Skype questions

2012-12-23 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi All,

I am wondering if anyone knows the answer to the following. How do you delete
voicemails with the latest version of Skype? Also, do you know if any Skype
Phone is accessible with either VoiceOver or it's own built-in speech? THank
you for any help. I live in Spain and use my SKype number a lot.

Sincerely,
Allison

Re: slightly OT: Digit-Eyes

2012-12-23 Thread Nancy M
The good news is that it is not $30 -- the price or the entire package was
reduced to $19.95 earlier this year

You can also buy just the part you need if you don't need the whole thing.

If you want only one function (labeling), you can actually use the free
version and make text labels; if you want to use audio recording, that is
$9.99 and if you want just UPC recognition, that is also $9.99

If you have an iPhone 4 or 5 and there is not enough light, we use the
flash that is build into the phone; if you have a 3gs, we warn you if there
is not enough light to scan by.

Re: slightly OT: Digit-Eyes

2012-12-23 Thread Alex Hall
I went ahead and bought the whole thing, which I now see wasted $10 since I'll
never need audio labeling. Too bad iTunes can't do refunds... Ah well.

Anyway, I've had limited success scanning bar codes. Even when I know where the
code is supposed to be, it can be slow getting the app to recognize it, and if
I'm not sure then I can spend minutes and never find the code at all. If the
app could do one thing better, it would be bar code recognition. I know you're
doing your best and are limited by the hardware, but if anything can be done to
improve this process... Thanks. My next project is making or buying some
clothing labels and going crazy labeling everything I have. :)

Re: Spotlight

2012-12-23 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

If you know exactly what your looking for, and its a file/folder/app you use
often, I think the dock is a better way to go than spotlight. I say this
because, your dock is customizable. You can just have what you want in there.
So, for example, If I want to open garageband, I go to the dock with VO D and
press the letter G and press enter. using spotlight, yes, the garageband app
would more than likely show up in the results but, I'd probably have to type
more than the letter G, and then I would have to actually sort through the
results which would probably contain e-mails, files, and web sites I've
visited. Now, If I was using a machine that wasn't my own or, I'm looking for
a missed placed file or e-mail, I would certainly use spotlight.

Re: updating iTunes library?

Hi,

I really would have erased duplicated from the iTunes app itself. But, the
only way I know how to know wich one to know clear from your iTunes is to try
to play it. The one that you erased from the directory will prompt a dialog
telling you the file has been moved or, something along those lines.

Re: Spotlight

2012-12-23 Thread Alex Hall
I think it's what you like, and neither the dock nor spotlight is better than
the other for opening apps or folders you use all the time. Spotlight is a
keystroke, a key or four, then the thing you want is almost always first, at
least for apps. The dock is a keystroke, a letter or two, then enter. So the
dock is a bit faster, but only if you've taken the time to add what you want to
it, which people don't always do. I tend to use the dock more, but that's just
me.

I think it's what you like, and neither the dock nor spotlight is better

enter. So the dock is a bit faster, but only if you've taken the time to add
what you want to it, which people don't always do. I tend to use the dock
 more, but that's just me.

 Hi,

If you know exactly what your looking for, and its a file/folder/app you

this because, your dock is customizable. You can just have what you want
in there. So, for example, If I want to open garageband, I go to the dock
with VO D and press the letter G and press enter. using spotlight, yes,
the garageband app would more than likely show up in the results but, I'd
probably have to type more than the letter G, and then I would have to
actually sort through the results which would probably contain e-mails,
files, and web sites I've visited. Now, If I was using a machine that
wasn't my own or, I'm looking for a missed placed file or e-mail, I would
 certainly use spotlight.

Re: Parallels or Fusion for running virtualized OSX with Voiceover?

2012-12-23 Thread Chris Blouch
Second this. OSX is pretty good about not allowing one user on one
account to mangle things for another user on another account. I suspect
you'll be much happier running native on just another account that you
use for development.

Fwd: Unable To Install Windows On My Mac At All

2012-12-23 Thread Gavin Grundlingh
Hi all,

I'm forwarding a message I tried to send to this list last week. Please let me
know if it gets through.

Begin forwarded message:

 From: Gavin Grundlingh g.batw...@gmail.com
Subject: Unable To Install Windows On My Mac At All
 Date: 17 December 2012 11:38:37 PM SAST

 Hi all,

I'm not sure if I've written about this here before, but I'm having one hell
of a time trying to install Windows on my Mac, the biggest problem being that
my internal superdrive no longer works. I'll explain what I've tried so far
 in more detail below:

First, because my superdrive is broken, I tried using 2 external USB DVD
drives. One was an LG that worked with AC power, the other was powered purely
by USB, but I don't know its make or model. In both cases, I could select the
Windows DVD as a startup disk in System preferences. However, the LG AC
powered drive hung on the Press any key to boot from CD or DVD message,
while the USB only drive Skipped booting from the disk entirely. This
happened both when trying to install Windows to a Bootcamp partition, and
when changing the partition map scheme of my internal hard drive to MBR and
trying to install the way you would on a traditional PC, which, just so
everyone is aware, actually does work. I did it in January of this year when
my Superdrive was still functional, and had no problems.

Next, I created and booted from a CCC backup, downloaded and installed
VirtualBox, and used its command line interface to create a vmdk file that
would give me raw disk access to my internal hard drive. I used VMWare Fusion
to create a new, custom virtual machine, then edited its configuration file
to include the vmdk file with raw disk access. I was able to boot the virtual
machine from both DVD drives, so I went through the Windows install process
until I got to the desktop. I Rebooted the Mac from the internal drive, and
got all the way to Starting Windows before the computer restarted itself
and went to the Startup Repair screen. I told Windows to fix whatever it
thought the problem was, but no luck. It did the same thing. So I started up
from my external hard disk, booted the virtual machine and reran the
installer from within Windows itself, thinking that my previous attempt may
have failed due to hardware changes that occur when running Windows virtually
ass opposed to natively. I hoped that, by running the first part of the
install that copies the files from the DVD to the hard drive, then rebooting
the machine completely and finishing the install on the native Mac hardware,
all the correct components would be detected. Well, that was, and still is,
merely a nice thought. I got as far as Setup is loading files and Starting
Windows when I rebooted, then got a Windows was unable to start the
installation error and an OK button. I pressed it, the computer restarted,
and came up with the same error.

Lastly, I tried using a flash drive created with the Windows 7 USB DVD
download tool to install from, but the Mac wouldn't boot from that either. I
installed the rEFIt boot manager and used that to boot from the flash drive,
 but still had no success.

I'm at my wit's end here. Is the Mac seriously that full of crap about the
devices it boots from? I've reset the parameter RAM, reset the SMC, checked
for possible software updates, used different flash drives and Windows DVD's,
but none if that seems to make any difference. I don't have, or know anybody
who has, access to an Apple USB superdrive, so I can't confirm whether or not
that will work. Does anyone know how I could possibly resolve this? I need
the resources on this Mac for large sample libraries i want to run, and my PC
just doesn't have enough power. Thanks for all the help you guys provide.
 It's very much appreciated.

Re: Wire Shark and x-11

2012-12-23 Thread Emrah
You have tcpdump and ngrep you can use from the terminal.
tcpdump might already be installed and as for ngrep, you need to go through
macports.

ngrep example:
ngrep '' host 192.168.1.3
will capture everything exchanged with host 192.168.1.3

ngrep -W byline '' host 123.123.123.123 and port 53
Will capture everything exchanged with 123.123.123.123 port 53 and format it
nice and by line
