Re: Audio description app for IOS

2014-06-01 Thread Steve Holmes
The Movie Reading app is the one you're looking for. You have already found it
though, based on your earlier messages in this thread. Problem now is Solo DX,
the original developers of this app have gone belly up. the better news is that
apparently another group is going to offer a similar service. I'm not sure if
they will pick up with this app or start over with something else. I forget the
name right now. I think there are a couple groups getting into this game so I
hope somebody gets going with a successful business model so we can have
something more reliable.

Hi,
Thanks for letting me know the company is no more. I'm glad I didn't spend

Re: Audio description app for IOS

2014-06-01 Thread Steve Holmes
I don't know if or how much would be charged for the description, but somebody
may have to pay for the on-going app development, servers, etc. These other
guys offered it for free and guess what happened. they went broke! That's
right, they're broke. You have to have a viable business model to keep
something like this going. You can't rely on grants; ads suck; at least, I
don't like invasive ads so I'm willing to pay for such things if reasonably
priced. One idea is that the movie industry should underwrite the cost of
distributing video description. In fact, some theater chains are offering
description for no additional charge. But if it can only be done by a 3rd party
company, then they need to stay in business some how and we may as well step up
to the plate to offer support to the same.

Re: LastPass and Safari - Major Problem!

2014-06-01 Thread Steve Holmes
Hello folks,

I've been using Safari in full screen mode lately and that has kept LastPass
from grabbing focus all the time but now I'm running into another problem. I
can't seem to open up the vault anymore. When I go into the LastPass screen, I
hit Return or VO-Space on the link to access My vault and nothing opens. Or
at least VO doesn't show me anything new. I thought I was able to access the
vault this way. I'll tell you, Between the difficulty in using LastPass in
Firefox with Orca and Linux and now these problems on the Mac, I think I will
switch to 1Password. Only problem there is they don't have a linux version.

Anyone have better ideas on using LastPass on the Mac now? Sure, it recalls
passwords OK and it allows you to save passwords from the pop-up frame but you
can't manage the vault apparently. In fact yesterday, I was trying to get into
the frame to answer the prompt to save a new password and the LastPass main
panel grabbed focus and I was never able to get back to that original prompt.
For me, this is a mess!

On May 7, 2014, at 9:14 AM, Christina C. blindmaclo...@gmail.com wrote:

Ok, I stopped using last pass a long time ago because of the focus problem.
So, I appreciate this helpful info but I don't understand this full screen
mode. I have avoided full screen mode in Safari because it keeps saying
something about spaces and I always end up loosing that page somewhere in
spaces It also seems that when I go into spaces mode and then move over to
my messages app my computer does all kinds of weird things. For example, I
can be typing in the message text box and suddenly, I start hearing VO make
announcements about spaces and my screen completely changes to something
else. :( I have looked for a setting to turn spaces off but I never found
one. Anyways, I don't understand this spaces thing, I don't understand what
they are for or the benefit of them, nor do I understand why full screen mode
in Safari always means I go into spaces.

 Thanks,

into the menus as usual, and the toolbar is still available as well.

Try Safari preferences, tabs and windows tab. The option is when a new tab or

I hit Return or VO-Space on the link to access My vault and nothing opens.
Or at least VO doesn't show me anything new. I thought I was able to access
the vault this way. I'll tell you, Between the difficulty in using LastPass

Anyone have better ideas on using LastPass on the Mac now? Sure, it recalls
passwords OK and it allows you to save passwords from the pop-up frame but
you can't manage the vault apparently. In fact yesterday, I was trying to get

Hello Everybody,

I spent some time posting about iMud the accessible MUD client for OSX.
Unfortunately due to a new (and very demanding) job I haven’t had the
chance to work on it in the past nine months. It’s a good program and I
feel like it’s needed so I’ve put up a dummy website for people to download
the pre-release beta. It functions sufficiently. I can’t guarantee it’ll be
compatible with everybody’s MAC but I do think it’ll be useable, which is a
good start.

I will continue to work on the project when I have time. The beta will be
free and I will do my best to fix any outstanding issues you may encounter
as quickly as possible. Here’s a direct link to download iMud:

Re: Audio description app for IOS

2014-06-01 Thread Kevin Shaw
Hi list,

If it's all right with the moderator, I'd like to weigh in on this.

I've posted here before about my startup, Zagga Entertainment We're creating a
fully accessible VOD service featuring movies and TV shows with described
video. I started the company when I didn't want to have to put up with the
frustration of navigating silent DVD menus and after I couldn't find audio
description online. I put together a prototype of the site and service I'm
creating and we've made incredible progress over the last year with getting
investors and the studios interested in what we're doing.

Our development is underway and an iOS app is in the works with full VO
compatibility, Airplay support and a secure back end. I recognize that all of
the other solutions that have been tried aren't working very well. The onus
gets put on the studio and there are additional steps in the workflow that are
required to make other apps work. It's not just description that suffers, it's
language dubs, closed captioning, versioning for foreign distribution and so
on. I've got a background in this as someone who's worked in the media business
for a long time.

Right now, we're crowd funding to make the full version of our site happen.
It's our way of letting our investors know that there's a demand for a service
like this. In my meetings with these guys, they fall over in shock when i pull
out my iPhone to show them how their own video apps aren't accessible or their
Flash-based websites that feature described video films can't be operated with
Voiceover. They know there's a need for this service and want to help us. I
want to help us.

If you haven't checked it out already, here's the link t our crowd funding
campaign:

http://igg.me/at/zagga

You can test drive our prototype player at http://zagga.tv.

Feel free to bug me. I'm glued to my Macbook Pro. Email ke...@zagga.tv and I'd
be happy to talk about this with you off list.

Thank you and I hope we can get something going that will benefit blind people
and their friends and families.

These other guys offered it for free and guess what happened. they went
broke! That's right, they're broke. You have to have a viable business model
to keep something like this going. You can't rely on grants; ads suck; at
least, I don't like invasive ads so I'm willing to pay for such things if
reasonably priced. One idea is that the movie industry should underwrite the
cost of distributing video description. In fact, some theater chains are
offering description for no additional charge. But if it can only be done by
a 3rd party company, then they need to stay in business some how and we may
as well step up to the plate to offer support to the same.

iTunes cannot import CDs

When I put a CD in my Mac Mini, it appears in Finder and iTunes. I have iTunes
set to import and eject. No matter what CD I try, it finishes importing them
and it ejects them. THe problem is, all it has imported is the title of each
song on the CD. They are all about 3 KB in size and have no audio. They are in
the iTunes library, but are useless. I've tried to do them as iTunes Plus and
as MP3 files. I've used the AAc encoder and the MPEG encoder. Does nayone know
why this is happening?

I'm getting the same error as well.

The app was probably compiled for an earlier version of OS X or different

Re: LastPass and Safari - Major Problem!

2014-06-01 Thread Steve Holmes
OK, I see it now. Still, I wish the vault was a table or something; then I
could skip all the links for each site and just navigate up and down the column
of site names. See, I love table navigation in screen readers.

I found the vault tab but I had to keep Safari maximized because the LastPass
primary panel grabbed my focus once again sigh.

I think I would still switch to 1Password if I could find a way to use it on
Linux. But this will do for now. Their iOS app is quite good though.

I hit Return or VO-Space on the link to access My vault and nothing opens.
Or at least VO doesn't show me anything new. I thought I was able to access
the vault this way. I'll tell you, Between the difficulty in using LastPass
in Firefox with Orca and Linux and now these problems on the Mac, I think I
will switch to 1Password. Only problem there is they don't have a linux
 version.

Anyone have better ideas on using LastPass on the Mac now? Sure, it recalls
passwords OK and it allows you to save passwords from the pop-up frame but
you can't manage the vault apparently. In fact yesterday, I was trying to
get into the frame to answer the prompt to save a new password and the
LastPass main panel grabbed focus and I was never able to get back to that
original prompt. For me, this is a mess!

spaces It also seems that when I go into spaces mode and then move over
to my messages app my computer does all kinds of weird things. For example,
I can be typing in the message text box and suddenly, I start hearing VO
make announcements about spaces and my screen completely changes to
something else. :( I have looked for a setting to turn spaces off but I
never found one. Anyways, I don't understand this spaces thing, I don't
understand what they are for or the benefit of them, nor do I understand

Yes, this is due to the fact you aren't running OSX 10.8+ I can send you a

Hi Jonathan. Well, when I went into windows explorer like you said, sure enough
all my network computers were there. Now, when I go to network, they are
showing up there so whatever happened it is working now. Thanks. :)

Hi Brent, I couldn't tell you what the problem is, but just writing to say
I'm not experiencing this. I can access all the computers and devices on my
network using Windows Explorer under Fusion.
There are quite a few tweaks you can make to Fusion's networking. The other
day I worked out how to give the Windows VM its own internal IP address, which
is great when you want to run Windows server applications and you need a unique
internal IP for port forwarding.
I've found their online Knowledge Base to be really good.

sees those computers fine. It is just when I am on the vm ware fusion windows

to do something in order to get it to see my network? Thanks in advance.

That was a random issue in Mountain Lion, I believe. I haven't noticed it at

I've consistently had this problem under Mavericks on my MacBook Air, if
that reassures you any. Going into key help I can press it repeatedly fine,
but some buttons don't take it the first press.

Re: Extreme iTunes Frustration: Someone please Assist

2014-06-01 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

On your iPhone, in the iTunes AppStore section of your Settings, is Music set
to Off under the Automatic Downloads area? If this is set to On, then all
new purchases done on other devices, including your Mac, will automatically be
downloaded to your iPhone as soon as they are purchased.

Regarding your second issue, how are you navigating through the grid? Make
sure to use VO keys along with the arrow keys and see if you see more albums.

Re: mp3 splitter and mp3 to m4b converter?

2014-06-01 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Fission will certainly do the job for splitting and is VO friendly. Do you
mean to change to m4b as in Book or m4a for Audio? If you are talking
about books, then you may wish to try AudioBook Builder. If you meant audio,
this is easily done within iTunes itself.
