Help with spellchecking and german Umlaute

Hi there,

i use (want use) the mac version of lyx for my examen. one thing i
cant get working is spellchecking with german Umlaute like ‰ ¸ ˆ or
fl. i use cocoaspell and a german dictionary. Every wird without a
umlaut is ok but if it contains one spellchecker told me i wrote wrong.

Can anybody help me?

Thanks in advance.

Here are the main comments I have as a user:

1- Like your previous package, your installer lacks 3 python files. It
prevents opening any previous format and consequently the documentation.
They are files required by Lyx2Lyx (they were not required in version
1.5): gettext.py, optparse.py and textwrap.py.

Many thanks for testing. I will add the missing files to the next release.

2- I had some runtime C crashes..

3- The bundled format option is broken...

4- Toggles are not perfect...

Whenever you get a crash or found a bug, please report it at bugzilla.lyx.org (if not already
reported there).

5- I haven't been able to have the spellchecker to work. It complains
about not finding the en_US dictionary, but this one is installed, and
the installer told me it had found it.

I'll have a look, seems that the installer conflicts with the settings of the existing LyX aspell
installation.

PS: Is there a way to have PNG images displayed in lyx to be
interpolated with linear interpolation instead of nearest neighbour ? I
use a 50% scale, and they look terrible. I could not find in the
preference (viewer and editor are on auto)

I think this can be done with a special ImageMagick option, but don't know this exactly. In general,
the image display in LyX is not designed for perfect looking within LyX as they will in any case
look different in the output. They are only there to show what image is what and how big they are.

Short caption listoffigures

is there a possibility to a short caption for the listoffigures similar

I think this is a MiKTeX/Windows thing. The problem is this is strange
behavior for a fresh install. Did you have an internet connection open
when installing MiKTeX? Are you installing with an administrative
account? Installing just for you or everyone?

The first thing I would do is open an internet connection and 'update'
MiKTeX. If there are no updates then I would go to the MiKTeX
settings-General and 'Refresh FNDB' and 'Update Formats'. If you have
an 'always on' internet connection I would set the 'Package
installation' to 'Yes' install packages on-the-fly.

If none of this works, I would uninstall MiKTeX and LyX and reinstall
with LyX-1.5.4-1-Installer.exe (always helps to reboot Windows between
uninstall and reinstall). Be sure you have an open internet connection
and just accept the defaults for the installation of MiKTeX, the
settings can be changed after install.

That's the problem then. You need to add the path to your paths :-}.
So that LyX knows where all your LaTeX stuff is.

This is what the LyX wiki says, http://wiki.lyx.org/Mac/Mac:

To use other implementations of teTeX which do not install the
binaries in /usr/texbin,
/usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current, /sw/bin,
/opt/local/teTeX/bin, or /usr/local/bin, either link the teTeX
binaries to one of those directories, or add the PATH of your teTeX
binaries to the PATH prefix field in LyX - Preferences - Paths.

I'm not exactly positive what path you need to add which would
correspond to the teTeX binaries. I would just do a trial and error.
First, just add /opt/local/share and then Reconfigure LyX and see if
Document-Settings-Document Class has changed to available. Bennett
is the Mac expert but he hasn't responded yet. I'm sure he would have
a more sophisticated approach.

Re: Best approach to using lyx with a university provided style file?

2008-04-03 Thread B. Bogart
Hello,

Thanks for the response Bob, this is the only was I was able to reply,
so I hope you get the this message.

Also, you say your layout file is called sfuthesis.sty this is not
correct, it should be sfuthesis.layout, since it's a LyX layout file
not a LaTeX style file. I'm surprised that LyX is recognizing this
layout if it does not have the proper extension '.layout.

Ah, I apologize, that is a typo I believe (or I renamed the file after
attaching it). My layout file is named sfuthesis.layout. The style file
(provided by the University) is named csthesis.sty.

I also added and texhashed the sty file so that lyx could find it.

Where did you place the csthesis.sty?

$HOME/texmf/tex/csthesis.sty

texhash created a ls-R file in that directory, and csthesis.sty is
listed in the LyX Show Tex Information

I confirm that article(csthesis) is listed as a document class in Lyx.

This doesn't make sense since you have:
 \DeclareLaTeXClass[article,csthesis.sty]{article (sfuthesis)} in some
 sort of layout file.

This means in LyX it should be 'article (sfuthesis)' not 'article (csthesis)'

Corrected, Lyx shows article (sfuthesis), not article (csthesis) (my
mistake)

I'll recap the main issues here since I'm having trouble with the
mailing list:

The layout file simply controls how the document appears in Lyx, and
does not have any effect on the output, correct?

Even though LyX seems to be using my style file, the output is
different. The titlepage is missing, and the title font is different.

In order to test I imported the latex example file, included with the
csthesis.sty package, into lyx and tried to generate output.

First problem was that I got the following error:

LaTeX Error: There's no line here to end.

Lyx highlights the first \qualification{} command.

All the google references I found talked about this error in terms of
using \\, which is not in the document (no manual line-breaks).

Aside: I did notice that just before the qualification a \maketitle
command in the view-source window. What I don't understand is that
command is not visible as ERT or in any way in the normal lyx view. (and
certainly not in the original LaTeX file I'm importing.)

So I did the logical thing of commenting out (with a preceding % sign)
both the \qualification{} commands. Once that is done Lyx will generate
output, the style of the title is incorrect. (but there is a title page!)

So I exported a second latex file from this document, and commented out
the \maketitle command.

Once that is done I can generate a proper looking document using latex
directly on that tex document.

I'm happy that I've been able to get something to work at all, but how
can I use the proper style in LyX directly without having to manually
edit the tex file after exporting?

Why does the \maketitle command get added when I import the tex?

Why does output bail on the \qualification{} commands?

Why does the output of the document using the layout that uses the
thesis style file not generate output that resembles the sample file?

Thanks for your time,
B. Bogart

Well, I looked at your bbtest.tex file and the first thing I noticed
is that it calls for report.cls. So you should create a
sfuthesis.layout based on report not article.

Anyways, when you insert a title or author field in LyX it
automatically inserts a '\maketitle' command but your bbtest.tex does
not do this.

Long story short. Inserting '\renewcommand\maketitle{}' in the
preamble of bbtest.tex eliminated the errors in the file and produced
good output.

That's the problem then. You need to add the path to your paths :-}.
So that LyX knows where all your LaTeX stuff is.

Yes. I'm not sure where macports puts its latex files, but you can find out
by going to Terminal.app (Applications Utilities) and typing:

which latex

which should return the path to latex. That path (minus the latex part) is
what you need to add to the PATH prefix, as Bob indicated. So for me, which
latex returns:

/usr/texbin/latex

and so I add to the beginning of PATH prefix just the /usr/texbin part,
followed by a colon (:). (Of course, in my case, /usr/texbin is already
there, which is why it works for me.) Then LyX should work for you.

Please let us know what you have to add. I haven't used macports lately, so
I'm not sure where they currently put the latex executables, but we should
make sure that is a part of the default PATH prefix so that others don't
have this problem.

One final note: there's no reason to use macports to install LyX. They
actually tend to be behind the current LyX binaries we post on the LyX
website. All you need to do is download the binary, drag LyX.app wherever
you want it, run the installer, and you're done.

Alan,

  Yes, doubling the backslashes worked.

I'll probably get to this for some of the reports. But, on this one the
text strings need to be aligned with bubbles on an OMR form. So I need to
tweak the horizontal and vertical spacings to get it all lined up
appropriately.

BTW, I tried using PyX for this but didn't find enough information in the
docs to feel confident that I could.

Dov,

Thank you for the recommendation. But, I don't see why I want to put html
code in my python application in order to produce .tex files. Or write xml.
I see the value of the templater for web applications and unstructured
reports. However, that's not what I need.

The sample code I posted needs to be placed precisely on the page so the
pairs are aligned with a row of bubbles on the OMR form.

Other reports need to incorporate plots with the text. Perhaps Cheetah
_could_ do this, but the learning curve and attempts to bend it to our needs
would consume the time it would take me to hand write the LaTeX code.

It seems to me that this calls for a page description
language, like PostScript of PDF. However maybe you
could make a LaTeX picture that matches your page size.
Text and drawings can be placed extremely precisely in

I'll have a look, seems that the installer conflicts with the settings of the existing LyX aspell

I think this can be done with a special ImageMagick option, but don't know this exactly. In general,

It seems to me that this calls for a page description

could make a LaTeX picture that matches your page size.
Text and drawings can be placed extremely precisely in

Those fonts are provided by the cbgreek package and configure could
check for the existence of grmn.mf through kpsewhich. However, even
detecting that cbgreek is not installed, how should we proceed?

The problem is that cbgreek is a font package and its files are not
installed in a path listed in TEXINPUTS, otherwise we could add

\IfFileExists{grmn.mf}{}{%
 \errhelp{I can't find the Greek fonts}%
 \errmessage{The cbgreek package is missing, so I can't typeset Greek}}

to textgreek_def in order to have a meaningful error at runtime, at least.

Then MiKTeX tries to install a missing LaTeX-package, but can't do this as you don't have admin

To get a full featured running system:

- uninstall LyX completely

- log in as administrator
- open an internet connection
- reinstall LyX using the complete variant of this installer:

Sounds like you haven't installed a TeX distribution. The distribution
will contain article.cls which article.layout needs.

I don't know much about Mac stuff, but I thought MacTeX was a popular

Whenever you get a crash or found a bug, please report it at bugzilla.lyx.org (if not already

5- I haven't been able to have the spellchecker to work. It complains

I'll have a look, seems that the installer conflicts with the settings of the existing LyX aspell

interpolated with linear interpolation instead of nearest neighbour ? I
use a 50% scale, and they look terrible. I could not find in the

I think this can be done with a special ImageMagick option, but don't know this exactly. In general,
the image display in LyX is not designed for perfect looking within LyX as they will in any case
look different in the output. They are only there to show what image is what and how big they are.

this should refresh the LaTeX package database. Then open LyX and run

I think this is a MiKTeX/Windows thing. The problem is this is strange
behavior for a fresh install. Did you have an internet connection open
when installing MiKTeX? Are you installing with an administrative
account? Installing just for you or everyone?

The first thing I would do is open an internet connection and 'update'
MiKTeX. If there are no updates then I would go to the MiKTeX
settings->General and 'Refresh FNDB' and 'Update Formats'. If you have
an 'always on' internet connection I would set the 'Package
installation' to 'Yes' install packages on-the-fly.

Cheers,

In LyX Document->Settings->Document Class does 'article' show as
'Unavailable: article'? If so then either you don't have 'article.cls'
installed on your computer through the texlive packages or LyX is not
recognizing the path to texmf* folders.

If you have article.cls installed in one of the
/opt/local/share/texmf* directories then the path needs to be added to
Tools->Preferences->Paths->PATH prefix so that LyX will recognize the
files installed there. You should just need to add /opt/local/share to
the list of paths separated by a semi-colon and then reconfigure LyX.

 Then open LyX and run
Tools->Reconfigure and restart LyX, maybe run Reconfigure twice and
restart LyX. Do you still receive the error message?

 /Bob

I have Tools->TeX Information here and then `LaTex classes' `Latex
styles'

`BibTex styles'. I Rescan them all (twice).
And also LyX->Reconfigure which I did and then it asked me to
restart the

LyX.

 Same error message pops-up!

Here is the file that I am trying to open:

In LyX Document->Settings->Document Class does 'article' show as
'Unavailable: article'?

Yes.

If so then either you don't have 'article.cls'
installed on your computer through the texlive packages or LyX is not
recognizing the path to texmf* folders.

In Tools->TeX Information under `LaTex classes' I have:

/opt/local/share/texmf-dist/tex/latex/base/article.cls

If you have article.cls installed in one of the
/opt/local/share/texmf* directories then the path needs to be added to
Tools->Preferences->Paths->PATH prefix so that LyX will recognize the
files installed there.
In Lyx->Preference->Paths->PATH prefix I have

/usr/texbin:/usr/local/gwTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current:/usr/
local/gwTeX/bin/i386-apple-darwin-current:/usr/local/teTeX/bin/
powerpc-apple-darwin-current:/usr/local/teTeX/bin/i386-apple-darwin-
current:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin:/opt/local/teTeX/bin:/opt/local/bin:/usr/
local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin

You should just need to add /opt/local/share to
the list of paths separated by a semi-colon and then reconfigure LyX.

/Bob

That's the problem then. You need to add the path to your paths :-}.
So that LyX knows where all your LaTeX stuff is.

This is what the LyX wiki says, http://wiki.lyx.org/Mac/Mac:

To use other implementations of teTeX which do not install the
binaries in /usr/texbin,
/usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current, /sw/bin,
/opt/local/teTeX/bin, or /usr/local/bin, either link the teTeX
binaries to one of those directories, or add the PATH of your teTeX
binaries to the PATH prefix field in LyX -> Preferences -> Paths.

I'm not exactly positive what path you need to add which would
correspond to the teTeX binaries. I would just do a trial and error.
First, just add /opt/local/share and then Reconfigure LyX and see if
Document-Settings->Document Class has changed to "available". Bennett
is the Mac expert but he hasn't responded yet. I'm sure he would have
a more sophisticated approach.

>

$HOME/texmf/tex/csthesis.sty

texhash created a ls-R file in that directory, and csthesis.sty is
listed in the LyX "Show Tex Information"

>> I confirm that article(csthesis) is listed as a document class in Lyx.

> This means in LyX it should be 'article (sfuthesis)' not 'article (csthesis)'

Corrected, Lyx shows "article (sfuthesis)", not "article (csthesis)" (my

Yes. I'm not sure where macports puts its latex files, but you can find out
by going to Terminal.app (Applications > Utilities) and typing:

which latex

which should return the path to latex. That path (minus the "latex" part) is
what you need to add to the PATH prefix, as Bob indicated. So for me, "which
latex" returns:

/usr/texbin/latex

and so I add to the beginning of PATH prefix just the "/usr/texbin" part,
followed by a colon (":"). (Of course, in my case, "/usr/texbin" is already
there, which is why it works for me.) Then LyX should work for you.
