Install lyx 2.3.6 on Mac OSx

2022-11-14 Thread Dave Ahlgren
I upgraded to Lyx 2.3.6 version from 2.1.x on two Intel Macs over the
weekend—one running Mojave and the other OS Vsn 12.6.1. Lyx ran without a
hitch on the Mojave machine. The Vsn 12 machine would not convert template
files so I could not access my old documents. The error message said that
lyx2lyx failed to convert the templates. Problem was solved by adding execute
provilege to the lyx2lyx app that was installed with the new lyx version. Do
this as follows:

Open a terminal and navigate to the lyx2lyx directory: cd
/Applications/lyx.app/Contents/Resources/lyx2lyx

Then enter the command chmod +x lyx2lyx

Hope this helps someone to save some time.

Getting the Latex Europhysics Letters Template to Work on Lyx for Mac

2016-09-22 Thread Dr Dave Forrester
Dear Experts and Gurus.

Thank you very much for all your help in the past.

Recently, I submitted a manuscript to Europhysics Letters, and received the
reply that I must re-submit the paper in the required format, which is a
Latex Template given at

EPL LATEX package

Some of the major publishers now have their own Lyx templates for submitted
manuscripts.

After a few fudges, I realised that I did not have the skills to transform
this Latex Template into a Lyx one.

Coud you please help me in converting this Latex Template into a Lyx
Template? It is a two column format as you often see for various journals.
It would be a good thing to include with future shipments of Lyx, as I note
that a template for Elsevier has been included.

Best wishes,

David Forrester

p.s. OS is El Capitan

Problem with PDF Preview

2016-07-20 Thread Dr Dave Forrester
Dear Lyx Experts,

Thanks very much in advance for your help.

I recently updated Lyx only to find out that I should have updated MacTex
first. I downloaded the latest MacTex and then found that the Preview
Button was greyed out. From the Lyx Users Archive, I found out how to
access in the Preferences, File Handling > File Formats; I selected Latex
(pdflatex) in the Format drop down box and then found that the option of
pdflatex was not available in either of the drop down boxes for 'With TeX
Fonts' and 'With non-tex Fonts'. I saved this page with the result that the
Preview button became operable, but when I click on it, all I get is a tab
in Safari with MathHTML, and not the beautiful PDF output that you usually
get opened up in Preview miraculously before your eyes, as has happened so
many times before.

Would greatly appreciate your assistance, as you do need the beautiful
Preview output to send to the publishers.

Best wishes,

David Forrester

However, the instructions were tested on a number of machines

For me, interest waned when last time I upgraded.

The latest LyX 1.6.x upgrade broke the whole thing (not sure which).
I never figured out why.

So, I just waited a bit till LyX 2 for the module integration of Sweave.
It just worked out of the box for me.
I'd recommend it to all Win LyX-Sweave users.

Big thanks to Yihui and the other devels working on this.

Lyx setup for ASA style (Americal Sociological Associoation)

2011-11-03 Thread Dave

Dear all,

I would love to use Lyx for my Phd thesis
and academic papers but I am close to giving up
as I don't manage to adapt it to my needs.
I would like to use Lyx in combination with
Bibdesk or Zotero, and use an
ASA document style (American Sociological Association).
This includes in-text references (e.g. (Giddens:22)),
the bibliography formatting, the overall text structure etc.
I was neither able to find appropriate document templates
nor to adapt the existing ones. Is there any not-too-difficult way of
setting up Lyx for the ASA style without diving into the details of Latex?
I am using Mac OS 10.7.2 and Lyx 2.0.1.

Thanking you,

David

 The real question is whether there's a LaTeX document class or set of
 packages for this, and it looks as if there is not. (I can't find one on
 CTAN.) So I'm afraid there is no way to do this without writing such a
 class. But really, someone ought to do so. Maybe you don't want to be

 And we're all here to help you if you run into problems. It's not as

Thanks for the reply, Richard!

The good news is: I managed to adapt the standard
templates using some \bibpunct[:]{(}{)}{,}{a}{}{;}
commands and other local adjustments. This is sufficient
for me to start working and to stick to Lyx after
all. I am sure more formatting issues will come up in
the course of my work and who knows, maybe be
then I will be able to write a whole new class for the
ASA document style.

Numbering the rows of a table

2011-04-18 Thread CLOSE Dave
I admit I'm a newbie with LyX, but this seems like such a simple
operation. I read that LyX is especially good with lists, numbered,
itemized, etc. Well, I need that in a table. I want one column of my
table to contain the number of that row. For example,

 +--+--+
 | item | head |
 +--+--+
 |   1  | text |
 +--+--+
 |   2  | text |
 +--+--+
 |   3  | text |
 +--+--+

The numbers should automatically update if I add or delete a row in the
table. I am astounded that I can't easily find a way to do this with
LyX. What am I missing?

Thanks for your suggestion.

That's certainly a possibility; however, I'm not touching the computer at all,
and am pretty careful about touching the mouse's middle button. It
seems that deleted text suddenly appears after a save or spellcheck,
sometimes the same text in multiple locations, suggesting it may be
happening by itself. I never see the text getting inserted, or the document
scrolling to the insertion position, I just find it when I read through the
document.

Random text pasting on Mac

2011-01-17 Thread Dave Bursik
I'm using LyX 1.6.8 on my MacBooks (OS X 10.6.6) and having a strange
text corruption problem.

Words and phrases that I've cut or copied magically reappear in other
parts of my document. Sometimes they're neatly inserted into another
sentence (difficult to spot), other times in the middle of a word (easier
to spot with spellchecking).

For example, a string like In other words might morph into Isome
other text I cut elsewheren other words. I had a hunch that it might
somehow be related to file saving, so I disabled the autosave feature,
and the corruption seems to happen less frequently but it still occurs.

I've also had the cursor randomly jump to another location in the text
causing me to type into the wrong place. I've noticed the cursor jumping
in other applications, but not the pasting problem - that seems specific
to LyX.

I'm using a multi-button mouse instead of the built-in trackpad, and
I do try to be careful about stray mouse clicks that could inadvertently
paste text. (I also use an external keyboard and a pair of external monitors
on both MacBooks.)

I've searched the web and various forums for this problem, but it's
difficult to describe succinctly. If any other Mac users have
experienced this or a similar problem, I'd appreciate hearing
about it (hopefully with a solution).

Sidewaystable infinite loop

2010-02-21 Thread Dave Dixon

Greetings,

I'm running LyX 1.6.4 under Ubuntu 9.10 with TeXLive. Don't know how to get
TeXLive version, but tex --version gives me

TeX 3.141592 (Web2C 7.5.6)
kpathsea version 3.5.6

I've imported a TeX document that worked great under MikTeX/TeXCenter on
winders. It has a big table that has to be printed landscape and has footnotes
so it has to be in a minipage. So, what worked previously was

   \begin{sidewaystable}
   \caption{A Table}
   \begin{minipage}{0.77\linewidth}
   \begin{tabular}{ m{1.22in} d{3.2} d{3.2} d{3.2} m{0.5in} m{0.5in} d{3.2}
d{3.2} d{3.2}}
  ...
   \end{tabular}
   \label{table:a_table}
   \end{minipage}
   \end{sidewaystable}

LyX converted this to

  %
  \begin{sidewaystable}
  \caption{A Table}
  \end{sidewaystable}
  %
  \begin{minipage}[c]{0.77\linewidth}%

\begin{tabular}{m{1.32in}d{3.2}d{3.2}d{3.2}{\raggedleft}m{0.7in}{\raggedleft}m{0.7in}d{3.2}d{3.2}d{3.2}}
  \hline
 ...

which, of course, doesn't work at all since the minipage and tabular are
outside the sidewaystable now.

BUT - I'm able to cut the table in the WYSIWYG and paste it into the
sidewaystable so it looks right in the TeX window, but then LyX goes
into an infinite loop and I have to kill the process. Any effort to
edit the recovered document has the same outcome.

Meanwhile, if I put a barebones table in a sidewaystable and a minipage,
it prints on the bottom of the page, not sideways, and running off the
right margin.

Workarounds?

   \begin{tabular}{ m{1.22in} d{3.2} d{3.2} d{3.2} m{0.5in} m{0.5in} d{3.2}
d{3.2} d{3.2}}
  ...
   \end{tabular}
   \label{table:a_table}
   \end{minipage}
   \end{sidewaystable}

LyX converted this to

  %
  \begin{sidewaystable}
  \caption{A Table}
  \end{sidewaystable}
  %
  \begin{minipage}[c]{0.77\linewidth}%

\begin{tabular}{m{1.32in}d{3.2}d{3.2}d{3.2}>{\raggedleft}m{0.7in}>{\raggedleft}m{0.7in}d{3.2}d{3.2}d{3.2}}
  \hline
 ...

which, of course, doesn't work at all since the minipage and tabular are
outside the sidewaystable now.

Workarounds?

text size in mac version

2009-09-17 Thread Dave Garbutt
HI,

I have an annoying frustrating problem-

On the Mac OS - X version I was looking for a shortcut and typed crtl+-
several times (don't ask me why, I was in lemming like panic at the time)

this shortcut I cannot find in the Lyx doc or the OS X doc at
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1343

The effect is to shrink the text size in the document view (but not in
typeset output)
ctrl++ does not reverse it. Every document I open in Lyx is now unreadable..

Do not try to reproduce this unless you know the solution... !!!

I will be very grateful for any help,

LyX Stopped Responding

2009-08-04 Thread Dave Jarvis
Here is what I did (with two separate instances of LyX running):

1. Opened a .lyx file (a KOMA letter).
2. Used the keyboard to jump to the end of the letter (note: the letter had
a forced next page).
3. Started to highlight text (using shift and the cursor keys).
4. Hit shift-home (or shift-control-page-up) to try and highlight text to
the top of the letter.

LyX stopped responding.

So is it true that the float widgets must remain left-aligned in the LyX view in
order not to cause problems?

Re: page numbering

 I am preparing project report ...i want to number abstract and
 acknowledgment, acronyms, etc... in roman and normal numbers (arabic) for
 chapters ...How to do that

 From other threads i came to know abt \frontmatter \mainmatter \backmatter
 .. but i am not using koma-script..normal report document class

\Xmatter definitions are not specific to Koma-script, but are restricted to
books

You don't need that, though. Just add

\pagenumbering{roman}

in ERT where you want pages to start roman and

\pagenumbering{arabic}

to reset counter and go to arabic

Re: Use in US government agencies

2009-02-05 Thread Dave Hewitt
  Can anyone tell me is LyX is currently being used in any US Government
  agency? I am particularly interested to know if it is used in the USEPA.

I doubt it very much. The federal government -- and almost all lower
 levels, too -- are still stuck with Word. Can't even get them to use OO.o
 and save documents as .odt.

In general, we're locked into M$ stuff through our enterprise agreements. But
that doesn't mean individuals can't use other stuff for their work as long as
the products look the way the wheels want them to. :)

 all in plain text, it wouldn't take that much band width... What do
 you think?

Why not the Wiki -- wiki.lyx.org ? Easy to use.

Example CVs give error

2009-01-29 Thread Dave Woodfall

I have been using lyx for letters without problem, but now want to write a
CV. The problem is I always get an error when loading the example CVs.

'The layout requested by this file xxx.layout is unusable...'

This is with lyx 1.6.1. I have just installed texlive thinking this might
fix it but no change.

What do I need to do to use these CV examples?

Way behind on upgrading (Alt Installer), need some clarification

2008-11-21 Thread Dave Hewitt
I stuck with LyX version 1.5.5 for a while now because of a big project I had
going (call it superstition). I'm ready to upgrade, but I think I'll stick with
1.5.7 for a bit longer (ditto). I'm on Win XP and have a working install of
MikTeX 2.7 (just updated). I have used Uwe's AltInstaller for all installations
and updates until this point. I am looking to get an upgrade of ImageMagick,
Ghostscript, Aspell, and GSView, but would prefer to leave MikTeX alone. I just
read through the AltInstaller documentation and Wiki stuff again, but wanted to
be sure --

If I run the Update Installer variant to 1.5.6 and then run the Complete
Installer variant for 1.5.7, will that do what I want?

Re: Examples of Modern and European CV classes

2008-09-19 Thread Dave Hewitt
 Do you have a sample of a cv using this class, that might give
 me an idea of what goes in the preamble and how it works?

There are a number of example LyX files posted on the Wiki page. Is that what
you mean? There's even one TeX file, which should be readable regardless of
LyX version or moderncv version.

If you're looking for a more current LyX file that takes advantage of the
updates to moderncv, I'm no help.

Re: bibtex issues with format of authors

2008-09-19 Thread Dave Hewitt
 One additional tip...
 If you are likely to use the aliases in many documents, you can put a
 list of the \defcitealias commands in a tex file and then use Insert-
 File-Child Document in LyX.

I noticed that you can put the \defcitealias in the main document or the
Preamble. Both work, so I guess it depends on what suits you. The child
document tip is great too.

 Thanks for putting this on the wiki.

Ditto. Worked like a charm for me. It might be worth making that t in
cite_t_alias bold... I thought it was a typo on Stephen's part and it derailed
me for 5 minutes.  :)

 I have tried downloading some of the modern CV examples on the Wiki
 (http://wiki.lyx.org/Examples/ModernCVClassIssues), but they won't
 compile so I assume they are only illustrating specific issues .

Those issues were identified and solutions derived based on LyX 1.5.2 on WinXP
with an older version of moderncv. I noticed that someone made a note on the
Wiki that the moderncv maintainer updated the package to avoid the dropped
labels for the first entries in sections. I have not messed with the new
version of moderncv in any newer version of LyX to check the other items. If
someone does, please post so we can update the Wiki page.

This link does not work for me. Can you give the date so we can track down the
post. This would be a useful tip to put on the Wiki... I've always gotten by
in these situations somehow but not in any correct way.

Gmane apparently messes with links when you use its posting mechanism, but I
am also unsure how and why. In this post your link was again messed up (and I
deleted it).

Regardless, I got the good link and the solution is nice. Thanks!

Re: Excel graphs into Lyx

2008-08-07 Thread Dave Hewitt

This won't be terribly helpful, but my short answer would be that there is no
way that qualifies even as good, let alone best, for most figures. I hadn't
made a figure in Excel in a long time, but I just did to muck around. I
couldn't figure out how to save the figure (chart) by itself as an image. I
saved the worksheet as a web page to force the chart into its own image
file, but it was a GIF. How did you get them into JPGs? Is this Office 2007,
the new and unimproved Office? Either way, the image that came out was not
good and couldn't be resized in an editor - forget the reason why, something
about scalable, vectorization...

One thing I've done in a pinch is to make the image fill as much of the
screen as possible and use Print Screen, then paste that image into an
editor like GIMP. This will work to get decent resolution for simple
stuff, but I wouldn't do it for publications or any final product.

 By default, latex positions images automatically depending on space
 and this behaviour can be corrected ... how would you do it in lyx?

See Document - Settings - Float Placement, and the User's Guide under Float

Using a network printer

2008-03-17 Thread Dave Wood
How do I set up Lyx to use a network printer? At the moment I can print by
viewing as pdf in kpdf which sees my printer. I would like to be able to
print direct from Lyx though, as I sometimes want to print old files and
not have to preview them first.

I have tried using the cups printer name, the server address:port etc to no
avail.

Classes unavailable on Slackware

2008-01-16 Thread Dave Wood
Hi, I've tried out a few versions of Lyx but always seem to have many
doc classes unavailable. There are too many to list and there are some
that I want to try. Heres a screen shot to show you which ones I mean.

http://www.unrealize.co.uk/snapshot11.png

Any ideas how to get these working? I have managed to install and get
a cv class working but I've no idea about these others. Is there a lot
missing from my latex/tetex install perhaps?

Any help would be great.

Using Slackware current, Lyx 1.5.3, tetex 3.0

Re: Spell check on the fly?

2007-12-11 Thread Dave Hewitt

Is there any chance that LyX in the future will support spell check on fly,
where each misspelled word is underlined with a red line in the editor if
its incorrectly spelled?

I concur that inline spellchecking is not helpful during writing.

Have a look at the User's Guide as well, which explains that LyX simply
implements an external program to do the spellchecking. It may happen in
the future that LyX will support a program that provides inline
spellchecking, but for now it's Aspell for Windows users (and probably most
everyone else). Looking at the Aspell documentation (http://aspell.net/),
there is no mention of a desire for inline spellchecking, so if you want
that you might want to look at another program and work on implementing
support for it in LyX.

 Then you don't have all the extra goodies, such as automatic conversion

Honestly, you might find that answers to your many questions come much
faster if you start regularly using the Help - menu in LyX. The User's
Guide and Embedded Objects manual are helpful here, and they're very good.

(Incidentally, in checking the EO manual just now I think I found a bug

With the User's Guide open and the TOC displayed, an attempt to open Help

buffer, this seems to be related to the Dummy Docs opened with the EO
manual. Can anyone confirm?
