Adding Insets
Hey guys, I want to add a boxed inset into my LyX document, an example to illustrate the main text. How should I go about doing this? Output should look something like (looks best in a fixed font): ___ |This is all normal | |text.--| |This is |This is | |all |the | |normal |example. | |text. |This is...| |This is |__| |all normal text. | |This is all normal | |text. This is all | |normal text. This | |is all normal text.| |___| I'm almost certain I've asked this question before, but I can't find and can't remember the answer, and would really appreciate someone helping me out. Cheers, Dan

Focus not returned to text after insert
Using 1.4.0svn of a couple of days ago, whenever I try to insert anything that is on the first level of the Insert menu (i.e. 'Insert Footnote' as opposed to 'Insert Note ...') using the keyboard, focus is not returned to the text window after the item is inserted. For example, were I to use 'M-i f' to insert a footnote and then typed 'f', the File menu would be opened. In addition to this, and possibly a separate issue, if I then press the Meta key (Alt) again, to return the cursor to the text area (as happens even under normal LyX conditions) the menus are no longer selected but neither is the text area usable. Pressing keys on the keyboard does nothing. Dan

This was intended to be posted in lyx-devel (which is where it now resides). Any replies would be better directed there (using the message posted there). Thank you (and sorry), Dan

Re: double superscript a lyx bug?
Sven Schreiber wrote: Hi, I just ran into the same thing reported by Bo Peng a short while ago -- if in math you make an explicit superscript but also append a ' as a shortcut for prime (= matrix transpose sign here), latex complains about double superscript. I know how to workaround, but I read somewhere that lyx tries to produce correct latex files (absent any ERT). So, is this a bug by official standards? LyX is creating a correct LaTeX file. If you try the same formula in a .tex file, LaTeX will complain. It's just not valid LaTeX, so you need to make it $a^{*\prime)$. This is not a LyX issue. Dan

Latest pre-release version
Hey, I'm just writing to confirm that 1.4.0pre3 is the latest pre-release version (I've seen some mention of more recent versions), as I want to keep Gentoo ebuilds as current as is possible. Thanks, Dan

Starting Enumerate environments from greater than 1.
How does one do this? I know the LaTeX is \setcounter{enumi}{26}, but this doesn't work unless this is actually in the Enumerate environment, which results in the output: 1. First item 26. Second item 27. Third item and so on. Is there a way I can start Enumerate from greater than 1. within LyX? Cheers, Dan

Using Curly Brackets in Text
The subject says it all. I'm looking to do something that'll look like this: Not blah Blah } Blah } These lines contain blah Blah } Not blah The three }s should be replaced by one big curly bracket. I have tried doing this using a Maths environment, but I could never convince it to work... Thanks in advance, Dan

Horizontal Rule
I'm looking to place a horizontal rule in a document I'm currently working on. However, the standard horizontal rule is ugly (it just goes from one side of the page to the other). How can I tell LyX to put in a line that isn't as long (and what's a typographically good length to have it?)? Thanks in advance, Dan
Re: Horizontal Rule
The Elements of Typographic Style, by Robert Bringhurst, uses horizontal rules only sparingly, but they extend across the type block. Of The Elements, the great Hermann Zapf wrote, I wish to see this book become the Typographers' Bible. That's as may be, but I'm currently using LyX to recreate an old book, in which there /is/ a horizontal rule. :p Evidently they hadn't read The Elements of Typographic Style in 1830... ;) Dan

Putting Other Stuff On The Title Page
Hi list, I'm currently creating a document using the 'book' class. I have a disclaimer of sorts that I want to put below the Title and Author fields on the first page of the document (as it looks a bit lonely all by itself on the second page). I'm guessing this is a job for ERTman, so was wondering if anyone would oblige me by telling me what to put in? And, yes, I'll get around to buying a LaTeX reference sooner or later... :P Cheers, Dan
Creating DocBook stuff using LyX
I've just managed to get the job of putting together the documentation for a SourceForge project, and it would be exceedingly helpful if I were to be able to do it on LyX. Unfortunately, it requires DocBook format stuff, and I don't know how (or if it's possible) to create that using LyX. Any elucidation would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Dan

Links Within Documents
One thing I've noticed some documents being able to do (namely the Beamer User Guide) is have clickable links in the ToC which automagically move the view to the appropriate section, which I thought was rather nifty. I'm guessing these are in an extra package, and I was wondering what I would have to add to me preamble to be able to do this in my own documents? Thanks in advance, Dan

Re: More about foreign languages - No!
Please try with your Lyx and see if it is true for you also, then give me the response, and thanks a lot in advance! What you in fact need to do is ensure that any of the items that are in the wrong language. Select everything that needs to be in Portueguese and go to Edit Text Style. Choose the correct language from the Language drop box. This works for me... Dan

Re: Caption and graphics within the same paragraph?!
I was wondering if it is possible to put the graphics centered within a float and the caption justified. Every time I change the paragraph parameter of the caption to justified it turns automatically to centered as the graphic. I presume that you don't want the graphics and caption on separate lines within the caption. If you do, then just hit enter once before you insert the graphics. If that's the case, I'd be interested to hear why, because there doesn't seem to be any good reason not to have them on separate lines... Dan

Presentations using LyX
I've read quite a lot about using LyX to create presentations, along with such words as Beamer and FoilTeX being thrown around. I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to explain how LyX can be used in such a way, or point me to a website which would do the same? Cheers, Dan

Bugs in 1.4.0pre2
All the developers will be glad to hear that this isn't actually a bug report! :P One of the developers is likely to say this sooner or later (and I've seen it said in a few individual bug reports), but I thought I'd add this now, to save them time (scarce resources being what they are). Bug reports are very useful, and the developers are most grateful for you finding them and reporting them. However, your reports can be twice as useful to them if, before reporting them, you search for them at http://bugzilla.lyx.org. If you don't find your problem on there, then create a new bug there as well as posting up on here (or, better, lyx-devel@lists.lyx.org). This saves a lot of time for the developers as well as ensuring that your problem doesn't get lost in the ether. Obviously, if you aren't sure, dump a message up here and someone will help you out. Hoping he's not sounding too self-righteous, Dan
