I wonder if doing 'ldd' on the 'lyx' binary could give helpful errors on a
potential problem.

It is on by default these days.

If your operating system is able to search on content (ie spotlight on MacOS),
the following once worked for me to locate the personal dictionary...
1) add an intentionally misspelled to your personal dictionary via LyX
2) update content search database
3) search for mis-spelled word

Please, don’t top post!

IMO, you have two options:

1. encrypt the mysteries of enchant and find it yourself, as LyX is not
responsible for this operation.
Read the doc here: https://abiword.github.io/enchant/

2. Switch to a less intransparent beast and use e.g. Hunspell.

Look at Tools > Preferences > Paths. There is a path specified for
Hunspell Dictionaries. Check whether the dictionaries are in that very
path.

I used to add "plenty" of words. And there are available from
spell checking to spell checking

Thus, I really have dictionaries, but I cannot find where!

Patrick,

Then you apparently have no personal word list/dictionary. On my system I
have:
$ find . -name pwl*.dict
./.lyx/pwl_american.dict
./.lyx/pwl_english.dict

When you check spelling in a document have you ever added a new word that's
not in the default dictionary? I believe that creates and uses a pwl; others
will tell you if I'm wrong.

Good luck,

It is the pwl_x.dict file, where x is the language, under

E.g. pwl_english.dict

pwl means personal word list, btw.

Okay, after adding a word to the personal dictionary *and* closing

Hello Patrick,

the answer depends on the spell checker engine you’re using.

The options are aspell, hunspell, enchant and the Apple speller. Not all are
available on all platforms. Please check your settings and tell which one
you’re using.

and it should show you the location of all dictionaries.
