Re: Authentication has new Window

2017-01-26 Thread E.T.
I experimented with this but same thing. Maybe it does have to do
with authenticating something but I did not find anything in Security prefs.

I use a password to log in. In case that is related.

Ok here is a question. As it applies to the Mac, what exactly does
authenticating mean? I do not think I have ever seen a phantom window
when I press VO f2 f2.

must cause the Authentication window to be activated. If in Security,

What do you mean by making the screen saver longer? Since I do not
want my Mac to sleep, if I will be away from it for a period of time, I
invoke the screen saver. Whatever changed happened between Sierra
updates I am pretty sure. Also hear this pesky message twice when I cold
boot.

Disabling cursor tracking is nice. How to apply this so tracking
remains on while reducing the repetition. Hmmm.

The second issue I have experienced and played with a bit but didn't
figure out. What I did notice is that if you turn off cursor tracking
with VO F3 then it only speaks once. I wonder if there is an option to
speak the item with focus at a different speed or pitch? I rarely go to
the desktop anymore now that folders that are in the dock work better
with VoiceOver.

Another issue that no one seems to have seen is, every time I close

I exported the VO settings in VO Utility then restored to defaults.

I know what you mean by the first, and I believe folks indicated that if you
make the screen saver features very long that it will go away.

The second issue I have experienced and played with a bit but didn't figure
out. What I did notice is that if you turn off cursor tracking with VO F3 then
it only speaks once. I wonder if there is an option to speak the item with
focus at a different speed or pitch? I rarely go to the desktop anymore now
that folders that are in the dock work better with VoiceOver.

Re: Authentication has new Window

2017-01-26 Thread Tim Kilburn
hi,

Upon further investigation, what appears to be going on here is due to the
display sleep setting. So, in System Prefs, Energy Saver, there should be
sliders for both the computer and the display sleep settings. When the display
goes to sleep, whatever process is invoked must cause the Authentication window
to be activated. If in Security, you've set that to require a password to
unlock, then the login screen is made the active process, but if that is not
set, the Authentication window is still invoked, thus VO says its piece. You
could get around this by setting the Display sleep to be a longer interval. I
would have thought that setting either the App verbosity or the Window
verbosity to "Low" would limit this announcement, but it did not. I'll
investigate a little more and see if I can figure out something for you.

Later...

Hi ET.
I'm getting the same thing on my mac book air.
If for instance I'm reading a pdf and step away for a minute the
"Authentication has new Window" comes up and blows away my position where I was
reading!
Half to do some digging!

Re: Authentication has new Window

2017-01-26 Thread E.T.

Jonathan,
Not sure which element is involved. At some point, in between
updates, when I invoked the screensaver, VO would announce "Screensaver
something". Then something changed and now announces "Authentication has
new Window".

Another issue that no one seems to have seen is, every time I close
Finder, VO announces the item in focus on the desktop not once but 3 times.

I exported the VO settings in VO Utility then restored to defaults.
No change. I sure do not want to do a third clean install.

Re: Mac and Itunes

2017-01-26 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Terry,

I doubt you have much choice as to specific versions of iTunes to use. I
believe that Apple Music came out with Yosemite, and for some folks this was a
step back in accessibility since iTunes tries to do too much. I believe that
the latest version of iTunes is a bit easier to use then the first ones that
support Apple Music.

Best wishes,

Re: Small email problem

2017-01-26 Thread Jonathan Cohn
If you need finer control over notifications, it is possible to have an
AppleScript run for each incoming message. I haven't played with this for a
while, but some possible actions could be:

1. Play a different sound for different people sending you a message.
2. Automatically extracting attachments and placing them in a specific folder
(hm could all PDF's somehow get migrated to VoiceStream on my phone?)
3. There is a kill file example that is supposed to delete all messages
associated with a thread, that Apple provided. I looked at this a few years
back and was unable to get everything in it to work, but I expect it could
still be possible.)

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: Small email problem

2017-01-26 Thread Matthew Dierckens
Hi David and Larry,
An easier way to do this is to only have notifications turned on for inbox only
or VIP emails. Go to mail preferences with command comma and make sure you're
in the general button. There's an item called mail notifications and you can
set it to inbox only, VIP, contacts, today, all mailboxes or any other folders
that you have set up.
HTH.

Re: earpods

2017-01-26 Thread David Chittenden
After being frustrated about the same thing, I realised that, when I have
multiple devices active at the same time, there is probably no way that the
AirPods can know automatically which device I want them to connect to at any
given time. For example, I currently have one iPhone on speakerphone with my
partner, whilst my other iPhone is connected to my AirPods and reading my
email. If the AirPod was doing it automatically, it should be connecting to my
phone call as that is the priority connection.

Kind regards,

RE: Mac and Itunes

2017-01-26 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Terri,

Welcome to the world of mac technology and apple products.

 As for your question,

Very easy one to answer as itunes is a built in application to the apple OSX
version
You can either have a look on the Dock using your ctrl and alt (option) keys
and the letter d to open the doc and then arrow left to find itunes or hold
down command key (1 left of the space bar plus shift and a to open the
applications folder and then press the letter I to go to the first item
starting with that letter when you find itunes command and o will start itunes
or any other highlighted application or go to the spotlight search by holding
down the command key and pressing space bar then typing in itunes

Hope this helps with a start to your mac world of learning,

Subject: Mac and Itunes

Hello everyone,

A while back, I joined this list and mentioned I was getting an older Macbook.
I don't know the model of it, or anything like that. I did get it, but I
haven't started using it. I wanted to wait until I got moved, to get started
with it.

I will admit, I have always wanted a Mac, but I don't know the first thing
about them!

The laptop runs Yosemite.

I was wondering, because this is a Mac, would Itunes work wonderfully with it?

I sure know that it doesn't with my windows Laptop, and I only use it if I
absolutely have to do so!

If ITunes does work that well, which version might be best for the Mac running
Yosemite?

Any thoughts, or help would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Terri

RE: earpods

2017-01-26 Thread Simon Fogarty
HI David,

Thanks for this I just gave it a try and yes the pods connect to my watch if
the phone is out of reach or as I tried turned off.

Only problem with that really is that if I get a phone call and wish to answer
it through my watch then the pods don’t get the audio as the phone is on.

As for connecting the earpods manually through Bluetooth on a secondary device
such as the watch or an iPad,

That’s not the way apple have said they should be working,
The pods should be connected to all devices signed in with the same iCloud
account details.
Ok so the pods are seen by each device but they aren’t actually connected until
  they are manually connected

As for removing and resetting up the pods yeah tried it and got the same
situation,

Can’t say I’m overly impressed thus far.

The charge case and the sound quality are great, the size I definitely like
but the device syncing is a bit of a failure so far.

Subject: Re: earpods

First, the Airpods connect with the Apple Watch, but they do not actually
receive sound from it unless the iPhone is out of range.

Second, once the AirPods are paired with the Apple Device, they are
automatically paired to all devices on the account. However, it is necessary to
open the device, open bluetooth, and connect to the AirPods to have the AirPods
work with that particular device at that time. If only one device, the AirPods
are always active with said device save when disconnected.

The AirPods must be in the ear in order to be active. I find that this is
sometimes a little tricky, especially on the right ear. Occasionally, I put in
the left ear, followed by the right ear, and then wait for the right pod to
realise it is in the ear and connect. Some people are reporting similar
difficulties. The fix is to factory reset the AirPods and start over. As this
does not happen to me too often, I have not performed the factory reset yet.

Apparently, the base is the primary Bluetooth controller. It creates the
initial pairing. Then, each AirPod has the ability to be primary. The first
AirPod to be placed in an ear becomes primary and handles the audio signal. If
that AirPod is removed, control is passed to the other Pod.

Kind regards,

Hi Daniel,

Interesting your saying that.

According to apple accessibility when I spoke to them today,

The earpods have been found to not be working with the apple watch as they
should so apple requested that submitted as a feedback issue via the beta
feedback tool

So they have noted a problem but it’s still to be worked on.

According to the apple data on line you shouldn’t have to tell the pods that
you want the audio to play through them it should just happen straight away.

I love my AirPods. When first received, plug them in to charge. After several
hours, open the case whilst near the iPhone and the option pops up to pair. The
AirPods fit nicely and stay in my ears. They are slightly smaller than the
EarPods. Sometimes, the activation requires placing them in the ear a few times
before they activate. The pairing information is transferred across all devices
on the account. However, the AirPods must be connected to the desired device
through the BlueTooth menu.

RE: earpods

2017-01-26 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Kawal,

To my knowledge no they are only in white currently like I believe their wired
earpods

Something I believe apple have always done with their headphones not sure why
as I'd prefer black myself and I got told no black at this point.

Only other thing I can say really is that I'm haiving mixed feelings about
them,
Siri doesn't seem to want to do volume changing she keeps telling me she can't
change the volume, yet she is meant to be able to.

The double tap to activate siri takes a few attempts to get it working and the
fact they aren't yet synching with my watch is a pain in the ass, but I also
have to manually connect them each time to my iPad also
Apple told me today that this is not the way things are meant to happen and are
taking notice of it saying it's a Bluetooth related issue on the watch and iPad.

I made the suggestion in my feedback that in the next watch they put the w1
chip and also in to the next iPad mini version so that the pods sync without
issues,

 As for the pods
I made the suggestion that they put a volume toggle on them somewhere as siri
didn't work well.

Just a couple of my own thoguhts.

I'll be ordering mine in late February. Are the Ear pods in black yet as when
I added mine to bag, it didn't give me any colour. Also, how do I pay by Apple
Pay? I have never paid by Apple pay before as the shops that I go in to do not
accept Apple Pay but they do contactless but a small amount but not Apple Pay.

I don't get the opportunity to know what to do. I don't have an Apple watch
and my card is ready to use Apple Pay. Should I put my card near to my I phone
when I'm ready to pay with Apple Pay? I know you need to press the home button
twice when the phone is locked.

RE: Fusion still accessible?

2017-01-26 Thread Simon Fogarty
I second and third that,
I also use virtual box on a daily basis and it is getting better for
accessibility when setting up a VM in it on your mac,

I’ve just had to do this for a windows 10 and windows 7 machines on an el
capitan OS installation
I’m yet to try setting up a vm on a Sierra machine.
