Since it is running Yosemite, I would get it. Yosemite was released last year,
so VoiceOver should work fine.

RE: Possibly getting an older Mac

2016-12-05 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Terri,

 Firstly welcome to the list,
To anser one of your later questions, to get learning knowledge for using a
mac,
This is probably one of the better places to get information regarding learnin
how to use a mac.

Some great and very knowledgable people here.

As for the mac, depending on how old it is yeah why not.

If you had a model number then we could possibly tell you more but Yosemite is
a nice version of the OS and would be ok to learn on,
Most of what can be done on the newer 2 operating system versions after
Yosemite can be done on that version as things pretty much stay the same.

Batteries can be replaced in the majority of cases and shouldn't be hard to
replace.

If the machine is being given to you then it's not a bad deal in my book and
would be a good learning point until yoru in a situation to purchase a newer
device.

iPads and iPhones are similar in themselves but the mac os is different
however with VO setup correctly you can use the mouse or track pad like an
iPhone or iPad screan and they all work great toghether.

Hope that helps if you can get the model or year / period for when the device
was released we could advise you on more.

Cheers,

Simon F

Hello everyone,

I joined this list to get some information I am not sure where to get anywhere
else.

A great friend of mine has a Mac laptop. I'm not sure which one, as she didn't
say. I am assuming there are different ones?

She hardly uses it, and has cleaned her stuff off of it. She wants to give it
to me as a gift, because she just really never used it.
She says that it can't be upgraded, and that the battery is bad.
But this part really doesn't concern me all that much. My windows 7 laptop has
a useless battery.

But here is where I am concerned.
Even though she is giving it to me as a gift, should I consider accepting it?

What happens if I can't upgrade it?
It's running Yosemite.

I have wanted a mac for years! But due to how much they unfortunately cost, my
chances of actually ever having one, is rare.

But if I get this Mac from my friend, what could I do with it?
If it can't be upgraded, won't most Apps no longer work?
Also, what sorts of things can I do with the mac?
What kinds of programs can I put on to it?

And last but not least, if I've never used one before, how do I even begin to
learn how to do this?

I have an Iphone 5S, and an Ipad mini4th Generation.
But I would imagine that the mac works way differently from those. And I know
without a doubt it's way different from my laptop running windows.

If anyone could give me any thoughts, or suggestions, I would more than
appreciate it.
Also, any sites that might be helpful to know about, will also be appreciated.
I go to get the mac, if I want it, this Saturday.

Thank you,

Terri

RE: How do I type a file path?

2016-12-05 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Robert,

Just note that with the file name on the end including the mp3 your not trying
to get into a file share but actually play an MP3.
So is this file on your machine your sending this email from or on another
machine?

The users/Robert/ is your user account and username on the machine,

Try in finder going to the “GO” menu and then down to “GO” open this and type
in the /box/music/ and it should take you to your music folder then hunt out
your file of choice.

I copied and pasted the line you corrected for me into the open folder or file
dialog, but it opens a finder window of the desktop folder.
users/robert/Box\ Sync/Music/Christmas/'Johnny Gill - Give Love On Christmas

Even if I pasted the following, It still open the Desktop folder.

Hi,

It depends on what app you're doing this in. In terminal, you would do the
following:

users/robert/Box\ Sync/Music/Christmas/'Johnny Gill - Give Love On Christmas

Notice that I did two different things within your filename where there was a
space or spaces. You can put a back-slash in just before the space so that
Terminal will ignore that space character, or further in the filename, I put
quotes around the title. Both single or double quotes will work.

When in AppleScript, you use colons where Terminal would use the slash, and the
quotes are not necessary.

Hi Simon and Hannah
Don't get me wrong.
I have been, and can still use, the extension, but due to my home set up, it is
potentially dangerous. For example, it could wrap around the chair or even
someone's leg. So a new charger would be worth it for me to eliminate that
potential.

RE: How do I type a file path?

2016-12-05 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Rob,

It really can depend on the file share,

Is it a windows or mac based file share?

On the mac back slash becomes a forward slash following on from the unix based
system.

If it's a windows based share is it using samba SMB or possibly CIFS

Also you could use an email address type log in or username if things are
setup that way,

There are a number of variables here

This path you have given,
Users/Robert/Box Sync/Music/Christmas/Johnny Gill - Give Love On Christmas
Day.mp3

I've changed the slashs to forward slash rather than back slashs.

You also have spaces, I could be wrong but in windows you need " quote marks"
around a drive name or file name with spaces in it,
Can't remember if this is the same for windows.
And this path is a music track on your machine in sub folders under your music
folder.

Sorry I can't be more specific but with out the full information it's hard to
advise.

Re: Possibly getting an older Mac

2016-12-05 Thread David Chittenden
Since it is running Yosemite, I would get it. Yosemite was released last year,
so VoiceOver should work fine.

Hi Robert,

Good work. Sorry, forgot to mention that part. The slash in front denotes
that you're starting at the root of the mounted volume, whereas neglecting the

Folder behavior

2016-12-05 Thread Joseph Norton
Hi list:

I am just now getting back into working with Mac OS, and, I’ve come across
something which I can’t remember how to deal with.

I must have done something to my Downloads folder, because, when I press
Command-O from the Home folder to get to Downloads, it doesn’t seem to actually
open the folder. I bet I pressed some function key by accident, but, I’m not
sure what it is. Normally, when I press Command-O, it opens up the folder
normally, but, now, it doesn’t seem to open it at all. Other folders seem to
behave ok.

Any suggestions as to how to fix this behavior?

Thanks!

Re: Braille and VMWare Fusion?

2016-12-05 Thread Scott Granados
Hi there, yes to both. First, start fusion and windows, next, attach your
braille display and a popup will appear on the vm fusion application itself.
It will ask if you wish to connect the device to your Mac or virtual machine
and there is a check box to remember your choice so you don’t have to do it
each time, pick virtual machine and set the checkbox as you desire. You’ll
then hear the windows sound for attaching a braille device.

Second, you can use the USB cable on the focus 40 and do the very same
procedure I listed above, or, go to the settings for the VM, activate the
bluetooth option so the bluetooth adapter is passed through to windows and use
the normal braille pairing option from there.

Hope that helps.

You can probably just buy that little slide in part for the charger. Or just
buy a charger. You can get them on amazon for 40 or 50 bucks, quite a bit less
than apple’s list price.

Re: Possibly getting an older Mac

2016-12-05 Thread Scott Granados
A lot of this depends on what kind of a Mac it is and how it’s configured.
What you should have your friend do is go to the apple menu, about this Mac,
and give you the information contained there as in what kind of Mac it is, what
kind of processor, how much memory and from there we can answer these questions
more intelligently. That’s how I would start. If you can post that
information I’d be happy to answer the rest of your questions from there.

Thanks
Scott

Possibly getting an older Mac

2016-12-05 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

I joined this list to get some information I am not sure where to get
anywhere else.

A great friend of mine has a Mac laptop. I'm not sure which one, as she
didn't say. I am assuming there are different ones?

She hardly uses it, and has cleaned her stuff off of it. She wants to
give it to me as a gift, because she just really never used it.
She says that it can't be upgraded, and that the battery is bad.
But this part really doesn't concern me all that much. My windows 7
laptop has a useless battery.

But here is where I am concerned.
Even though she is giving it to me as a gift, should I consider
accepting it?

What happens if I can't upgrade it?
It's running Yosemite.

I have wanted a mac for years! But due to how much they unfortunately
cost, my chances of actually ever having one, is rare.

But if I get this Mac from my friend, what could I do with it?
If it can't be upgraded, won't most Apps no longer work?
Also, what sorts of things can I do with the mac?
What kinds of programs can I put on to it?

And last but not least, if I've never used one before, how do I even
begin to learn how to do this?

I have an Iphone 5S, and an Ipad mini4th Generation.
But I would imagine that the mac works way differently from those. And I
know without a doubt it's way different from my laptop running windows.

If anyone could give me any thoughts, or suggestions, I would more than
appreciate it.
Also, any sites that might be helpful to know about, will also be
appreciated.
I go to get the mac, if I want it, this Saturday.

Thank you,

Terri

Re: How do I type a file path?

2016-12-05 Thread Robert Cole
OK Tim,
I figured out the problem, I added a forward slash in front of users, and that
fixed it.
/Users/Robert/Box Sync/Music/Christmas/Johnny Gill - Give Love On Christmas
Day.mp3

thanks again,

Re: Removing an email address from apple

2016-12-05 Thread Agent086b
Hi,
thanks for this. I was receiving these messages on Two email accounts. I must
have given one as a backup email address. I solved the issue by deleting my
Hotmail account that I only used for junk accounts.
I was hoping to just tell iCloud not to use the second account. Not a problem
any longer.
Thanks again.
Max.

Re: Question about my mac and the extension for the transformer

2016-12-05 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hi Simon and Hannah
Don't get me wrong.
I have been, and can still use, the extension, but due to my home set up, it is
potentially dangerous. For example, it could wrap around the chair or even
someone's leg. So a new charger would be worth it for me to eliminate that
potential.

Re: How do I type a file path?

2016-12-05 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

It depends on what app you're doing this in. In terminal, you would do the
following:

users/robert/Box\ Sync/Music/Christmas/'Johnny Gill - Give Love On Christmas
Day.mp3'

Notice that I did two different things within your filename where there was a
space or spaces. You can put a back-slash in just before the space so that
Terminal will ignore that space character, or further in the filename, I put
quotes around the title. Both single or double quotes will work.

When in AppleScript, you use colons where Terminal would use the slash, and the
quotes are not necessary.

Braille and VMWare Fusion?

2016-12-05 Thread Brandt Steenkamp
Hi there folks,

I have an old Alva 320 display, running off a cereal connection, Can you
connect a USB to cereal cable to windows in VMWare? If so, would an older
display work?

A second question. A friend of mine has a Focus 40 blue. How do you connect it
to Windows in Fusion?

Warm regards,

Hi,

Yes, just use tab to navigate around the installer, and space to
check/activate buttons. VO is not needed nor particularly responsive in this
installer.

Re: Installing flash on the mac

2016-12-05 Thread Christine Grassman
I recently encountered this annoyance.. I shut off VoiceOver, and I pressed
spacebar in the place I believed the checkbox to be when VO was off. I turned
VO back on, and it was checked. I tried this out of sheer frustration. Hope it
works for you.

Gosh, you know... I've seen this behavior before, so you're not alone. I
just don't know a sollution, lamentably. And, when I did! see it, it wasn't

It will be very interesting to see what you find out about this in the long

I am trying to install flash on my mac. However in the installation
window, I am unable to check the box for accepting the terms of service
thereby not being able to complete the installation. How does one go about
selecting the check box?
Note, I can only get to it by tabbing. When I tried swiping on the track
pad, nothing would happen. Likewise for VO left and right arrow. when I
tried to press space or return on the checkbox, nothing would happen. for
some reason, voiceover focus isn’t switching to it from what I can tell.

Thanks

Re: Installing flash on the mac

2016-12-05 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Hmm, let's see here. It's been a while since I initially installed Flash. I
know the updater is accessible, I mean, yeah, you gotta tab. VOing around
the screen won't cut it for some weird reason, but you're trying to install
from scratch... Hmm. Let me think...

How about this: Have you tried maybe tabbing to that checkbox, routing the
mouse with VO+Command+F5, then doing a VO+Shift+Space to click?

What version are you running of OSX? I'd not think that would matter,
honestly, but, just in case it does...

Chris.

I am trying to install flash on my mac. However in the installation window,
I am unable to check the box for accepting the terms of service thereby not
being able to complete the installation. How does one go about selecting the
check box?
Note, I can only get to it by tabbing. When I tried swiping on the track
pad, nothing would happen. Likewise for VO left and right arrow. when I
tried to press space or return on the checkbox, nothing would happen. for
some reason, voiceover focus isn’t switching to it from what I can tell.

Thanks

  Hi!
Try option command left arrow and option command right arrow to go to top
or bottom.
You can use the shift key in conjunction with these keys to if you want
to mark mails and remove them.
Otherwise use arrow up or down with the shift key to mark the mails you
want to remove.
  Hope this helps.

Second, what command will perform a mass deletion of messages in the

Thanks for the help.

RE: Question about my mac and the extension for the transformer

2016-12-05 Thread Simon Fogarty
HI Hannah & Chris,

Don't get me wrong,

I've got 2 ac adapters for my mac book air and one that I use at home I have
the extension connected 24 7,
The second I have at work and that doesn’t' have the extension as the lead is
long enough to go over or round the back of my desk.

 Either way should be fine,

Unless there are broken coating then no need to by a new charger.
