doublespace creates error in DVI
Hello. I am using Lyx 1.3.4 on RedHat 9. I have been using the article(elsevier) class with good success for a month or so now. I now need to have it doublespaced rather than single spaced. I tried under Layout - Document - Linespacing changing to doublespaced but when I generate a DVI or try to print I get the following 2 errors: 1. Missing number, treated as zero. \doublespacing A number should have been here; I inserted `0'. (If you can't figure out why I needed to see a number, look up `weird error' in the index to The TeXbook.) 2. Undefined control sequence. \doublespacing The control sequence at the end of the top line of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue, and I'll forget about whatever was undefined. I have googled these errors and seen mention of them but without a solution that makes sense to me. I do have setspace.sty in my tex directory, and I have tried putting \usepackage{setspace} in the preamble and then reconfiguring and then restarting. I've also tried running texhash as root and then restarting. I get the same 2 errors still. Does anyone have any other ideas for what I should try? Thanks! Ashleigh

Re: figure numbering adds decimal: Resolved
Thanks to all for the suggestions. As most of you pointed out, I was not letting lyx do its job of numbering the figures automatically. I didn't really need to add a figure number, I just had to write a caption after Figure#: and lyx would number the figure for me. I wasn't yet sure what my captions were so I was just looking for the figure number alone. Now I know! Thanks for the help and patience. Then I insert my figure into the float with no problem. In lyx the figure has the correct number, Figure#: 1 but in the dvi each figure is labeled with an additional decimal - so it becomes Figure 1.1, Figure 2.2, Figure 3.3 etc. Am I doing something wrong that is making lyx add that decimal that I don't want? How can I get just Figure 1, Figure 2... The '#' will be replaced by the figure number automatically in the output. You do not have to enter any number manually there. Andre'

Thanks to Jan for pointing out that within the insert citations dialog box there is a place that toggles the citation style and there I can choose the style that I need. I hadn't noticed that yet and was making the problem much more complicated than necessary! ;-) Thanks again. Ashleigh

natbib and elsart-harv.bst citation formatting problem
Greetings and thanks to everybody who has contributed to LyX. I have been learning it for a few weeks as I write up an article for my dissertation and I love it - it makes writing fun, unlike MS word which made me pretty miserable. My setup: I am using LyX version 1.3.4. I am using the article (elsevier) document class and I installed it by creating /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex/elsevier and put elsart12.sty, elsart.cls, and elsart.sty in there - it wasn't clear to me which of those files I needed but the article (elsevier) layout option showed up in LyX after I ran texhash as root so I figured I was ok. I put elsart-harv.bst in /usr/share/texmf/bibtex/bst/natbib. Under Document Settings - Bibliography I have Use NatBib checked and Cite Style: Author year. In the Preamble I have only: \usepackage{natbib} \usepackage{amssymb} \bibliographystyle{elsart-harv.bst} My problem: Under the above conditions, when I make a .dvi, I get: ... the relationships of 53 species Blaxter et al. [2]. whereas I need: ... the relationships of 53 species (Blaxter et al., 1998) I have tried adding \citestyle{authoryear} to the preamble and I get: ... the relationships of 53 species Blaxter et al.
