Re: Lyx and Japanese (no matter how hard I try there are always some problems)
Sorry for the bother eventually I managed to use the fonts by doing a ful system font refresh and a latex font refresh. Cheers.

Re: Lyx and Japanese (no matter how hard I try there are always some problems)
Most popular way to do is to install pTeX if you are thinking of writing Japanese as a main task. pTeX also includes normal TeX, so in most of cases it suffices to do. What kind of errors did you get when you tried it?

Re: Lyx and Japanese (no matter how hard I try there are always some problems)
Thank you very much for your kind reply. I have been trying to use XeTex as well but somehow I cannot get Lyx/xetex to use the font. I installed the hiragino otf in the open type font directory of MikTex, but nothing. Even if I declare the font family at the beginning of the document, Lyx/xetex cannot find it and I get the blank pdf. How do I get Lyx to use XeTex with otf and ttf fonts properly? All the best P.s I am replying to you directly because I am not yet subscribed to the mailing list.

Lyx and Japanese (no matter how hard I try there are always some problems)
Hello, I have been trying quite a lot setting up Lyx to work with Japanese (specifically the Hiragino Mincho otf) and a font with lots of diacritics (specifically Times Extended ttf), but I haven't yet been able to do it. I used both Ubuntu and Windows, MiKtex, Texlive and pTex, but there is always some problem or something missing or some encoding error. I have also tried converting the fonts and making tfm but to no avail. I have followed almost all the tutorials online. Although I was very enthusiastic about the whole Lyx and latex thing, I am now beginning to hate it. I hope someone can help me with some clear instructions in order to use the two fonts above mentioned and make a pdf file out of the lyx one. Thank you in advance.

Did you already try the XeTeX approach? This seems to be the most reasonable one if you rely on OTF and TTF fonts: http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/XeTeX LyX's XeTeX support is very limited (the next major release will introduce some better support, though).
