Bug ?

I recompiled lyx yesterday (on a gentoo system), adding support to luatex and
xetex. Now, none of the book class documents compile (they use to compile
without any problem). Every once in a while, compile fails with a message like:

How to edit when Lyx doesn't show the text?

2011-09-03 Thread Guest_NP

Dear Sirs,

I need to manually correct some source text (XeTeX, textgreek shows up
in the wrong encoding).

However, the source code doesn't show the lines in question.
How else can I do it?

Recompilation should not be required, unless you were upgrading to 2.0.0
or something of the sort.

This looks odd, with the \endcsname\space. Can you try to produce a
minimal test document that exhibits the problem? I.e., keep deleting
stuff until the problem goes away.

Try opening the LyX file itself in a text editor, e.g., Notepad (on
Windows) or Kate (on Linux). Then you can find the problematic text and
fix it. The syntax of the file should be intelligible.

Here's the master file preamble for your reference, as I really don't
know which aspects may be causing the problem. (The 'slave' chapter
preambles are almost identical except that they lack the bibliographic
 and appendix portions).

FYI: If these are child documents, then their preambles aren't actually
used during compilation of the whole document. They'd only be used if
you try to compile the chapters as standalone documents.

I first posted this on the latex-community forum, but then realized
that their LyX thread seems to have very low activity. Thanks in
advance for your help and expertise!

I don't really see anything in the preamble that would be likely to
cause this problem. Could you create a simple test document that
 exhibits this issue?

Yes, that's also gone. And this whole mess started when I ended up
reinstalling MiKTeX (and installing the latest version) because I was getting
errors in LyX about wasy fonts.

Not sure if I answered this already -- I think the virtual dog ate one of my

(anywhere, the directory does not matter) and run 'pdflatex --version'. If
MiKTeX spits up some version information, at least we know it is installed. If
Windows says it has no clue what 'pdflatex' is, add the MiKTeX bin directory to
your system path. (I seem to recall pointing you to the PathEdit utility
earlier.)

If pdflatex is present (and on your command path), export a small test document
(preferably a one-liner using article class) in LaTeX (pdflatex) format, open a
DOS prompt in the directory where the .tex file landed, run 'pdflatex
filename.tex' and report any errors. Maybe that will give clues.

Okay, this may be progress. In the Start menu, MiKTeX entry, there
should be a folder labeled Maintenance, and in that a shortcut to an
application that I think is labeled Settings. I seem to recall that
on Win 7 there are actually two of them, with either the program or
folder name including Admin (I'm on Linux right now, so I'm working
from memory). I'm not sure it makes a difference if you're the only
MiKTeX user on the machine, but run the Admin version just to be safe.
On the first tab, click the second button (the label is something like
Update Formats) and then the first button (Refresh FNDB). Then
repeat what you did above and see if the no formats.ini message goes
away and (hopefully) the trivial document compiles.

Interestingly, LyX is also saying (in Document Settings) that all

That's because LyX thinks you don't have LaTeX installed. Once we sort
out your problems with MiKTeX, reconfiguring and restarting LyX should
solve this.

Oh boy. Just to add complicating factors, you've got a 64 bit version
of Win 7. Theoretically 32 bit apps run fine on the 64 bit version.
Less theoretically, installers for 32 bit apps sometimes get confused by
the 64 bit version (which installs them in a different place from where
they think they're being installed). At least I think that's what goes on.

Anyway, before panicking, let's try this. Repeat what you just did, but
instead of left-clicking the Settings icon on the Start menu, right
click and pick run as administrator (wording approximate). Win 7 will
ask you if you're sober (or something to that effect); tell it whatever
it wants to hear. Click the same two buttons in the same order and see
if MiKTeX behaves itself this time.

No, I still get the error message saying formats.ini doesn't exist.

Should I uninstall LyX and MiKTeX and then installing an older version of
MiKTeX? I HAVE successfully exported PDFs from LyX on this computer with its
64-bit Windows 7.

No, I would go with a newer version. The current version is 2.9. I'm
pretty sure I have that installed on Win 7 Home (64 bit) on one machine,
and it works there.

I would suggest installing a minimal version of MiKTeX with the network
installer, and then adding packages as needed. That way, if it's still
broken, you will have expended less time finding out.

Good luck.

Find the MiKTeX directory under C:\Program Files (86) and delete it
manually. Then find the MiKTeX directories under your roving profile
and any other profile (if you refer back to the error message where it
complained about no formats.ini, a bunch of paths were listed there).
Next, I would suggest you install the free version of CCleaner
(http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download). Once that's installed, it
will offer to run itself -- do so, find the tab that cleans the
registry, and use that to get rid of any problem keys (pointing to
now-nonexistent directories). Personally, I always just tell it fix all
the problems it finds. Once you've cleaned the registry, proceed with
reinstalling. You may wish to make a sacrifice to the Computing Gods to
appease them before reinstalling.

Last I knew, Pavel was using gentoo, so perhaps he can help.

But nonetheless, someone on gentoo who did not previously have xetex
support, but who has compiled 2.0.0 already, can add it by acquiring the
xetex binary (however they might do that) and doing ToolsReconfigure in
LyX. There's no compilation setting in LyX for this, as there is, e.g.,
for libx264 support in ffmpeg. LyX has no sort of compilation dependency
upon xetex (there are no headers that it needs, e.g.), but only uses it
as a completely external tool.

Indeed, you could create a script /usr/bin/xe(?:la)?tex whose entire
code was:
#!/bin/bash
exit 0;
and LyX would happily let you use XeTeX. (Not that it would work very
well) All LyX cares is that there is some program called
xe(?:la)?tex in the path, and that is checked during LyX's
configuration process, not during the autotools configuration.

This looks odd, with the \endcsname\space. Can you try to produce a

FYI: If these are child documents, then their preambles aren't actually
used during compilation of the whole document. They'd only be used if
you try to compile the chapters as standalone documents.

I first posted this on the latex-community forum, but then realized
that their LyX thread seems to have very low activity. Thanks in

I don't really see anything in the preamble that would be likely to
cause this problem. Could you create a simple test document that
 exhibits this issue?

Yes, that's also gone. And this whole mess started when I ended up

Not sure if I answered this already -- I think the virtual dog ate one of my

MiKTeX spits up some version information, at least we know it is installed. If
Windows says it has no clue what 'pdflatex' is, add the MiKTeX bin directory to
your system path. (I seem to recall pointing you to the PathEdit utility

Interestingly, LyX is also saying (in Document Settings) that all
document classes are unavailable.
That's because LyX thinks you don't have LaTeX installed. Once we sort
out your problems with MiKTeX, reconfiguring and restarting LyX should
solve this.

I can't find the default format file!

Okay, this may be progress. In the Start menu, MiKTeX entry, there should
be a folder labeled Maintenance, and in that a shortcut to an application
that I think is labeled Settings. I seem to recall that on Win 7 there
are actually two of them, with either the program or folder name including
Admin (I'm on Linux right now, so I'm working from memory). I'm not sure
it makes a difference if you're the only MiKTeX user on the machine, but run
the Admin version just to be safe. On the first tab, click the second
button (the label is something like Update Formats) and then the first
 button (Refresh FNDB).

There's only one version of the Settings application. When I tried what you
described, I got the error message below.

No need to uninstally LyX, but yes, I would uninstall MiKTeX.

Indeed, you could create a script /usr/bin/xe(?:la)?tex whose entire
code was:
#!/bin/bash
exit 0;
and LyX would happily let you use XeTeX. (Not that it would work very
well) All LyX cares is that there is some program called
xe(?:la)?tex in the path, and that is checked during LyX's
configuration process, not during the autotools configuration.

! Extra \endcsname.
 ...s-d=E9di=E9es-aux\endcsname

Is this a known bug ? Any workaround ?

This looks odd, with the \endcsname\space. Can you try to produce a
minimal test document that exhibits the problem? I.e., keep deleting
stuff until the problem goes away.

Try opening the LyX file itself in a text editor, e.g., Notepad (on
Windows) or Kate (on Linux). Then you can find the problematic text and
fix it. The syntax of the file should be intelligible.

Not sure if I answered this already -- I think the virtual dog ate one of my
replies. Anyway, at the risk of being redundant ... Open a DOS prompt

(preferably a one-liner using article class) in LaTeX (pdflatex) format, open a
DOS prompt in the directory where the .tex file landed, run 'pdflatex
.tex' and report any errors. Maybe that will give clues.

I successfully added the MiKTeX bin directory to the system path and
exported a file. Running pdflatex gave this message:
This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-1.40.10
initexmf.exe: No formats.ini exists.
I can't find the default format file!

Interestingly, LyX is also saying (in Document > Settings) that all document
classes are unavailable.

Okay, this may be progress. In the Start menu, MiKTeX entry, there
should be a folder labeled "Maintenance", and in that a shortcut to an
application that I think is labeled "Settings". I seem to recall that
on Win 7 there are actually two of them, with either the program or
folder name including "Admin" (I'm on Linux right now, so I'm working
from memory). I'm not sure it makes a difference if you're the only
MiKTeX user on the machine, but run the Admin version just to be safe.
On the first tab, click the second button (the label is something like
"Update Formats") and then the first button ("Refresh FNDB"). Then
repeat what you did above and see if the "no formats.ini" message goes
away and (hopefully) the trivial document compiles.

Interestingly, LyX is also saying (in Document > Settings) that all
document classes are unavailable.
That's because LyX thinks you don't have LaTeX installed. Once we sort
out your problems with MiKTeX, reconfiguring and restarting LyX should
solve this.

There's only one version of the Settings application. When I tried what you
described, I got the error message below.

Repeat what you just did, but
instead of left-clicking the Settings icon on the Start menu, right
click and pick "run as administrator" (wording approximate). Win 7 will
ask you if you're sober (or something to that effect); tell it whatever
it wants to hear.

I did a quick search and found a couple of posts (auf Deutsch, so it's a
gamble whether I understood them correctly) by someone who experienced
the same problem. If my very rusty German served me, reinstalling
MiKTeX solved it for him.

Should I uninstall LyX and MiKTeX

No need to uninstally LyX, but yes, I would uninstall MiKTeX.

and then installing an older version of MiKTeX?
No, I would go with a newer version. The current version is 2.9. I'm
pretty sure I have that installed on Win 7 Home (64 bit) on one machine,
and it works there.

I would suggest installing a minimal version of MiKTeX with the network
installer, and then adding packages as needed. That way, if it's still
broken, you will have expended less time finding out.

Good luck.

OK, even uninstalling doesn't work right. The error message says, "The
operation could not be completed for the following reasons: The IniTeXMF
executable could not be found.".

But nonetheless, someone on gentoo who did not previously have xetex
support, but who has compiled 2.0.0 already, can add it by acquiring the
xetex binary (however they might do that) and doing Tools>Reconfigure in
LyX. There's no compilation setting in LyX for this, as there is, e.g.,
for libx264 support in ffmpeg. LyX has no sort of compilation dependency
upon xetex (there are no headers that it needs, e.g.), but only uses it
as a completely external tool.

Indeed, you could create a script /usr/bin/xe(?:la)?tex whose entire
code was:
#!/bin/bash
exit 0;
and LyX would happily let you use XeTeX. (Not that it would work very
well) All LyX cares is that there is some program called
"xe(?:la)?tex" in the path, and that is checked during LyX's
configuration process, not during the autotools configuration.
