It is needed whenever you have to add something after \end{letter}. Normally,
LyX just puts an \end{letter} automatically at the end of the document.

One use case are serial letters. See the serial letter examples shipped with
LyX.

 The reason I ask is
that I'm sending a client a letter proposal and I want to attach two other
.lyx files after the signature/close of the main letter. Yes, I can
probably add them as separate pdf pages using pdftk, but I'd like to have
it all as a single file within LyX if possible.

I'm not aware of such a possibility. Using the PDFpages external inset after
the closing seems to work, though.

If there is a way to add attachments to a KOMA-Script2 letter, please
point me to the documentation on how to do this.

Two ways, depending on what you want:

1. Look at the User's Guide, §3.4.5, especially the example in
§3.4.5.4. In short, you can nest a standard paragraph in between the
enumerations.

2. Use the Customizable Lists (enumitem) module, and then select the
Enumerate-Resume environment instead of Enumerate. In this case,
no nesting of intervening paragraphs is needed. Information on this

You might also grep the preferences file in that folder; entries in preferences
override those in lyxrc.defaults.

If that also looks reasonable, you might rename the entire .lyx directory to

I guess in lieu of that, I will be hunting down a copy of NeoOffice.

Juergen,

  I got that impression.

One use case are serial letters. See the serial letter examples shipped with
LyX.

If there's time I'll look to see what a serial letter is.

I'm not aware of such a possibility. Using the PDFpages external inset
after the closing seems to work, though.

What also works is to put the LaTeX {\newpage} on a line at the end of the
letter, then import another .lyx file. I now have 2 attachments added like
this and the document correctly displays when I look at the preview.
Therefore, it should also correctly compile.

problem with a bibtex style

2011-01-24 Thread Harold Mouras
Dear Lyx Users,

I am working at the moment on a paper for a journal in which bibliography
should appear like that:

Journal article
Gamelin FX, Baquet G, Berthoin S, Thevenet D, Nourry C, Nottin S, Bosquet L
(2009) Effect of high intensity intermittent training on heart rate
variability in prepubescent children. Eur J Appl Physiol 105:731-738. doi:
10.1007/s00421-008-0955-8
Ideally, the names of all authors should be provided, but the usage of “et
al” in long author lists will also be accepted:
Smith J, Jones M Jr, Houghton L et al (1999) Future of health insurance. N
Engl J Med 965:325–329

Would you have any idea about a corresponding bibtex style ?
Thanks you very much in advance,
Sincerely yours,
Harold Mouras

A letter to several addressees, where the address, the greeting etc. are taken
from an address database. KOMA-script provides this functionality.

Ah, cool. I didn't know this.

Enumerate is the same

2011-01-24 Thread Charles
Hello,

I have three enumerations: 1,2,3. The problem is when I try and type the
word "OR" between the enumerations, they begin renumbering at 1, instead of
2 and 3. Basically, I have three #1's. How can I keep enumerate in
descending order, while having a standard word in between?

Thanks

Charles

Two ways, depending on what you want:

1. Look at the User's Guide, §3.4.5, especially the example in
§3.4.5.4. In short, you can nest a standard paragraph in between the
enumerations.

2. Use the "Customizable Lists (enumitem)" module, and then select the
"Enumerate-Resume" environment instead of "Enumerate". In this case,
no nesting of intervening paragraphs is needed. Information on this
module (and enumitem) can be found here:

Yes, that looks all ok to me

rd@blackbox:~/.lyx$ grep pdf2 lyxrc.defaults|grep -v pdf2ps
\Format pdf2 pdf"PDF (pdflatex)"F "xdg-open" ""
"document,vector"
\converter pdflatex pdf2 "pdflatex $$i" "latex"
rd@blackbox:~/.lyx$

Thanks,
Rainer

Re: highlight current line or make cursor bigger?

2011-01-24 Thread Jose Quesada
Is there any way we can have a cursor say 10-pixel wide?
It doesn't feel like it would be very hard to implement (correct me if I'm
wrong).
It's a tiny detail, but it may help a lot improve the overall user
experience. Some people may not notice, but tracking a 1-pixel-wide thing
burns a lot of attentional resources...

Thanks,

advanced search and replace should leave you where you were after finishing

2011-01-24 Thread Jose Quesada
Hi,

I notice that when I do a search-replace, at the end I'm at the beginning of
the doc.
advanced search and replace should leave you where you were after finishing,
Otherwise it breaks the writting flow.
Again, a very minor usability issue.

Thanks!

Re: PDF (pdflatex) View Missing

2011-01-24 Thread Paul Rubin
You might also grep the preferences file in that folder; entries in preferences
override those in lyxrc.defaults.

If that also looks reasonable, you might rename the entire .lyx directory to
something else (for safekeeping) and then restart LyX. It should create a new
.lyx directory. I've seen reports of odd or inexplicable problems that
persisted until the user directory was regenerated (although I think those were
mainly if not exclusively on Windows).

As sub- and super-scripts, for instance

\sum_{i=1}^{N}

If you are using the math toolbar, after clicking the sigma button, use the
subscript and superscript buttons (toward the left of the toolbar). Be sure to
exit the subscript (or superscript, whichever you use first) before starting the
other one.
