Re: mail busy?
Hello Jessi, First of all, you should always back up your machine or one day, you'll lose everything! Time Machine makes this easy for you so, please think about getting yourself an external hard drive to use as a Time Machine backup. As for your machine running slow, have you repaired permissions lately? If not, open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder (Command- Shift-u). select your HD from the table, select the First Aid tab and click Repair Disk Permissions. It may take ten minutes or more. You could also try zapping the PRAM. To do this, shut down your computer, then hold down Command, Option, p and r and press the Power key. Keep all four keys held down until you've heard the startup chime at least 3 times. Then let go of the keys and your machine will boot normally. Also, check how full your HD is. To do this, do Get Info (Command-i) on the name of your HD, interact with the scroll area and navigate right until you hear Capacity (giving you the size of your HD, then Available (giving you the space available. If your HD is 90% full or mor, you might think about archiving some data on an external HD or some other device. Re: mail busy?
Jessie, have you got an external drive you can back stuff up too? I'm not talking a time machine backup since it seems your looking for more a long-term storage solution, but you can copy the /User/username/ Library/Mail folder to another location. You could always empty your / User/username/Library/Caches folder, which may help. Sorry, I think I missed the thread, but sounds like you just have a lot possibly in your cache, but not knowing the number of e-mails etc, there maybe other issues. Guys, it is an issue and my suggestion is after clicking on a link, give it 10 seconds or perhaps a little less and just interact with the html area. Re: Dictation Software With VO?
Thanks for your note. I use the command and control, Speakable Items for some things but I find it a bit cumbersome to switch from typing very fast, stop, speak and type again. The context switch causes a bit of cognitive dissonance which is a real problem for one's attention. When using dictation software, my mode of input rarely changes so, without the context switching, the flow and, therefore, the efficiency remain high. [There is a lot written and published about the psychology of attention and, if you are interested, you can use google or scholoar.google.com to find lots of good stuff about it.] On Aug 6, 2009, at 3:46 PM, Chris Blouch wrote: Dunno about dictation software but in the meantime you can keep your physical interaction to a minimum using the speech recognition features in the Speech settings of System Preferences. Hopefully somebody else has suggestions for the dictation software. CB Chris Hofstader wrote: Hi, I have a near legendary case of repetitive stress injuries in both hands, wrists, forearms and shoulders. For the work I do, I need to generate a whole lot of text. I tried MacSpeech Dictate and I find that many of its features (especially those borrowed directly from Naturally Speaking for Windows) work poorly with VO. Most especially, I find that the correction related commands are nearly unusable and, if one doesn't keep the Nuance engine (the heart of the MacSpeech product) well trained it will, like its Windows counterpart, start to get pretty weird. This is the only thing that I like better about Vista than OSX/ Leopard. The Microsoft dictation engine works great with System Access and adequately with Window-Eyes (you need to buy a set of scripts from Brian Hartgen to get it to work nicely with JAWS). It is a really nice little dictation utility that works especially well in the Office applications. Are their any other dictation programs out there for Macintosh that we know work well with VO? A few weeks back, I was trying to solve this same issue and I could have sworn that I found a collection of podcasts about VO and dictation but I can't find them now. If this wasn't my imagination, and someone else knows of said podcasts, please send me a link. Re: mail busy?
Yes, mail can be backed up by doing the following: 1. Go to your home folder. 2. Go to library. 3. Go to the folder called mail. 4. Do not open the folder. Just use command c to copy it. 5. go and create a folder with a name like backup archive of my mail or whatever name you like, putting it somewhere you know where it is. 6. Go to the archive folder you just made. Open it, and use command v to put your mail folder there. That is all. I just tried this, as I've been wondering how to do this myself. I brought up the window, interacted with the first table. There are 2 unlabeled tables. I arrowed to bookmarks menu and stopped interacting. I went to the second unlabeled table but its blank. Its not pulling up my bookmarks menu. Any thingts? Getting songs off an iPod
Hi all, I was given an iPod Nano before I got my Macbook. I haven't done anything with it because i don't want to lose what's on it. I want to put the songs on it int my iTunes library. I've heard you need skip for mac or something or other to do this. I also don't want it to delete everything if I hook it up. I've turned off auto sinc in iTunes. I'd like to start using the iPod, keep whats on it, add to it, put whats on it into mylibrary. Any suggestions? Donna, The list windows function in widgets will allow you to switch widgets. The command VO-command-F2 should ask you if you want to close the widget. Re: prices gone up
Hi, In the U.S., some tracks are more expensive than before ($1.29), some tracks cost $.99 as before, and some are cheaper ($.69). So I would guess that in the U.K. some tracks are now cheaper than before as well. Re: Book Resource
Hi Hank, There's a version of Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Leopard edition from O'Reilly Media, Inc. that's available as an iPhone app for $4.99: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=325837189mt=8 I don't know whether this is accessible through VO on the iPhone. From Josh's comments, the ebook versions that are offered through the Stanza app interface aren't quite accessible to VO. (I'm not quite sure what he meant by his impression that they were almost accessible.) However, many ebooks offered as stand-alone apps for the iPhone do seem to be accessible. That said, someone who has an iPhone and is proficient with VO navigation would have to check out how easy it is to navigate to the various chapters, search for text, etc. There's also a version of Pogue's iPhone: The Missing Manual, Third Edition that cover the iPhone 3GS available as an iPhone app for $4.99: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=324601015mt=8 When the last version was released, it was the top selling ebook over the of a few weeks after it was released. I assume this book may be of less use to VO users since it won't cover special tips for using the VO gestures, but it will give general informtion. Again, no information about VO accessibility here. The reason I would love to know whether Stanza is or can be made accessible to VoiceOver on the iPhone is that this is the major competitor for ebook usage to the Kindle, and that there are tons of both free and paid ebooks, all free of DRM, that can use this interface. I've read that some low vision users are using this app on the iPhone. If you look in the list archives, you'll see recommendations to both the O'Reilly books that are availble from Bookshare (including Pogue's Missing Manual series -- not just the volume for switching from Windows) and to the Take Control downloadable ebooks. For example, this November 2008 post even mentions Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Leopard edition as being of possible interest to list members even though it was answering a point of someone who was coming into the Mac from a linux background with a suggestion of another O'Reilly book from Bookshare: http://www.mail-archive.com/discuss%40macvisionaries.com/msg44372.html (Mac OS X for Linux and Unix users) That post details the best way I've found to search for O'Reilly books at Bookshare and also notes that all O'Reilly books are available to international Bookshare users. Since the material is supplied directly from the publisher, who also maintains commercial on-line versions of the book and sells these in (non-DRM) PDF and other ebook formats, the content quality is high, and the available work is up to date. For Les, it's sometimes difficult to check the latest version of a book on Bookshare; you should always click on the title link and check the publish date. I usually also go directly to the O'Reilly pages: http://www.oreilly.com where you can also check whether a new edition may be coming out. Then I look for it in Bookshare. Another really excellent series are the Take Control books. You can try looking at their Take Control of Switching to the Mac: http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/switching These are highly accessible guides in downloadable PDF format that typically list for $10. This format allows the authors to quickly issue updates, and when you purchase a guide you can check for the latest update and download it for free from the Web site until the next major revision (a couple of years later). Chances are, if you're on the mailing list, they'll tell you when the next major release comes out, and offer you a discount. Their web site allows you to download free samples of all their books, so you can see whether the content and style is likely to match your needs. Navigation supports links to relevant sections in Preview. HTH Cheers, Esther P.S. I don't have any of the Windows related Take Control books, but if I decided to install Fusion on my Mac, I would personally get their Take Control of VMWare Fusion. hank smith wrote: any other way to get it besides book share? Re: Mail and Multiple E-Mail accounts
Hi Jeffery,, Mail handles multiple accounts very very well. When you have more than one account, what will happen, is the inbox will be expandable, and you'll see inboxes for other accounts inside of it. f you collapse it, then you'll be able to read email from all of your accounts in one bunch. If you want to read mail from individual accounts, expand the inbox with VO-backslash, and you can go down to the account you want to check, and go over to the messages table. Hope this is of some help. On Aug 7, 2009, at 9:35 PM, JEFFREY SHOCKLEY wrote: Hi al, Gotta a quick question. How well does Mail handle multiple accounts and, how easy is it to manage them? Hi Jeffrey, I have two e-mail accounts, and Mail handles them fine. You can read all your messages in an inbox or see just the ones from one account by choosing its mailbox. You can also easily choose which address to send a particular message from. Re: Mail and Multiple E-Mail accounts
Well, not sure how much of an answer this will be, but I'm currently running 18 different acounts now. Granted they are all gmail acounts, but they seem to do ok. Use rules to move mail from some specific addresses into certain oxes, and rules to move specific e- mail group mails into specific boxes. Also have my e-mail set to check every minute, and it doesn't seem to overwhelm it, but have a relatively fast internet connection as well.
