Re: direct TV now, live chat, and 72 hour rewind option

2016-12-09 Thread Scott Granados
Another advantage of over the air digital reception is it isn’t compressed.
Most apartments and condo groups will not put up to much of a fight if you want
to put up an antenna or dish any more. Back when the communications act was
first passed I had an home owners association go to war with me about putting
up an antenna. I was originally going to put up a small 8 element Channel
Master, nothing nuts and in a fixed position since all the towers I wanted to
hit were in the same place in San Francisco. They kept threatening me and
trying to tell me what to do which if you haven’t guessed doesn’t really work
with me and because I was a ham operator I went all PRB1 on them and put up a
100 foot tower with individual beam antennas that required an industrial
rotator. I also put lights on the top and became active in one of the local
civil preparedness groups. I had the outside of my property looking like an
NSA listening post. I also put in a 20 foot dish that I ended up building a
home brew radio telescope out of. I made sure the dish blocked out the sun if
I pointed it correctly to my neighbor’s back yard and pool because he was the
association president. I was going to put solar panels in on top of that which
in California is the only justification you can use to cut down trees and
totally rip out all the landscaping that would have blocked my sun exposure but
they caved first. Ever since that time my property managers have been more
than accommodating of the very little roof space I’ve needed which in the end
accounted for an 18 inch dish and a small panel antenna for fixed wireless.
Good times!
One thing you might look at are some of the better indoor antennas.
You don’t need to mount anything and some come with preamps built in. The good
news with digital signals you don’t need perfect reception like you do with
analog. As long as you’re getting the data stream above the noise level
sufficiently things will work just fine. No ghosting or multi path to worry
about. You might have a small device you put in a window or if you go whole
hog something you sit in your attic and you can use RF splitters to drop the
signal in to your existing dish wiring so you won’t have to pull new wire.
They make some models that strap on to your existing dish install and are
barely visible. Even the good ol rabbit ears will work in many settings. Good
luck

Custom Verbosity Settings

2016-12-09 Thread E.T.
Sierra added the "x of x" in the dock which I find useless. I set
the verbosity for the dock to low which is fine except now any badges
are no longer announced. Is there a way to set custom verbosity like
between low and medium? I suppose I could rely on alerts or banners
instead in notifications.

Scott,
This discussion is not about an iPhone, it is about an iPod. I tested an
i-phone 6 in an apple storeand after I started almost throwing up from
the dizziness, did not feel continuing to play was a smart idea.
Given the subject line, might not asking what do you want an iPod for?
before making an off point suggestion avoiding exchanges like this one?

since I also referenced buttons I believe in my first post, I do not feel
an iPhone
qualifies smiles.

Geo navigation on an iPod is more useful than you think. I’ve used one as a
backup device as I have used GPS for independent travel. My thought was though
the newer more powerful iPhones have a greater variety of voices and might have

Maybe as you said the older iPod video or similar may be the way for you to go.

Hi Kare. You can download enhanced voices for an iOS device like the

I always wanted the classic as the high capacity model was a whopping

a pants pocket!

Hi everyone,
Yes I recall posts indicating that Apple is going to discontinue the

I am not seeking a hot off the shelf model regardless, having two

First, what was the last edition that still had buttons? If I must
get a touch, how close do the voices mirror those on the mac?
Ios makes me literary dizzy so I must choose with great care, part of
why i would prefer a unit with buttons. Might not need voiceover at

I have a head phones question as well but that would be three so I
will wait.

Hi Kare. You can download enhanced voices for an iOS device like the
iPod touch but the voices for the rockbox firmware on the iPod video
for example is very slim if any as I recall.

I always wanted the classic as the high capacity model was a whopping
160gb which is still huge now for an mp3 player you can easily fit in
 a pants pocket!

Re: a couple of ipod questions?

2016-12-09 Thread Karen Lewellen

Scott,
I cannot use ios at all, the voices stimulate the dizzy centres of my
brain because of a vascular accident in a surgery.

My question about the touch was as an absolute last resort.
Since the iPod is at the request of my medical team, i prefer not making a
substitution for a device that will not do the job.

I cannot imagine why I would require geo-navagation to listen smiles.
Thanks for the ideas,
Karen

Kare, one thing you could do is use a decommissioned phone, it works just
nicely as an iPod like device and you don’t need the latest and greatest but
you can definitely take advantage of enhanced voices. You also have the
advantage of having a GPS receiver in these as GPS is part of the cell modem.
Grab an old 6+ for example and you’ll also have an upgrade path for a while
longer.

 Hello,
Further to my earlier post about erasing a folder without going via

I I am running the latest El Capitan on my late 2008 iMac.
I have a 256 GB memory stick with I have used as a time machine backup
disk with encryption. I have also used it as the target disk for a
 SuperDuper! backup of my iMac.
The experience was not entirely satisfactory as 256 GB is not enough for
more than a couple of time machine backups and a SuperDuper! backup. Also
both time machine and SuperDuper! backups were very slow, much slower than
a USB attached external hard disk drive.

So I now want to empty the 256 GB memory stick and reuse it for other
purposes. I first tried using disk utility to erase the disk but that did
not work as it said I did not have the authority to do the erase.
I then tried erasing each folder with Command+Ottion+Delete. That took a
long time and also did not work.

I note the posts about using terminal commands. I am not familiar with
that so am rather nervous about using it. I am also wondering about the
effect of my having originally used the memory stick for an encrypted time
machine backup with the password saved in the keychain. How do I mark the
 memory stick as not encrypted?

In summary I want to restore the memory stick to its original empty
unencrypted state. What do you recommend?

 Many thanks.

backing up dat from a dead iPhone

2016-12-09 Thread Vaughn Brown
Good day!

My iPhone completely died several days ago. I am getting a new one
today. Below is a link to some software to scanning and backing up
data from a dead iPhone. I wanted to see if anyone had experience with
this software, or have other ideas. And yes, I do have some, but not
all, data backed up in iTunes and iCloud.

http://www.iphone-ipad-recovery.com/recover-data-from-dead-iphone.html

Thank you for your insight.

Re: Erasing everything from a USB flash drive

2016-12-09 Thread Bill Gallik
Hi Eric,

I want to thank you for putting that DD commandline out there, I worked for
many years at AT Bell laboratories were all development work was done on UNIX
systems and I completely forgotten about the DD command. Nice to have a
refresher.

Paul,

Eric is making a very sound suggestion here, the IF=/dev/zero parameter in the
suggested command line is a UNIX standard for writing null data to the output
file (OF=).

And Paul, if you have no useful vision at all I suggest you read this message
character by character so that you will realize that the command line options
in Eric's message are actually symbols rather than spelled out words.

well, you could always use dd. The command I would use is: dd if=/dev/zero
of=/dev/ and then let it run. it might take a while to
erase, but there will not even be partition information on there afterward.
after that, you can use disk utility to repartition and format that usb device.

Oooo I shutter to think where that antenna lines up.;)

Not again that it matters rationally. I’m used to working with high power
microwave though back in the day and we were always warned to stay away from
the dishes while they were active to protect the plumbs.

You can still do that. I'd like to set up two default alert times, but it
looks like you can only set up one.

Re: Erasing everything from a USB flash drive

2016-12-09 Thread Bill Gallik
Paul,

The encryption issue can be addressed by reformatting the drive with the
appropriate selection in Disk Utility. I believe the key to resolving your
problem here is to correct the situation that prevents you from using Disk
Utility on this drive, but there’s a number of possibilities potentially
contributing to this. It’s typically quite effective to start at the least
complex culprit and work your way through progressively more complicated
circumstances.

Thus, the first question to be asked; is there a “write protect” feature on
your memory stick that is in play?

RE: Configuring calendar alerts in IOS

2016-12-09 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Donna,

There used to be this feature in the calendar of the phone in apple calendars
it would be a case of setting up multiple appointments or events with different
alert times.

Subject: Configuring calendar alerts in IOS

Hi all,

Is there a way to set up default behavior for calendar alerts? For example,
can I set it up so that I get one alert two days before, and a second alert an
hour before any time I schedule a new event?
TIA,
Donna

Erasing everything from a USB flash drive

2016-12-09 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
Further to my earlier post about erasing a folder without going via trash…..

I I am running the latest El Capitan on my late 2008 iMac.
I have a 256 GB memory stick with I have used as a time machine backup disk
with encryption. I have also used it as the target disk for a SuperDuper!
backup of my iMac.
The experience was not entirely satisfactory as 256 GB is not enough for more
than a couple of time machine backups and a SuperDuper! backup. Also both time
machine and SuperDuper! backups were very slow, much slower than a USB attached
external hard disk drive.

So I now want to empty the 256 GB memory stick and reuse it for other purposes.
I first tried using disk utility to erase the disk but that did not work as it
said I did not have the authority to do the erase.
I then tried erasing each folder with Command+Ottion+Delete. That took a long
time and also did not work.

I note the posts about using terminal commands. I am not familiar with that so
am rather nervous about using it. I am also wondering about the effect of my
having originally used the memory stick for an encrypted time machine backup
with the password saved in the keychain. How do I mark the memory stick as not
encrypted?

In summary I want to restore the memory stick to its original empty unencrypted
state. What do you recommend?

Many thanks.

Paul Hopewell
