Subject: Extra long chapter title causing problems in TOC
To: LyX Users <lyx-users@lists.lyx.org>

Dear all,

Could you kindly help me with a tip on how to insert a
carriage-return/line-break in my table of contents, for a very long title?
I'm using Lyx 2.2.0

The problem text is below (and neither \\ nor \newline works) :

\addcontentsline{toc}{chapter}{How Goan Identity and India's Independence
\\ Put Britain in a Diplomatic Dilemma}
\addtocontents{toc}{Victor Rangel-Ribeiro \par}

Kindly cc your reply to my address too. Many thanks,

Re: Problem with table....

2017-04-19 Thread Frederick FN Noronha फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
Thank you so much, Paul. That was so helpful.
If you don't mind me asking an elementary question -- how does one make the
'language' usage consistent throughout a file?
We're one of the few serious publishing houses (doing 12-16 books a year)
that uses Lyx for all its typesetting. Based in Goa, India. Would really
appreciate any help or pointers from anyone on how to make our books more
neat looking, specially with attractive chapter pages.

Thanks, Frederick

Query about table of contents in Lyx

2015-09-20 Thread Frederick FN Noronha फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
Some of my chapter titles are really long. I'd like to break them into two
lines (at a point where I want it, without the line being justified).

Can someone kindly let me know how this is done using the ERT for creating
the table of contents?

Many thanks! FN

 Frederick,

 I've done this for several books. From my experience the answer to your
 questions are:

 * Conversion
 1. Export your file to LyXHTML
 2. Using your favorite text editor (I use vi), delete the first line of
 the file (something like ?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8?) and
 save as type HTML.
 3. The file can now be imported into Sigil
   (http://web.sigil.googlecode.com/git/files/OEBPS/Text/introduction.html
 ),
   which saves files in epub format.

 * Epub standards
 Sigil includes the FlightCrew validator, and also a link to validate
 stylesheets with W3C.

 * Testing the epub
 I don't know of any site for testing, other than
   http://validator.idpf.org/, which as far as I know does exactly the
   same as the Sigil validator. The real problem is that no e-reader
   supports the standards completely and exactly, so you need to test
   your epub on several readers. I use Nook, Calibre and FBreader.

 * LyX development
 I'll leave this to developers.

 Without images, the conversion is straightforward, with the main
 problem being how to handle footnotes: as epub is reflowable, the
 concept of footnote does not exist, so you will have to decide how to
 handle them. Sigil gives you the tools to implement any solution you
 decide on, but it may involve a lot of detailed editing.

 Images complicate the conversion. Do you want small images in a fixed
 location in the text? That is fairly easy. So is putting all the images
 at the end of a chapter (or at the end of the book). But if you want
 clickable links to images, and a clickable link to return you to the
 page you were on, it can become very complicated, and involve a lot of
 hand editing. But again, Sigil has all the tools you need for this.

 I hope this helps,

 Les

Where the error message shows up

2014-04-04 Thread Frederick FN Noronha फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
Can someone help and instruct me on this, or kindly see if there's a bug in
the software?

I made a mistake in adding an entry into the Table Of Contents.
Instead of writing
\addcontentsline{toc}{subsection}{Institutional repositories}
I wrote
\addcontentsline{toc}{Institutional repositories}

The {subsection} was missing, so it was my error and the software got
understandably confused!

But here is the problem --

When the error message came, it started to point to all different sections
of the text. Not the relevant one.

Why was this happening? Can this be sharpened, pls? FN

 Hullo Frederick,

 Back at the start of October, you asked on the list about semi-automatic
 indexing. Richard Heck suggested this was the kind of thing that could be
 done with a script. It occurred to me that I might be able to elaborate the
 find--replace script of the pLyX system
 (http://wiki.lyx.org/Examples/PLyXSystem) to perform this function. I've now
 done so. The last section of the document describing the workings of the
 find--replace script describes how to use it for semi-automatic indexing.

 As with all pLyX scripts, it is used from within the LyX GUI and is
 activated by clicking on toolbar buttons. You fill a custom inset with the
 terms you want to look for (and how you want them to appear in the index),
 and the script chews through the list item-by-item looking through the
 document for occurrences of those terms and attaching an index inset to each
 occurrence.

 The main problem in setting up the pLyX system is defining two new file
 formats and converters. Otherwise it's just a case of distributing files to
 folders. The documentation accompanying the system, at the link given, I
 hope describes what to do clearly.

Any idea why this could be happening?

Is it due to a lack of space on my hard disk? Ive' tried clearing some

Tks for any tips and pointers that you could offer. Many thanks! FN

For Lyx Users: index

2013-10-04 Thread Frederick FN Noronha फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
Please could you help me with this?

In the index, I'm adding:
resorts|see{beeach resorts}

And what I get is
resorts, see {eeach resorts}191

OR
resorts|see beeach resorts
and
resorts, see beach resorts191

QUESTION:
How do I leave out the page number?
Why do I need to misspell the word to get 'beach' correctly spelt?

Thanks in advance, FN

Is it possible to have some semi-automated tool for creating indexes in
Lyx? Something like TExtract http://www.Texyz.com -- it could allow the

 Does ERT help? I know little about indexes so I won't be able to help,
 but Jurgen points out that |see has never been officially supported
 outside ERT ( see http://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/8786)

 I got the see xxx construct to work by enclosing the argument in ERT
 braces. IIn your case, I would write:
 resorts|seeERT{ beach resortsERT}

 In other words, both braces are inside ERT insets, and everyting
 (including the two ERT insets) is inside an IDX inset.

 Hope it helps,

 Stefano

Resetting footnote numbering after every chapter...

2013-08-09 Thread Frederick FN Noronha फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
Could someone kindly tell me how to reset my footnote numbers (Memoire
class book) after every chapter? As of now, I'm getting continuous
chapter-numbering for the whole book.

Secondly, is there some way to use symbols for a book which has very many
footnotes? (The problem is that the footnote symbols repeats ... and is not
being accepted.) Kindly cc me in your reply. Many thanks! FN
