Learning Ally

2016-01-24 Thread Ben J. Bloomgren
Grant, Chris and all,

You have reawakened my interest in RFB, which is my oldtimer's name for
Learning Ally! Thanks tons for this tip about the Security and Privacy tab. One
thing that we must now do is to make the company know full well that they must
not get rid of this piece of software. All that they need to do is to update
their documentation.

2016-01-24 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
Yes thats true.
I guess i am one of those audiophiles out there who just wants good quality.
But to be honest i can not hear whether bluetooth or airplay has some
differences.
Nor can i hear differences from apple music and spotify.
But as long as the sound fits my need i am happy.
Hope this is ok.

Is it just me, or has anyone noticed that with the latest I O S update, and no,
I’m not speaking of a beta. This is completely with the official latest build,
that Voiceover gets ridiculously ridiculously sluggish? I’ve not tested all
the voices, but at least with the high quality female Siri voice, it’s very
noticeable on my IPhone 6S.

I just rebooted the phone, but I’m not seeing much improvement.

I’m finding this is happening most often in the Messages app, although it’s
happenning globally. It just seems to be the worst there.

Before anyone asks, No, I do not have much in my app switcher. In fact, I
don’t think there’s anything running with the exception maybe of the Messages
app, and maybe the Audible app, although even when I close either of those, the
problem doesn’t seem to go away.

Chris.

RE: Headphone bug still exists on the I phone.

This sounds like a great workaround.

Although I have not had to use it, I will definitely file it for the future.

Thank you for posting.

Hi Kawal. One workaround for this is to go into
settings/general/accessibility/call audio routing and setting it to bluetooth
rather than auto. If you don't have the bluetooth headset switched on, the
audio still goes through the phone's earpiece as usual, but if the bluetooth
headset is on, you can use them to make the call as expected. Hope this helps?

RE: Headphone bug still exists on the I phone.

2016-01-24 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Kawal, E.T., and Everyone,

Perhaps this is a brand-specific bug?

I have absolutely no problem making, receiving, or switching between telephone
calls using my Plantronics Voyager Edge Bluetooth earpiece. I am running iOS
9.2.1 on an iPhone 6 Plus.

Also, I have checked with a couple of people who are running the Plantronics
Voyager Legend models on 9.2.1 and they, too, report no problems.

It's a very old but fully accessible and fully featured cd writing program for

I know I've discussed this previously

2016-01-24 Thread Jim Gatteys
Hi all!
I know I've discussed this previously but I need help with pages templates.
I have not really pursued this till now but I am going to need to create and
use templates in pages to get some work done.
If I go to pages and open a template, let's say business envelope, I see things
that say place holder and other text that seems to be part of the template.
How can I tell where to type in relation to the place holder? What would be
the easiest way to tell if the formatting is as I think it should be? Will
that place holder info print as part of my envelope or will it not be
printable? I realize this is basic information but I can't seem to grasp using
templates. I like other aspects of using pages but this seems to be beyond me.
Also, does anybody know of any info on using tables in pages or is it just
trial and error? If I specify a cell size will the text expand that cell or
stop when the cell is full?

I wonder if this is something that apple accessibility might be able to help
with.
Thanks for any help.
Jim

I recently purchased Writer but hadn’t started using it. Based on my

Writer earlier. I am usually reluctant to criticize an app in a public
forum, preferring instead to first see if the problem isn’t at my end,
i.e. that I am missing something basic.

Anyway, thanks for the tip about using Writer. I’ll start using it today.

Surrender. Just choose to “Install tonight”. It’ll update, but now you don’t
have to be there to watch it happen, and get all angry about it. It’ll all be
over when you next look. Apple wins. Again.

The license agreement shows up just before it commences the install, so
presumably you’ll just be asked again to accept it, just before the install,
when you are next prompted. It’s a nice thought though that Apple might
considerately avoid asking you again if you should disagree. But this is
Apple, so, I’m not very optimistic about it.

Re: Connecting external mic

2016-01-24 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Did you visit System Preferences, Sound, Input tab, and make sure that the
audio is set for use as Line In? Obviously, the audio output from the mic will
need to be good enough for you to hear it if you’re going to use VO during this
process. But once it’s done, now you should have (line-level, not mic-level)
input on your audio jack, and speaker output as usual.

For plug-in microphone operation, get an additional sound card or mic. Macs
don’t (and, owing to their close connection to the professional market,
probably never will) have mic-level input.

2016-01-24 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
If restarting the phone normally and leaving it overnight doesn’t work, just
force reset it (Home+Power for 10 seconds). That should kick Spotlight into
obedience. Sometimes it happens that the mds process gets seriously stuck and
consumes 100% CPU. Give it a shot.

I’m surprised that Time Machine wasn’t more vocal about the fact that it

Re: I know I've discussed this previously

2016-01-24 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Jim,

I almost didn’t read your message because the subject line did not reference
Pages.

If your needs aren’t very urgent, my husband and I have a book coming out
fairly soon on Pages with VoiceOver and it will answer all your questions.

There are problems currently with placeholder text and VoiceOver. Just using
the right or left arrows should highlight placeholder text but this is not
working properly with the current version of Pages and El Capitan. You need to
turn VoiceOver off before selecting the placeholder text and then turn
VoiceOver back on again. Obviously, I’ve reported this to Apple Accessibility.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Braille on the Mac

2016-01-24 Thread erik burggraaf
Well, no but neither would perkyduck. They're just keyboards. That would be
great for her own practice, but wouldn't give her visual representations of
dots. Duxbury would automatically translate to braille on windows. Louis or
Brailleblaster would do on mac, but that would be kind'a cheeting. You know,
the very best thing for this purpose would be to loan or buy a perkins
brailler. Vision aids sometimes has used ones on consignment. They often
appear on blindbst and free enterprise as well for between $250 and $350.
Also, if she is still doing work for the Helen Keller centre, they may have a
perkins they would be willing to loan out to her for a few weeks.

2016-01-24 Thread John Panarese
I have not been following this thread entirely, but this setting is now in
the Security and Privacy preferences of System Preferences in the Privacy tab.
You have to enable Assistive devices there.

Re: Question about Learning Alley L A Book Manager

2016-01-24 Thread Chris Gilland
I wish I’d gotten help a bit sooner, admittedly, but that said, yes, Grant did
direct me to that very place in his e-mail. Things are absolutely working
perfectly now! I just hope that they’re not going to do away with the Book
Manager on the mac side of things like they clamed they were going to do.

If this is what is making them decide not to continue it, then we all as
members need to call them first thing on Monday, and let them know to update
the outdated documentation, and not pull it at a future date. Truth be, once
you authorize the app, even in El Capitan, it works phenomenally!

Chris.

I see that they have a mac version of the Learning alley Book Manager. I
know it's not necessary for downloading books, but if I want to play them
on my mac, I'll need it, no doubt, being the books are incrypted.

After installing the book manager, and launching it, I get a message
saying I need to go into System Preferences, and then tab down to the

Well, obviously, there is no such thing in El Capitan as Universal Access.
Yeah, under System prefs, there is the accessibility payne, but even
under there, none of the categories within the table give you the option
to allow access to assistive devices. I definitely do see 3 buttons in
that message given by the Book Manager. I have an option to continue

Yes, this is the most recent version of the software. It has to be, as I
just downloaded it from the Learning Alley web site this morning.

Suffice it to say, if L A can't get their crap together more than this,
I'm probably gonna cancel my membership. When I called their support,
they were incredibly unhelpful. They told me they had no user guide for

Re: Question about Learning Alley L A Book Manager

2016-01-24 Thread Chris Gilland
Normally, yes, I’d agree. The only reason I don’t agree with you in this one
case is, I think it’s needing to somehow grab API’s from both Voiceover and
from, most likely, Apple Script. It can’t do that though being those are
different components than what are built into the app to start with. For this
reason, OSX is actually doing you a favor by not allowing it by default.

I see where you’re coming from, trust me, I do. Again, in most 99.999 cases,
I’d agree with you whole heartedly.

I’d beg to say in this case though, it’s most likely a harmless thing. Now,
that also being said, why Learning Alley in the first place thought they had to
make the app this way? I’m sure there is a reason we don’t get, but I agree it
seems a little odd.

Anyway, I’m not the programmer, so who am I to judge?

Chris.

Kawal,
If you mean the Bluetooth connection is lost when a call is made,
yeah. I was not even aware it was a bug for I kept forgetting to look
into it. Is it still present in cersion 9.2.1? I am afraid to try it.
Its time to send a note to Apple and remind them. I will do that right now.

This was a change made in Yosemite announced in summer 2014. It is inexcusable
that there is not at least a daw listing this change. I also consider this a

Re: Question about Learning Alley L A Book Manager

2016-01-24 Thread Brent Harding
I thought I remember back in those early days that it was recommended to turn
that preference on if you were going to use VO. I think some of that kind of
thing might come down to a copyright thing to make sure that only blind people
can use the app. If they use the api's directly instead of making a normal app,
they can make sure the wrong people hopefully don't use it, but then if they
don't have a login and password, there'd be no way for them to download.

After installing the book manager, and launching it, I get a message

Yes, this is the most recent version of the software. It has to be, as

Re: Question about Learning Alley L A Book Manager

2016-01-24 Thread Grant
I don’t think this preference has to do with VO, despite being labelled as
“accessibility”. In fact, I don’t believe it has anything to do with whether or
not an app is going to be accessible, or with what we normally consider to be
“accessibility features".

I think this setting simply authorizes, or not, apps to control your computer
using certain scripts and commands which happen to also be used for
accessibility purposes. The setting would probably be less confusing if the
word “accessibility” was taken out of the name, and it was renamed something
like “advanced control” or something much more generic.

Here are a couple examples of what I mean:

-Karabiner, an app many of us use to remap keys on our keyboards, supports
per-application key mappings. It it needs access to those accessibility
permissions in order to do things like observe when the window title changes.
Regardless of who uses Karabiner, they need to grant those permissions in order
for the app to work correctly.

-Dropbox also requests access to these controls. I’m not sure what it uses them
for, but you can find much discussion about this on Dropbox’s forums.

Here’s a slightly outdated Apple support article explaining these controls:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202802

Now, why a book management application needs access to these features is a bit
beyond me, but I’m sure it serves some purposes. Hope this all makes sense!

Yeah, I could get it on cable, but there’s no cable jack in the room I’m

Re: How to stop automatic downloads of IOS updates?

2016-01-24 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hello.

I have been thinking about this thread as I was talking to a friend who is on
this list earlier on as he was helping me with my Draytech 330. So my thought
was you could not agree to the terms and conditions and then that may stop
automatic download.

 Grant,

With all due respect, read the earlier messages in this thread. The
problem is that my friend's cellular provider is also his ISP. He has a
shared data pool for both wifi and cellular. So theoretically, yes, he
could run around the house every night turning wifi off on all his devices
so that nothing ever downloaded, but that's a really dumb solution to a
problem that wouldn't exist were Apple not trying to force people into
something they didn't want to do. Actually, Sabahattin's article helped.
What my friend did do was block all Apple domains from his home IP. It's
a pretty radical solution that should not be necessary, but hopefully one
 that will work for him.
 Cheers,
 Donna

Re: Connecting external mic

2016-01-24 Thread Donna Goodin
Strange. I just tried it with a second mic. That one had separate jacks for
input and output. When I plug in the output jack, everything behaves as
expected and the sound from the mac is routed through the headphones. But when
I plug in the input jack, I have the same problem as before. Very weird.

Thanks for trying to help.

Re: Connecting external mic

2016-01-24 Thread Marshall Scott
Hi,
I'm not exactly sure of the details but the 3.5 audio jack on Mac computers is
different from other types of headsets. I think it may have to do with the
audio controls on the Apple headsets.

trying to use an external microphone with my MBA for the first time

2016-01-24 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

I'm trying to connect an external mic to my MBA. When the mic is connected,
the MBA seems to be trying to route the output through the mic, but not
recognizing it as an input source. When I select the input tab in System
Prefs, the only option I see is the internal mic. Anyone know what might be
going on and/or what I need to do to fix it?
TIA,
Donna

Re: How to stop automatic downloads of IOS updates?

2016-01-24 Thread Donna Goodin
That's an interesting idea. So if you just caught it at the first announcement
of the update and refused the terms, would it prevent the automatic download?
It seems like that might actually work. I'll suggest that my friend give it a
try and report back. That's a very creative solution! :)
Cheers,
Donna

 Hey Donna,

My bad. I did miss the fact that your friend is using a cellular provider

Blocking all Apple domains at the router level definitely should do the
trick, but he may wish to test his devices as I’d guess tons of other
critical Apple services won’t work either. I wonder if there’s a subdomain
he could block instead that might not be so drastic. It certainly would be
nice to have a way of turning off automatic downloads of iOS updates.

Re: Headphone bug still exists on the I phone.

2016-01-24 Thread Thuy Mallalieu

Yes, there is something about how specific Mac models handle audio input.
You might need to call upon the Google search gnomes to research this.

RE: Game tonight?

2016-01-24 Thread BBS
Hey Chris. If I want to watch sports which I rarely do seeing as how I have
Sirius XM, I go to this website: www.goatd.net. I can find almost anything
there from sports to even Pay Per View events. It may not work on your Apple TV
because it uses flash but you can definitely give it a shot on your Mac.

Re: Question about Learning Alley L A Book Manager

2016-01-24 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
This is essentially correct. I would expect that Learning Ally wrote their
program in Java or another cross platform language. And then discovered it
didn't play nice with VoiceOver so a controller program was written with UI
scripting my concerns are if this often cross platform tools have more
vulnerabilities and especially concerns me that the program has not been
updated in five years.

The Yelp web site is not playing well with voiceover & safari

2016-01-24 Thread Stuart Russell

As of Saturday, the yelp web site is not playing well with voiceover & safari.
When you reach the word “find” while exploring the site, safari hangs up & goes
into busy mode.
I checked with apple support, & they confirmed that the problem was on yelp’s
site.
Perhaps a bunch of us need to contact yelp support & get their attention.
