If I comment out the last line in your preamble (the line below my
signature), then I don't get an error.  Do you need this line as part of
the MWE / eventual use case?

Hi,

I am not fully sure what it is exactly what you are after. If it is the 
one attached, then the "trick" is to indent (e.g. with tab) standard and 
quote environments.

Hi,

    Using LyX 2.3.1 and debian Jessie, I have been trying to to insert
quotes inside an enumeration list with very little success.  The
instructions in the Userguide are opaque.  The format I am trying to
achieve is shown below.

1. x x

    x x

   qqq

   qqq

   x

etc.

    There appears to be problems with maintaing the protected status of
both horizontal and vertical spacing.

 Any suggestions as to how to achieve this> Please
