Re: copying large chunk of text from safari.

2011-12-20 Thread Esther
Hi Lovette,

When I post a link to the Mail Archive for a post, that has full instructions
on how to set things up. This is meant to cut down on the traffic, and includes
how to get to System Preferences, and gives step by step information. You can
bring up the link in Safari and then Command-Tab to switch between reading the
instructions and working in another app. However, I'll paste in the text for
my earlier archived post at:
http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/msg00659.html
• Re: Selecting a block of text from a website on Lion
I'll just add that if you start from Mail, a quick way to get to the correct
section of the System Preferences menu for Services is to use Control+F2 or
VO-M to the Apple menu bar, right arrow to Mail, arrow down and press "S" for
the services menu, then right arrow and press Command+Down arrow to go to
"Services Preferences…" and press return. You can substitute that for my first
sentence (below), and then start at the sentence "You'll be placed directly in
the Keyboard Shortcuts pane…"

A quick way to get to the System Preferences for Services is to select some
text (doesn't have to be in Safari, can be in another application, such as
mail), then navigate to the Services menu on the menu bar (e.g., Control+F2 or
VO+m to the menu bar, navigate (VO+Right arrow) to the application, arrow down
and navigate to the Services menu option (quickly type "s e r" then press
return), then again quickly type "s e r" to move to the "Services Preferences"
option in the Services sub-menu, and press return. You'll be placed directly
in the Keyboard shortcuts pane that John mentions, with the advantage that
"Services" will already be selected in the first table of "Keyboard Shortcuts
Categories". So you only need to navigate to the second "Keyboard Shortcuts
Table", interact, then navigate to the entry for "New TextEdit Window
Containing Selection" and check it. I think you can simply move to the end of
the table (VO+Shift+End or VO+Fn+Shift+Right Arrow on a laptop), then VO+Left
Arrow to the column with the shortcut name. You only have to VO+Up arrow a few
times to get to the "New TextEdit Window Containing Selection" shortcut (in
Snow Leopard). VO+Left Arrow to the column with the check box and check it
(VO+Space). Then VO+Right Arrow past the description column to the column for
shortcuts, press return, and type in your new shortcut. Stop interacting with
the table and use Command+W to close the window.

This is for Snow Leopard, since I have to keep running some programs that are
not Lion compatible. However, if you do this in Mail, you don't have to select
any text for the "Services Preferences" in the submenu to show up. In most
applications you'll only get the Services submenu and the "Services
Preferences" entry to show up when you have selected something.

Cheers,

Esther

go to safari via the menues if you are in that program and then go to services,
then services prefs and yu should be able to follow ester's wonderful
instructions from there.

Take care.

that was after I inabled my keystroke. I dunno why lion is being stubborn of if
it is my machine but there ya go.

I might add though that it worked with the latest build of webkit.

Re: copying large chunk of text from safari.

2011-12-20 Thread Esther
Hi Lovette,

David and Sarah are referring to my linked instructions for enabling the "New
TextEdit Window Containing Selection" services menu option, with the option to
assign it a short cut. On the Keyboard Shortcuts pane of System Preferences,
after selecting "Services" in the Shortcuts Category table, you navigate to the
"Keyboard Shortcuts" table to check the services you want to activate. In this
case you want to check the box for "New TextEdit Window Containing Selection",
so that it will be an available option in your Services menu. There is also a
column in that table that optionally allows you to associate the checked
services menu option with a keyboard shortcut of your choosing, in addition to
the first column for the check box and the second column that names the
service. I believe that what Sarah was saying is that sometimes VO+Enter to
select the start of a section in Safari doesn't always work for them even after
interacting. As I recall, you may not be able to use that if you're on a link.
I'm not sure whether David was describing difficulties assigning the shortcut
within the table for the service menu option, but that's the only shortcut
field I can identify in the context of this discussion.

My original instructions were for Snow Leopard, but I think they also work
under Lion. Incidentally, if you are having difficulty finding and selecting
text in Safari, and you have set up this service menu option for "New TextEdit
Window Containing Selection" with a shortcut, you can just use Command-A to
select all in your Safari window, then apply the shortcut for "New TextEdit
Window Containing Selection" that you assigned, and do your find and selection
from TextEdit, which most people find easier. I don't mean to encourage bad
habits, because you should be able to do your finding and selecting in Safari
with VoiceOver, but this should work for you.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Interacting did not work for me either, but It did work for me in safari at

strips out the non-text elements, as a simple copy and paste does not. For
similar reasons, you can use this to read embedded tables and lists in
documents in Pages, Nisus Writer Pro, etc. by selecting the page and
applying the shortcut, since it transforms the embedded material to text,
and lets VoiceOver read out the table directly.

Re: copying large chunk of text from safari.

2011-12-19 Thread Esther
Hi David,

This works for me in Safari, Webkit, and all other apps, but I'm running Safari
5.05 under Snow Leopard. The shortcut I'm using is Command-Option-Shift-W.
(There's an extra Command key added here that is absent from your post.) You
can assign any shortcut you like. The reason I post the actual key
combinations I use is that there's a fair chance of running into a conflict
with an existing keyboard shortcut in some other app. That's one of the
reasons why I'm using so many keys in the shortcut definition, since this
Services menu shortcut works in all apps, and not just in Safari. When I first
set up my personalized script to announce time, back in Leopard after
considerable discussion with Paul Hopewell on this list on getting a 24 hour
clock announcement (for the U.S.) with AppleScript (and some other
configuration), I assigned the shortcut Command-Shift-T under Spark. Well,
that shortcut got used in Snow Leopard to put selected Finder items into the
Dock, so I had to make this Command-Option-Shift-T.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

I'll have to try that. I added the shortcut but sometimes selecting with vo
enter fails even after interaction with the area.

Thanks for the tip though.

Re: copying large chunk of text from safari.

2011-12-19 Thread David Griffith
I tried this for ages in Webkit and tonight the key shortcut assignment would
not work. It reported option shift W as the shortcut in the table but actually
pressing these keys after selecting all would not work. I then switched to
Safari and it worked first time so it looks like the recent build of Webkit I
was using has this feature broken.

I will try updating the build tonight to see if works on the very latest Webkit.
Thanks for the tip. At least I know that I can switch to Safari if I want to
have this feature.

Re: copying large chunk of text from safari.

2011-12-19 Thread Esther
Hi Shannon and Others,

I've been using this Services menu option to send selections to TextEdit since
Tiger -- which is the very first version of Mac OS X to support VoiceOver. The
main practical difference in using this in versions starting with Snow Leopard
is that you have to check a box under a table in the Keyboard Shortcuts pane of
System Preferences to determine which items show up under the Services menu.
In Tiger and Leopard, the option automatically appeared under the TextEdit
submenu of Services as "New window containing selection". As Colin stated, my
earlier post gives a link to step-by-step instructions to enable this Services
menu option, and additionally assign a keyboard shortcut.

HTH. Cheers,

Re: copying large chunk of text from safari.

2011-12-19 Thread Esther
Hi Dónal,

You can speed this up even more if, after making sure that the "New TextEdit
Window Containing Selection" option is checked under the Services menu option,
you also assign this a keyboard shortcut. Then you only need to use Command-A
to select all and apply your shortcut. You can find the instructions to set
this up in the archived post I wrote for our list:
• Re: Selecting a block of text from a website on Lion
http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/msg00659.html
I'm using the shortcut Command-Option-Shift-W for this, and this works to send
your selected text to TextEdit from any application. An added bonus is that it
can also be used to read some web sites that are not accessible with VoiceOver
due to bad HTML coding, since using the Services menu option strips out the
non-text elements, as a simple copy and paste does not. For similar reasons,
you can use this to read embedded tables and lists in documents in Pages, Nisus
Writer Pro, etc. by selecting the page and applying the shortcut, since it
transforms the embedded material to text, and lets VoiceOver read out the table
directly.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: copying large chunk of text from safari.

2011-12-19 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hi Donald,
I do this by selecting all the text in the Safari page and then going to the
menu bar and selecting Safari then Services then Save selected text in TextEdit
WIndow. I can then select the desired text from the TextEdit window in the
normal way.

2011-12-19 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Folks,

I need to copy large chunks of text from safari. Is there a way to do this
without interacting with each block of text, selecting it, copying, pasting,
returning to safari and doing the same thing all over again?
