Re: Apple discontinuing the iPod?

2016-10-02 Thread Blee Blat
If you are serious about music, there is no way is fits on these small devices.
That's why I just said "screw it" and paid for the streaming service. Sure, it
requires an internet connection, but you can get stuff offline if needed and if
my connection screws up I've got bigger problems than music not working.

Hello Chris,

I could not reproduce your bug.

This is to say, I went to the website, using Sierra, however, and located
the "Ask the community" edit field.

I typed in several questions, including the string that you provided, and a
results list was displayed.

I will tell you that in order to see the results list, I used the Headings
item in the VoiceOver Rotor. I selected the first answer in the table.
After that, I simply used VO+Right Arrow to scroll through the list of
replies to various questions. I found the site relatively straight-forward.

I performed the various searches using a MacBook Pro, mid-2014 with Sierra.

As I have a terrible head cold, I'm signing off for tonight. Please forgive
any typos in this post.

Good luck on your serch.

OK, the site is:

http://community.sony.com

I got my account registered, although I'm not sure how necessary that'll be
for you all to see my problem.

BTW, I'm doing this with El Capitan 10.11.6. I tried on my macbook running
Sierra, however, and the results were no better.

Once on this page, there is a search or ask the community text box.

In this field, I typed without the quotes, "Blind individual needs help with
minidisk MZ-N505 recorder."

I then hit VO+Right arrow and got over to the ask now button, and hit
VO+Space, as you'd suspect.

About two times out of at least 6 or 7, the page took a monumental dump on
me, and totally crashed Safari. One of the two times, it even totally
crashed Voiceover to the point I couldn't even turn it back on. I literally
had to restart the mac to regain both speech and braille output.

The few times that I did manage to get it not to crash, it looks like the
Voiceover focus is jumping haywire all over the blasted page, and won't stay
still. Even turning off cursor tracking with VO+Shift+F3 doesn't help. It
still jumps all over the place.

The one time I lucked out and it didn't jump, I saw search results, but they
were completely irrelavent. I thought perhaps I could just keep vo+right
arrowing, and eventually I'd get to an option like with most forums, where
it would say something to the effect of, don't see a rellavent result? Click
here to start a new topic.

Even when logged in, I click on new conversation, but then I get that stupid
search page again! No matter what the heck I do, I can't get past that
step.

I called Sony, and they are completely! unhelpful, what else is new. -
Doesn't surprise me in the least. Mister Habib barely spoke english. I'll
leave my comments to myself on that note, but, yeah...

I have a big recording project coming up, and was donated this unit. It's
not required, although it would be very very helpful if I could use it. All
I'm trying to do is figure out if someone in the forums could tell me how
many button presses in the menu I need to do to delete an individual track,
as well as what to do to delete an entire disk in one shebang. Provided
someone could tell me that, I'd be in good shape. I downloaded the pdf
manual, but it's not helping. It gives the steps, but as always, no menu
matrix.

So, if someone could help me get this question posted to the forums, I'd
really! appreciate it!

Chris.

Minidisk Recorders, USB, and macs

2016-10-02 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
So... I wanted to put this in a separet thread, as it didn't seem appropriate
putting it with my question about the website.

I have a Sony MZ-N505 Gold colored portable minidisk recorder unit that was
recently donated to me.

Obviously, the menus don't speak, and I can't really get someone sighted to
help me, as the problem is, the menus though don't wrap, don't seem to be very
consistent. For example: One minute after enterring the edit menu, I'll right
arrow twice to get to the erase option. Other times, I'll find that I have to
arrow 3 times, instead of 2. It's fvreaking stupid! There is no pattern that
I can see to things. The menus basically seem to change slightly at full
random. You'd think that wouldn't be possible. A menu's a menu, but
apparently not.

Anyway, to tie this back into the mac side, here's my question. The unit has a
mini USB port on it. I indeed do have a cable that fits. Looking on the Sony
website at:

https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=MZN505

Under drivers and software, you'll find that there are update patches to things
like Simple Burner, and OpenMG® Jukebox, etc, as well as Sonic Stage, but the
actual software itself isn't there. Only the walkman drivers, and the
patch/updates. I can't find the full fledged installers for the software. The
lady who donated this to me swears to God that it's not USB compatible, and
there is no CD rom that came with the unit. The website is saying differently,
and obviously, yes it is USB compatible, as I can plug it in with no problem,
and when I do, then go under system profiler report in About this Mac, I
definitely see it listed.

My question is, first of all, is there anywhere to get the OpenMG Jukebox
software? Apparently, it's not model specific. It supports several different
models, mine being one of them. Secondly, If not, then are there any free
software packages out there, or if not free, at least very affordible, that
will allow you to connect a minidisk recorder via USB, then transfer mp3's over
to the minidisk which is in the recorder, as well as let you delete tracks over
USB. Before anyone asks, no, this unit doesn't act as a removable media drive.
You absolutely cannot use it with the Finder. At least not natively. It's
not like a CD drive. And no, it doesn't show up as another burnable drive in
burning apps like Simplyburns, or what not. It's not quite that easy.

I just figure, if I can find a way to transfer via USB, then that may solve 90
percent of my problems. Apparently, that's exactly what the OpenMG Jukebox
software was supposed to do.

Chris.

I got my account registered, although I'm not sure how necessary that'll be for
you all to see my problem.

I then hit VO+Right arrow and got over to the ask now button, and hit VO+Space,
as you'd suspect.

About two times out of at least 6 or 7, the page took a monumental dump on me,
and totally crashed Safari. One of the two times, it even totally crashed
Voiceover to the point I couldn't even turn it back on. I literally had to
restart the mac to regain both speech and braille output.

I thought perhaps I could just keep vo+right
arrowing, and eventually I'd get to an option like with most forums, where it
would say something to the effect of, don't see a rellavent result? Click here
to start a new topic.

Even when logged in, I click on new conversation, but then I get that stupid
search page again! No matter what the heck I do, I can't get past that step.

I called Sony, and they are completely! unhelpful, what else is new. - Doesn't
surprise me in the least. Mister Habib barely spoke english. I'll leave my
comments to myself on that note, but, yeah...

I have a big recording project coming up, and was donated this unit. It's not
required, although it would be very very helpful if I could use it. All I'm
trying to do is figure out if someone in the forums could tell me how many
button presses in the menu I need to do to delete an individual track, as well
as what to do to delete an entire disk in one shebang. Provided someone could
tell me that, I'd be in good shape. I downloaded the pdf manual, but it's not
helping. It gives the steps, but as always, no menu matrix.

So, if someone could help me get this question posted to the forums, I'd
really! appreciate it!

Chris.

There is some way in the international or keyboard settings to input UNICODE minus

symbols (command-control-space on my system), you can search for minus.

There are actually UNICODE symbols for all of the recycle categories too! What

I have used the question mark in Google Mail and Google Groups. So at least in
some cases this will work for Google products too.

Best wishes,

At this point you can only store up to two gigs of music on an Apple Watch

What's in the box with Hannah's mac

2016-10-02 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hello everyone.

Some of you were asking what’s in the box with Hannah’s mac. Well, thanks to
more research, found out the software that’s in the box is OS X El Capitan, and
not say one or two updates behind with Sierra. It seems all macs, including the
Macbook Air which we are now sleeping on, come with OS X El Capitan.

Sorry, must have been an oversight on my part.

hyperlinks in PDF

2016-10-02 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running the latest El Capitan on my iMac. I have a pages document which
contains hyperlinks which work fine in pages with VoiceOver saying “Link”
before each hyperlink. Alas when I export this file to PDF Preview does not
seem to recognise the hyperlinks. From web research this conversion ought to
work OK.

Do hyperlinks work in PDF documents under Preview for anyone? If so can you
please point me to such a PDF document.

Many thanks….

Re: Apple discontinuing the iPod?

2016-10-02 Thread Donna Goodin
That's interesting. It would absolutely never occur to me to use my Apple
Watch as a music player. I mean, obviously it has the music app, but as I
understand it, all music would be played via connecting to the cloud, or
another device like an iPhone. Why bother with that when you could just store
your music directly on the player? I'm thinking about things like long car
trips here, where you might not have WIFI, and you could burn through a lot of
data if you used your data connection. I think I'll stick with my plan to keep
an old phone as an iPod. :)

Re: Dash vs Minus

2016-10-02 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Well, UNICODE 2122 is apparently the minus sign. Not only is there a minus sign
but a special one for making negative numbers as opposed to positive numbers.

There is some way in the international or keyboard settings to input UNICODE
minus as option held down while typing 2212. Also, if you go into edit->emotes
and symbols (command-control-space on my system), you can search for minus.

There are actually UNICODE symbols for all of the recycle categories too! What
fun we could have.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: Apple discontinuing the iPod?

2016-10-02 Thread David Griffith
You may be wise. Tthe discussions I have seen is that Apple want to
shift people away from using iPod to using an Apple Watch. I have no
definite knowledge as to whether this is true but there seems
speculation that iPod development has ceased in favour of this longer
term switch.

I went to the Apple Store in the UK and there is no mention of the iPod
apart from its presence in a list of products described as being in the
page "footer area".

The iPod is certainly not in the headlining products for the Store now
so it seems it has at least shifted in priorities for marketing.

Chris,

Had you paid attention, you would have noticed that my subject line contained a
question mark. One reason I brought the issue to the attention of the list is
because I figured someone here would have better information than the guy from
BestBuy. Last I heard, asking questions was allowed on this list. So hold
your criticism.

Guys, it can’t be true, I looked at iDownloadblog and there is no articles

guy from Best Buy has said this and that, but anybody from anywhere can make
things up like that. Again, not blaming anyone here, just offering some
constructive criticism to the list overall.

2016-10-02 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

That's good news. I'm glad that the problem is solved. When in the AppStore,
you can activate the Purchased tab, cmd-4, in the table of purchased items,
there is a download progress column for each item that is being downloaded.

just 1 question.
am now downloading the el capitan, but I can not find the progress to
know the percentage, is there a way to know it when am inside the mac
app store?

Thanks in advance

correction re: google docs:

2016-10-02 Thread Michael Babcock
the keystroke to bring keystrokes up is command+/
In other web based apps, that i use daily, e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Trello,
Slack, etc the keystroke to show keystrokes is a question mark, however google
products is a command+/ on the mac.
That’s what i get for assuming!
sorry for the confusion all, and next time i’ll consume coffee before i reply
to list messages :)
best.

i’m sorry, you need to move focus out of the editing of the document with
“VO+Left or VO+Right” then use the question mark to open the keystrokes. or,
reference this article for the keystrokes:

Hi,
So if I am editing in a doc for example, wouldn't a question mark put in
a question mark?
On my Chrome book and Windows machines it is control-slash, but it says
it is different on the mac.

My 2009 mac mini is too slow to do anything with.

I did a search and found that the only discontinued ipods so far seem to be the
iPod Classic and Mini ones. All the newer ones should still be supported.

Re: Apple discontinuing the iPod?

2016-10-02 Thread Donna Goodin
Well, that certainly suggests that BestBuy isn't the only one getting rid of
their iPod stock. And I agree about buying an out-dated device, I bought my
5th gen the summer before the 6th Gen came out. Not making that mistake again.
:)
Cheers,
Donna

 Chris,

Had you paid attention, you would have noticed that my subject line
contained a question mark. One reason I brought the issue to the
attention of the list is because I figured someone here would have better
information than the guy from BestBuy. Last I heard, asking questions was
allowed on this list. So hold your criticism.

I have an iPod 5th gen and was thinking of buying an iPod 6th gen. I had been
looking at Amazon but hadn’t;t bought anything yet. After reading this thread,
I looked at Amazon and the only units they had were from marketplace orders.
They did not seem to have any in stock to sell directly like they did a few
weeks ago. I don’t know what this means, but I’m not buying another iPod right
now. I refuse to buy something that is going to be out of date in a year or

Yeah, but you're assuming he doesn't know what he's talking about. That is
certainly a possibility, I'd be about the last one to put my faith in what I

But remember, that doesn't mean it's not being discontinued. I'm sure, even if
it is discontinued, that Apple will sell whatever stock they have left.

Re: Apple discontinuing the iPod?

2016-10-02 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Helga,

Actually, I don't think it really matters where you buy it from. I could also
order it from BestBuy.com, that is an option as long as they still have them in
stock, anyway.

However, as Simon pointed out, the iPod hasn't been updated since the iPhone 6
came out, which is two years ago now. My plan is to upgrade to the iPhone
7+--or whatever they end up calling it--and then keep my current phone as my
iPod. I'll get a much better device that way.
Cheers,
Donna

Thanks, Mark, no worries. I know the possibility of this comes as a shock to
everyone - it certainly did to me. I was talking with my brother-in-law later
yesterday, and he said he had also heard that the iPod was being discontinued.
Again, I'm not taking his comment as definitive information, just asking the
question.

I thought the same thing, Simon. those are completely different devices that
sell at a much lower price point. It would seem like Apple would keep them

Yeah, I know. Until today, I just relied on the preview pain and focus
remained there. Now though, I’m changing tactics. I’ve removed the preview
pain, interact with the messages table, navigate the subject column, and if
a subject interests me I can just open the message with return. If not, I
delete the message with delete. It’s beautiful! Better than what I used to
do. I guess, as per say, old habits die hard, especially coming from Windows

Yeah, I know. Until today, I just relied on the preview pain and focus remained
there. Now though, I’m changing tactics. I’ve removed the preview pain,
interact with the messages table, navigate the subject column, and if a subject
interests me I can just open the message with return. If not, I delete the
message with delete. It’s beautiful! Better than what I used to do. I guess, as
per say, old habits die hard, especially coming from Windows and Thunderbird.

I shall add, that Apple “did” quietly discontinue the iPod Classic, so it is
certainly possible that future iPods will be discontinued. But as of today,
Apple are still stocking all but the original iPod Classic.
