Re: sparrow email client for Mac
Hi, I checked it out briefly when it was in beta and guess what? It's not accessible. That is, you can set up accounts no problems, and you can manage preferences and so on, but the mailboxes as well as the messages table are just presented to VO as empty tables. You could try the free one and see if improvements are made, but i doubt it. Furthermore, unless you're on the windows side or Firefox miraculously has been made accessible, you can't send a feedback message to the developers, because there's a bloody captcha that you have to fill in in order for the message to reach the developer. Sorry for bringing you these bad news. I would also love to try out Sparrow. /Krister 10 feb 2011 kl. 00.56 skrev Mary Otten: This email application is new on the Mac app store for $10 bucks. Okay well its a bit like trying to explain the difference between Sendspace and Dropbox I suppose, the differences don't become apparent until you actually use the products. For example, from what I've found out so far Evernote is designed to capture all sorts of things and you can search amongst what you've captured for words or phrases. Interesting to note that the Mac version is far more accessible than the Windows version, what a change! smile. On 11/02/2011, at 1:16 AM, Jane wrote: I have it but I haven't used it. Re: pass word protection and internet filtering
Don't bother with Internet filtering, it's a waste of time and diverts the parenting role away from where it belongs. Speaking as someone who has raised 3 kids successfully and as someone who has had internet longer than most in the home it's just not worth the aggrivation and it builds a lot of distrust. Your kids will just figure out how to circumvent the filters and feel they can't talk to you about what they encounter online because you don't trust them enough to give them access to the computer. Some strategies that do work really well is don't keep the computer in an out of the way location. If the computer is in the middle of the kitchen or family room it's less likely they will visit sites they shouldn't because you or your other adult family members can look over the shoulder. Another thing to do is maybe use some logging software. This way you can see the sites they visit but not have the headache of valid sites being blocked or false positives. More important than all these tips is just talk to the kids. I realize that's the obvious thing to say but it's worth repeating. No filtering software can come close to matching the value of open channels of communication. So save the effort and slap that computer in the family room. Thanks Scott On Feb 10, 2011, at 3:00 AM, Stephanie Mitchell wrote: I have a new imac which I will set up on the weekend. Re: Mod note, off topic posts.
Hello Michael, If you or anyone have concerns over the wording or content of mod notes, please direct them to Cara and/or me privately. We value feedback and all opinions, however the list is not the place for discussion of management policy. Your point that the last message was steered on topic is well taken, and perhaps I could have used better examples, however this does not alter our guidelines in terms of off topic postings. If a person knows an item to be off topic, it does not belong here not withstanding an OT warning in the subject. The fact that many here are familiar with other blindness topics in general is irrelevant because the number of subscribers sadly precludes such flexibility. To reiterate, if you or anyone else have concerns, comments, or suggestions please don't hesitate to direct them to the mod team privately. Thanks and best regards. Re: Mod note, off topic posts.
Actually, Geof, the number of subscribers is a non issue. I've seen several lists with many factors more members handle OT posts much more effectively by using the tagging method you mentioned. You're assuming that people don't know how to use / configure mail rules. An OT tag makes filtering so much more simple and actually reduces work load for the moderators and non interested users at the same time. What you say goes of course but I'm just pointing out the flaw in your argument. Whether you're right or not we'll follow the requests. Re: IOS Sudoku App Developer seeking suggestions to make his Apps accessible
Brian, Sudoku is and has been an interest of mine for about 4 years, and when I play I use a braille note-taker. I've used a braille lite 40, and now use a braille sense. I prefer the 40 cell display and set up of the braille lite, but can use the sense just as well. The thoughts on this are as follows: 1. Developers for an accessible game will need to consider board enquiries. How do I ask that the information I want to have be read to me. This is where one can get really creative with gestures, but there needs to be a way to read a column, a row, and a square, as well as a way to navigate quicly through the board. So a right, left, up, or down flick of a single finger will move you one square in that direction. A two finger swipe in any direction will trigger a query on the row or column in question. It is a bit beyond me why a player would ask for a column or row to be read from right to left, or bottom to top, but we'll leave this one alone since it gives players more navigational options available to them. A double tap on the last read spot will activate it for editing, entry. A two finger double tap on any spot will trigger a query on that 3 by 3 grid, top left to bottom right. There may be ways to ask the board what numbers are missing from a region, but I think this should be a player's job and thought process when solving the puzzle. One other issue is how fast you want your numbers read to you. I might like to have a .75 second interval between each number spoken, while someone else can go at .4 seconds, and another person might prefer a 1 second pause. this is probably not hard to implement into a settings option that users would change. 2. I do have some thoughts about filling out the grid. A. Double tap on an empty or penciled in spot in which to enter a new number. B. Once the edit field comes up you would have a phone stile pat 1 through 9 that you could double tap to enter your answer. C. Another way to enter your choice once the edit comes up will be to tap as many times as the number you wish to input. After you stop tapping, say a second after you stop tapping, the software would confirm your entry. It might say something like Enter a 2? Double tap for yes, tripple tap for no. I realize this is more cumbersome but could be consider. Option B is admittedly the easiest. Hope these suggestions help. Antonio Guimaraes On Feb 9, 2011, at 8:50 PM, Bryan Jones wrote: Greetings All, For those Sudoku players on the list, I'd like to pick your brains a bit. I've been evaluating IOS Sudoku Apps (more details at the bottom of this email) and have found a good one whose developer is very receptive to making the App accessible and would like some input from the List as to how to best handle the Sudoku Grid. Again, I don't consider myself to be a very creative thinker in this kind of task so I'm hoping some of you can throw out some good ideas. As you probably know, the standard Sudoku grid consists of 9x9 squares, subdivided into 9 smaller 3x3 squares. How do you think VO could best tell us about these squares? Do you want to hear coordinates as in Chess-wise (A1 to H8)? Would you rather hear each 3x3 grid identified uniquely? How would you expect to hear status of pencil marks? Most of these Apps have a separate Number Pad that you use to select the number you want to place on the Grid. Would you expect to first select the number and then select the destination square, or would it make more sense to select the square first and then tap the number pad? Would you want to hear entire rows and columns read? That is the end of the questions for now, but if you're interested in more info, here are some more details regarding my evaluations and these two Apps. I've been evaluating the various free Sudoku Apps and am of course running into the same issue we had with chess prior to Chess-wise being updated; that is, the Sudoku Grid is inaccessible even if the rest of the game has been properly labeled for VO. While I found one app, Tap Sudoku that has a semi-accessible grid, the rest of the App needs lots of work. I've been unsuccessful in my attempts to contact the Developer of Tap Sudoku and, in fact, the developer website appears to be just a marketing site. Prior to starting my search I had asked Marcel Nijman if he was interested in developing an accessible Sudoku App, since he has been so good to work with through the process of making his other Apps accessible. Marcel respectfully declined saying he wanted to focus on upgrading his current group of Apps. He did however suggest trying the Sudoku Tablet App as he said it looks like a well-designed App. I've tested Sudoku Tablet for the iPad and it's sister App, iSudoku for all IOS devices. While their grids are not accessible, they both have excellent labeling and navigation for VO. I contacted the Developer, Wolfgang Tumler, and like

Re: Voiceover in mail
Hello, To expand on Sarah's comment about using the Shift key to select, you can use VO-F6 to check which items are selected. This is particularly useful when you are selecting items in a list non-contiguously, and want to review them. This woks quite generally for selections of all sorts (e.g., files in Finder, messages in Mail, tracks in iTunes). You can read an archived list post on selecting non-contguous items and checking on the selection here: http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg13774.html To read down the thread to my additional comments, press Control+n (for next post in thread). Control+p will let you read the previous post in the archived thread. Re: IOS Sudoku App Developer seeking suggestions to make his Apps accessible
Hello, I do not think braille should be considered just yet when making a sudoku app. Are these apps to be run on a mac, or iPhone? Either way I see no need to read grids at all times, only when the player makes a region query as I suggested. I bet some developer out there may be able to retrofit their existing app with VoiceOver features you may furnish. Try it I say, or you'll never know how far the developers are willing to go. I really need to go study up on Sudoku because I have an interest, but not enough knowledge to completely understand all the aspects of the board. However, setting aside Braille for the minute, we need to consider what is possible without rewriting the entire interface. Not trying to pea on your parade, but perhaps looking at this from the perspective of what is instead of what we wish could be. DOes that make sense? I just think if we approach the developer with all of these ideas of changing the interface, he bay balk at the idea. Do you feel there is another approach? Do you think the coordinates are necessary? Just trying to think through this. Scott On Feb 10, 2011, at 6:05 PM, Antonio M. GPS Apps
Before even getting into the question I wish to ask on this post, let me stop and acknowledge that I am indeed aware of the fact that the word best, so often used, is just a four letter word incapable of nearly anything. With that being said, I will be receiving my iPhone tomorrow and wish to fill it full of delicious apps. I would like one of the apps to be a GPS package. At this point, I have arrived at three possible conclusions via friends, this list, and the Applevis web site. I am considering the Garmin app, Navigon, and Tomtom, the latter mainly because I hear it's accessible and the primary rival to Navigon. What are the benefits for each app? Why should I choose one over the other? I know that the Garmin app doesn't locally store map information and the maps are constantly updated as well as traffic and weather information. How does Navigon compete with this? Are there updates to Navigon's maps? Does it provide the same type of information? And what of Tomtom? Does it store maps locally or are they accessed remotely like Garmin? Another reason I am undecided is that Garmin looks the most impressive, yet it is only ever Tomtom and Navigon about which I hear-so is there some drawback to Garmin which prevents it from competing on the same level? I read on the Applevis web site that Garmin is very accessible, as well as Navigon. Any information is welcome-if I have to have multiple solutions, I guess I could do that, but it would be much easier just to depend on one. Finally, does it really matter that much which app I decide to use? Is one essentially as good as the other? Any input would be appreciated-no matter how lengthy (I would even prefer lengthy smile). Thanks, Robert Hooper hooper...@buckeyemail.osu.edumailto:hooper...@buckeyemail.osu.edu The Ohio State University 553 Morrill Tower 1900 Cannon Drive Columbus, Ohio 43210 (740) 856-9435 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: IOS Sudoku App Developer seeking suggestions to make his Apps accessible
I *strongly disagree. The easiest way to work a sudoku is with braille. Why on earth would you cut that out? Donna On Feb 10, 2011, at 9:57 PM, Antonio M. Guimaraes Jr. wrote: Hello, I do not think braille should be considered just yet when making a sudoku app. Antonio Guimaraes On Feb 10, 2011, at 7:35 PM, Scott Howell wrote: Woe, this all sounds good Antonio; however, we're talking about modifying an existing game, not reinventing one. The various gestures would require a substantial amount of recoding even if it would be possible. What your talking about may even be beyond VO's abilities at this point. Guimaraes Jr. wrote: Brian, Sudoku is and has been an interest of mine for about 4 years, and when I play I use a braille note-taker. Re: pass word protection and internet filtering
Hi Steph, Don't sweat the porn thing. A lot of it requires a credit card anyway so kids won't get far. If you block off porn using a lot of the standard packages you'll block non porn sites that you want them to actually have access to. One example of this is whitehouse.gov. THere's a whitehouse.com and some other white house variants that trigger a filter on whitehouse.gov which kids might visit for example for research on the executive branch etc. The other factor to consider is if you block it off you create an unnatural interest. I'll just say as a young man nothing got my attention more than someone putting a block in the way of something. I circumvented everything ranging from the first scrambled cable channels to military computer systems and yes even the child locks on the TV later on. Like I said, having the computer out in the kitchen or living room in front of mom and country limits the kids interest in porn anyway hahaha. Understand I'm not questioning your parenting it's just I've owned 2 ISPs and provided access to thousands of families and schools so it's an issue I'm familiar with and I see a lot of companies and individuals cashing in on fear that has no basis in reality. Some good free methods do far better and enforce some of the better parts and attitudes in the family. Enjoy and good luck with what ever solution you go with. Re: Report: Apple making cheaper iPhone to fight Google
do you relally thint hat tey would toss voiceover? apple seems commited to accesibility for everyone more than anything else, even their cheaptest i pod has vo now, so i relaly can not see them not having vo. I also believe creating a different os would be more expensive. i suspect we will loose gps or the camera or something like that. perhaps no front facing camera and maybe a low res or monochrome screen? i can't wait, if I can get an I phone cheaper than an I pod touch I'll jump on it with no contract as long as it still has gps as accessible gps is one of th ebiggest reasons i ant one On Feb 10, 2011, at 11:39 PM, brandt wrote: Hi there, Usually in cheeper models of stuff, weather it be iPhone or car, something goes by the wayside. Re: update on the xmradio site
just one reason I am not an xm subscriber anymore they do not care about accessibility. and they keep raising their princes while adding commercials to some stations and wasting slots with copies ofterrestrial broadcasters as many of us said before it happens sirius and xm being allowed to merge was a total srew up by the fcc and the ft and we loose at least with both there was some competition On Feb 11, 2011, at 2:00 AM, chad wrote: hi guys i have an update on the xmradio site i spoke with a listener care rep he said they won't go back to the previous version of the player just waiting for pulsar to come out with a update right now can't listen online at all sucks rogueameba e mailed and there aware of the pulsar issue there working on it that's my only solution for listening thanks -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group.
