Gordon,

In your post below, you were going to list the steps of using the drag and
drop. It appears the text is missing. Since I have just upgraded one of my
Mac's. I wish to know how to do it under ML. In fact, how to do it under Lion
is something I will have to check out in the archives.

There are still a lot of bugs in Mountain Lion, and also some new ones.
There are a lot of changes under the bonnet. One of the main ones that I'd
like to highlight now is the Signed Applications, (System
PreferencesSecurity and Privacy). When you open a new application for the
first time, if it isn't signed by Apple with a security certificate, you'll
be warned. You can still open the application, but here's an easier way. If
you go to the menu item I mentioned above, you can turn off the security
warnings. That way, the behaviour when opening new applications will be as
 it was under Lion.

As I said, drag and drop is very different under Mountain Lion. You can drag
and drop items from one location to another. Both the original and
destination locations must be visiblewhen you start dragging the items.
 Here's how to do it:

That was the case under Lion but see what happens when you press and hold
 VoiceOver+Comma.

Hello Diane, Josh, and Others,

I think that I gave a quick summary of what SuperDuper! does in one of my
posts, but it may have gotten buried in the flurry of recent posts. I also
gave a link to a nice blog posting that Lynne wrote about different backup
programs, but I see that the blog site is down right now, so I'll give you the
link to this article on System Backup posted at the main mac-access site:
http://www.mac-access.net/Extras/System_Backup.html

This is going to be a quick explanation, because a much better description is
given in the Take Control guide (Take Control of Backing Up Your Mac). There
are different parts to a good backup strategy, and one of the applications that
comes with your Mac, Time Machine, is pretty good at keeping copies of
documents and mail on your system. But because it is set up to easily track
changes, and mostly works incrementally, it can be easier to use to recover
files when you accidentally deleted something that was recently created -- in
the last month or two. In order to restore your current system you'd have to
apply not just the last major backup, but all the incremental ones. By
contrast, while programs like SuperDuper! and Carbon Copy Cloner also do
support incremental backups, their major value is for complete disaster
recovery when you want to get a completely working system up right away. If my
hard drive fails entirely, it's less important to me that I get it working agai
n with the most recent copies of documents than that I can bring up a version
immediately. And so these programs are set up to be able to make an image
backup or clone of your entire disk. The term bootable clone means that
not only is this a snapshot copy of the programs and folders on your system at
a given time, but that you can also attach the drive to your computer, hold
down the power button along with the option key, and select this as an
alternative drive to boot from (by pressing either the right or left arrow key)
and then pressing return to start the boot. If the hard drive of my laptop
dies, or if I manage to completely trash it with a new operating system
installation I can continue to work with almost no loss of time. Additionally,
if the cloned drive uses the same format as my computer (e.g., laptop sized for
laptops), and I can swap it into my computer (not possible with the MacBook Air
models, but doable for the MacBook Pros) and continue with a wo
rking system (although one which might not have the most recent contents on my
hard drive).

Since Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion), Apple has included a recovery partition on your
hard drive so that in the event of a corrupted operating system, you can start
up a completely new one. Of course, that doesn't help you if your entire hard
drive fails (including the recovery partition), so the recent discussions about
saving the downloaded version of Mountain Lion or Lion to a separate bootable
device (USB memory stick, DVD, etc.) are essentially about cloning the recovery
partition to some portable external media.

It's not practical to take frequent clone backups, since they can take 2-3
hours to perform (depending on the size of your hard drive and how full it is).
But they're very useful in cases where you want to troubleshoot your computer
(and need to do it by bringing up tools from a separate boot partition), or if
you do a system upgrade and decide that you don't like the new version -- you
can restore your hard drive with the clone that you made of the earlier
operating system and wait for the bugs to be ironed out.

This is only one part of the backup strategy, because all these physical
devices are in the same place. If your house burns down, it would be nice to
know that you can recover your files from a Cloud storage system, which is what
Sarah was talking about with Gordon on the subject of crash plan.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Sarah also did a Fleksy podcast that you can listen to at:
 http://tffp.marrie.org/486

As Geoff stated, the updated help for the current version, which has
additional features for using symbols and corrections for some of the version
1 limitations, support for import/export options, and a few other fixes, may
be found in the app. Probably the most important information is to keep
typing without waiting to hear the letters announced and just assume that the
app will identify the word you typed in one of the selections that you flick
through. Occasionally there will just be certain words that aren't in it's
dictionary, and you will have to slowly type and add these in. Or certain
long, and complicated words will better be entered if you carefully find the
first few letters, then revert to just guessing the positions of the other
 letters.

I think the current version is not really optimized for the iPad, and you'll
find if you explore the keyboard that the layout of the Fleksy keyboard
occupies a much larger portion of the screen than you're used to using, so
you have to exaggerate the placement of the keys in your touch gestures to
 use this at present.

 HTH. Cheers,

 Hi Gordon

I hope you got my text message about the Podcast that David Bridgewood did,
but I'm sure you'll find it if not.

Thanks to all, their replies were concise and should give you everything you
need. But, having been there myself, perhaps a bit more explanation is
needed, with apologies to others on the list.

I think it's the concept that is strange until you actually use it. After
pressing the Home button three times to turn VoiceOver off, you have to
imagine the blank screen is an invisible keyboard. Place your fingers where
you think the qwerty keys home row should be, and, if you're a touch typist,
go from there using all your fingers. I find it easier in Landscape mode so
lock Fleksy in Landscape via the Fleksy Settings dialog in the main Settings
app. But I know people who use Fleksy with only one or two fingers,
'guessing' roughly where the qwerty keys would be.

So you've turned VoiceOver off, got Fleksy in either Portrait or Landscape
mode according to your preference. You can check you've got it right using
the fact that a left flick will tell you there's no text to delete. (If the
keyboard's the wrong way round, turn it round till a left flick boings at
you to show no more text to delete).
Decide on whether you're going to actually touch type or use one or two
fingers. Use a word like 'bananas' as it's a good pattern to start with.

With the bottom edge of the IPhone near you, imagine the Home row a little
way up. So the B A N A N A s will be easy for you to imagine. Just press
where you think the B will be (bottom row, nearly at the halfway point on
the left side of the row), then tap the place as on a typewriter keyboard
and immediately lift your finger off the key. You won't get feedback but
should here a slight keyclick. (I do find I have to have volume turned up
when typing in a noisy environment).

Now type the other keys - quicker I find is better. So A over to the left
but a little higher as it would be on the Home row. N back on where the
bottom row would be but a little over to the right. Etc. Etc. It's much
easier if you are actually a touch typist but not difficult once you get the
hang of it if you're not.

Once you've typed all the letters of the word in, flick to the right instead
of pressing a space bar (this does take a bit of getting used to). This
brings up the 'Suggestions' list, and, with any luck your first word should
be 'bananas'. Accept this and you're ready to type the next word. No need to
press anything. After the word is spoken,

ways of presenting the original sender's address, and some are easier than
others to work with. When I'm using my Mac to reply to an email I actually
prefer the way Mac-Access presents the sender's email address as I find it
easier to select it from the body of my reply messages rather than needing to
navigate through email headers to find the address, as seems to be common
practice with many email lists these days. Note that these instructions are for
the Mountain Lion mail client. If you're replying from an Apple IOS device,
I'll let somebody else post instructions as I find the reply process to be much
more convoluted under IOS.

1. Press Command+R to start the process of replying to the current message.
This opens a new window with the Mac-Access address in the To: field and the
existing mail thread text in the body of the email message. Your cursor is
placed at the top left corner of the email body and VO announces, insertion
point at beginning of text..
2. Arrow down one line and you should hear VO speak a line of text that
includes the date, sender's name and sender's email address.
3. Use standard navigation and highlighting keys to highlight the sender's
email address. For example, if my cursor is at the beginning of that line, I
might press Option+Right Arrow to jump through the individual items on that
line until I hear VO announce, less than krystalwat...@bluebottle.com. I will
then use my arrow keys to move to the right of the less than symble, then
press Shift+Option+RIght Arrow twice to select the full email address.
4. Press Command+C to copy the selected text.
5. Use standard VO navigation keys to move to the To: field. Delete any email
addresses that are already in the To: field and then press Command+V to paste
the sender's email address.
6. Use VO to navigate back to the body of the message and begin typing. Don't
forget to delete all of the previous email thread except any relevant text, and
please remember to use periods between sentences.

Cheers,
HTH,
Bryan

Our Podcast, qery

2012-07-30 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi all

I wonder if anybody could be of help here. A while ago I submitted our podcast
into the iTunes store. When I do a search I'm not finding it at all. So I
tried re-submitting it but the store is telling me that the feed has already
been submitted. Can anybody explain this, or should I be contacting somebody
at Apple?

I updated our Podcast feed today to include a contribution by Paul Hopewell,
for which we are very grateful.

I would recommend what's app messenger as it for me is easier to use.

I also found out that the app does not support speaking via the

Re: the recovery tool

2012-07-30 Thread Sarah Alawami
I actually mis understood why the tools does. I think I might fuse lion disk
maker as I don't want to to connect to my 6mbps down connection and try and
download 4 gigs. My clean install would take like 6 hours. lol! It is a nifty
tool to have and I might use my 2 gig flash card if i can get it back from my
parents. lol! Just in case I blow up my recovery drive on my internal drive.

Take care all.

If you go to the menu item I mentioned above, you can turn off the security
warnings. That way, the behaviour when opening new applications will be as
 it was under Lion.

As I said, drag and drop is very different under Mountain Lion. You can
drag and drop items from one location to another. Both the original and
destination locations must be visiblewhen you start dragging the items.
 Here's how to do it:

That was the case under Lion but see what happens when you press and hold
 VoiceOver+Comma.

Re: How to use a remote disk drive?

2012-07-30 Thread Eric Caron
Dear Listers,

Here I go again answering my own question. I'm putting this here for
anyone who eventually finds this on the archives and is looking for the answer.
While exploring sharing options for files and such I found how to have one mac
share another computer's disk drive.

This is in Lion
I had asked for help doing this a week or so ago but got no takers.

Go to System Preferences
Go to sharing
on the mac with the disk drive go to the sharing table and check the box for
disk drives.
Add in the correct user in the next table
I then pressed the button that said share point and added myself in.

Frankly I don't totally understand these tables and what they mean but it now
works!

While I was there I set up file sharing as well and now can easily move files
around from one computer to the other as I can see the other computer's disc
drives on each desk top and move around and copy files as needed.

It is rather like magic to work on two computers from one keyboard.

Hope this info helps a current or future lister.

Back to my Mac, can it work with Voiceover?

2012-07-30 Thread Eric Caron
Listers,

I experimented with Back to MY Mac in a effort to get my laptop to
control my mini. This would be very helpful if it worked as intended as I
could basically operate my home computer from work. Well, I found it possible
to do quite a bit but voice over talks on the home computer not the one that is
operating it. So this will not work remotely.

Has anyone found a way to do this? Is it improved in Mountain Lion?

Question about Pages latest update on MountainLion and Time Machine backups

2012-07-30 Thread Shai
Hello,
I understand that there was a new update to Pages for the Mac for Mountain
Lion. Has anyone had a chance to use this? If so, are there any
accessibility issues?
Also, now that there is some synchronization between the updated Pages for
the iPhone and the updated Pages for Mac, does it make it easier in terms of
accessibility to rename and work with files?
Lastly, I have been backing up using Time Machine under Lion. When I go
ahead to install Mountain Lion, what will happen to the older backup? Should
I erase the external drive after installing Mountain Lion or will time
machine delete my older backups and start again?
Thanks in advance for any responses.
Shai

Re: Adding and removing from Mail Favourites bar.

2012-07-30 Thread Bryan Jones
No need to apologize or make a big deal out of asking for advice. There's a big
difference between asking a question that is rarely discussed, such as your
question here, and asking a question that is repeatedly asked on list that
could be answered with a quick google, archive or VO help search.

Here's my version of the answer to your question:
1. The following instructions assume you know how to perform basic Mac OS
navigation via keyboard and VO, that you've spent some time using VO+K to
familiarize yourself with VO commands, that you have Mail.app open in Lion or
Mountain Lion, and that you have both the Mailbox list and the Favorites Bar
showing, both of which can be toggled via the View menu.
2. Interact with the Mailbox list and move the VO cursor to the mailbox you
wish to add to your Favorites Bar.
3. Press VO+comma. VO will say the name of the mailbox, will announce marked
for drag and drop, and wil make a swishing or scraping sound, assuming you've
not changed the default sounds.
4. Stop interacting with the Mail box list, navigate to the Favorites Bar and
interact with it.
5. Move the VO cursor to the location on the Favorites Bar where you'd like
this mailbox icon to reside.
6. Press one of the following: VO+Shift+ to drop the item to the left of the
VO cursor; VO+Shift+ to drop the item to the right of the VO cursor. VO should
start scraping again and should then say something like mailbox being dragged,
mailbox inserted.
That's all there is to it.

HTH,
Bryan

Re: Question about Pages latest update on MountainLion and Time Machine backups

2012-07-30 Thread Sarah Alawami
For your tm questions, Mine just kept the old back ups so I have now 32 gigs
free. lol! Or I did until it cleaned some of them up. Hehahahha. It will keep
them. I don't think you can erase those folders with out damage.

Take care.

 Hello,
I understand that there was a new update to Pages for the Mac for Mountain

 accessibility issues?
Also, now that there is some synchronization between the updated Pages for
the iPhone and the updated Pages for Mac, does it make it easier in terms of
accessibility to rename and work with files?
Lastly, I have been backing up using Time Machine under Lion. When I go
ahead to install Mountain Lion, what will happen to the older backup? Should
I erase the external drive after installing Mountain Lion or will time
machine delete my older backups and start again?
Thanks in advance for any responses.

laughingly,
It depends on the context to which it is used.
It holds a totally different meaning at a brothel than it does in your
shack.
But I think you are referring to the latter.
It means to connect it to your system and allow your OS to locate it, like
in the case of a hard drive:
mount /dev/dev/hda
that's in Linux, but I'm not sure of the command-line method in the Mac OS.
