pdflatex & MacOS X

2005-10-11 Thread David Philp
Hi

This is along the lines of the recent "lyx MacOS" thread. I have the
same problem with the following symptoms:

(1) "View PDF (pdflatex)" does nothing
(nothing means it grinds away a little bit and then does nothing. Lyx
is responsive.)
(2) "File -> Export -> PDF (pdflatex)" does nothing (produces no file
in appropriate directory)
(3) other methods of viewing do not work because the document uses "pdfpages"
but
(4) "File -> Export -> Latex" works, and produces a latex document
that works when compiled in texshop using pdflatex.
and more confusing
(5) other documents that do NOT use "pdfpages" work as expected with pdflatex.

So I know that my document isn't broken at any stage, and that my
latex probably isn't broken either...

I have tried fiddling as in the recent "lyx MacOS" thread (i.e.
http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg42267.html )
with no success.

I am using the most recent version of Lyx 1.3.6-2, on OS 10.4. I
originally wrote this file in Lyx a few weeks ago... and it worked
fine then too!

TIA, David

I recommend the latin modern fonts. They are based on
computern modern and under the GPL. You find them in
OpenType format here:

ftp://ftp.dante.de/tex-archive/fonts/ps-type1/lm/fonts/opentype/public/lm/

the equivalent for CMR is lmroman.

The \triangleright is a math symbol, then you must use
it between '$', as below:

\begin{enumerate}

\item faire un double du calque, le travail se fait à

\item Calque $\triangleright$ Couleurs
$\triangleright$ Désaturer

jurabib from within lyx

2005-10-11 Thread Lachlan
Hi,

I am a science student, and so the standard NatBib stuff within Lyx has been
all I have ever used. However, I am doing a history subject and want more
humanity-friendly references (full references as footnotes).

After a while browsing and searching online, it seems that the jurabib package
is what I need, but I can't get it to work. Nor can I find a useful howto
anywhere.

Following bits of advice from all over the place, this is what I have done:
- turned off NatBib in the document preferences.
- added the following line to the Preamble under document preferences:
\usepackage[bibformat=numbered]{jurabib}
- selected jurabib as the style for the bibtex generated references

I have created a test document with only one reference from a database of about
10 entries. I now have it down to one Latex error when I try to produce DVI
output (I started with many many more). This error occurs in the line where
the reference is cited, and says:

"Paragraph ended before \org@@citex was complete
I suspect you've forgotten a "}", causing me to apply this control sequence to
too much text. How can we recover? My plan is to forget the whole thing and
hope for the best."

I would greatly appreciate assistance with this problem.

Symbol in ERT

2005-10-11 Thread Raymond Ouellette
Québec, le 11 octobre 2005

I'm using beamer class for a pdf presentation of Gimp next week. In a slide, I
use a block box written using ERT. My problem is that I want to insert a right
triangle to mimic a right arrow. The symbol is \triangleright but I dont't know
how to insert it inside the ERT?

Here is the ERT text of the box:

\begin{block}<2->{La technique du calque désaturé et inversé}
\begin{enumerate}
\item faire un double du calque, le travail se fait à partir du double
\item Calque -> Couleurs -> Désaturer

[blabla]

\end{enumerate}
\end{block}

I want to relace "->" with \triangleright between Calque, Couleurs and
Désaturer but then LyX refuses to compile the pdf.

converting tex to lyx; layouts

2005-10-11 Thread Tomoki Tsuchiya

Hi there,
I am using win32 lyx 1.3.6.
I am wondering why I can't convert tex file to lyx file. is it possible at
all?

As well as that, I am searching for a good site, explaining how to create
layout files.
How can one make cls files for tex, usable in lyx? Related to this question.
How can
one open .ins file using lyx? (This has to be done apparently to get cls
out.)

I spent hours searching the net, and frankly, I am fed up with fiddling

all the time to make is more useful. Is there any good web site which I can
go and rest

my tired mind...?

Cheers!

Thanks, Helge,

It does exactly as you say with the
   «The word was » [I'll call F style]
quoting style, but not with the
  ``The word was `foo' ''[I'll call E style]
style.

Here's the lyx for my E style example:

   \begin_inset Quotes eld
   \end_inset

   The word was
   \begin_inset Quotes els
   \end_inset

   foo
   \begin_inset Quotes ers
   \end_inset

   \begin_inset Quotes erd
   \end_inset

he said.

And here's the dvi:
...foo

The lyx for the F style has "fld" in place of "eld" etc., and it does
indeed produce this dvi with LyX 1.3.6:
...foo

So, apparently it's a bug, at least in LyX 1.3.6, with the E style quotes
but not the F style; I didn't test all the other possibilities.

If you have time, could you verify whether the bug exists in LyX 1.4
for the E style quotes?

> The spacing should be correct too. If it isn't note that both
> lyx 1.3 and lyx 1.4 have "small spaces" in the insert menu.

I can't find a "small space" in my LyX 1.3.6 Insert->Special Character
menu. I have these choices:
  Superscript
  Subscript
  Hfill
  Hyphenation Point
  Ligature Break
  Protected Blank
  Line Break
  Ellipsis
  End of Sentence
  Ordinary Quote
  Menu Separator

Protected Blank puts this in the lyx:
  \SpecialChar ~
and produces exactly the same size space as an ordinary space, one em,
as my eyes measure it. An ERT \ does the same.

The that appears between the single and double quotes
in my examples looks like about one-third of an em.

Am I looking on the wrong menu for the "small spaces" you mention?

Thanks again for the help.

Instant Preview very slow in 1.4pre2

2005-10-11 Thread Marius Ionescu
Hi.

I have been using the cvs and now the pre2 version of LyX for some time now.
I think it is a wonderful program. I compile it on Ubuntu 5.04 and I use the
qt frontend. Recently I noticed that LyX is very slow when the "Instant
Preview" option is set to "On". For a three page document (with lots of
mathematical formulas), it takes about 30 to 45 seconds to load the
previews. During this process, LyX stops responding, so I have to wait until
finishes loading the images. For a 10 page document it might take up to 2
minutes for this. So I had to set "off" this option in order to be able to
use LyX. With the 1.3.6 version of LyX, it usually takes a few seconds to
load the same files, but I really like the new features in 1.4.

Thank you,
Marius

I am not sure what you say is totally correct. I refer everyone to the
Aspell website

http://aspell.net/win32/

What you have to do is

1) Install Aspell (this is merely the program that checks the spelling and
is language independent)

http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/aspell/w32/Aspell-0-50-3-3-Setup.exe

2) Give Aspell a dictionary to use. This requires installing one of the
dictionaries.

For example Breton
http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/aspell/w32/Aspell-br-0.50-2-3.exe

Downloading a dictionary does not install Aspell again over the top of step
1.

If you follow the steps above you can have a working spell checker in no
time at all (depending on your connection speed)

BTW all this is explained on the Aspell site..

C:\Aspell should contain just the uninstallers (one for aspell and one

If that's not the case, perhaps you run the uninstaller, remove any

Bugs in 1.4.0pre2

2005-10-11 Thread Daniel Watkins
All the developers will be glad to hear that this isn't actually a bug
report! :P One of the developers is likely to say this sooner or later
(and I've seen it said in a few individual bug reports), but I thought
I'd add this now, to save them time (scarce resources being what they
are).

Bug reports are very useful, and the developers are most grateful for
you finding them and reporting them. However, your reports can be twice
as useful to them if, before reporting them, you search for them at
http://bugzilla.lyx.org. If you don't find your problem on there, then
create a new bug there as well as posting up on here (or, better,
lyx-devel@lists.lyx.org).

This saves a lot of time for the developers as well as ensuring that
your problem doesn't get lost in the ether.

Obviously, if you aren't sure, dump a message up here and someone will
help you out.

Hoping he's not sounding too self-righteous,

some observations about lyx1.4pre2

2005-10-11 Thread Sanders, Maarten (M.J.L.)
Hi,

I am just playing a bit with lyx1.4pre2. some observations:

1) Compiling goes easy on Mandrake 2005

2) I did an open, modify and save from my previous docs, a master doc
with several input's (this converts to the new format?). Using lyx2lyx
warns:

warning: malformed lyx file: missing 'collapsed'
warning: malformed lyx file: missing 'wide'

3) I have segmentation faults whenever I touch the Navigate menu item
with my 'original' documents. New documents seem OK.

4) I have hyperref package included in my layout preamble, but no
bookmarks appear in the pdflatex'ed PDF. The latex log file however
speaks about my hyperref options (set in layout preamble). Also when I
create a new document the first time I invoke a pdf I see the bookmarks
but they all point to page '0'. The next time all bookmarks are gone.

5) Branches, extremly useful feature. Unfortunatly the settings of a
branch in a master document are not propagated to child documents having
branches with the same name. Also, it is not possible - I mean I did not
succeed - to put an item of a numbered list in a branch. e.g.

1. One
branch 2. two
3. Three (or two)

Hope this helps,

Maarten

I found that the problem was without solution as far as the pictures
were true images (i.e. raster images). But the rendering is very fast if
one use eps pictures coming from xfig (or directly xfig).
You may extract such pictures from ps ones by using pstoedit (with linux):

pstoedit -f fig toto.ps >toto.fig

The main advantage of this method (apart from the speed of the loading
of pictures) is that you may edit the pictures to your taste.

You may do the same thing with ps files with embedded postscript figures
by fractionning your file in pages:

psselect -p 1 blabla.ps page1.ps
pstoedit -f fig page1.ps >page1.fig

and by removing the superfluous text with xfig

I use frequently this method, which works correctly if the ps files are
not in fact raster pictures.

This advice holds true if the pdf document is generated using pdflatex to
go from lyx->latex->pdf but not if it is generated using the
lyx->latex->dvi->ps->pdf compilation chain.

Sometimes I use the rendering to a PDF file, but I don't like it because
it takes a lot of time to start the acroread program. The same to the
other preview options.

Thanks in advance.

I think, but am willing to stand corrected, that this is occuring for the
following reasons.

.dvi files do not contain any information about the figures apart from their
path. So when the dvi loads up it has to load the images separately when you
view a page. As such looking at page 2 will load the figures on page 2, but
then when you go to page 3 it has to load those figures, etc, etc..If
the figures are complicated this will take time. There is no solution to
this as whichever image file type you have the figures still need to be
loaded in and rendered each time you view a page.

As for compiling the pdf, this does contain all the figures from the outset,
but first they must be converted from .eps or .jpg to .pdf. In my experience
this takes a long time, again longer for complicated figures. The solution
to this one is to have all your figures as .pdf from the outset.

Hope this helps

Did you check Aspell independently of LyX to see
that it
was correctly installed with the correct dictionary?
So that
you created some small file containing a few
deliberately
misspelled words and Aspell corrected them? If the
test file
is once corrected then test with LyX. 'No words were
found'
means no words were misspelled in the opinion of the
spellchecker. Also within a document, the
spellchecker
checks from the cursor location and on towards left
and
end of the document. If you haven't repositioned the
cursor
to the beginning of the document, and the cursor
happens
to be at the end or near the end, of course it won't
find any
misspelled words and will say "No words are found",
when
you run the spellchecker. At least that is how it
works for me.

What's the way to test Aspell without lyx? When I
install it, its program group only shows the
uninstaller. No other executable app. How can I do it?

   Thanks to help me!

Douglas

I would create a test.txt file with a couple of deliberately
wrong spelled words in it.
"I am speled wron"

You can save this file on the desktop so that
if you have made a desktop icon which says
Aspell (drop files here) you can drag the
test.txt file into it and it should work.
Using Windows, and if you installed Aspell
into c:\aspell you can also save test.txt
in C:\Aspell. then from c:\aspell type
"aspell check test.txt"
This information is available by reading the
documentation.

Good luck,

How do I make Chapters with no title ? by using a protected space ? Anything
better ?

Yes. I know of no better way. Use "Chapter*" if you also want
to get rid of the chapter number and the entry in the table of contents.

This is easy in lyx-1.4, where you do this:
Set the quoting style to double qoutes. You probably have that already.
Then write the sentence. Use "insert->special character->single quote"
when you need a single quote for the inner citation. Correct spacing
is added as needed, at least that happende for me with this sort
of quoting style: «The word was » he said.

It is also possible (but cumbersome) in lyx 1.3:
Set quoting style to double qoutes. Write everything, but skip
the single quotes. Change quoting style to single quotes.
(That won't affect the existing double quotes in there.)
Now type the single quotes. Then, change the style back if you need.

The spacing should be correct too. If it isn't note that both
lyx 1.3 and lyx 1.4 have "small spaces" in the insert menu.

Sorry, David. I'm very busy ATM. Could you file BOTH bug reports on
bugzilla.lyx.org so that I don't forget it.

Meantime, but your research.bib file somewhere without a space...

I do :-)

However, there're currently a couple of bugs in our (and Qt/WinFree's) font
loading code which prevent lyx from firing up.

You should use CVS to grab the lyx and Qt/WinFree repositories. See
http://www.lyx.org/devel/cvs.php
http://kde-cygwin.sourceforge.net/qt3-win32/index.php

How you proceed thereafter depends on which compiler you want to use. LyX
is known to work with both MSVC (can't help you there) and with MinGW. If
you go with the latter, then be prepared for really *long* compile times.
About 1 hour to compile Qt/WinFree and 2 hours to subsequently compile LyX
on this 2.7GHz machine...

Aspell does not have a graphical user interface.
Open a command line window (bash or xterm in linux,
or run "cmd.exe" in windows)

Then type the command:
aspell -c filename

Where filename is a _text_ file you want to spellcheck.

Top see all the options aspell support:
aspell -?

To see more documentation (on linux):
man aspell

Then they shouldn't bother with computers . . .
Seriously, even new versions of the windows os itself tends to change
so much that the user needs to learn a lot.

I can't remember if the content of http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/LyX136
is repeated in an Install or Readme file accompanying the release. Also
since it is the first officially supported release of Lyx for windows,
there

should be no expectation of being even nearly "fully featured".

Of course, it is possible to make an alternative lyx for windows package
wich includes everything, even latex. That'd be a "lyx for dummies"
package,

while the current package still is nice for those who have latex and
other stuff already. Windows could use a decent package management
system. :-)
