LyX version 2.3.0 (beta 1)

2017-08-17 Thread Scott Kostyshak
Public release of LyX version 2.3.0beta1

We are proud to announce the first public beta of the new LyX 2.3 series.
This pre-release is meant for testing and should not be used for serious work.
For curious users who would like to test in order to help catch bugs before
the 2.3.0 release, please back up all of your documents and be prepared for
the worst to happen. Most users (who desire a stable LyX version) should not
use this pre-release.

The 2.3 series has a rich set of new features compared to the current stable
series. An overview of the new features can be found here:

  http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/NewInLyX23

You can download LyX 2.3.0beta1 from ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/devel/.

We appreciate your help in testing this pre-release!

The file lib/RELEASE-NOTES lists some known issues and problems compared
to the current stable releases (LyX 2.2.x). We strongly recommend that
packagers of LyX on various platforms and distributions read this file.

As with any major release, this one comes with a lot of new features but
also some bugs. If you think you have found a bug in LyX 2.3.0beta1, either
email the LyX developers' mailing list (lyx-devel at lists.lyx.org),
or open a bug report at https://www.lyx.org/trac/wiki/BugTrackerHome.
Please specify if the behavior you are reporting is different from behavior
in a previous LyX version.

If you have trouble using LyX or have a question, consult the
documentation that comes with LyX (under Help) and the LyX wiki, which you
will find at https://wiki.lyx.org/. You can also send email to the LyX users'
list (lyx-users at lists.lyx.org).

Key binding of unicode-insert problem

2017-08-17 Thread Shieh, Sanford
I'm trying to bind unicode-insert of accents and umlauts on vowels using a bind
file, and running into the following issue.

I have the following line in the bind file:

\bind "M-S-: u" "unicode-insert 00FC" # umlaut lower u

But in the Preference Editing Shortcuts dialog box this shows up weirdly (also
in attached JPEG)

[cid:image001.jpg@01D31769.E2D60C80]

As this screenshot shows, there's no problem when I use the dialog box to bind
to the alt-shift-: followed by u combination.

Is this an issue with Win7, which I'm using?

Sorry if this problem has already been solved, I couldn't find a solution in
the LyX list.

I also see something weird in the dialog, but it's a different weird
from yours. This is on Linux. My guess is that there is some kind of
font problem.

Can you file a bug about this at lyx.org/trac/?

I also get something different but weird (and consistent with respect to
changes I made to various elements), also on Linux.

The issue seems to be the colon. If you spell out the word in the bind
file (i.e., "M-S-colon u"), it works fine. That's what ends up in the
bind file when you enter it through the dialog. Putting a literal ":" in
the bind file seems to create havoc.

RE: Key binding of unicode-insert problem

2017-08-17 Thread Shieh, Sanford
On Win7 it seems not to be only the colon. I have three other bind file
weirdnesses

\bind "C-S-%" "unicode-insert 00A7" # section sign

\bind "C-'" "unicode-insert 0027" # dumb right single quote
\bind "'" "quote-insert single" # smart single quote

The latter two I did because I wanted to have the ' key act as a smart single
quote. The results are however:

[cid:image002.jpg@01D3177B.AD6CEED0]

So I still have to use the dialog box to do these bindings.

The smart single quote is really weird, and I don't understand quite what I did
in the dialog box to get the right result, but here's what it looks like:

Again, punctuation marks need to be spelled out in the bind file. Try
"C-S-percent", "C-apostrophe" and "apostrophe" respectively.

Mind you, I have no idea why LyX chokes on punctuation marks in the key
combination specifications of the bind file, but that seems to be what
is happening.

Probably still worth a bug report. At the very least we should make
sure this is documented somewhere.
