underbar is depreciated in modern typography - are you certain you want
underbar?

 vertical alignment gets all weird.

 Thanks!

Problem with hyperref.

2007-09-05 Thread Martin A. Hansen
G'day all

I want all my crossrefs to be turned into hyperrefs - and in LyX 1.4 I
believe I just put:

\usepackage{hyperref}
\usepackage{hypcol}

in preamble.

But now I am trapped on a Mac (LyX 1.5.1) and here I get err:

You meant to type ## instead of #, right?
Or maybe a } was forgotten somewhere earlier, and things
are all screwed up? I'm going to assume that you meant ##.

I would have expected an err about hyperref package could not load or
something ...

If an URL contains an anchor # then something inside LyX breaks when using
hyperref!

Then there must be something specific in my doc that causes this err. I

Merge documentation into one doc!

2007-09-05 Thread Martin A. Hansen
We have discussed this before ...

I wanted to find out how to adjust appendixes to replace A, B, C with
Appendix A, Appendix B, Appendix C. Etc. In LyX 1.4 you did that with some
ERT, but now with LyX 1.5 there is some fancy red appendix box and perhaps
another way to do what I wanted. So I headed to the docs ... Horrible
experience! I had to open 6, six, S-I-X different documents to search for
the information I wanted (not counting the introduction)!

How about a little merging - LyX should be pretty good at that, yes?

:o)

Martin

PS. In the mean time I decided just to use A, B, and C for my appendices.

 Okay. ~/lib/lib/libQt*

Sometimes you can't use ~ (tilde). Maybe use the /the/full/path/to/lib.

Maybe don't use ~/lib for prefix for the Qt installation, but use ~/qt4 as
 that may make more sense.

 Okay. ~/lib/lib/libQt*

Sometimes you can't use ~ (tilde). Maybe use the /the/full/path/to/lib.

Maybe don't use ~/lib for prefix for the Qt installation, but use ~/qt4 as
 that may make more sense.

qt4 dir?

2007-08-29 Thread Martin A. Hansen
I never get that --with-qt4-dir= right.

I have compiled and installed qt-mac-opensource-src-4.3.1 with prefex=~/lib
- so what --with-qt4-dir does lyx want?

This problem have annoyed my time and time again both on Debian and now on
Mac.

Actually, I did expand the ~ but still using --with-qt-dir=full/path/lib or
full/path/lib/lib dosn't do the trick ...

No, you *need* to compile with pdflatex to use pdfpages.

Re: How can I enable Show changes in output

I am not entirely certain what you are trying to do.

Track changes works by enabling track changes to a document, and changes
are subsequently tracked and can be displayed. Now, if you have two
documents, and would like to see the changes between them - that is not what
track changes do - and I don't think it can be tweaked into doing that
AFAIK.

I'm happily surprized that I got so much feedback about this.

Beginning from now on, the manual has a version number, according to
LyX's version numbering scheme, to separate different versions.

The just released version 1.4.3-0 contains the bugfixes and annotations
I received since my first announcement.
(The most notable change is the description of what happens when you
don't set an Inner Box for boxes.)

You can download the new manual version from here:
http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/DocumentationDevelopment#Extended-Insets

The Wiki page does now also reflect that you need to download the
RAR-archive file with the images used in the document to compile the
LyX-file.

peculiar over-write options ???

Exporting a lyx file to latex (plain) I am presented with a popup box:

file.EPS already exists.
do you want to overwrite?

and then I can choose three options:

1 overwrite
2 overwrite all
3 cancel export

Now, why is there no dont overwrite option???

pstoedit does need an postscript file. What is wrong with Inscape

perhaps they'll include this in a future release so users won't

Would it be appropriate to add it to the list of external insets, if more
sophisticated
export scripting is requitred ?
ipe files could be added this way too I guess.

Anyone with experience in pdf2rtf conversion?

2006-08-31 Thread Martin A. Hansen

I am still so disappointed by lyx-word conversion so I was looking at
pdf2rtf converters. There appear to be several commercial ones and some open
source ones.

Anybody knows how well these works?

I am in particular interested in getting body text, sections, lists,
figures, references, tables and footnotes correct (in that order).

(latex2rtf makes a horrible job imho - citations gets fubar)

i know the tricks for latex2rtf, but somehow the citation numbering in the

Usually, running View-DVI in advance of latex2rtf solves the problem.

the bottom menubar for math and tables should appear automagically when in

 E) type third lineenter
 F) click between d l of second line
 G) cursor right over to the end of line and pres Ctrl-enter
 H) click between d l of second line
 I) cursor right over to the end of line
 J) cursor right once more (to take you past the Ctrl-enter)
 K) type a
 L) recognize that you now have for the second line:
 second lineaCtrl-enter

 the expected result was:
 second lineCtrl-entera

note that even though the cursor is on the third line (second line of
the enumerated item #2) any character you type at this point ends up on
 the second line.

Also happens on WinXP.

my observations correspond exactly to this thread - "input not placed
correctly after linebreak"

This one I can't confirm on Lyx/Mac 1.4.2...

Re: please consolidate the documentation

2006-07-19 Thread Martin A. Hansen

once again - pdf files are for printing and reading - not for reading
online. printing the documentation may give you a nice book to keep under
the pillow, but it prevents you from seeing how lyx formatting is done,
using cross refereces etc. and i think that lyx is an extremely nice
editor to read docs online!

if you loose the overview of a single lyx document - then it is badly
structured IMHO.

if a single lyx document is too heavy for some machines i would say that is
a major problem. will an equivalent latex file be as heavy, or is this a lyx
specific thing?

Unfortunately there is no team. At the moment the developers add new

The last time I cleaned up the docs a bit was in 2004. In the meantime I
started to work on a big docs update but haven't the time to do this all
alone.

Please have a look at this wiki page I created as base for the docs
cleanup/consolidation:

http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/DocumentationDevelopment

The docs you'll find there contains lots of improvements and should be
the base for further work on the docs. They are not up to date for LyX
1.4 but this should be done quickly.

The general wiki docs category is

http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/Documentation

where Christian Ridderström just uploaded a merged docs file.

Just for the info, under

http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/Tables
and
http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/LyXMathebefehle

are some Wiki-pages I created. Their content should be part of further
docs.

Maybe they don't think it's a good idea?
What would be the recommended way of making a concrete
proposal, attach the resulting single lyx file to a message on this
list?

One of my docs goals is to be able to print a LyX-book, like the books
of the series from Dante, the german TeX-users group. Therefore a single
documentation file as printable PDF is a good idea but not a single
LyX-file!
The reason is in one hand the performance: LyX consumes a lot of system
power to handle large files so that some users might have problems when
they want to use the documentation online within LyX.
On the other hand and this is the real problem: You'll loose the
overview to keep the docs up to date. I spent a lot of time to update
the docs to tell you that even the current userguide.lyx is too big for
a single file.
I propose to have a LyX-file for each chapter and a master LyX-file
where they are included. If you run the master through pdflatex you'll
get a nice all in one PDF as you wanted. The small LyX-files helps you
to reduce the compiling time for PDF or DVI if you work on a chapter.
That's the way books are written.

I hope I've written to a new docs team member. I would be very happy if
yes.

Re: please consolidate the documentation

2006-07-18 Thread Martin A. Hansen

I sincerely feel that the tutorial should also be included in a single
documentation file consisting of UG, extended etc. the reason for this is
that you can then cross-link from the tutorial to the parts of the UG
explaining a feature in depth. also, you can search the entire document for
whatever and find it both in the tutorial context (with links to the UG
context) and the UG context.

Finally, I dont see why the tutorial should _not_ be included.

nice plan sven! crisp and simple :o)

and yes - the documentation should be a lyx document so you see for yourself
how the lyx formatting is actually done - with the help of notes and
cross-references. i myself would always read the documentation in lyx and
not as pdf or dvi - i only use those to compare with the lyx document to see
the result of the formatting.

while the lyx documentation should contain all the relevant documentation to
get the most out of lyx, the important wiki should IMHO contain everything
else; such as guide showing how to complete more specific tasks etc. i see
an evolution of documentation where a certain issue is discussed on the
mailing list, then it is compiled as an item in the wiki, and if this item
in due time is deemed important enough - it will be included in the lyx
documentation. however, the documentation should not be overloaded! relevant
is a keyword here :o)

Ok, so I would suggest a perfect trinity: Introduction, Tutorial,
Manual. The manual would consist of what is now the user guide, extended
features, and customization. I guess using latex book parts would be
right for that. As a normal lyx user, you would only need the manual,
the first two docs are for beginners.

Of course, these days LyX have document branches which could be
used to turn on/off the parts one want to see, so a single big

with a more limited LyX, after all.

I take that as approval. When I have the time (not this month), I will
