Re: A few easy questions about the Apple iPod Touch

Hi Paul,

I'll interleave replies after your questions.

 Hello,
I have a few easy questions about the Apple iPPod Touch
• Unless your questions apply specifically to features that are only present
for the iPhone, such as connection to a 3G network and phone service
subscription, built-in GPS and compass, generally higher resolution camera and
flash (although the iPod 5 has the flash and autofocus), etc. most answers for
the iPhone will be the same for the iPod Touch.

 1. Is there a VoiceOver accessible App which will support the reading of
 Daisy books?
• There are two apps that most people use for reading Daisy books: InDaisy and
Read2Go (spelled with the number 2 in the middle of the title). Each app
lists for $19.95. Read2Go is is Bookshare's app, so if you are a member of
Bookshare the advantage is that downloading Bookshare books directly into the
app is extremely easy. You can also upload other files to these apps by using
iTunes file sharing. (This requires connecting your device to your computer
and transferring your files to the application in the area for that application
on the applications tab for your connected device under iTunes). InDaisy also
supports FTP file transfer in addition to iTunes file sharing. I have an
outstanding request with Read2Go to let users automatically open Daisy files in
the app. This has made it to the third highest request option in the feedback
forums, and is marked as under consideration.

 2. Does the iPod Touch include any or all of GPS receiver, compass, and
accelerometer (so it can be used as a pedometer).
• The iPod Touch has a built-in accelerometer, but no GPS receiver or compass.
However, you could buy a GPS device that pairs to it via Bluetooth, such as the
DualNav XGPS150A, that you could wear on an armband. These list for under
$100, and there are a few different models that people have used. Dual
Electronics is the only vendor that I'm aware of that has published a fairly
extensive list of some of the GPS apps that have been tested to work with it's
devices. If you're moving, even slowly, the GPS sensor can tell your
direction. Here's a specific answer for your question (about using it as a
pedometer):
Track your speed, distance and record your route with apps for running and
cycling.
BikeMateGPS, iMapMyRIDE, RunKeeper Pro

RunKeeper Pro is an app that I know some have used as a pedometer. Here's the
link to the source PDF giving a partial list of the GPS apps checked out to
work with the DualNav XGPS models:
http://xgps150.dualav.com/pdf/apps.pdf

Here's the link to the main DualNav XGPS150 page:
http://xgps150.dualav.com/
The app that lets you check GPS signal strength of the device is also supposed
to be accessible with VoiceOver, according to a post in the AppleVis forums.

 3. Does the iPod Touch include an FM radio?
• No, I don't think any of the iOS devices (iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad)
include an FM radio. If you want an FM radio, you could check one of the
current model iPod Nanos. There used to be a built-in pedometer feature in the
iPod Nano 6th generation, and I've read this is also in the 7th generation.
This would also have an FM radio, but not the suite of iOS apps for the iPhone
and iPod Touch. Check the MacWorld review by Dan Frakes:

Paul,
I will add to Esther's reply regarding the radio,
You can use apps like TuneIn radio, which is free I think, and get lots of
FM radio stations, you need only have it connected via WIFI.
