Re: Does anyone know of a free rss reader for the Mac/

2016-02-01 Thread David Griffith
I think Vienna works very well with Voiceover, at least I have found
nothing that I can't do.

Simply import your RSS feeds via the menu bar.

Then you have to navigate by tabbing to a folder column which is where
your RSS Feeds are listed. Tab into this and you should be able to
navigate your feeds using cursor keys or first letter navigation. Once
on a feed pressing tab again will jump you into the article table. I
have changed the sort under the view menu so that it is descending. This
means that when I tab into the article column I always land on the most
recent article.

Pressing shift tab will return you to the folder column where you can
select another RSS Feed if you want.

There is an html area beyond the article column but this is only part of
the web page normally, the what I do if I want to read an article in
full is press command B in the article column and Safari will open and
load the page. I prefer this as I can use Reader on Safari.

Re: Keyboard Commands

2016-02-01 Thread E.T.
Tab works. What does not seem to work are these shortcuts. Ctrl f7
to change the way Tab behaves and Ctrl f1 to enable or disable full
keyboard access.

And VO shift s to interact with the scroll bars that someone
suggested doesn't work either.

These are not deal breakers but if these shortcuts are enabled in
Keyboard prefs. why are they not working? Am still poking around
preferences to see what is going on.

Hello E.T.,

The full keyboard access setting can also be changed in system
preferences. Select the keyboard button, choose the shortcuts tab, then
use VO+LEFT and VO+RIGHT to navigate through the window and you’ll
eventually find the full keyboard access setting. As well, you might
want to set how the TAB KEY moves through web pages in Safari. That
setting can be adjusted in Safari’s preferences under the advanced button.

As for your query about paging up and paging down, this has been a
concern for me, too, since I started using OS X. I’m not sure what the
best solution is either. As Alex mentioned, holding down an ARROW KEY
will at least move you through a list or text field at a pretty good clip.

In Windows you can page up or down a long list of items. I may not
know what I am looking for or may just want to skip around these long
lists. If the Mac's Page Up and Page Down buttons don't work this way,
what are they for?

Its been a while since I played with full keyboard access in
Yosemite but I remember that I could use the Ctrl f7 combination to
toggle it on and off. That shortcut is still in El Cap and is enabled,
just does not seem to work.

Ben,

Have you actually found this to be reliable? Even when the window you
wish to drop the item on is visible on the screen, I've found it not to
work correctly this way.

I always wind up having to do it the old fassion way with
vo+command+shift+space, then move where I need to move, route the mouse,
then vo+command+shift+space again to drop.

It probably is your case actually. Make sure when you do your original scans
of your finger you do it with the case off. This tends to work better.

Other than that though, no I havenever had fingerprints stop working on me over

RE: Suggestions for anti-virus

2016-02-01 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi,

We’ve just stopped supporting an on site AV tool for work and have started
recommending people get the free online version of Sophos from the Sophos
website.

They have both windows and mac versions and it’s pretty good for an av tool.

On a mac I’m less likely to install one but I do recommend people stay safe and
use it if they have it.

I’d recommend Sophos over all others after I’ve been using it for 8 years.

Have you tried your pin code and then relock your phone and attempt with your

having trouble getting into edit mode on my phone

2016-02-01 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

I know I've brought this up before, but it's happening again. I can't get my
screen into the edit mode so I can delete apps. I've tried adjusting how hard
I press on the screen, but nothing seems to work, I always end up opening the
app. Does anyone have a trick to consistently make this work?
thanks,
Donna

Thanks Phil ,Jeff and Ray for the suggestions . I withheld the name of the
company because I do not want to trash them . It may only be a conflict that I
am having . Like I said I had no problem with them until the upgrade .. The
program that I was using was Kaspersky , I am sure others are using them with
no issues .

Thanks . Ben

Hello all,
I've probably asked this on every technological email list of which
I've been a part, but what is your favorite app for iOS and/or OSX for
acquiring information about the sport of cricket? I used to use an app
called iCricket, but last I used it, it had kind a gone down the
tubes. Now, I'll admit that this was over a year to a year and a half
ago, so the salt shaker is necessary. But, I'm looking for news,
fixtures/schedules, scores and all that cricketing jazz.

Sincerely,
Ben

Re: Suggestions for anti-virus

2016-02-01 Thread Scott Granados
So unlike the others, I wouldn’t bother with antivirus software with the
following caveats. That you use only approved sources for software, you use
good common sense computing and you have a decent router firewall and aren’t
plugging straight in to the network.

Expanding on this, the number of virus / worms and things for the Mac is still
relatively low. It’s growing for certain but the Mac has something that
windows never had and that’s a good operating system and a good secure kernel
to build on. Unix is just inherently more secure than Windows will ever be.
As such you can really lock down your machine more and things like user and
group permissions are actually usable and meaningful instead of window
dressing.:) So, I’m confident in saying if you use good common sense computing
practices you’ll be fine. If you travel and are on public WiFi a lot or you
need to install from non approved 3rd parties then by all means install
something.

If you feel you must, I’ve had good luck with ESET and of the ones mentioned,
the Sophos engine is better than the Kaspersky engine. The implementation I’ve
used is on the Juniper SRX firewalls and I’ve found the Sophos engine to be
much more efficient and less false positives. That being said nothing, no
program or package beats good quality common sense safe computing.

Thanks
