it’s choppy, even under Sierra, but it’s always been like that. However once
disk activity stops VoiceOver behaves as expected. Not concerned, more curious
really.

Re: Recommendations for noise canceling headphones

2016-09-29 Thread Kimberly
Phil,

The model I have is the quiet comfort 20 which is currently available from
Amazon for 249 dollars with free shipping for prime members. As I said, they
are pricey but worth it in my opinion.

I hope this is helpful.

I don’t think there is a way to type it differently, but maybe :) always stand

Re: Dash vs Minus

2016-09-29 Thread E.T.
That should work but that would be global wouldn't it? Normally pne
would not notice a difference in print but using Voiceover, when numbers
are involved, dash would not do. And when not using numbers, minus would
not be good.

So I am curious if there is an actual difference in typing the two
characters? Thanks much.

working fine yesterday but today it is so unbelievably choppy and cutting out
that it is unusable. Any clue what might be the cause of this? Thanks,

Sometimes, it'll let the song finnish, but more times than not, it'll just stop

I've not been able to really pinpoint down an exact pattern of occurance,
nor an exact amount of time down to the minute when this happens. It's a bit
random. I mean, it's around that 30 minute timeframe, but it could be a little
more or less, give or take. Both our devices have been rebooted, and we've
both checked our internet connectivity and all is fine.

I've also tried, being I'm the one with a phone, both on LTE as well as
over wifi, and both're having this issue. I've called Apple, and they're not
exactly sure what's going on. They're looking into it, but they're a little

also having the issue with ITunes 12.5.1 running on the nonbeta build of OSX
10.12 Sierra with a Mac mini Late 2012 running 8GB ram, I5 processor.

I'm just curious if any of yall're seeing this as well, and if so, when
exactly did it start doing this to you?

Thanks for any help/suggestions. By the way, yes, I have signed out and
back in both on my phone as well as on my mac from my Apple ID. It's not a
network issue on my end, I don't think, as my friend's having the same issue,
and he's more than half way across the country from me gbeographicly. Not even
on the same ISP. I'm not running a firewall nor any security stuff that would
be blocking incoming nor outgoing traffic, and prior to yesterday, this has not
been an issue prolonging.

Chris.

Re: Installing SSD on my mac mini, the os can not read it

2016-09-29 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

It seems like it may not be installed properly. Usually, in Disk Utility,
you'll still see devices that are not necessarily usable with the Mac. You
just won't have the options available to format or partition. It's possible
that the cable is not seated properly, thus not getting power or it being seen.
Try one other thing before going to the effort of taking it apart again. Try
resetting the PRAM. To do this, you need to press the cmd, Option, r and p
keys as the Mini's startup chime is sounding. So, to make this as easy as
possible, I usually place my left thumb across the left cmd and option keys
then use my left index finger and right pinky to hold down the r and p keys.
Practice it a few times before going for it. So, what you'd do is turn the
Mini off, wait about 10 to 20 seconds, then press the power button to turn it
on. Quickly hold down this key combination through the startup chime, and keep
it held down through two more chimes, then release the keys. Try to start it
up again with Simon's instructions and see if the SSD shows up in Disk Utility.

If you still have no luck, you'll need to see if the drive had its cable seated
well. If it still doesn't work, then it is possible, although not normal, that
this SSD is not visible to your model of Mac.

Hi unders, I was looking at the 35's as well. I'm thinking more towards the
25's which are not wireless and seem to have less problems at least from the
reviews. How long have you had the quiet comfort 35's, and have you experienced
any malfunctioning? I'm wondering if the wireless feature is worth the extra
$50?. I think I may go for the wired 25's but I'll know more when I actually go

I quite honestly think that some people don't read their emails before
responding. Nowhere in my email did I say that Apple was forcing me to
upgrade to Sierra. The point is that I can't do so even if I desperately
wanted to without buying a new machine. Indeed, I don't agree with something
being forced upon anyone. I feel the reference here is towards Microsoft and
Windows 10. Believe me I am no fan of such an approach.

However, here is an interesting point. I am running a 5-year-old desktop
custom built machine. It has 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. Despite the
speck remaining the same in every sense, including the CPU, Windows 10 is
much faster than Windows 7 ever was on this machine.

So, please feel free to lambast Microsoft. Times they deserve it, times they
don't. I do not feel protective towards any provider of either goods or
services. It is simply a financial transaction between them and myself.
Long gone is the day when providers cared anything about their customers,
and as far as I am concerned, the feeling is mutual.

Despite that however, I strongly feel that people should pay for the goods
and services they receive. This is equally true when the goods are licenced
software. There are those who feel it is fine to share such products with
friends and family members in breach of very clear guidelines to the
contrary, but the less said about that the better. Thank goodness none of my
friends subscribe to this list.

Another responder points out that my Mini is, and will probably continue to
function using El Capitan for a long time. I have no doubt of that and I
have said as much myself. Macs are built too last. It defeats the purpose
however if the hardware cannot be upgraded to match the needs of the
software, at least to some degree, without buying a new machine.

Here is something in my appalling ignorance that escapes me. I have a
friend who bought a Mini at the same time as myself. An off the shelf Mac
Mini in late 2009 had a speck of 1GB of RAM and a 128GB hard drive. He
decided to double the Ram to 2GB and stay with the same size hard drive. I,
on the other hand, decided on 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive. As you can
imagine the price difference was significant. Now, here is the point. He is
also running El Capitan with absolutely no performance difference to my own
machine. Like myself, he cannot upgrade to Sierra, but as we have both
light-heartedly laughed, he has only been half as well screwed as I myself
have.

So, do chill out friends. The sun still shines and the world continues to
revolve. An almost pathological adherence to any one supplier over another
cannot be a good thing. Apple produce a great product with great built-in
accessibility. The weakness in their model from a consumer's perspective is
that they provide both the hardware and the software. Although this has many
benefits, it is not an ideal situation in one crucial area. Namely, it is
not financially to their advantage to support hardware beyond a short time
frame. Microsoft will be just as bad in this respect now that they have also
got into the hardware game. Because of that, under no circumstances, will I
purchase any of their hardware. They will use the same old flannel to
encourage their customers to buy the latest offering so that their
well-heeled shareholders can buy a bigger and better yacht than their
equally well-heeled neighbours. I have a rule that I always follow when
assimilating any information coming from a source that has a financial
interest in that information. Don't believe everything they tell you.
Indeed, only believe a small fraction of what they tell you, and you can't
go wrong.
Kind Regards:
Martin

2016-09-29 Thread Ramy Moustafa
Hello Simon and TIm:
after doing what Simon told me, my mac opened with Mountain lion
installed on my 16 GB, it's so slow but I can get the disk utility.
the Surprise is that, the disk utility can not see the SSD HD at all,
don't know why, but it can not see it at all.
any ideas?
it can see only the Kingstone USB, any ideas?

However removing and replacing the drive is not an easy task I’ve never

knowing the correct procedure to remove things in the mini case.

 Hi,

If it was installed properly, you should only see a few items in the
"Select a Disk" table. Try formatting the first item in that list.
 Make
sure that you format it as MacOS Extended (Journaled). If that doesn't
appear to work, you may need to use the Partition tab instead. In the
Partition tab, choose that you wish to create one partition, MacOS
Extended (Journaled) and that should get rid of the NTFS stuff.

they're super pricey, and from what I hear not all that reliable. I'd like to
get the buds that you're talking about but there are so many models to choose
from. Could you please, please, look up the model number for those Bose earbuds

Wow, Martin, I saved your message to my Mac. There’s a good long article in
that contribution I know there is. You really could do it if you wanted to.

I too cannot upgrade to Sierra because this here mid 2009 Mac book pro just
will not take it.

I try to stream music of any sort in a batch, meaning, I try to
play multiple tracks back to back, my friend and I both are finding
that after say, oh... what, roughly maybe 20 to 25 ish minutes?
maybe half an hour at most? The stream will just totally die.
Sometimes, it'll let the song finnish, but more times than not,
it'll just stop dead cold.
I've not been able to really pinpoint down an exact pattern of
occurance, nor an exact amount of time down to the minute when this
happens. It's a bit random. I mean, it's around that 30 minute
timeframe, but it could be a little more or less, give or take.
Both our devices have been rebooted, and we've both checked our
internet connectivity and all is fine.
I've also tried, being I'm the one with a phone, both on LTE as
well as over wifi, and both're having this issue. I've called
Apple, and they're not exactly sure what's going on. They're
looking into it, but they're a little bit stumped at this time.
This is on the nonbeta build of iOS 10.02, and I'm also having the
issue with ITunes 12.5.1 running on the nonbeta build of OSX 10.12
Sierra with a Mac mini Late 2012 running 8GB ram, I5 processor.
I'm just curious if any of yall're seeing this as well, and if so,
when exactly did it start doing this to you?
Thanks for any help/suggestions. By the way, yes, I have signed out
and back in both on my phone as well as on my mac from my Apple
ID. It's not a network issue on my end, I don't think, as my
friend's having the same issue, and he's more than half way across
the country from me gbeographicly. Not even on the same ISP. I'm
not running a firewall nor any security stuff that would be
blocking incoming nor outgoing traffic, and prior to yesterday,
this has not been an issue prolonging.

Chris.

2016-09-29 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hello everyone.

So I’ve done it! Purchased my girlfriend and new list member Hannah's first mac
which will come with flash storage. Wondering what VoiceOver would be like at
startup compared to how it would be on a mac with hard disk storage? On mine,
it’s choppy, even under Sierra, but it’s always been like that. However once
disk activity stops VoiceOver behaves as expected. Not concerned, more curious
really.

Re: Recommendations for noise canceling headphones

2016-09-29 Thread Kimber Gardner
Bose makes some truly excellent noise-cancelling headphones. The ones
I have (sorry, I forget the model) are in-the-ear earbuds, but I'm
sure any model would give you similar quality. The earbuds have a
small switch on the wire that allows you to "open" the earbud to sound
if necessary. So if like me you were using the earbuds in
noise-cancelling mode while on a plane, you could press this switch
and hear any announcements. Then press again and re-engage the
noise-cancelling.

Bose are pricy, but for my money they are worth every penny.

Re: Recommendations for noise canceling headphones

2016-09-29 Thread Cameron Strife
Hi. I am a terrible sleeper. everything wakes me up, and I mean
everything. Anyways, I found headphones to be too uncomfortable to
sleep with, but, it's a personal preference thing and maybe you'd be
fine.

I use earplugs instead and they do a pretty good job. I also use a
white noise machine and that really does help a lot! Earplugs are a
few dollars for many pairs and a decent white noise machine is around
twenty dollars on amazon etc.

Maybe give those things a try too...

Cameron.

being forced upon anyone. I feel the reference here is towards Microsoft and
Windows 10. Believe me I am no fan of such an approach.

However, here is an interesting point. I am running a 5-year-old desktop

Long gone is the day when providers cared anything about their customers,

contrary, but the less said about that the better.

Hello!

You can easily get the url for a link pressing VO+shift+u, and VO will read it
out loud. After that, you can press VO+Shift+c to copy it and you can paste it
where ever you like.
If you are inside the web you want to share, you have various options: Either
use the “Share button from the tool bar, or just copy the address from the
address bar. You go to it by pressing CMD+l or CMD+option+f. At that moment,
the address is selected, so if you press CMD+c it will come to your clipboard.

I hope this helps.

It's not good to believe everything you hear

2016-09-29 Thread Martin Brown

I often hear the argument that Apple only use the very best components in

Apple Music being a little quirky?

2016-09-29 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Ever since yesterday afternoon, I, along with another friend of mine are having
a really bizarre issue.

Regardless its source, be it from the For You area, or from just searching, be
it a station created off a certain criteria, (Beats1 not being included,) be it
in my ICloud library etc. Point is, if I try to stream music of any sort in a
batch, meaning, I try to play multiple tracks back to back, my friend and I
both are finding that after say, oh... what, roughly maybe 20 to 25 ish
minutes? maybe half an hour at most? The stream will just totally die.
Sometimes, it'll let the song finnish, but more times than not, it'll just stop
dead cold.

I've not been able to really pinpoint down an exact pattern of occurance, nor
an exact amount of time down to the minute when this happens. It's a bit
random. I mean, it's around that 30 minute timeframe, but it could be a little
more or less, give or take. Both our devices have been rebooted, and we've
both checked our internet connectivity and all is fine.

I've also tried, being I'm the one with a phone, both on LTE as well as over
wifi, and both're having this issue. I've called Apple, and they're not
exactly sure what's going on. They're looking into it, but they're a little
bit stumped at this time. This is on the nonbeta build of iOS 10.02, and I'm
also having the issue with ITunes 12.5.1 running on the nonbeta build of OSX
10.12 Sierra with a Mac mini Late 2012 running 8GB ram, I5 processor.

I'm just curious if any of yall're seeing this as well, and if so, when exactly
did it start doing this to you?

Thanks for any help/suggestions. By the way, yes, I have signed out and back
in both on my phone as well as on my mac from my Apple ID. It's not a network
issue on my end, I don't think, as my friend's having the same issue, and he's
more than half way across the country from me gbeographicly. Not even on the
same ISP. I'm not running a firewall nor any security stuff that would be
blocking incoming nor outgoing traffic, and prior to yesterday, this has not
been an issue prolonging.

Chris.

Thanks so much for your reply,
inside the internet recovery, the disk utility, I can see only the
apple disk image, but Voice over told me that this is 2 or 3, but the

it even with no name, it says space, and I can not eraise, particion

RE: Installing SSD on my mac mini, the os can not read it

2016-09-29 Thread Simon Fogarty
HI Ramy,

If your asking if you can open the mac mini yourself then yes it should open
very easily

However removing and replacing the drive is not an easy task I’ve never myself
been able to do it successfully but that was partly due to not knowing the
correct procedure to remove things in the mini case.

RE: parallels access

2016-09-29 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Chris,

Yes it’s been around since I think version 6 of parallels,

It allows you to have a vm setup on your mac computer and then if your out and
about and need to access your vm on that mac computer, you can setup parallels
on your IOS device and then start the vm up running a windows session on your
IOS device.

Only problem is that getting a screan reader like jaws to work is a no go to an
absolute pig!

As I stated in an earlier message,
VM and citrix do a version also

My point was, you asked about Parallels, which is a mac based program which
runs on a mac. This is why I wrote and said it's not accessible, but to check
out Fusion. How was I to know ahead of time you didn't have a mac, and just
further for your info. No. Not everyone on here has a mac, let alone a
macbook, but that wasn't what you were asking.

You were asking about a piece of software which was designed to run on a mac.
You asked if it was accessible, I said no, then gave you an alternative. I'm
sorry if I did wrong by doing so.

I'm done trying to answer this particular thread, as I see it going absolutely
nowhere at this point that would be advantageous to the list.

RE: Installing SSD on my mac mini, the os can not read it

2016-09-29 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Ramy,

If you look at the first thing in the list of disks in disk utility it should
give you the name of the drive and it’s size,
Unless of course it has been changed by someone.

Hi,

If it was installed properly, you should only see a few items in the "Select a

format it as MacOS Extended (Journaled). If that doesn't appear to work, you
may need to use the Partition tab instead. In the Partition tab, choose that
you wish to create one partition, MacOS Extended (Journaled) and that should
get rid of the NTFS stuff.

RE: Installing SSD on my mac mini, the os can not read it

2016-09-29 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Ramy,

You will need to boot the machine up and then run the Disk utility to view the
drive,

If the ssd isn't formatted or is formatted in say ntfs etc then the mac wont
see what you want it to have.

So you will probably need to format it first and then try setting things up.

Hey guys. I got a reply back from Apple Accessibility. So they say that if
Voiceover crashes while using Alex, they want you to do something called a
SysDiagnose command by pressing Control+Option+Command+Shift+Period and send
them the logs as attachments. I'll do that when I feel like crashing my
computer which should be fun lol. *:P

RE: SV: parallels access

2016-09-29 Thread Simon Fogarty
Yes iPads are an apple product

If your asking if parallels can be used on an iPad etc then the answr is yes it
can!

The IOS app for Parallels works as a portal between the IOS device and a
computer that you have parallels setup and working on,

If you then have parallels running an OS such as windows then the parallels
app on your iPad can be told to pick up that VM and give it to you on the IOS
device.

VM do a similar product which was previously called horizon but I believe has
since changed.

Citrix also do a similar product using the citrix receiver and running windows
through wha tthey call a xenapp desktop

So yes they can work but good luck with using them if you’re a screan reader
user as the accessibility for parallels is non existant,

VM will work but authorisation of jaws or similar I haven't figured out yet,

And the same with the citrix xen system.

I tried it a couple of months back having been told it was accessible

I can confirm it’s accessibility is absolute crap.
Even the installation process needed sighted assistance to get things installed.
