Re: [M100] M100 overclock

2020-11-19 Thread Stephen Adolph
I got my first 5MHz NSC800 adapter board back today. I have one built and
installed in an M100 dedicated to CP/M. It worked as planned.

The only mods to the M100 were-
1. Remove 80c85 and install socket
2. Install Z80 version of M100 OS in 100nsec eprom
3. And of course RECXPM for ram.

I have a design done for an 80c85 board as well, but I'm not sure if I will
get them built. I probably will, if only to complete the project.

It certainly is fast! Feels pretty nice indeed.
I'm just going to use it and observe. It should be fine. One thing... the
faster speed does soak up more current. I see a jump from about 60mA to
about 85 mA.

Also, my BCR port hack for serial video now runs at 115200 Baud2x
faster.

I suppose that the regular serial port can now run reliably at 76800 baud.
May test that.

Cassette port will be non functional for several reasons! The 2x speed
definitely kills that...as does the lack of SID and SOD on the NSC800.

Sound in general is 2x higher pitch. Modem rates themselves are unchanged.

Anyhow, all in all, a reasonable set of tradeoffs for a 2x speed up.

The reel to reel collection is audio. I collected a lot in the late 1990s and
early 2000s, and my wife has been complaining that the entire basement has
become a man-cave.

Audio or data? ;)

Kinda sounds like the symptoms of a bad memory nicd (I get the same thing on
T200 when the memory supercap isn't charged after it's been sitting without
batteries; this is why I'm going to change the supercap back to a nimh battery
because the T200 doesn't handle lack of memory battery voltage very well).
Does it refuse to power off when you press the power button while the screen is
rolling/flickering?

It's possible they made a EU version of TS-DOS that just isn't very common or
documented. We have seen other special versions of things like that.

  Steve,

ok, I understand better now, thank you.

I am not aware of the software architecture inside the ROM, so for now, I
can’t understand the program from Microsoft
(and this is the same for TS-DOS) without spend months to analyse and try to
decode the soft.
But anyway, I am happy that Kurt and you agreed to the fact that TS-DOS was
certainly not compatible with my EU version.
Thank you infinitely for all your help and time.

  Jean-Pierre,

I think when I looked at the ROM, the sections that were different included
the TELCOM section, and I assume that it means the modem tone generation is
different. That implies the RC filter networks on the modem circuitry would
also be different.
I can't say for sure but I believe the ROM functions are written to match the
analog capabilities of the modem itself.

but who uses the modem anyways!

this is normal because in the past, we are not a market of big concern and
Traveling can not support

Steve, you say that the modem will be no more usable if I replace the
European ROM image; can you explain why ?

Most likely, the folks at Traveling Software didn't take into account the
EU version. Or perhaps they were unaware of it. Those details are likely lost
to time.

As for compatibility. I would check the model number on the main board to
make sure it matches the US mainboard. If not, there could be issues. Hopefully
the ROM patch was something specific to EU use such as the extended ASCII
character table.

Naturally, there is a risk of hardware incompatibility, so, this is maybe
not a good idea.

This is very strange that Microsoft did an another version of ROM for the
European version.

yah, we know the rom is different. Already compared.

So, maybe that EU ROM is not really compatible with TS-DOS.

I'm comparing the ROMs right now. They are different. The first byte I found
