Re: Tips and LaTeX docs
No disrespect to Lamport here, but can I suggest instead "A guide to LaTeX" by Kopka Daly? It is newer (1999), includes a lot of stuff that is not in Lamport's (but in one of the "companions"), its price is about the same as Lamport's, and I find it easy both to read and use as a reference. I'd say it is medium sized with great information; and some of my friends who own Lamport's end up borrowing mine from time to time. I actually looked at several Latex books before purchasing this one (and also read throught the readers reviews at amazon), and this was the clear winner for me. I've been using Latex for about 9 months (I use Lyx at home, but my departments machines don't have lyx so I used Latex on xemacs); I wrote my PhD thesis using Latex (and found it easy to fulfill the formatting requirements), submitted for publication 4 papers written with Latex (some to journals, which will remain unnamed, that have very twisted and idiosincratic formatting requirements), and I used just Kopka Daly's plus the very helpful answers of this list; I've also paid some visits to the CTAN archives and comp.text.tex (as suggested in this list). Just my 2 euros... Ramon On Sun, 02 Jul 2000, Jonathan Pennington wrote: Alright, I can't keep track of all these great little tips I keep seeing! printing: low quality... other stuff
Hi, After the suggestions from this list (thanks!) and asking in comp.text.tex I figured that the low quality printing problem could be solved if I were to use the computer modern fonts as Type I (postscript). This turned out to be very simple, as those fonts were already in my machine and all I needed to do was modify the script updmap and run it. This also has had the added benefit of allowing me to get better quality from pdflatex. However, I've run into a minor problem; I cannot use the \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} If I do, I do not get Type I computer modern fonts. I assume this is a common problem when one uses Type I computer modern fonts? Any work arounds (to get the hyphenation patterns and special symbos I can get with T1)? I think several people in this list also use pdflatex, and so I thought some of you might have run into these problems in the past. Thanks, Ramon

Re: Failure
I am not sure if this will do what you want, but you can use \usepackage{lscape} in your preamble then, when you get to the page(s) you want to have landscape just do: \begin{landscape} ... %% can have here stuff that spands over several pages \end{landscape} It works without any problems, keeps page numbers etc in the right position, and I have used it to include pages with figures and tables in landscape orientation in a document with an otherwise portrait orientation. There is only one minor catch, though: as soon as you issue the \begin{landscape} you get a new page right there, and it seems that Latex cannot choose the break point by itself. I have done this directly in Latex, and I think I have also used it in Lyx by marking the \begin{landscape} to \end{landscape} as Latex (after includeing the \usepackage{lscape} in the preamble). Re: dumb question: degree symbol: solved
Thank you very much to Juergen Vigna, Roger Williams, Tony Dancer and Jose Oliveira. The compose key is working now. However, similar to what happens to Tuuka, I am able to use the compose key with Xemacs, xterm, kmail, etc, but NOT with lyx (I am using version 1.1.3). In case this helps anyone else, this is why I had such a hard time: I had added the "keycode whatever = Multi_key" to my .Xmodmap file. In fact, in desperation, I had made the right control, the windows keys, and the scrolllock all multi_key's but it still didn't work. The reason was that at the very end of my .Xmodmap file all Mod's were cleared, and although most of them were added again, not the Multi_key. (I had already done some remapping of keys a while ago, using xkeycaps, and didn't want to discard my .Xmodmap file altogether). Things got fixed when I added : "add Mod3 = Multi_key" to my .Xmodmap file. In fact, I realized the problem when I renamed my .Xmodmap, and started from scratch with a simple .Xmodmap that only included the "keycode 109 = Multi_key" as indicated by Juergen. And, as explained in this list, I have been able to set the compose key by just modifying the .Xmodmap without touching the XF86Config file. Thank you very much to everybody again for persisting in helping me. Ramon

Re: dumb question: degree symbol
I don't really know a lot about this; there are some example on obtaining things such as accents and the copyright sign in the users manual (section 2.4, I think); and I found out that that is the way to get the degree symbol. There seems to be a variety of symbols/special characters that can be generated by the compose key. What is the Compose key, and how do I use it? phma

dumb question: degree symbol
Hi, I know this is a really dumb question, but its driving me nuts: how do I get the "o" of degree (say, for celsius, or for latitude)? I was able to get something like it with a "\circ" as index, but this seems an overkill. Any simpler ways? I actually think it can be generated with the keyboard, but how (with a US keyboard)? Thanks, Ramon
Re: dumb question: degree symbol
Thanks a lot to Juergen and Jean-Marc; however, I cannot find my Compose key. I've tried with xkeycaps (I am running Linux), and cannot find anything called "compose" or "Compose"; then I tried modifying directly the .Xmodmap file in two different ways: first, I wrote :"add Compose = Super_L" (where Super_L is mapped to the WIndows key). That didn't do anything. Then I directly wrote "keycode 0x73 = Compose" (again, that is the left Windows key). That didn't do anything. I've looked through the manuals and I don't seem to be able to find how/where the information on the Compose key is. The only modifiers I seem to be able to select from xkeycaps are: Shift, Lock, Control, mod1, mod2, mod3, mod4, mod5. What am I doing wrong? There are a few you could try. Barracuda TKBibtex qbibman gbib pybliographer (still a bit unstable, but highly comprehensive and excellent searching) I'd like to add one to the list (although I use pybliographer most of the time): bibview ; it comes with the SuSE Linux distribution. Ramon

Hi, Is there an easy way to change the line spacing in figure captions? I found I can do that by directly manipulation the Latex file (inserting, e.g., a "\setlength{\baselineskip}{18pt}" before the final "}" of the caption). However, is there an easier way to do that in Lyx directly? Ramon

placement of table and figure floats

I have used table and figure floats, and have the table float in a page of its own before the figure captions (the figure captions are figure floats without any figure in them, just the caption). Hi, I asked this a while ago, but didn't get any answers so I'll try again. I need to number each line of a manuscript (journal requirement). I've been looking around at the users, customization, and extended manuals, and in one Latex book (Koppa and Day), but can't seem to find anything. Can I do this with Lyx? Thanks, Ramon

Re: BUG: Insert cross-reference window
I have the same problem with Lyx 1.1.3 on Linux (Suse 6.3). 'Insert Cross-reference...' window does not respond to keyboard until it's clicked with the mouse. Re: Conversion to MS-Word
If that doesn't work OK, you might want to try Hevea which, I've been told, seems to be a slightly better latex-Html converter than latex2html. (I can't find the url for hevea, but if I recall correctly, it is easily found doing a web search using keywords such as Hevea and Linux). But then i have a question: what about in the other direction, such as StarOffice or Word to Lyx? I know that I can save the file as a text file, and import it (paragraph option), but that way I loose all the formating, etc. Any other alternative? Dear All, I am submitting a ms., and the editor requires that each line be numbered, including abstract (as far as I can tell, doesn't matter if numbering starts from 1 in each page, or if it continues from previous page). I've been looking around the Lyx manuals and in one Latex book (Kopka Daly) but I can't find how to do it Any ideas? Thanks a lot, Ramon

special characters and numbering pages
Dear All, I am recent convert to Lyx (amazing program!); I have two questions: 1. Can I number a document starting at some arbitrary page number (say, 23)? How? 2. On the Reference Manual, 6.4.3., how can I insert any of the special characters in a document --say, the copyright notice? (it says "without using too many modifier keys", but I've been trying all I could think of without luck). Thank you, Ramon
