Nice thought Robert, but I don't have any parted out and don't have time to do
that; right now I am completely occupied selling off bits and pieces of my
reel-to-reel collection
Josh: All I know about the 200 is that it seems to power up and occasionally
shows the directory; otherwise the screen blacks out (i.e. all the pixels go
black at the same time -- from what I remember, I think there is rolling bar

If you have another main rom to swap, does that mean you have another whole
M100 you could swap the lcd board?

No software can do that in such a way that a cold reset doesn't clear it.
There is almost certainly a hardware problem somewhere.

The felt is on a plastic arm, but that arm is lifted by a bit of sheet
metal to let the disk in and out.

I think what he meant was it's possible for that metal to be bent and keep
the felt lifted, perhaps only a little, even when the disk is inserted and
the door closed, preventing the felt from pressing the disk to the
read/write head.

Re: [M100] SPAM-LOW: Dead Model 100

2020-11-18 Thread Jeffrey Birt
When the LCD is first powered up it will turn all segments black. After the
computer properly initializes the LCD drivers a;; segments will be turned off.
Having them all black would indicate that the LCD drivers are able to address
the individual LCD segments. Since they are not clearing it would seem to
indicate that the drivers are not being initialized properly.

I would start by first doing a hard reset (CTRL+BREAK+reset_button, hold reset
until after machine boots then release). If that does not do anything then make
sure you did not inadvertently bend some pins on the ROM you put back in, etc.
If you get stuck, I do repairs.

Thanks for the advice! I did some tinkering and the TPDD2 still reports an
I/O error or Communications error when trying to format (depending on DOS),
you can see it homes and seems to step through each sector. The felt pad
on the drive seems to be on a plastic arm, not a metal one. It seems
to be making decent contact with the disk from a quick visual.

I did notice the low battery led wasn't flashing and seems to have broken
off the solder points. I haven't had a chance to fix this yet, but can't
imagine it's related.

Re: [M100] M102 TANDY + TS-DOS + TPDD 100k issue

2020-11-18 Thread jp.vanroy
Steve,

ok, I understand better now, thank you.

I am not aware of the software architecture inside the ROM, so for now, I can’t
understand the program from Microsoft
(and this is the same for TS-DOS) without spend months to analyse and try to
decode the soft.
But anyway, I am happy that Kurt and you agreed to the fact that TS-DOS was
certainly not compatible with my EU version.
Thank you infinitely for all your help and time.

Jean-Pierre,

I think when I looked at the ROM, the sections that were different included the
TELCOM section, and I assume that it means the modem tone generation is
different. That implies the RC filter networks on the modem circuitry would
also be different.
I can't say for sure but I believe the ROM functions are written to match the
analog capabilities of the modem itself.

but who uses the modem anyways!

Most likely, the folks at Traveling Software didn't take into account the EU
version. Or perhaps they were unaware of it. Those details are likely lost to
time.

As for compatibility. I would check the model number on the main board to
make sure it matches the US mainboard. If not, there could be issues. Hopefully
the ROM patch was something specific to EU use such as the extended ASCII
character table.

yah, we know the rom is different. Already compared.

So, maybe that EU ROM is not really compatible with TS-DOS.

BINGO! THANK YOU, JIM!

I had no idea that I had to use the TAB key to toggle between RAM and ROM modes.

This must have been in the REXCPM documentation on bitchin100.com. Even though
I have searched and searched bitchin100.com I must have missed it somehow.

I am so sorry that I consumed so much of everyone's time and bandwidth because
of my lack of knowledge.

Thank you to all who have tried to help me!

.BY files are the RAM image backups - are you sure you're loading from the

.BY files are the RAM image backups - are you sure you're loading from the
optrom screen instead of the ram image screen?

Re: [M100] STRUGGLING to get REXCPM loaded

2020-11-18 Thread bob
Still trying to load TSD100.BX.

I tried LaddieAlpha: no luck, same file name error.
I tried LaddieCON: no luck but this time LaddieCON reported that it was unable
to load file named
TSD100.BY
Note the different extension (.BY).
Why is RXCMGR asking for a file with the .BY extension?

Bob, I believe you need to rename your TSD101 file to be TSD101.BX

Re: [M100] M102 TANDY + TS-DOS + TPDD 100k issue

2020-11-18 Thread Stephen Adolph
Jean-Pierre, the good news is that your hardware is likely directly
compatible with 27C256. I say this by looking at the photo you sent
showing the main rom, and that other T102 are compatible with 27C256.

But, your board is different, too.
I think it would be useful to post your PCB images as an example of a T102
variant for EU.

So, we have to hope that your schematic is basically the same.It
probably is a "work alike" PCB with minor changes.

This would of course make your modem unusable, but hopefully everything
else continues to work.

2020-11-18 Thread Kurt McCullum
Most likely, the folks at Traveling Software didn't take into account the EU
version. Or perhaps they were unaware of it. Those details are likely lost to
time.

As for compatibility. I would check the model number on the main board to make
sure it matches the US mainboard. If not, there could be issues. Hopefully the
ROM patch was something specific to EU use such as the extended ASCII character
table.

2020-11-18 Thread jp.vanroy
Yes, I have compared the ROM provided with Virtual T and my own ROM and
effectively, she are differents.
Like I say to Steve, I wonder if, maybe, I can burn the VIRTUAL T M102 ROM
inside a 27C256 to make a try ?
Naturally, there is a risk of hardware incompatibility, so, this is maybe not a
good idea.

This is very strange that Microsoft did an another version of ROM for the
European version.

yah, we know the rom is different. Already compared.
So, maybe that EU ROM is not really compatible with TS-DOS.

2020-11-18 Thread Stephen Adolph
Jean-Pierre sent me his ROM and I did a cursory check with REX#. It seemed
to work correctly.
So, I think what is happening is that the ROM he has, which is modified for
EU, isn't compatible with TS-DOS.

(this relates to my earlier thread complaining about TS-DOS issues. I
guess I still have this ROM loaded in my VT).

So...not much to do other than change the main ROM, unfortunately!
any other ideas?

2020-11-18 Thread jp.vanroy
I must also say that, for an unkown reason, the issue manifest himself with
differents ways into the TEXT editor.
Sometimes, you obtain just the message “aborted” like if the TS-DOS resident
portion was off and sometimes,
like I say before, the screen freeze or display some menu of TELCOM (but this
is more hard to obtain).

[M100] M102 TANDY + TS-DOS + TPDD 100k issue

2020-11-18 Thread jp.vanroy
Dear all,

I am a new owner of a tandy Model 102 and I put him an new REX# from Steve.

The REX# run fine but I encouter a strange problem when I activate the resident
portion of TS-DOS in RAM.

In fact, when I edit a .DO file in TEXT editor and try to save him with the F3
button and a file name like for example:

0:test the TEXT editor crash and I must reset the machine.

When the crash appears, sometime the screen freeze and sometime, a portion of
code of TELCOM seems to be read because the menu

PREV UP DOWN FULL of TELCOM appears on the bottom of the screen.

An another more radical crash occur when you made the following procedure :

1° activate TS-DOS resident portion

2° in BASIC, run the command SOUND 400, 100

3° exit BASIC with the MENU command (or F8)

3° in TEXT editor, inpur some text and hit F3

4° input 0:test

=> now, all the screen disappears and the reset button don’t work; I need to
power off and on the machine to restart.

With the help of Steve, I tested an image of my ROM into VIRTUAL T and the
issue can be reproduced.

So, I wish to ask you if maybe, an owner of a Model 102 know this problem or if
maybe, it is possible that my ROM image was
incompatible with the version 4 or 4.1 of TS-DOS ?

Thank you,

Jean – Pierre

I've updated the RAM card with a new cap and diodes. The new cap is in
stock and more importantly a more common footprint, and the diodes are
larger, easier to hand-solder, and also a common footprint.
So a future user could substitute equivalent parts as needed without
needing to change the board any more.

bom & pcb links all updated.
