BTW, make sure you have configured tlmgr to keep one or two versions of
updates in case you pull a misunderimproved version of something and so
can revert.

I do the updates manually (little shell script), so that I am aware of

Re: Both table and figure sideways

2023-06-30 Thread Daniel

Hi,

I am trying to create a sideways float page with containing both a table
with data and a figure illustrating the data. I also would like to see
the correct number of the table and diagram in their respective captions.

Is this somehow doable in LyX?

The most obvious way seemed to be to create a sideways float and then
add several captions, but I can only add captions of the same type (only
Table or only Figure). So, the straight forward way seems not to work.

Thanks!

Daniel

Seems hard to do in LyX. Maybe my requirements were too stringent.
Anyway, seems to me like something that should be easy to do. And it is
rather simple in pure LaTeX using captionof.

FWIW, there is a bug report and a patch at
https://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/11734. Maybe some day...

tex2lyx Feature Request

2023-06-30 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse
Hi,

I am doing an exercise of translating OpenOffice formatted files into
Lyx via pandoc and tex2lyx.

The LyX file is readable but when I use scrlettr it wants Koma Letter V1
which is not installed. I had to do

 find /Applications/LyX.app/ -name 'scrl*'

to find

 /Applications/LyX.app//Contents/Resources/layouts/scrlettr.layout
 /Applications/LyX.app//Contents/Resources/layouts/scrlttr2.layout

and I found

 pandoc --list-output-formats

so I wonder if one should not implement a similar switch like

 --list-modules

or similar which would do just that and return something like

Both the LaTeX and pdf files are attached.  (Ignore the text: it needs

This is a simple problem, I'm sure, but I just can't get it to render
right.

I have an article I'm adding an image to as a float and I have
attached a label to it.

The first problem is that it comes up as Figure 0.1.  I'll eventually
be putting this into a section, so how can I put this as Figure 1.1?
How can I get this to put the section number correctly?

Then I add a sentence (see the very end of the text) "(See Figure .)"
I add in a cross-reference to the label "Figure 1."  Okay, but the
figure number does not come in, and I wanted to enumerate this, in
case I wanted to add another figure in front of this one.  How do I do
the enumeration?

Don't use the modul for sectionwise image count:
Documents->Preferences->Modules

or define a section.

The beta3 file format is different from the beta2 format. So you'd have
to use lyx2lyx to convert any file you saved with beta3. This is less
complicated than it sounds. Save the lyx2lyx directory from the beta3
version before you uninstall it. Then after you reinstall beta2, copy
that directory into place. It's just python so text files, so this will
work. I think. Worst case, you can run lyx2lyx from the command line to
do the conversion.

I'm going to get a lot of static about this, but in any serious
documents I place a compile shellscript in the directory and use that
to compile the LyX document and display it in *my* PDF viewer. So each
doc has its own compilation method, and when there are problems, LyX is
almost completely ruled out as a root cause. It's either something I
did or an unfortunate CTAN change.

Over time, as things evolve, usually for the better, I can alter my
compile script to take advantage of the changes. With my compile
shellscript, I can do a reconfigure every time with configure.py. I
name my shellscript something like jj so when it's time to recompile my
book I simply do ./jj . After all, I'm already in the book's directory.

You can, and I suggest you try it just in case it works, but my
experience tells me that out of stack errors are caused by bad LaTeX
authoring, not a correct LaTeX file that just happens to need a little
more stack.

I know how to fix this. Archive what you currently have, copy it to
mwe.lyx, then start subtracting stuff until only the essentials of the
requirements to produce the error remain. Archive that file as mwe.lyx.
Then, with some experimentation, the root cause should stick out like a
sore thumb, and once you find it, you can fix it either by fixing the
root cause in the originally archived document, or by slowly building
up the fixed mwe until it becomes obvious how to fix the original file.

Even if this doesn't work for you, asking questions about mwe.lyx would
*greatly* increase the likelihood of somebody accurately answering your
questions.

I run into this hassle all the time. It's frustrating and time
consuming, but if you follow the process, fixing it isn't rocket
science.

biblatex question

2023-06-28 Thread Rich Shepard

I'm getting a build error at the bibliography grey box at the end of the
document: "Package inputenc error: keyboard character used is undefined."

In the biblatex cheat sheet the first command in the preamble should be
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
but in my document it's
\usepackage[latin9]{inputenc}

I don't see where in Settings I can change that. It must be an option in one
of the settings and I don't know which one.

Pointer needed.

Reduce the document by half and look at the half which triggers the
error.

Rinse and Repeat until you locate the error in your (generated) LaTeX
which triggers this (misleading) error message and fix it.

Herbert,

Did all this.

Tried compiling the book and get the same error, but with the stack_size at
2. The build stops at the same point: `Data' on line 402.

Should I increase the stack_size more (there's 32G RAM on this host)?

What might be causing this error? There are many figures and tables in the
book if that is an issue.

Herbert,

I saw that in the log file and had no idea what it meant. The Preface

chapter without number, and I'm adding an Acknowledgement page before
that

which will also be a chapter without number.

Rich,
that looks ok.
You can try to increase the stack.for example

Put this into a file /usr/local/texlive/2023/texmf.cnf

Create it, if not present. The main system configuration file is in

Then run

fmtutil-sys --all

(maybe as root)

There are three statistical model frameworks applied to data sets.
They are not equivalent and each is most appropriate to answer questions
about different types of data.

I want to learn more about incorporating LaTeX in my LyX documents.
For this
book I want to modify the chapter headings and found code that does
most of
that (chapter name left-aligned between two horizontal rules) and I
want the
chapter number in words (all lower case) centered above that. This
will wait

until I learn how to fix the capacity issue and prepare the index.

Actually, I wasn't concerned for you in particular but wondered whether

anyway since no one else has reported similar problems, it's probably

Indexing a book

2023-06-23 Thread Rich Shepard

Hi group,

I've read the Indexing chapter in the Users Guide, a couple of StackExchange
threads plus general guides to indexing. One LyX-specific issue I've not
seen addressed is how to add bibliography authors to the index.

The book has citations entered by JabRef. Some authors have entries as
single authors, others as both single and part of multiple authors. Since
my book is technical I would like to add all cited authors to the index.
Pointers on how to do this (perhaps manually at each document citation?)
will be very helpful.

Hi,

I can confirm that LyX-2.3.x attempts to make backups every 5 minutes - even if
I set the interval to one minute in preferences.

With LyX 2.4.x this is fixed.

In case nothing is changed there is no new backup written though.

Which sync you’re referring to?

I’ve read the code for change tracking in LyX and IMO its as follows:
1. LyX saves the timestamp to the document file as Unix timestamp. No timezone
involved. (*)
2. LyX converts this timestamp to string presentation via gmtime(3) and
asctime(3). No timezone involved again.

IMO there is no sync problem in LyX documents. The saved timestamp is always
w/o timezone. The timestamps in LaTeX export file should be interpreted as UTC.

(*) Others problems are implied:
1. Unix time_t doesn’t consider leap seconds.
2. On 32-bit systems the time ends on January 19, 2038.

A riddle.

Two hours behind sounds like UCT (GMT). European time is one hour ahead but
then another hour for daylight savings. I suspect that your system clock is set
for UCT, which is what LaTeX is picking up.

I've had similar problems on a Windows system.

My macOS preferences say "Central European Summer Time" and in the terminal I
get

  rh@iMac ~ % date
  Mon Jun 19 21:27:10 CEST 2023

It remains a mystery, then, where LyX or LaTeX gets its UCT/GMT time from.
Should I worry about this possibly messing up sync?

Sync has been the problem for me. But if you're not seeing a problem, I
wouldn't worry about it.

In this case you get local format or system format files.

Different errors when run by user and root.

Paul,

Makes sense to me.

Taking the error message at face value, it looks like you somehow ended up
with a very recent (June 2023) version of TeXLive with a not quite so
recent (May '23) version of one of the files (expl3.sty). So maybe an
installation or update of TeXLive got bollixed up? At any rate, it's
unrelated to LyX. Somebody reported this

with an earlier version of TeXLive and posted what looks like a fix.

Yes, I did a tl update earlier this month. Just did another one (34 updates
packages.) Perhaps I need to make this a weekly cron task for root.

Thanks for the URL. Reading that thread I just ran `fmtutil-sys --all' and
now have a different issue:

it is a problem with your different latex (expl3) files, they don't match
with its versions. Run an update

(sudo)  tlmgr --self --all update

and run the document again.

However, if you have _local_ versions of latex3 files, then it maybe more
diffucult to fix it.

I think the stuff about UTF-8 right above the error message has nothing
to do with the error. The error just got discovered after that log line.

Er, not so. This just popped up again in a different doc without a
bibliography. But, a second ctrl-h to copy the whole error log produced the
.pdf.

With the first doc, a new ctrl-h also resulted in the .pdf being produced.

I'd still like to understand the error, but since I can send these docs to

Two hours behind sounds like UCT (GMT). European time is one hour ahead
but then another hour for daylight savings. I suspect that your system

Thanks for checking. Insert date gives the correct (Dutch) time here, too. But
the time stamps added to the LaTeX preview are always exactly two hours behind.

Hello Wolfgang,

I have installed TeXLive 2023 and preceeding versions according to
https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/TeX_Live/#Manuell
and then to adapt $PATH according to
https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/TeX_Live_DVD-Installation/#Anpassung-der-Pfade
and then to tell apt that I have TeXLive
https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/TeX_Live_DVD-Installation/#Paketverwaltung-die-neue-TeX-Live-Version-mitteilen

I never had any problem with these instructions.

texlive 2023 > WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO GET 2023 WORKING??

2023-06-19 Thread Wolfgang Engelmann

I checked with synaptic in my Debian 5.10179-1 (2023-05-12)
> 2020_20210202-3

and with
latex -v
> Tex Live 2022

and in /usr/local
is /texlive/2022 and /texlive/2023

I have done in my ./profile according to (1-) the (2-)

1-
Post-install: setting PATH

After the installation finishes, you must add the directory of TeX Live
binaries to your PATH—except on Windows, where the installer takes care
of this. The installer shows the exact lines that should be added. As an
example, for Bourne-compatible shells (e.g., in ~/.profile or ~/.bashrc):

  PATH=/usr/local/texlive/2023/bin/x86_64-linux:$PATH
Use the initialization file and syntax for your shell, your installation
directory, and your binary platform name instead of x86_64-linux. After
editing the init file, log out and log back in.

If you have multiple TeX installations on a given machine, you need to
change the search path to switch between them—except on MacOSX.

2-
./profile
...
# if running bash
if [ -n "$BASH_VERSION" ]; then
# include .bashrc if it exists
if [ -f "$HOME/.bashrc" ]; then
. "$HOME/.bashrc"
fi
fi

# set PATH so it includes user's private bin if it exists
if [ -d "$HOME/bin" ] ; then
PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH"
fi

#$HOME/.profile PATH
PATH=/usr/local/texlive/2023/bin/x86_64-linux:$PATH;export PATH
MANPATH=/usr/local/texlive/2023/texmf-dist/doc/man:$MANPATH;export MANPATH
INFOPATH=/usr/local/texlive/2023/texmf-dist/doc/info:$INFOPATH; export

For me it also works correctly. I am in the same timezone (Amsterdam), and my
LyX date format is %c

Insert / Date gives Sun Jun 18 20:24:41 2023
