convertes in the menu Edit -
Preferences. (There should be only nine converters defined.) The
converter EPS - PDF should use the command

 epstopdf --outfile=$$o $$i

If this doesn't help, I have no idea what is going wrong.

2005-02-07 Thread nburgan
Hello All,

I'm having some trouble with Image Magick on Windows 2000.

To be able to view .eps and .pdf within LyX I need to get Image Magick
working.

I was using Image Magick version 6.1.9
(ImageMagick-6.1.9-Q16-windows-dll.exe) and AFPL Ghostscript 8.50. After
some fiddling around I was able to view .eps/.pdf images withing LyX on
one occasion but I came back to my computer a few hours later, turned it
on again and I could no longer view .eps/.pdf within LyX. I thought there
might be a conflict between I.M. and Ghostscript so to try and fix the
problem I removed AFPL Ghostscript 8.50 and installed GNU Ghostscript7.05
(this version is recommended on the Image Magick website).

However now I'm having trouble with Image Magick. I can no longer view
.eps or .pdf files using Image Magick Display. I also get the same error
trying to use convert from the command line e.g.

C:\Documents\graphicsconvert eps:aulogo.eps ppm:test.ppm
convert.exe: no decode delegate for this image format `aulogo.eps'.
convert.exe: missing an image filename `ppm:test.ppm'.

I have uninstalled Image Magick (via Add/Remove programs) and tried to
reinstall it several times but I still get the same error. I have also
tried a slightly older version. When I have uninstalled Image Magick I can
still find references to it in the registry. I think Image Magick may be
trying to call the version of Ghostscript that I no longer have installed.

Does anyone have any tips on getting Image Magick working?

Or on how I can get rid of it (and possible Ghostscript) completely so
that I can install them afresh?

Thanks in advance

We have been down this road before... once I even created a sound file
to explain how I pronounced it. But people (esp. american) could not
hear the difference between my 'y' sound and 'ee'. :-)

(my 'y' sound is almost like 'ee' but a bit more closed and a bit

But I don't have the right to declare how LyX should be pronounced
anyway. Find something you are comfortable with and use that.

That's a different issue; windows cannot associate files w/o extension
(like lyx2lyx) to certain apps. You would have to run python on lyx2lyx
explicitly (from the command line). Then the other problem sets in and
you need a full python install... or maybe it doesn't for you? That
would be interesting.

lyx2lyx

2005-02-07 Thread Jose Capco
Dear List,

Ok I think I narrowed down the problem. The Ruurd's
installation needed (in order for the 1.4 version of
lyx2lyx to work)

zlib.pyd which is in the dll directory
and
something in the Lib directory (I just copied the
whole Lib of python directory into the lib of the
lyx/bin directory).

I couldn't figure out what exactly was missing (I
don't program in python), and I have spent half my day
on it already. I suggest Angus or someone from the
developers team to put up a zip file containing these
files if it's not much of trouble.

The lyx2lyx did the job... but my 1.3.5 lyx still
thinks that the lyx is a new one, and I don't think I
see much changes as compared to when I opened it
before lyx2lyxing.

Sincerely,

My first question is this -- is it just pdflatex, or is it any rendering
method? Second question -- does your table of contents agree with actual
content? Third question -- using your table of contents, can you discern
something that's been left out. Fourth question -- have your fonts or margins
changed?

If it's all rendering methods, the TOC agrees with the content, and nothing's
been left out, and your font/margins are unchanged, perhaps it's the
stoplight phenominon.

Here in Orlando, their response to every traffic problem is to add a new
stoplight. None are timed. If you catch a redlight, you often see the light
ahead of that one go green, and then red. Same at the next one. I've seen
cases where missing a redlight caused me to miss the next six. It was just
the wrong redlight at the wrong time.

If you think of every float as a redlight, maybe the tiny copyedit caused you
to miss a page, and everything cascaded. One would think the cascade would be
stopped at the first chapter boundary, but if you have several copy edits in
several chapters, it's conceivable that it could make the difference. In your
case I guess you hit a strategic greenlight :-)

The hypothesis in the preceding page could be tested by creating a copy of
the .lyx file, backing out your copy edits, and seeing if it went back up to
288.

Steve,
I've used only pdflatex each time with the shortcut of ctrl-h. Otherwise,
the only changes were a one-letter typo correction and adding a space
between paragraphs, all in the Preface. The file size went from 1,430,xxx to
1,404,xxx bytes.
Rats! Found it, thank you. The bibliograph is not being generated! After
submitting all the files I changed the directory name. So, the bibliography
could not be found (book.bib) because the path had changed.
I hadn't noticed this. I'm glad you got me looking at details again.

This happens to me when I open a LyX file by double-clicking the

file open command, nor if I open a command window in the directory
containing the document and start LyX with lyx document -userdir my
user directory.

I can identify the problem, but not the cure. If I open a file named
test.lyx, located in C:\dir1\dir2, either via the file open command or
from a command prompt, in the LyX temp directory the temporary files are
named test.tex, test.dvi etc. If I open the same file by double
clicking the icon, the temporary files are named _dir1_dir2_test.tex,
_dir1_dir2_test.dvi, etc. The path information embedded in the file
names seems to be throwing off LyX when it does a View-Update; I'm
guessing that it looks for test.dvi rather than _dir1_dir2_test.dvi.

The only work-around I can see is to avoid double-clicking file icons.

No, it works fine. Press Ctrl-d to open the dvi and the dvi-viewer. If
you changed your text, press Ctrl-d again for a new dvi-viewer window
with the actualized dvi, or better, press Ctrl-Shift-d to see the

(This doesn't always work if you change an image inside LyX if you meant
that.)

The package amsthm is preinstalled on every LaTeX-distribution, so take
a look at its documentation. To use package with LyX, use the command

\usepackage[options]{package-name}
in the preamble.
But as you can read in the official LaTeX-package catalogue:
ftp://ftp.dante.de/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/amsthm.html
amsthm is part of all AMS-classes like amsbook.
You only need this package, if you want to use its theorem-style in
other document classes.

...etc. and finally make my own layout

I don't understand you. You request for the theorem style of the
amsthm-package, but don't like its style. So don't use it, if you don't
like it.
Another possibility for own theorem styles is to use the package ntheorem.

LyX stopped working after computer upgrade

2005-02-07 Thread Stefano Franchi
H all,
I recently upgraded my system to a new PowerBook and had to reinstall
LyX, TeX and all the other packages I use, including Jurabib.
Unfortunately, I am no longer able to compile a file that gave me no
problems before. LyX chokes on every bibtex reference. For each
reference it gives me two errors of the following kind:

First error:
You can't use `\relax' after \the.
\bibitem{Wedin1997}
Second error:
Undefined control sequence.
 \bibitem{Wedin1997}
The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have
misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct
spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue,
and I'll forget about whatever was undefined.

LyX is capable of producing a pdf file --errors notwithstanding-- but
all the references are missing.
I tried to remove the references and the problems disappeared. But of
course I need them...

I suppose there must be some configuration problem, but haven't been
able to track it down yet.
I am using LyX/Mac-Qt with TeX installed with Fink. The bibliography is
managed by Jurabib.

Suggestions are most welcome...
Best,
Stefano

of Image Magick but they are all giving me the same problem.

Hmm I'm using these versions too, but without problems.

 - I can view the DVI, PDF(pdflatex)and Postscript outputs fine (but not
 the PDF (dvipdfm) output)

I can run convert from the command line (convert eps:c:\aulogo.eps
ppm:c:\test.ppm), and was able to convert the .eps image that LyX was
having trouble with to a .ppm

OK, the instalation seems to be fine.

Any more ideas on what might be wrong??

 - assure that the installation folder of LyX and all files and
subfolders have full permissions for everybody

 - assure that you don't use self defined convertes in the menu Edit -
Preferences. (There should be only nine converters defined.) The
converter EPS - PDF should use the command

 epstopdf --outfile=$$o $$i

If this doesn't help, I have no idea what is going wrong.

Re: Image Magick on Windows 2000

Sincerely,
Jose Capco

Adding Figure To Book Title Page

Shrinking Page Count

This happens to me when I open a LyX file by double-clicking the
document icon. It does not happen if I open the document using the LyX
file open command, nor if I open a command window in the directory
containing the document and start LyX with lyx document -userdir my
user directory.

If
you changed your text, press Ctrl-d again for a new dvi-viewer window
with the actualized dvi, or better, press Ctrl-Shift-d to see the
updated dvi in the same dvi-viewer window.
(This doesn't always work if you change an image inside LyX if you meant
that.)

And could someone advise how I can use packages like
amsthm
The package amsthm is preinstalled on every LaTeX-distribution, so take
a look at its documentation. To use package with LyX, use the command

\usepackage[options]{package-name}
in the preamble.
But as you can read in the official LaTeX-package catalogue:
ftp://ftp.dante.de/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/amsthm.html
amsthm is part of all AMS-classes like amsbook.
You only need this package, if you want to use its theorem-style in
other document classes.

...etc. and finally make my own layout
(document class). I just don't like the way theorems,
definitions, ... etc. appear in the available layouts.

\bibitem{Wedin1997}
Second error:
Undefined control sequence.
 \bibitem{Wedin1997}

Best,
Stefano

If I try
to view .eps or .pdf images using Image Magick's Display program I get an
error. I get the same error using covert from the command line;

C:\Documents\graphics>convert eps:aulogo.eps ppm:test.ppm
convert.exe: no decode delegate for this image format `aulogo.eps'.
convert.exe: missing an image filename `ppm:test.ppm'.

I want to get rid of Image Magick (and possibly Ghostscript) completely so
that I can start afresh and install the versions which you are using

hear the difference between my 'y' sound and 'ee'. :-)

(my 'y' sound is almost like 'ee' but a bit more closed and a bit
further back in the mouth...)

But I don't have the right to declare how LyX should be pronounced
anyway. Find something you are comfortable with and use that.

I have the same problem also. I import the latex file but it says lyx2lyx is
not recognized as a command and not operable. My path has included the path
to the python.exe that comes with lyx. Can someone please help and point me
in the right direction. Thanks.

At least I don't know of any other way to make it work. But given that
it's "supposed to work" according to Ruurd's page, I may simply have
missed the workaround/fix. Maybe somebody else knows.

Sincerely,
Jose Capco

Adding Figure To Book Title Page

2005-02-07 Thread Rich Shepard
I am not having success adding the cover figure to the title page of my
book. Placing the cursor at the end of the title and pressing ctrl-enter,
then inserting the figure (centered) displays it on the obverse of the title
page.
Is there a way to do this?
Thanks,

Shrinking Page Count

2005-02-07 Thread Rich Shepard
What could possibly cause pdflatex output to decrease from 288 pages to
280 pages when the content has not been changed? The page size is "custom"
(6.128x9.25 inches). When I first produced pdflatex output the total page
count was 288. I made a couple of typographical corrections and the count is
down to 280. I'm completely puzzled.
TIA,

Thanks,
Rich

Re: updating dvi's and using package

Dear List,
Why doesn't my dvi update whenever I try to (I'm using
Ruurd's port). I need to always exit lyx and then open
lyx again and view the dvi by pressing control-d and I
see the updates.. something looks buggy here.
This happens to me when I open a LyX file by double-clicking the
document icon. It does not happen if I open the document using the LyX
file open command, nor if I open a command window in the directory
containing the document and start LyX with "lyx -userdir ".

The path information embedded in the file
names seems to be throwing off LyX when it does a View->Update; I'm
guessing that it looks for test.dvi rather than _dir1_dir2_test.dvi.

The only work-around I can see is to avoid double-clicking file icons.
And could someone advise how I can use packages like
amsthm ...etc.
I highly recommend Herbert Voss's math-mode guide
(http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/info/math/voss/).

No, it works fine. Press Ctrl-d to open the dvi and the dvi-viewer. If
you changed your text, press Ctrl-d again for a new dvi-viewer window
with the actualized dvi, or better, press Ctrl-Shift-d to see the
updated dvi in the same dvi-viewer window.
(This doesn't always work if you change an image inside LyX if you meant
that.)

And could someone advise how I can use packages like
amsthm
The package amsthm is preinstalled on every LaTeX-distribution, so take
a look at its documentation. To use package with LyX, use the command

\usepackage[options]{package-name}
in the preamble.
But as you can read in the official LaTeX-package catalogue:
ftp://ftp.dante.de/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/amsthm.html
amsthm is part of all AMS-classes like amsbook.
You only need this package, if you want to use its theorem-style in
other document classes.

...etc. and finally make my own layout
(document class). I just don't like the way theorems,
definitions, ... etc. appear in the available layouts.
I don't understand you. You request for the theorem style of the
amsthm-package, but don't like its style. So don't use it, if you don't
like it.
Another possibility for own theorem styles is to use the package "ntheorem".

some fiddling around I was able to view .eps/.pdf images withing LyX on
one occasion but I came back to my computer a few hours later, turned it
on again and I could no longer view .eps/.pdf within LyX.
As Windows user you should better restart Windows in such cases before
become panic and before re/installing programs.

I thought there
might be a conflict between I.M. and Ghostscript so to try and fix the
problem I removed AFPL Ghostscript 8.50 and installed GNU Ghostscript7.05
No,no,no,no,no! Don't play around without concept! I tested ghostscript
8.50 and Imagemagick 6.1.9 on several machines (Win200 and XP) with
success. I can only help you, when you follow my advices.

But OK, let's restart the whole thing:
1. deinstall ghostscript 7.05 AND Imagemagick
2. install ghostscript 8.50 (as admin!)
3. install Imagemagick 6.1.9 (ImageMagick-6.1.9-Q16-windows-dll.exe)
4. restart your computer
5. reconfigure LyX
6. restart LyX
7. try to insert an pdf/eps-image
if an error occured again but you are able to see png/jpg/gif-images
inside LyX, then:

8. assure that all LyX-folders have write permissions for "everybody"
9. start LyX from the command line with the command:
lyx -dbg 3
10. try again to load an /pdf/eps-image and look what happens in the
console window
10. send the output of the console window together with the path to the
file "convert.exe" (the Imagemagick installation folder) to the list.

> GNU Ghostscript 7.05

Where did you found this?
C:\Documents\graphics>convert eps:aulogo.eps ppm:test.ppm
convert.exe: no decode delegate for this image format `aulogo.eps'.
convert.exe: missing an image filename `ppm:test.ppm'.
As I wrote you in one of the previous emails, the actual Imagemagick has
problems to work with older ghostscript versions (only on windows).

\bibitem{Wedin1997}
Second error:
Undefined control sequence.
 \bibitem{Wedin1997}

Best,
Stefano
