Bold face of greek fonts in math mode

2006-08-10 Thread Giovanni Luca Ciampaglia
Hello,
I tried all fonts available on the documents settings but $\mathbf{\pi}$
doesn't show any visual difference from $\pi$, in other words, it
doesn't seem to be bold! This happens on DVI, PS and PDF exports too.
Do I have to choose a different font (I use palatino 12pt)?
Or maybe a particular Postscript Driver (I'm with default)?

Try using the boldmath package. Just write \usepackage{bm} in your preamble,
and then, inside your math environment, write \bm{\pi} and you'll get the bold
pi character.

Uwe Confirmed, please fill out a bug report at bugzilla.lyx.org

Note that, as far as I know, this bug has nothing to do with Notes,
but is general to all collapsable insets (footnote, short title, ...).

It is already reported here:

http://bugzilla.lyx.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2723

However, this might not be the best place. Maybe a new bug concerning
all collapsable insets should be reported.

The problem is that I cannot tell what the good behaviour is. If you
did select the whole line and chose insert note, you would have
expected to keep the itemize layout wouldn't you?

Yes, I would expect that. In general I would just expect that the words
I select are changed into grey, without any other changes to the
document. This behaviour would be consistent in all situations. For
example, if I select a word within a given paragraph and transform it
into a greyed note, I do not expect a new paragraph to be created for
the note's text. I just expect the note's text to be changed into grey.
If I select the whole paragraph, I expect the whole paragraph to be in
grey. The same applies to itemize.

The case of footnote is slightly different, I think. However, the case
of short title is exactly the same.

Since this feature uses cut and paste internally, I guess the question
is what happens if you copy a word from an enumeration to an empty
paragraph? When shall we copy the style along with the text?

(or at least moved) the bug. Then again, perhaps I'm asking too much of

This brings me back to my thesis that somewhere there is a buffer

environment variables beats me, but I'll take another shot on the

This problem with preview is still not 100% gone. I have to change the PATH

depending on which Lyx document I open. At this time, only the document that

the official version but show preview problem with Matlab copy of GS.

Idea for meta-search in wiki. Help wanted.

2006-08-10 Thread christian . ridderstrom
I've just had an idea. Today the search bar in the wiki let's you search
the wiki for pages containing one or more words. The search result is
displayed on a page which for instance looks like this:

http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/LyX?n=LyX.LyXaction=searchq=ideas

That page again contains the search field that allows you to modify the
search - nothing exciting so far.

However, what if the search page contained additional links and forms
that let you search more than just the wiki? How about searching this
mailing list? Or searching Herbert's tips and tricks on LaTeX?

My idea is simply that if you can't find what you're looking for on the
wiki, you want to search for the information elsewhere. So why not make
this easier. A very easy way to improve the situation is to simply add
links to the search page, e.g. something saying:

Click here to go and search the users' list

Any of us can edit the search page to add links. Just edit this page

http://wiki.lyx.org/Site/Search

All this requires is that we now the URI of the page to go to in order to
search. This is where I need help. I'd like to know of useful places to go
to in order to search for information related to LyX, e.g. how do we
search the archives of the users' list? How do we search Herbert's Tips
and Tricks?

You don't even have to e-mail me this information. I just created this
page

http://wiki.lyx.org/Site/SearchExternally

so feel free to go there and add the links. I'll take care of it from
there.

However, we can probably do better than just a link to some other site.
Given a search URI and its format, i.e. how the search parameters map to
the URI, I can easily create a form that allows the user to submit the
actual search from the wiki page.

An example is a google search for 'lyx', 'clever' and 'ideas':

http://www.google.com/search?q=lyx+clever+ideas

So if I have the URI that's needed in order to search for instance the
mail archive for the words idea and clever, it should be easy for me
to modify the search page so that this is possible.

What I don't know is how this URI should look, and how the search terms
should be inserted. I'd like some help with that.

This can possibly be taken even a step further, by taking the result of
the external search and showing it inside the wiki page. Opinions on if
this is actually useful or not are most welcome.

Finally,
cheers
/Christian

Another LyX Idiom

2006-08-10 Thread Rich Shepard

I probably noticed this behavior before, but it did not register long
enough to comment on. However, as I edit my presentation notes it comes up
over and over, so I thought to mention it here.

When I delete a line and want to close the space, I need to place the
cursor at the end of the preceding line, then press [Del]. If the cursor is
at the beginning of the blank line when I press [Backspace], nothing
happens.

This is not a major issue, just a minor irritant. Has anyone else
experienced this? I see it in the Beamer class and the article class I'm
using for my slide-by-slide notes.

Good idea. I've got all these bookmarked, but I think a number of
people don't know what resources there are. If we're going to put
possible search venues on the wiki, being able to access them from the

That looks good for Google, with the addition that you might want to
allow quoted phrases (lyx and clever ideas becomes
lyx+%22clever+ideas%22 in googlish). For the mailing list, the GMANE
server URI would look like

http://search.gmane.org/?query=lyx+clever+ideagroup=gmane.editors.lyx.general

(changing 'general' to 'devel' for the developer mailing list).

This can possibly be taken even a step further, by taking the result of
the external search and showing it inside the wiki page. Opinions on if
this is actually useful or not are most welcome.

I would be inclined to display the result in a child window. That way,
the user isn't bumped off the wiki. On the other hand, for people using
tabbed browsers (which I do), it might be better just to use a regular
HREF link. I'm not sure whether ctrl-click on a link with a child
target opens a new tab or not. (Some portion of my brain knows this,
but it's currently on strike.)

Is there a way to see the original Latex source file in LyX?

2006-08-10 Thread Michael

Hi all,

I am editing a Latex file which was originally from WinEdt.

As we know that in Latex raw source file, in the preamble part, there are a
lot of definitions of new commends, for instance, the following being one:

\newcommand{\kcal}{\mathcal{K}}
\newcommand{\acal}{\mathcal{A}}
\newtheorem{thm}{Theorem}[section]

...

Now how do I see these new definitions of commands in LyX?

It would be a great if LyX could provide a convinient reminder of all these
new definitions so that I can use them fastly...

Any possibilities?

Thanks a lot!

For 1.4.x, you can export - latex and have a look at the source. For
1.5.x, there is a view- source dialog in which you can see part or
all source code.

Try using the boldmath package. Just write \usepackage{bm} in your preamble,

This brings me back to my thesis that somewhere there is a buffer

environment variables beats me, but I'll take another shot on the

This problem with preview is still not 100% gone. I have to change the PATH

I see it in the Beamer class and the article class I'm
using for my slide-by-slide notes.

\newcommand{\kcal}{\mathcal{K}}
\newcommand{\acal}{\mathcal{A}}
\newtheorem{thm}{Theorem}[section]

Just write \usepackage{bm} in your preamble,
and then, inside your math environment, write \bm{\pi} and you'll get the bold

Do you mean that htlatex works for you from either LyX or the command line?

I tested it from within LyX and found the bug that tex4ht doesn't

Don't use this package because it can only bold single characters. LyX
has built in support for bold: use the commands

\boldsymbol\pi

In my installation, a note containing "Bob" and inheriting the
itemize style is created. That is, the note's text appears as a new
indented item.

Uwe> Confirmed, please fill out a bug report at bugzilla.lyx.org

Since this feature uses cut and paste internally, I guess the question
is "what happens if you copy a word from an enumeration to an empty
paragraph?" When shall we copy the style along with the text?

Yes it does look like that. However, I used the Miktex2.5 complete

miktex-etex-base.cab\texmf\tex\latex - CAB archive, unpacked size
137,302 bytes

So it is Ok that they display that way, or they are all wrong! :-)

However, use MiKTeX's package manager to assure that you've installed
the correct package "tex4ht" AND "miktex-tex4ht".

If they are installed, update MiKTeX because just yesterday came out a

That does sound promising. Let me check comp.text.tex

I think this may very well work now.

LyX's temp directory path contains spaces.

I will be happy if it works from the command line. I will
change the LyX temp and work directories to C:\lyxtemp and
C:\lyxwork, no spaces. I don't see why M$ couldn't have used
for C:\program files -> C:\programs like you have C:\programmes

I was suspicious of making the default c:\program files|miktex 2.5
not because of Miktex and paths and spaces but those helper modules
like bibtex, I think, also don't like paths with spaces. I filed a
bug about copying converted image files from a temp dir for LyX.

But anyway, could you please file a bug report at MiKTeX sourceforge

I will give this another try with no spaces anywhere. It used to work
from the command line "htlatex myfile(.tex)" before even with spaces.

Which would not explain why futzing with the environment variables cured
(or at least moved) the bug. Then again, perhaps I'm asking too much of
the bug as far as consistency goes.

This brings me back to my thesis that somewhere there is a buffer
overflow. How/why it would involve both the file paths/names and
environment variables beats me, but I'll take another shot on the
developer list and see what shakes.

This problem with preview is still not 100% gone. I have to change the PATH
to point to a different copy of GS (Matlab copy or "official" copy)
depending on which Lyx document I open. At this time, only the document that
first exhibit this problem needs PATH to point to Matlab copy of GS for
preview to work. All other documents I have opened so far work fine with
the "official" version but show preview problem with Matlab copy of GS.

Idea for meta-search in wiki. Help wanted.

2006-08-10 Thread christian . ridderstrom
I've just had an idea. Today the search bar in the wiki let's you search
the wiki for pages containing one or more words. The search result is
displayed on a page which for instance looks like this:

http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/LyX?n=LyX.LyX=search=ideas

That page again contains the search field that allows you to modify the
search - nothing exciting so far.

However, what if the "search page" contained additional links and forms
that let you search more than just the wiki? How about searching this
mailing list? Or searching Herbert's tips and tricks on LaTeX?

My idea is simply that if you can't find what you're looking for on the
wiki, you want to search for the information elsewhere. So why not make
this easier. A very easy way to improve the situation is to simply add
links to the "search page", e.g. something saying:

"Click here to go and search the users' list"

Any of us can edit the "search page" to add links. Just edit this page

http://wiki.lyx.org/Site/Search

All this requires is that we now the URI of the page to go to in order to
search. This is where I need help. I'd like to know of useful places to go
to in order to search for information related to LyX, e.g. how do we
search the archives of the users' list? How do we search Herbert's Tips
and Tricks?

You don't even have to e-mail me this information. I just created this
page

http://wiki.lyx.org/Site/SearchExternally

so feel free to go there and add the links. I'll take care of it from
there.

However, we can probably do better than just a link to some other site.
Given a "search URI" and its format, i.e. how the search parameters map to
the URI, I can easily create a form that allows the user to submit the
actual search from the wiki page.

An example is a google search for 'lyx', 'clever' and 'ideas':

http://www.google.com/search?q=lyx+clever+ideas

So if I have the URI that's needed in order to search for instance the
mail archive for the words "idea" and "clever", it should be easy for me
to modify the search page so that this is possible.

I see it in the Beamer class and the article class I'm
using for my slide-by-slide notes.

mixing column formats

Hi,

I am writing a paper using the IEEEtran document class. This is a
two-column format. I would like to place some tables on a page by
themselves. The tables are wide so they need to use width of page rather
than one of the two columns. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can
do this? I am using LyX 1.4.1 on Windows. Thank you in advance.

Use a table float and right-click on its grey box. Within the appearing

Good idea. I've got all these bookmarked, but I think a number of
people don't know what resources there are. If we're going to put
possible search venues on the wiki, being able to access them from the
wiki makes sense.

That looks good for Google, with the addition that you might want to
allow quoted phrases (lyx and "clever ideas" becomes
lyx+%22clever+ideas%22 in googlish). For the mailing list, the GMANE
server URI would look like

http://search.gmane.org/?query=lyx+clever+idea=gmane.editors.lyx.general

\newcommand{\kcal}{\mathcal{K}}
\newcommand{\acal}{\mathcal{A}}
\newtheorem{thm}{Theorem}[section]

...

Now how do I see these "new definitions" of commands in LyX?

It would be a great if LyX could provide a convinient reminder of all these
new definitions so that I can use them fastly...

Any possibilities?

Thanks a lot!

For 1.4.x, you can export -> latex and have a look at the source. For
1.5.x, there is a view-> source dialog in which you can see part or
all source code.
