And then there are the equations. And bibliography. And there's the effort of learning a new app. For my needs, LyX is perfectly good for taking notes. Riki

For those wanting the ultimate in outlining, there's Leo, which has gone where no other outliner has gone before. Not as fast in authoring as VO, but very complete, and probably as fast for notetaking as LyX. The nice thing is you get the formatting done directly (eg use Description for Q&A) and can even make shorter equations if you know the shortcuts. After, press cmd R and you have nicely formatted documentation of the event. You can of course do the same e.g. in Word, but I never manage to get formatting to look good, and equations (even simple) are out of the question if you do it on-the-fly.

I think LyX is marketed correctly as a document creator. If you have time and are so inclined, you can create any kind or sort of document with LyX. Save the template for future use and there it is, almost magic next time. If needing anything at all, a few tweaks. Many people say they just don't have time or can't be bothered to muck about, or reinvent the wheel, trying to get some things to work with LyX. Better, easier, faster to use another program that someone else has had time to muck about with to get working. I think that's true. But most document types, which are not very extensive, that I require, can be or have been created with LyX by someone else or myself, and tweaked as needed for each purpose. Very often and graciously helped by those on this mailing list. I also like to use LyX for taking notes, especially when those notes will involve mathematical formulas and notation but also because of all the keyboard shortcuts for sections and the like. It is also good for making references in a straightforward manner. However, I don't really think LyX should be marketed that way. Its main purpose is still to be a front end for LaTeX.
