Thanks.

At least that's how it appears to work here.

Re: strange problem with my MPB15

2010-09-21 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

Just curious. Any technical reason why your not running Snow leopard instead
of leopard?
On Sep 20, 2010, at 11:33 PM, Mark BurningHawk Baxter wrote:

 Hi, folks.

Just now, after an intense session of playing AudioQuake on line, my MBP
running Leopard crashed and wouldn't respond. I shut it down by holding down
the power button, which was the only thing that worked. When I turned it
back on again, it made three short beeps in a row, then repeated this until I
 turned it off again.

Every time I tried to turn it on after that, for the next 15 or so minutes,
it did the same thing; three short beeps and no chime or drive activity.
Then, suddenly, for no reason, it works, and is working fine now.

I couldn't read any error message that might have been displayed during the
malfunctioning time. Any one know what three short beeps and no boot-up
means, and what needs replacing among the hardware or what I need to do? It
sounds serious, and I'm fully backed up, but if my MPB15 (running Leopard,
and VoiceOver was turned *OFF* at the time of this incident) is the only
computer I have and the nearest Apple store is an insane distance from here...
 Thanks for any info! :)

No technical reason; I lost my disks on a recent move and Leopard is
what I have for the moment until I get new ones. Apple Cares cannot,
it seems, find me in their base. I found an article at
support.apple.com which claims that three successive beeps, a five
second pause and three successive beeps means, RAM did not pass data
integrity check. Apparently, I have a faulty RAM chip somewhere. I
have NO clue what to do about this, as I've never had to take this

depending on when that particular RAM is addressed. I'm confused as
to how to fix it.

Copying link in Sendspace Wizard.

2010-09-21 Thread GEOFF WAALER
Greetings,

Nic S once posted that one can copy a link in the SS Wizard by pressing control
while physically clicking the mouse, and the resulting menu would show
command+l as the shortcut.

I first tried command+l and when that failed I turned off trackpad commander
and routed the mouse via VO+Command+F5 before pressing
control+physicalDoubleClick, but have not yet seen a way to copy the file URL.
What am I missing?

TIA for any suggestions.

ABBYY OCR Software

2010-09-21 Thread Scott Howell
Folks,

I was curious if anyone has used the most recent subject software. In
particular does it do well with scanning the text out of a tiff, jpeg, or pdf?
I have a network scanner and previously ABBYY did not work with this type of
arrangement. However, I understand it will perform OCR on files, which would be
find for my purposes. There also was an issue with the software in terms of
setting up the preferences. If this is not the best solution, can someone
recommend one? I did get Readiris with the scanner, but it is 11.0 and only
works with HP scanners. I suspect this version is not only old, but might be
completely inaccessible, so no point in installing junk.

Thanks,

Adding printer in Fusion

2010-09-21 Thread Scott Howell
I have VMWare FUsion installed and I want to add a network printer. I
configured Fusion to use the default printer on the Mac. However, XP (yes I am
forced to use it grin) will not see the printer. THis is an HP CM2320NF
networked printer. Any thoughts appreciated. Previously Fusion did allow xp to
see the OfficeJet I had installed, but that printer is no longer available. So,
what to do?

THanks,

Issue with wireless printing using AEBS

2010-09-21 Thread Hai Nguyen
Good afternoon all,
I have recently upgraded to an Airport Extreme Base Station and it seems to
meet my needs thus far accept for one issue. Currently, I am forced to connect
a USB printer directly with my MBP as I am unable to get the printer to work
consistently when connected to the AEBS via USB. When the printer is connected
to the USB port on the AEBS, print jobs are mysteriously paused and I am unable
to determine any errors. If I attempt to resume the print job, the document
does not print in its entirety. I've managed to resolve the issue by power
cycling all of my equipment, but haven't managed to trace down any consistent
error as this method does not always work. Any thoughts would be much

Hi Mark -- Can you tell us the year and model of your macbook pro? On most
models the RAM is relatively easy to access and we might be able to do some
standard troubleshooting steps such as reseating the RAM modules. Of course, if
your book is still under warranty and you live near an apple store or
authorized service dealer you might want to get it in their hands instead.

Re: ABBYY OCR Software

2010-09-21 Thread Esther

Hi Scott,

Yes, ABBYY will OCR from a file. I'll paste in part of an off-list
post reply to a question about how to OCR an mailed PDF (image) file,
which outlines how you can do this with ABBYY FineReader:

begin quote
What I do in the Quick Tasks window is Navigate (VO-Right Arrow) to
set Get Images From: File (pop up button you VO-Space on --
usually set to a specific scanner), and then VO-Right past Document
Language of English to the Convert to Text button option (first
of the options). Then a dialogue window opens and I navigate to the
PDF document I want. You can use all the usual finder shortcuts for
Command-Shift-H your home directory, Command-Shift-D for desktop,
Command-Shift-O for Documents, etc. You're prompted for where you
want to save the output, and whether you want to open the document
when the OCR is completed.

end quote

The downloadable 15-day trial of ABBYY FineReader Express is available
from:

http://www.abbyy.com/finereader_for_mac/trial/#

Anne's had more experience with scanner software, including ReadIris
(which I think is at version 12), and maybe she can comment.

I really just messed with the Apple Airport Utility and went through the
setup step by step. I noticed that my printer was not initially showing up
listed as a USB connected device in the utility. I really just played around a
little with the settings and shut off the printer and powered it back on. All
of a sudden, Bingo, it was there and I then could print as normal. When I
switched to a wireless printer, it was recognized instantly and it took all of
about ten seconds to get working.

not only old, but might be completely inaccessible, so no point in
 installing junk.

 Thanks,

Exactly just tap the home button. or if this exists tap the home button twice
quickly and double tap and hold on the app you want to close and then double
tap on the app to close it. repeat the double tap for all apps you want to
close. to get out of this mode hit home and home again if you want to return

Re: Pandora on the Mac

2010-09-21 Thread Christina
Hello,

Pandora is so so much easier to use on my iPhone but it can somewhat be used on
the mac. I believe all of your account info should carry among devices but I
could be wrong.

You will have to have someone who is sighted assist you in logging in for the
first time. I think. However once you are set up on your computer you should
be automatically logged in.

If you want to add a new station go to www.pandora.com/backstage and there it's
fairly accessible to search for an artist or song and then you can add the
station from your search results. It's been a really long time since I've done
it on the computer so there's a chance my info is outdated.

Hello Ben, what I wanted or feel that I need is to apple to some how put
some male voices on there ipods and iphone devices. Because I just can't
understand the female ones at all. I have a hearing impairment and have two
hearing aids I just don't understand the pronunciation of the female voices
and it can get very fustrating. I brought an Ipod touch last year for
christmas but I took it back and got my money backpartly due to this issue!
I would love to see Alex on there some how but from what I have heard in the

past I very much doubt it because from what I have heard is that he has a
very big file size. He is the one I mostly understand when I was trying out
the Mac in commet a while ago the next best one I could understand was Fred.
But I hope that clears my expermation up. Basicly to have more male voices
on these devices.

Thanks again Carolyn and Sarah, but there must be another step I'm missing.

 Hi Geoff:
Sometimes when all else fails, I use command shift and arrows or vo+arrows
to select the url, command C to copy, and command V to paste. Otherwise,
attempt to use the data detector menu (vo-shift-m) to bring up choices.

 Greetings,

Nic S once posted that one can copy a link in the SS Wizard by pressing
control while physically clicking the mouse, and the resulting menu would
 show command+l as the shortcut.

I first tried command+l and when that failed I turned off trackpad
commander and routed the mouse via VO+Command+F5 before pressing
control+physicalDoubleClick, but have not yet seen a way to copy the file
 URL. What am I missing?

 TIA for any suggestions.
 Geoff
