Re: 2016 Macbook Pro

2016-11-04 Thread David Chittenden
One of my favourite arguments from blind people about using the keyboard is:
many sighted people use the keyboard. It is faster than mouse / touchpad /
touchscreen. This argument is actually a fallasy.

First, the sighted people I know use the keyboard and shortcut keys, rather
than the mouse. This argument is predicated on the belief, and sometimes fact,
that I as a blind person have impressed my sighted colleagues, and they now do
the shortcut keys like I do. When true, less than 0.5% of the population does
not contact, at the level of significant influence, that many other people. I
have had this experience myself, where I convinced some sighted computer techs
to use shortcut keys rather than clicking menubar, then option. When I checked
a few months later, with these people, most of them were back to menubar click
then option click. In other words, the person did not continue with the
shortcut keys. Why? Because, clicking does not require remembering keystrokes.
And, people who use shortcut keys for specific apps at high production levels,
tend to use menubars and clicks in other aspects of computer use. Again, this
is because, outside high productivity, clicking on visual aspects is easier for
those who can do so.

Next, touchscreen and touchbar visual access. This has been scientifically
studied for many years. The fact is, error rates of end-users decrease
dramatically when well-set-up touch interfaces are introduced. I researched
this in 2012. At that time, standard error rates which required tech support
assistance was around 15% with systems which were keyboard and button placed.
However, for systems which switched to touchscreen-based, error rates and
support assistance dropped to 3% to 5%. It must be noted that this was the same
across every industry research study I read. In fact, I, and my research
librarian, specifically searched for any study that showed the reverse.

In other words, as I regularly state, I choose to stay where general market
tech is headed, as much as I am able. This way, I hopefully will be less stuck
when the incrimental changes lead to very different technology interfaces. Air
gestures will be significantly more difficult for the blind than touchscreen,
and I still suspect air gestures is where we are headed.

Kind regards,

2016-11-04 Thread Tree Mabry

I ordered the 13 inch, non touch bar model, with the 2.0 processor, 256
gigs of storage, and 16 gigs of ram. A few days ago I wrote an extensive
post on Apple Vis, about what went into this decision; I have copied and
pasted some of that post below; I’m sorry that it’s a bit long. You can
read the full post at this link.

http://www.applevis.com/forum/hardware-accessories/why-i-just-ordered-2016-mac-book-pro-function-keys

I think that the people who have expressed a desire to stay on top of the
latest trends in user interface might be especially interested in my
paragraph about Apple’s official touch bar user interface guidelines.

First let me say that I was pretty open to the idea of the touch bar last
week as I watched the Apple event. I felt pretty confident that Apple would
make sure that this new interface worked with voice over. In the days after
the event I hungrily tried to find any information about how exactly Voice
Over accessibility would work with the touch bar. Ironically when I did
come across some specifics they both encouraged me, and at the same time
helped me decide that I have no interest in the touch bar. The best info I
have found so far about Voice Over and the touch bar comes from I
accessibility, here is a link to the relevant article.

http://iaccessibility.net/index.php/2016/10/28/voiceover-at-the-bar/

The main takeaways are, you can use the number keys as function keys, there
are keystrokes for raising and lowering volume, and to interact with
sliders on the touch bar you have to double tap and hold, wait for a tone,
and then slide your finger. I think the volume keystrokes, and the number
keys acting as function keys makes a lot of sense, and I'm really glad
Apple is doing things that way. However, as soon as I realized how relieved
I was about these changes, I realized the relief was based around me being
able to avoid using the touch bar.

Basically I do not believe that the touch bar is going to make many things
more efficient or easier for voice over users. Take the sliders I
previously mentioned. I would much rather turn down brightness by simply
holding down a key, instead of the three step process voice over users will
have to navigate.

To some up my thoughts about touch bar and accessibility, I believe the
experience will be fine, but I do not think it will be better then what we
already have.

I know this post is getting very very long, but I want to now get into the
primary reasons I have decided to pass on the touch bar, and they have
little to do with voice over Accessibility.

1. I do not believe the touch bar will offer anything to power users who
know there keystrokes.

If you are an IOS user who wants to get into the mac, the touch bar might
be a good way for you to uncover features you didn't know about. But as a
long time mac user who knows the keystrokes by heart, it doesn't seem like
the touch bar is going to do much that keystrokes can't already do. One of
the best list of touch bar features I know about comes from I more.

http://www.imore.com/mac-touch-bar

I have gone through this list, and almost everything in it is either doable
with keystrokes, or does not interest me. Here are a few examples of touch
bar features and the corresponding keystrokes.

Activate Siri, hold down command space, activate dictation, hit function
key twice, new folder in the finder, shift command enter, Reply to email,
command r, compose new email, command N, send email, command shift d, new
tab in Safari command t, Etc. Etc. Etc. you get the picture.

Now if you read the entire I more list, you might accuse me of
cherrypicking features to make my point. It's true that I'm leaving out a
lot of features, but that is because it would be tedious for me to list
them here, and rotating photos or using final cut do not matter to me. Just
to be fair, the one and only feature of the touch bar, that we do currently
know about, and does interest me is predictive typing. I have long believed
that the native mac spell checker is a joke, and I struggle with spelling,
so predictive typing on the mac could be great for me. However, that one
feature is not enough for me to want the touch bar, and there is nothing
inherent about predictive typing that necessitates a touch bar; it could
easily be accomplished through keystrokes.

It’s not an accident that many of the touch bar features can be accessed
through key strokes; Apple’s’ official user interface guidelines for the
touch bar state, "Don’t expose functionality solely in the Touch Bar. Not
all devices have a Touch Bar, and people can disable app controls in the
Touch Bar if they choose. Always provide ways to perform tasks using the
keyboard or trackpad.” I know that some people feel the need to have the
touch bar so that they do not miss out and are able to stay ahead of the
technology curve, but I think these guidelines make it pretty clear that
the touch bar is not going

Hi Sharon

Michelle Stevens here,

Yeh I did not know you have a choclear implant. The only way I can use
voice over with mine is to use headphones. Am a bit careful upgrading to 7
because not sure how bluetooth will go it is so easy plugging in headphones
knowing it will work.

Nice to have another ci user on list.

Re: Radium

2016-11-04 Thread gs
The only reason I continue to use Radium is that it syncs through iCloud and is
usable on both the Mac and iPhone. I may be moving back to a PC due to
dissatisfaction with the new Macbook hardware. If I do that I will likely
abandon Radium since I'm really depending more and more on Tunein Premium.
Also, Radium isn't as accessible as I would like on the iPhone or the Mac. It
is difficult to re-order stations on the iPhone and all stations in one list
doesn't excite me either. I have enjoyed Radium but was hoping that further
development would result in added features and enhanced accessibility on both
the Mac and iOS. If that is not going to happen, I probably will just move
toward Tunein since it is possible to use a Web interface that will work on
most any OS.

maintaining their database. They did not specify that it was only the iPhone
app that was not being developed. My question was about that app, but they said
nothing at all about the Mac app, no distinction was drawn between the iPhone
app being developed or not and the Mac app being developed or not. Therefore, I
think it means radium development is not happening on any front. Too bad, as it
was a great app but will undoubtedly come up not working at all sooner or later.

Re: iTunes match questions

Good choice. Cause iTunes match is a annual fee, so once a year. And if you
cancel, your music stays on your system. I love it though, car play works with
it flawlessly.

2016-11-04 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

For normal use, the 8 GB should be fine. The only time you need 16 GB is if
you're doing lots of graphics rendering or virtual machine stuff like Scot
does. I think that you'll be fine with 8.

Hi all! How are you all? I'm interesting in getting the new MacBook Pro 13
inches next year, but the problem for me is that it does not have USV drive.
In other words, I can't use a UsV drive, and I use USV drives for school. Now I
have a MacBook Air 11 inches, which I bought last year. I have a question, do
you thinkI can sell my Mac to apple and buy the new one? Just wondering. And my
other question is, how I will use myUSV drive for school on the new Macbook
Pro? I do use my Trackpad on my macbook air, but not so much. That is why I
think I'm not ready to use the new Macbook Pro without USV drive and with
touch bar. I will really appreciate any opinion about this matter. I wil use
JAWS on my new Macbook Pro with vm ware fusion. I look forward in hearing form

I will probably go with a 2016 model because I usually update every year. I am

I’m not sure if I will go 1 or 2 TB of storage, 2 TB is a huge amount. I have
a 1 TB drive now and don’t come anywhere near filling it up. I do wish there
was a 32 GB option but we’ve covered that, 16 seems to be all the memoryI can
get at least for this year. I will also buy the upgraded graphics option for
faster graphics performance and because I experiment a lot with drones and

I totally agree with David’s position on technology and am glad apple puts a

Those of you who vote, do you get templates on your ballot paper in a braille
format? Of course you can only have one of those if you go to a local polling
station. How do blind people vote in America if they have no useful vision?
May be you can reply to me off list so as not to jamb people's inboxes as it's
nothing to do with Macs etc. This is for my knowledge.

Thanks for any replies.

We don’t get election day as a holiday, things are pretty much open. Sometimes
they close the schools because they may use schools as polling places but
that’s not a universal thing.

Re: iTunes match questions

2016-11-04 Thread aliFaisal
It is disconcerting to lose all the music that was compiled if one
happens to cancel their apple music subscription. Given this fact, it might be
more advantageous to just keep iTunes match, and purchase individual songs or
albums as one sees fit. I would hate to lose too much music in case of
unforeseen financial circumstances.
I think I might cancel apple music and just get iTunes match.

Tim is exactly right. Both services are not necessary unless you are going to
play some some that you don’t want to have a copy of. I like iTunes match,
cause it shows up on all my devices, including my appleTV. They allow you to

Re: iTunes match questions

2016-11-04 Thread aliFaisal
The reason for me to initially have iTunes match is for me to get higher
qualities of music I had added to my library. And the other major problem is
with apple music songs, I am restricted to only having them available on apple
products and in iTunes on windows. I want to be able to not only have those
songs everywhere, but to be able to play them in other programs, say winamp on
windows. I much rather prefer to use winamp to play my music than iTunes.

I think my last post on this wasn’t clear. When I used finder with Yosemite
“all my files” was one of the options in the sidebar. Since I upgraded to El
Capitan I no longer see this option. How do I search to get my files listed?

Re: Numbers: Cell selected

2016-11-04 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I believe that it has to do with the VO keys. If, for some reason, your finger
is a little lighter on the option key, then your Mac is doing what it is
supposed to. That is, ctrl-up goes to the top of the spreadsheet. Similarly
for ctrl-down to go directly to the bottom. I've found, on occasion, that the
option key does not stay depressed as easily on my keyboard as the ctrl. key.
I'm not sure if it's a worn out issue, or something else. Try using just arrow
keys instead and see if the problem persists. I've usually just turned VO off
then back on to make things work properly for me for #1. Haven't figured out
the exact problem, but, for me, it seems to have something to do with when I
select cells. This isn't unique to Sierra, as I've had it occur in El Capitan
as well.

Not sure if this is any help.

Re: iTunes match questions

2016-11-04 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Apple Music and iTunes Match are different, complementary, but also similar.

Apple Music does pretty well everything iTunes Match does, but a little
differently and with a few restrictions.

• both Apple Music and iTunes Match store your entire iTunes Library in iCloud.
That is, they both take personal music and playlists, put them into the Cloud
and make them accessible to all your devices.
• iTunes Match gives you a DRM free copy of your personal music if it is
available, whereas Apple Music downloads a copy with DRM present.
• if you terminate iTunes Match, the high quality copies of the music are still
available to you if you downloaded them, but with Apple Music, if you terminate
the subscription, you lose access to the higher quality Apple Music version.
• iTunes Match only gives you access to your own music and your purchased
music. Apple Music gives you access to the entire 43 million songs in Apple's
iTunes library.
• when downloading local copies to your devices, both iTunes Match and Apple
Music will give you the Apple version if available, but note the DRM
restrictions above.
• both also have restrictions on the quality and length of the original for
upload to the Cloud.
• there's some other technical differences that I can't remember.

So, in most cases, having both services is unnecessary, although there are
situations where it is useful.

HTH.

Re: iTunes match questions

2016-11-04 Thread Daniel Miller
Hi. You do not need to be invested in the separate iTunes match service
anymore. They incorporate the matching functionality into Apple Music. So if
you upload all of your songs to iCloud music library that weren't iTunes, they
will remain on all your devices. As far as duplicates, what I usually do is
delete the copies of songs and then re-download them.

I understand that the service matches your library with what it has in the
store and provides you to download the matched song. I also have a lot of songs
I have added with apple music. How does it go about apple music songs and
playlist? Does it match those as well?
I have a large library with songs in the thousands. What would be the easiest
and the most convenient way of determining whether the service has found
matches for a song that I am listening to. would this information be reflected
in the contextual menu on the song?
And finally, when one downloads the matched song, what then happens to the
original file that was in your library? does it get replaced or will it create
duplicates.
If it doesn’t replace them outright, is there a way to set iTunes to do that? I
am pretty busy on most days and do not have the time to sift through and find
duplicates that iTunes match has created with the matched songs. I want to
automate the process as much as I can.
Thanking you in advance for your feedback.

Re: Question Concerning Scheduling Time Machine

2016-11-04 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

The GUI for Time Machine is not that granular. It is automatically set to
backup every hour unless it can't find the backup drive. In those cases, it
will just try in another hour, and so on, until the drive is available. There
are methods in Terminal to change the backup schedule, but it's really not that
necessary in my opinion.

Re: 2016 Macbook Pro

2016-11-04 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

There will still be drives, just the interface for accessing the drive is
changing for the moment. I doubt USB will die immediately, it's just an
evolving sort of thing. Consider that people probably wondered similar things
with the demise of the floppy disk. Things change and new products and methods
of accessing and transferring data arise.

Re: braille translation for the mac

2016-11-04 Thread 'Peggy' via MacVisionaries
Hi Becky, there is a free program called louis that should work with El
Capitan. Braille Blaster is also free, but when I went to the site to try to
download it a couple of weeks ago, the only way I could do it was if I was
willing to be a beta tester. Duxbury Systems also has software for the Mac.
They have a beta version, but it costs about $600.00. However, you can download
a demo version for free. Hope this helps.

Hi all,

I will be starting an online class that requires that I do braille translation
in both Nimbus code and you EB math on my Mac. Does anyone know of a braille
translation software that is VoiceOver compatible and works well on the Mac? As
of right now until I know Sierra is completely stable I'm still running El
Capitan. Thank you for your help.

RE: Macbook Pro 2010 Hardware Upgrade questions

2016-11-04 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi

When it comes to SSD I prefer to go to the Samsung ssd drives
They tend to show more reliability performance.

I’ll use crucial ram as that is what apple use in their machines or at least it
was.

A big +1 to Crucial. I use their SSD drives and memory as well. You can
browse to their site and use the system configurator to match the right
hardware to the drives you want to upgrade. They also show you what tools
you’ll need and provide them at a very reasonable cost.

Big fan of Crucial and Mikron.

hi,

Most SSD's should work. I like the Crucial ones myself, but there's lots out
there that will do the job. You'll need to take into account the size of your
current HD and decide if you want the same size, smaller or bigger. It all
depends on your usage. It will likely be a matter of cost for you, but the 512
GB ones would likely do the job. On my machine, I took out the optical drive,
installed my 7200 RPM 750 GB drive into that location and installed the SSD
into where the HD normally resides. With this configuration, I only needed to
purchase a 256 GB SSD as I created a Fusion array between the old HD and new
SSD, giving me a 1 TB Fusion Drive Lots of storage and very quick.

I’m going to have to buy the SSD and battery on my own. How do I pick which SSD
to purchase? If I can get more years out of this Mac then I’ll be happy. When
finances change, then I’ll upgrade.

Hi,

The SSD will actually make a huge difference. Since you already have 8 GB RAM,
that's a good thing as well. I've put SSD's into quite a number of 2012 MBP's
lately and the users have noticed huge improvements. With respect to
installing Sierra on that machine, it's kind of your call. It will add some
features, but some new features require newer hardware. It certainly shouldn't
hurt your machine or slow it down that much with the installation of the SSD
and with 8 GB of RAM on board.

Hi guys:
I found an authorized service center that will replace my MBP battery, but I
have to order it from the Internet. I’m also thinking about letting them
replace my 7200 rpm 500 HD with an SSD. My question is is it worth the hard
drive upgrade? Will my MBP work faster? It has 8GB RAM right now with cor i7
processor. Also, is it worth having him install the latest Os, Sierra on a
machine this old? I don’t want to sync a lot of money in to this machine, but I
really cannot afoard to buy a new one.
Battery will cost $99 $25 to put it in. He said it would cost $150 alltogetehr
to put in SD. OF course, this doesn’t cost the price of the SSD.

Hi all! How are you all? I'm interesting in getting the new MacBook Pro 13

Totally agree here. I’ve done similar upgrades myself and experienced a
massive improvement in performance. My understanding is you could be talking
80X or 80 times faster on the disk access which is a huge improvement.

2016-11-04 Thread Simon Fogarty
Cellular data is not the phone connection,

Think of the cellular network as a number of layers in a shelving rack.

If you turn off the mobile data layer it doesn’t turn off the phone layer.

Seems to me you might try it this way.

If you have cellular service turned off for any apps, those apps
WILL, NOT, be able to use data if you go outside of Wifi range. IF you turn
cellular off all together, and have only Wifi calling inabled, you WILL, NOT,
be able to make or receive calls unless you are in range of your WIFI network.
Can’t see what’s so hard to understand about that myself. Seems very basic to
me.

Guys,

I don't know how to better explain this, and honestly, I'm getting a bit
agrevated trying to do so. Maybe one of you can chime in and help me out.

I have a friend who is on this list. I'm not going to reveal which member it
is, as I don't wish to put anyone here on the spot. I'm not even going to
reveal their gender.

Anyway, he/she has just recently obtained an iPhone. They are incredibly new to
the iPhone world. In fact, they are new to the smart phone world in general.

When they go into settings, Cellular, they see things using data like Apple
Music, YOutube, etc. I tried to explain to them that yes, those things are
turned on, as they are set to where cellular data is allowed to be used with
the apps.

I told them that if they either turn off any of those apps, or for that mind,
do what they wanna do by totally turning cellular off completely, that's not a
very wise idea in most cases. I tried explaining that when cellular is off,
then nothing will work if they're on the Verizon cellular 4G/LTE network. The
only time they'd have data internet connectivity would be if they were on a
wifi network. Obviously, they don't believe me, or don't understand, one of the
two.

I don't know how to explain this any easier. I told them that all they're doing
by disabling those apps under there like Apple Music, etc. is, they're not
disabling the apps from currently! using data. All they're doing is disabling
the apps so they never! will use cellular.

The example I gave them was, if they turn off Apple Music, then any time they
move out of range of their wifi, they won't be able to use Apple Music, as
they've disabled it from being able to be used with Cellular.

I told them, if they turn off cellular entirely, then they won't be able to
receive phone calls nor make calls, etc. unless they are on a wifi network, as
they do have wifi calling enabled.

Of corse, if they're on wifi, then their internet would also work regardless,
but as soon as they move away from the wifi range, their internet would go
kaput and so would their incoming and outgoing calls.

I tried explaining that by it saying those apps use cellular data, that doesn't
mean they're necessarily using their 6 gigs of data right then and there. The
only time that happens is if they're not on a wifi network, at which point, it
falls back to their LTE cellular data. As long as they are on a wifi network,
it would not use their 6GB data plan.

Again, I'm not gonna reveal who it is, but they are on this list, and they
definitely do check their mail from this list on a regular basis, so if you
respond, I know they'll see it, beyond a doubt.

Perhaps one of you all who're a little more patient today can explain this.

They told me that they called Verizon, and Verizon is telling them to always
leave cellular completely turned off regardless if they are on wifi or not. I
find that extremely perplexing, as why the hell would you want your cellular to
always be off. O, Kayyy. I know places where yes, you may want it off, but not
100% of the time. Come on! Really?

I don't doubt what they're telling me Verizon said to them, and honestly, it
doesn't exactly surprise me that a rep would a told them this, but I will
leavbe my personal opinions out, and spare you all.

Anyway, how else do I explain how that cellualr screen works, and what it does?

Also, they're wonderring in that screen at the veryh bottom what wifi assist is.

I wish they'd leave that stuff back their alone, as I know what's probably
gonna
