Re: [M100] Any further info on TDock?

2023-05-09 Thread Stephen Adolph
System bus on T102 is hamstrung compared to M100. T102 can only support IO
read write whereas m100 exposes both memory and io.
The bus runs at full speed. Every cpu cycle on M100 could run on the
expansion bus. For IO only as in the T102, your ability to read or write
is limited by the software design, but the peak rate could be as high as
about 800Kbytes per sec? 3 clock cycles needed to execute an OUT opcode.
So 1.2 nsec.

2023-05-09 Thread MikeS
Non-volatile storage, network connectivity and a bigger display are all easily
possible right now with little or no hardware required; why add the complexity
of using the system bus, especially the M100 (vs. T102) connector version.

The DVI uses the system bus and the cabling has always been a big PITA; some of
the various memory expansion etc. projects do use some of the signals on the
bus as needed, as well as the system and option ROM sockets.

What do you want it to do?
MVT100 exists. https://bitchin100.com/wiki/index.php?title=VT100

I'm aware of MVT, neat little project, but not really what I'm looking for.

I am mainly interested in non-volatile storage and network connectivity,
whether that's the host machine backing up the M100's files or the M100 being
presented with a modem emulator. TRS-Box type functionality would be ideal. A
bigger display would be nice, but is somewhat secondary for me.

I don't see a reason to mess with the cassette port, BCR port, or serial port
when the computer has the system bus exposed...and for exactly this purpose. In
fact, I'm a little surprised that nobody has built any projects (that I'm aware
of) that use the system bus. Seems ripe for experimentation, since it gives
direct access to the CPU.z

Side question: what kind of bandwidth is the system bus capable of? I can't
find any information on that specifically.

You mean like this?

That's an old game display (xbox 360?) clamped on to my M100 back in the day,
with an extended cable going back to the DVI.

>One question I must ask, how easy is it to read the contents of the disk

I always meant to look into that but never got around to it; apart from the
novelty I really only used the DVI for the display and just loaded/saved the
usual RS232 way. But there were quite a few parameter-driven format conversion
programs around in the old days to deal with the hundreds if not thousands of
different 'standards' used by the various manufacturers, so I'd be surprised
if it couldn't be done; maybe someone on here has in fact already done it.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the quick response! I seem to have misunderstood the design
intent of TDock, my apologies.
Certainly sounds like you have your hands full. One of my best friends has

that can be.

What do you want it to do?

MVT100 exists. https://bitchin100.com/wiki/index.php?title=VT100

If you want external display and storage, I could possibly create a build
of LaddieAlpha with a display window, terminal emulation and some kind of
serial line multiplexing. Then any small form factor computer capable of
running Mono or .NET with a serial port (pi) could be a dock. But with
multiplexing, you either have rigid modes or else TPDD, TELCOM, etc have to
be aware and cooperate with the multiplexer.

Or... IIRC I think MVT100 can use a cassette connector bitbang serial
hack... which would free up the RS232 connector for file I/O client,
TELCOM, ...

Re: [M100] Any further info on TDock?

2023-05-09 Thread Kenneth Pettit

Hey Mark,

TDock was an idea for a Pi Hat PCB to interface with the M100 Printer
port and then use the RaspPi as the display interface.  I developed a
PCB and even built one and wrote some M100 software, but it never got
any farther than that.  There were some grumblings about using a RaspPi
(with nearly infinitely more times horsepower) as a periph to the M100,
concerns about the cost of the PCB, etc.

So based on all of that along with my experience with NADSBox (my
experience was much different than that of the customers who use it), I
decided to abndon the idea.  These days I'm so busy trying to raise two
kids, one of whom is autistic, I don't have time for such projects, even
if I was inclined to start back up on something like that.
